Hello,
According to ASUS support, this is how you should solve the SmartDimmer annoyance you all well know about.
DO NOT TRY! This would of course only remove your data, not solve the problem at all. This just shows how well ASUS support performs
Thank you for your trust in our technical support.
Taking into consideration the history of your file, I kindly ask you to try to do the ‘wipe data’ procedure.
In order to do that, please check the following steps, so that the procedure goes as it follows:
1. Press and hold down “power button” until the system shuts down.
2. Remove the SD card from Eee Pad.
3. Press and hold down “Volume down” button first, and then press and hold down the “Power” until a screen appears;
4. Do not press any button until the second screen appears; Here, you have to press the ‘Volume Down’ key in order to select the option ‘Wipe Data’;
5. A line indicating that you have to press the ‘Volume UP’ key to run the application or the ‘Volume Down’ key to cancel;
6. Press the ‘Volume UP’ key to run the ‘Wipe Data’ procedure;
After the “Wipe Data” process is done, it will reboot automatically and then your Eee Pad should be able to enter the system successfully.
In case the concern is still present, , I kindly ask you to tell me the build number of your tablette, looking into 'Settings - About Tablet - Build
Number' in order to better assist you.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Has anyone had more luck trying to get a solution from ASUS, or hear from them whether this would be solved in JB?
It's perfectly normal for their lowly-trained monkeys to respond in that fashion, the well-trained monkeys became CEOs and don't respond to e-mails. For disabling smartdimmer, see jtrosky's and Metallice's solution - this thread, point 5.
Thanks for the link, I know it but I'd rather not tempt that since there is no satisfactory way to disable the tracking implanted by ASUS... rooting isn't an option right now.
I've tried again to get through to them, but they are so thick they wouldn't understand.
Last episode, they tell me I should contact the software manufacturer because the SmartDimmer isn't an ASUS feature:
Thank you for your trust in our technical support. Concerning your last mail which indicates that you still have issue with the Smart Dimmer application , I inform you that Smart Dimmer is not an Asus software.
I kindly suggest you to contact the software manufacturer because we are offering our support only for the pre-installed applications.

Maybe if we all reported this problem, they would finally cave in, what do you think?

That's actually pretty funny, she's not realizing that SmartDimmer is the term by Asus for their contrast adjustment feature, and instead thinking that you're referring to an app you downloaded off the internet or something. She's probably new or a low tier responder.
My guess is 80% of their "tech support" has never even held an infinity let alone knows anything on how to operate or fix them
This is why websites like xda exist!
Asking you to wipe your data is a cost cutting measure at your expense. For most issues it will fix the problem, however for most of those problems, there are methods to fix them that do not require wiping and are therefore less inconvienient to the user, however it takes valuable resources to diagnose the problem and offer those kinds of solutions so they ask you to wipe and hope it works.
So If you have a real issue you're best seeking help from here first.
The only solution atm requires rooting, but I have heard that the tf300 jellybean update has an option to disable smartdimmer. Dont worry to much about the tracking. If they deny you service because
you can disable device tracker using the instructions here, but that prevents updates: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833212
I wouldn't worry about them knowing you rooted because of the tracker. If they denied you service because of it, im pretty sure they could be providing evidence that they were invading your privacy by perusing your devicetracker data. Best to read through the privacy and service agreements if it concerns you. I'm no lawyer.
Seriously... Asus is not spying on you and they could care less if you are rooted.
Thanks all for your helpful replies! Indeed, let's see what the JB update offers, since it's due soon next week (hopefully), and then maybe some rooting is in order

Yes, I had quite a laugh at that
I suppose they have their front lines for dummy questions as most other support teams, but here I really have a hard time getting through (even giving them the location of the root config file /sys/devices/nvhost/tegradc.0/smartdimmer/enable)... It must have been 11 or 12 attempts now, with various colourful and unhelpful replies as above, another one asking me to send screenshots, or to check the automatic brightness.
One was a bit brighter with a "With reference to your e-mail indicating a query related to the brightness settings of your display, be kindly informed that the dynamic contrast that you experience on your Asus TF700T is normal, as it depends on what is displayed on the screen.". But then she was just repeating the problem without offering any solution or answer.

