... Long time (6+ years) BlackBerry user, I've had a G1, but never took it serious and actually used it as a primary phone, it was a fun wifi only device. Well I made the plunge and got sick of waiting for someone serious from BB and I sprung for the Vibrant (Android 2.1) leaving my BB without service.
One of the many annoyances I've come across with Android is recent searches.
Whether it's in the Market or Google Maps you tap search and your recent entries appear, is there anyway to retweak any of the recent ones? I tried to long press and got nothing, no dragging it anywhere, I find it strange this would be left out. I don't see any entries for that functionality on Google's Code page for Android either, http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/list .
On the BB in Google Maps I just use the trackball scroll down to it, and scroll right and it's in the edit box for me to change. Or I can press the menu (essentially equivalent to the android long press) and get the standard options to do things like copy the text to the clipboard and stuff... All reasonable tasks.
Is this possible in Android? It's extremely annoying having to go back and retype the whole search just because you wanted to change a tiny part of it.
+1
.............
... I'll just assume this is one of the many things "Droid Doesn't" :|.
I love the Vibrant, but I miss my BB :'(. I wish I could afford to just have both.
Settings >search >google search settings. There should be an option here stop web suggestions. Dunno about google maps though

Apparently in Sense 4.0, whether by accident or by design (I seriously hope it's the former...), HTC broke associating links with apps. I thought this issue was big enough to warrant its own thread.
The main use for this was clicking YouTube links to open in the YouTube app.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qf_hdFSnOEI
Instead, ALL HTML links open in the browser. I am willing to bet Play Store app linksdo the same.
Anyone else really frustrated with this? Is there a way to fix this short of installing a custom ROM
Edit: I want to reiterate that clearing browser defaults doesn't help

Play store links do open in the browser. I've only been back on Android for a couple days after a 5 month iPhone stint so I didn't think anything of it at the time, but now that you bring this up I am retroactively annoyed.
Thought it was just me. Switching launchers doesn't help either. At the very least we should get to choose how links are handled.
I am annoyed by this as well. Hopefully an update will fix this and at least give us the old option list back. At least the youtube page works most of the time.
I need to stop coming to general section...I am seeing more and more bugs...which I never cared but after reading them suddenly I feel a burn in my pocket lol
What gets me mad is youtube links not opening the app. Not only sense 4, but my last phone (Vivid 4.0 Sense 3.6) had the same issue

Wasn't there a legal battle against apple where apple sued HTC for opening appropriate based on the nature of text for example opening the dialer when one clicks in the phone number on a website?
Apple won this case right?
Does this have to do something with this?

Don't think so because clicking a phone number on a web page just brought up the dialer for me
Have you tried "clear defaults" for the stock browser inside the app settings menu? I know I started getting prompted for links through Friendstream and was able to default to Chrome once I did this.

I tried clearing defaults for both Chrome and the stock browser (Internet). It still just defaults to whichever I had last had set as default.
what if you 'press + hold' the link does it give you a coice on what to open it with?
I'm at my wit's end with this. It's only been on my One X, and only on Sense ROMs.
Every single time I open up Google Maps and tap the search bar, it waits, then kicks me out of the search bar, then I tap it again, it waits, starts loading my 'recent' list, then kicks me back out. After the second time, it puts my most recent search or destination into the map and then it "finds" me. Only after this can I finally search for a location.
I use this thing for navigation daily. I'm sick to death of playing this stupid game with my phone. When I open Maps, I want to enter a [email protected]#%$% destination, then go there. I don't want it to tell me "No dude, I know better than you... Hold on for a few minutes while I pull this old location out of my ass. Wait... wait for it... wait... nope... little more... there we go! The place you have no interest in finding is now ready for you, sir."
When I've flashed AOSP-based ROMs, this has never been an issue... although the GPS (as well as cameras) seems to be fundamentally flawed in all the builds so far, or I'd be using them right now.
Any idea what I can do to stop this irritating nonsense or did the managers of Good Burger help write the Google Maps app?
Just like to confirm that I see this behavior as well. I don't use GMaps quite that often so I never really connected the dots but this is EXACTLY what I deal with.
That pisses me off too