Agreed, I wouldn't expect them to waste their time spying on people, no. But it makes sense that they detect rooting since it could easily lead to the failure of their tracking feature on a device.
I understand this is an interesting feature to offer, the possibility to find back your device, or at least to block it or wipe out its data. But I only heard that feature existed by chance, it is not mentioned in their manual. Somehow one would expect this to be told to the user, and that the choice would be offered the first time the device is configured, for example. Anyway, there's already a long thread on that topic so...
To be honest, by searching I could only find one report of someone who had their guarantee voided after rooting the device, you probably saw that too (in these very forums). Also, it was anonymous, so this is a bit doubtful indeed. Still, it bothers me.
Not sure where I read it, but a user reported that after JB update this Smart Dimmer was either fixed or removed.
It wasn't anonymous, it's just that the senior member who's reported it has a nickname "unknown_owner", which might be confusing. The rest is in fact in the other thread, so I won't repeat the info, but you can disable CMClient and preserve OTA functionality pretty easily - just disconnect (or not) and restore CMClient from where you removed it originally, as you need /system/ to be stock in general to update. Then update, restore root and disable (remove/backup) CMClient again, pretty simple. This is of course for those who are concerned with the Device Tracker, not for those who don't care about it. Anyway, it does not have to be "either privacy or OTA updates".
I have a TF300 and I can confirm that with jelly bean firmware it has an option to disable this smartdimmer feature in asus customized settings, i feel like the way asus disable it is not the same as we disable it, when i use the command to disable, the screen got a little brighter, but when i use asus setting to disable, the screen did not get brighter. yeah of course they have their own way to disable it, just saying.
and i believe this stupid feature is for all tegra 3 devices, not just our tablets,
Yes - But done properly, it WOULD WORK!

You say that it seems to effect the screen differently, but the big question is: Does it WORK? (The Asus menu choice in JB) If it kills the flickering, I don't care if they do it with voodoo, as long as it works.
Samsung has a similar feature, present on my GS II Skyrocket: Apart from the brightness settings for display, there is "Auto Adjust Screen Power" -not to be confused with auto brightness" with the description: "Save power by analyzing the image and adjusting LCD Brightness". The KEY difference? It works well, and I have had it enabled on every ROM, including stock since I got the phone 10 months ago. Sounds to me like it either works poorly on Tegra 3, or the thresholds that Asus chose (or Nvidia) are not optimal. Because it DOES cause annoying flicker. Why else would a) developers spend so much effort figuring how to disable it and b) people find those threads through searching and learn what to do and c) the poster above sand multiple emails to Asus support looking for an official solution.
Asus is TRYING, but not succeeding in learning and listening to their customers. Plenty of effort, not much in the way of results. As several folks noted: Thankfully we have XDA, without which, well I don't like to think about a world without xda! :cyclops:

Hi Everyone,
I have searched Google and must say I can't find any solution for changing SMS WakeUp / Notification pop-up.
It is so annoying when the screen lights up.
I would also like to be able to disable that it shows the message in the top statusbar.
I have unlocked my phone by finding the "ChevronWP7" unlocker tool and send (by e-mail) the "ChevronCert" to my WP7 HTC Trophy and installed the certificate. Downloaded "Tom XAP Installer v1.2.zip" and installed "RegistryEditor 1.1.0.0.xap" where I have tried several registry fixes found on different websites: "modify-sms-notifications-in-windows-phone-7" but nothing worked also found a solution here and the same again nothing i working:
[HK_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL]
"DisableSMSWakeUpEvent"=dword:1
Could someone help out I would really appreciate....
Thanks.
Bump please
Bump...Lookin for the same thing
Sorry guys, but why would you want this? I hate it on my Android. I have to push the power button every single time, which in turn, kills my hardware buttons.
At least you guys go to your lockscreen with a notification at the top, I had to download an app to wake the screen and it bypasses the lockscreen and I text/call people every single day lol. I wish it would just GO TO THE LOCKSCREEN!!!
Privacy, of course!
Bump.
@Dj21o: With respoect, I can think of at least one good reason why this setting should be "settable" and that is privacy. I may be in an environment where I don't want just anyone to be able to see an SMS as it arrives just by looking at my screen.
The fact that you would prefer it this way is, of course, good, too, but I think ther choice should be in the hands of the user.
Don't youy agree?

Yeah, it should be available for those that want it, and for those who don't... It is a simple setting that make it a big deal for users, and I can totally see where you are coming from. Sometimes my phone unlocks, and that is swiping left to right. I imagine it happens much more swiping up lol.
There is a site where you can put down ideas for developers to look at, and people vote for them. I can post the link of the site if you want.
Here is the site, you can post your ideas accordingly to what type of idea it is.

I just want to know exactly why you want this? Yes it can be abit bright at the first glimpse but isn't there a bigger risk for falling asleep if you just press a button, instead of actually opening your eyes?
Nothing against what you like/dislike, I'm just asking, why.

I have the same problem
Any news about this???
So, disable Toast notifications in WhatsApp? That's a (required) per-app setting, no need to request an OS feature for it!
Why you don't flip you phone down? If proximity sensor detect something close to phone display it will don't turn display on when toast notification pop-up.
Dear all,
I have HTC One V, it is one of the most problematic hand phone ever designed. I have many many problem with it such as below:
- Very low speed of opening the phone book and SMS page (Some times it take more than 10 to 20 minutes)
- Late reaction of key board during dialing or writing messages.
- Unlock ring in not working properly
- Hands free key during phone talk is not working
- Scroll function is not working
I am still trying to use the phone but the scrolling problem is really impossible to use. When I open a list or a menu or any screen which needs to scroll, the page is not functioning properly at all, it stops, no reaction, suddenly moves very fast and selects one item randomly and opens it or execute it. I can not use my phone and you know the scroll function is the main function in touch screen hand phones.
I have done below actions to solve the issue:
- I restarted the phone. (Does not solve the problem)
- I backed up the contact list and SMS into my Micro SD, then remove the memory card, Reset the phone to factory setting (Does not solve the problem)
- I have uninstalled all additional games and apps. Now it has only the original apps built in from HTC and Viber and WhatsApp only.
- Every few minutes I open the "Task Manager" and stop all additional apps to free the Ram but it is not helping.
- I made hard reset by turning of the phone, push the power and volume down key together and . . . ( Does not solve the problem)
- I remove the screen protector (Does not effect on the function)
The reaction of the phone during scroll function is most like it is hanging or very low speed, it seems like a software glitch. I hope I can upgrade or refresh the android to solve the issue. I dont know to check the hardware of touch screen. There is a probably issue with touch screen hardware.
If any of you have the same problem please help me and tell me what to do.
regards,
Farhad
Hi, If you have made no changes to your device (rooting, etc.) and it is under warranty, perhaps contact HTC for a replacement.
Remember that rooting your device voids the warranty.
All the best.

Yes, my guess is hardware problem.
Because that is most likely the case, rooting your phone will likely cause more problems, perhaps making the phone completely useless . With an expired warranty, you could send the phone to HTC for repair, however my suggestion would be get a new phone of your choice.
Here is some info on rooting.
Again, this is just for your information, please do not try to root a defective device.
I wish you all the best - and with that I am closing this thread.

Hello everyone,
It has been a while since I ventured through this forum, but it seems that y'all may be my only hope.
I've been suffering through this glitch/stutter that, when scrolling, the phone registers my finger as taps everywhere my finger slides. All I simply need to do it remove my finger from the phone and I can continue scrolling like normal. It is super annoying and I cannot find out what causes it, it just seems random. It never happened on any of my Nexus phones in the past.
Now, here's a list of things I've tried in order to fix it:
- Safe mode
- Factory Reset (Restore from Google account)
- Factory Reset (New Device option)
- RMA'd through Google support and received a new pixel and the problem persists (even after going through the steps above on the new device)
Here is a short video of the glitch while it is happening.
https://goo.gl/photos/GysQXd82MexVkk836
(Hopefully that link works)
Note: the glitch will not stop until I take my finger off the phone, you can tell when it is happening when I scroll over the share button and it registers as a tap.
If you guys have any suggestions, I'm ready to try anything at this point. I don't want to go through Google support because I know they'll send me yet another Pixel (I've already talked to them again and that was their solution, I told them I'll try a few more things) and I feel like that is a waste. I'm almost 100% positive that this is a software glitch, not hardware.
Thanks!
Was that the Reddit app or a browser window? I'll try to reproduce if you can tell me exactly what you were running. I do not have that behavior in the XDA app as I try it right now.

Hey thanks for the response. I've gotten the glitch to happen all over. The Reddit app as you saw in the video, the chrome app, even scrolling through the list of apps in the stock pixel launcher. So I'm really not sure how to have you replicate the problem.
I'm thinking it is because certain settings in the settings app since Safe Mode disabled all third party apps when I tried that. I have night light enabled to turn on at dusk, I have ambient display off, auto brightness off, etc. Nothing too out of the ordinary.
I thought it may have been because I have location settings on high accuracy and when the phone pings for location maybe it bogs down the rest of my phone at that certain time but there's no way I can try and replicate that. It's a long shot anyway.

I just tried reproducing this by going to the app drawer and scrolling up and down while being sure my finger passed over both the home and app switcher buttons a good 50 or so times. The ONLY time the nav bar buttons were triggered were if my finger completely left the screen and went into the bezel - clearly that's not your problem. So I don't think I can reproduce the glitch.
If you think this is caused by your specific set of settings configured, you can always rule that out quickly with a factory reset. Just do a factory reset, set things up quickly, go ahead and login with your Gmail account so you can download some apps but do NOT change any non-basic settings. For example, go ahead and setup WiFi but do NOT change any display, input, or accessibility settings (especially the last thing there - the accessibility settings are often glitchy themselves). One setup, install a bunch more Google apps then try to reproduce the behavior again in the app drawer. If the behavior continues, then you may have a bad touchscreen sensor!
One last thing: Any chance you have really dry fingertips? Dry skin could always be your problem here!

I guess I'll try a factory reset and not mess with the settings although that kind of defeats the purpose of using this phone the way I want lol.
I'm not sure if this is caused by a bad touchscreen sensor because I've had the problem on two separate Pixel phones so far. Or maybe I just got super unlucky with two faulty phones.
I don't think my fingers are too dry. If all else fails, I'll try moisturizing them I guess. I've never had this problem on all my other phones though, but I guess you never know.
Thanks for the help.

I recently had a similar situation (different bad behavior) when helping my mother-in-law with a vision disability. Atrociously unacceptable performance, multiple phones. Turned out the triple-tap-to-zoom feature in the accessibility options was the culprit and disabling that one checkbox made all the difference.
I'm not necessarily suggesting you must use defaults forever, but if this is a setting of yours, let's first prove that it's a setting before going through the long process of finding out WHICH setting it is. Does that make sense? If we reset settings to defaults and it continues, no need to spend all that time - you've got a broker phone. If that does fix it, no need to return the phone, it's a buggy setting - let's find it to see if you can live without it one way or another. It may be a major deal breaker out it may be something you really don't care much about.
I think I get that issue now and again, usually whilst scrolling in chrome. I decided it was due to holding a finger on the screen just long enough (before starting to scroll) to register the press as a "select text" event.

Yeah that could be what causes it. Maybe it is just the way we are scrolling and how Google has calibrated the screen touch sensors.
Possible Fix
So I went into accessibility settings and changed the duration you need to hold your finger down to do a long press to medium (from the default as short). It seems that may have fixed it. I haven't experienced the glitch since I've done that change.
Here's to hoping that did indeed fix the issue.
Thanks everyone.
Hi,
As we now probably all know, the Global version of this ROM lacks a lot of features : no gestures, no dark mode...
But even without those missing parts, it is still irritating...
Here are the three things that are bothering me :
- 1°) the notifications : I have 2 SIM cards inside that thing. It constantly reports that I have a new voice message. But whatever SIM card answering machine I call, tells me "You have no new message". I erase the notification. I keeps popping up again...
- 2°) the dialer : when I get a call, I have to swipe up to answer it. On every other phone, a short swipe is enough to answer the call. On this device, I have to swipe up to the top of the device for it to understand that I would like to answer the call...
- 3°) whatever I do, the default app selected for SMS messaging is not kept after a reboot. I use Textra. I select it as the default app. Each time the phone is rebooted, I have to tellit that I want to use Textra again as default mesaging app.
Do you guys have those problems also ?
Regards.
It's not a real problem or bug, but really irritating
I have some more:
I know it's nitpicking buuuuut
1. When watching YouTube vids and touching the triggers by accident, it brings up the scroll bar and does not go away untill you let go of the triggers.
2. Can't silence notifications.
3. Unreliable OTG USB file transfers (gets stuck)
4. When increasing the volume on Bluetooth devices, it only goes up by 0 or 2
5. My alarm clock never works
6. Switching between Sim Cards is super slow
7. Searching for settings is difficult
And some more things that I can't think of the top of my head.

Hi,
Hum... That can be sorted I think
1°) About your thing with the button triggers : install Button Mapper. Open it. Choose to add a new button and tap the left or right trigger button. Once created, say you don't want any action to be configured. You should be good to go
2°) You can silence notifications. But you have to do that under "Notifications" and not under "Sound"... Go figure !!!
3°) Hum... Have you tried to format your card to another format like FAT ? I don't use that feautre so I can't really tell.
4°) Yes. I think that is true. But will try to confirm later when I'll use it in my car audio.
5°) Mine works... I think.
6°) It is not unusually slow here...
7°) The way they organized the settings is just... super stupid.
Conclusion : I think I will try to install the chinese ROM and root it to see if I can use that with better results.
Hi,
Another thing is totally stupid to me : that is the fact that you cannot pin an app to stick even if Recents are cleared.
So I can have gestures enabled because the stupid people at Nubia removed that from the EU/US ROM.
But that requires access to "Accessibility" services.
As soon as I clear recents, that feature is disabled...
And as it is gestures => no more control over device !!!
SHEER STUPIDITY !!!!
All in all, I think I will return the device within the next 3 days within my right of withdrawal.
Hardware is brilliant. Softwa
I will be returning mine also. Such a shame the software sucks.

how did you return it?
I have no return option in order details
also how did they accept it if you used the phone? they say in their policy that the phone must be unused

Did you fill in the form they emailed you? Is the case number the order number?

As long as you return it in the first 15 days you can return it used or not, and I emailed their customer support to return it

The form is not accepting my IMEI number. Did you have this problem?

I am returning mine as well due to these software issues, and I received the same response about DHL. They did not say they would not take it even though I had used it, they agreed that I could return it because I was within my 15 days. I would assume as long as you didn't damage it (screen cracks, water damage, etc), they should still be able to process the refund.
For me, GLS is the courier. Never heard of them.
I hope if they get so much people returning the device because of it's lousy software, they may consider improving it...
Let's wait and hope...
Anyone had their refund yet?

Hi,
As we now probably all know, the Global version of this ROM lacks a lot of features : no gestures, no dark mode...

I notice these weird things too but doesn't bother me too much. Coming off several other Chinese devices lately these are not so bad and hopefully get dealt with by a software update or by someone here.
Have they ever fixed the touch trigger issue with YouTube?

From version 2.07 to version 2.10 on YouTube, triggers did not fix!
My phone kept "falling asleep" for what seemed to be at random times when using the phone. I finally determined it was because of the one-handed mode. When I drag from the side, to the middle, which is supposed to activate the mode, it turns off the phone display off as if I pressed the button to do that, or double tapped it (which I have activated) - is anyone else experiencing this??
The other issue I have is that I recall having the open to pull the notification area down, and along with the brightness, it showed the volume too. I know that you are "supposed to" go to where the pen icon is to edit....but when I press on the three dots, the only option is brightness, so it's not even as if I have the option to enable that, even if I wanted to!
Thoughts? Is there a developer option I need to enable?
PS: I beg that you don't ask me for phone specifics if you're not sure that it would resolve the issue. I have no issue sharing that information with anyone. But if you don't know if Oreo, for example, is the cause...I'd rather not try to locate information that may never be used to troubleshooting, which would waste both of our times.
1: it should not turn off. Are you on an aftermarket display?
2: probably software issue. Did you flash update or OTA install?

Hi, thank you for the reply.
No I am not on an aftermarket display. I purchased this through Verizon.
Along those lines, all updates have been through the automated process built into the phone.
I agree that it appears to be software, or at least software that may have been installed. Is there a way to search by install date on my device? I may have to reverse engineer what application was installed when this happened (maybe about two months ago, probably less) - my only concern is I may uninstall that software but whatever change was made remains. Wondering if there is a "rollback" feature on the phone where I can just put it back to a certain point in time.

I would say the easiest is just to use lg UP to flash a slightly earlier version. I can't tell too much and I don't think an app being installed/uninstalled would matter.