Annoying
I have the same issue and it bothers me a lot. I wonder if it's changed any bit with the latest upgrade.
Yeah this gives me the ****s big time. Worse I think is how when you select a location from the calendar it tries to navigate with the ****ty locations app instead of Google nav
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
I've never had this issue and use GMaps pretty often. Maybe it has to do with an HTC or ATT app because I've used it on cleanrom and nocturnal roms.
I had this happen on my galaxy nexus as well... The only time it really does it is if I had something already searched for on maps, go away from maps for several hours (also loading other apps), then I go to to maps to look for something else... Maps is "fresh" and ready to go, I try to type a search, then it kicks me off the search bar and goes back to that other search result from several hours ago. Drives me nuts. I think it's the maps app because it always wants to find your location before you can do anything... And that's often after you have already tried to search for something

Never faced this issue after years of using gmaps and sense
But seriously, if you're going to make a post then turn it into a question on how to fix it instead of just complaining
Little more productive don't you think

I just tested this and do not see a problem. I am running CleanROM 4.5 with the AT&T 2.20 build.prop and AT&T 2.20 radio. When I launch gmaps it finds my locaiton, then I hit the magnifier glass in the soft menu bar at the bottom, type my search term, and off it goes.

GPS has worked fine in cm9 for some time (re: aosp comment).
However, I have this happen too on cm9. Very frustrating.

I definitely know what you're talking about. it drives me crazy that I just want to input an address and it seems like maps is telling me that it knows better than me what I want. anyway, i've found if i just give maps 5-10 seconds to load and don't touch anything, it wont go through its whole temper tantrum.

^^ This - I've learned to let Maps load for about 4-6 seconds first, and the start searching. Otherwise it will start acting crazy.
Ok so I did a lot of searching and have not been able to find anything for this... I found a couple of threads started by people asking if it is possible or if there is one that exists but those did not receive any real responses so I'm hoping that one of the amazing devs here can help please. I'm debating making a thread in the general Android Development forum so that maybe I'll reach a wider audience.
So what I'd like is a homescreen widget, or possibly a Live wallpaper, which shows the live cards from Google Now.
There are countless Google Now themed UCCW skins that people have put out. I don't want that.
I also found a way to create homescreen icons that LOOK like Google Now cards. But all those do is launch apps, they do not update with live information from Google Now.
I'm not sure why Google Now wasn't created with a widget. It just seems to make sense. It's kind of annoying that you have to open the app to get all this information, instead of having it right in front of your face on your homescreen where you can access other apps quickly as well. I mean the point of google now is to present you with information before you need it right? How is that possible if I can't get the info without opening the app.
So I'm hoping there is, if anything, some sort of work around here.
Maybe someone knows of a way to create a widget with desktop visualizer that will show the live Google now cards and update them.
I'm hoping for a scrollable widget that will be almost exactly like Google Now (i.e new cards will pop up as they do in the app, you can scroll up and down to view all of the cards you currently have, you can swipe to remove cards - (come to think of it you probably won't be able to swipe to remove cards, but maybe a double tap or something?))
It would probably be best if this widget did not include the google search bar and simply showed the google now cards.
I remember hearing about an app in the past that could overlay live wallpapers on each other. Is there a way to overlay an app into a live wall paper? so that you could see Google Now as your live wall paper, even if maybe you can't actually interact with it this way?
For now I'm going to try setting up something with tasker, so that google now will automatically open every morning when I turn off my alarm, and possibly at other points (maybe when a new card pops up or something). Something similar to this could probably be done with the smart actions app if people are interested in trying that out. But honestly I feel like this is not the best solution because I'd rather not have tasker running constantly, eating my RAM and therefore my battery.
So I don't know if the reason there is no widget already is because it simply is not possible. And if it's not possible could someone please explain why?
Also, so that I can try to work on this myself - can someone please help me by telling me which files Google now uses for getting and updating cards? (i.e. the file names I would see in Titanium or under Settings>Apps or in a file explorer where they would be located - I'm guessing somewhere in the /system/ folder) If I can access these I can play around with them and try some things out
TIA to all who reply...
Given that Google Now is a bit of a battery drain already, I'd imagine that having it constantly running and updating cards would use even more. The cards ARE available in the pulldown menu, aren't they? I haven't used it in a while... Still on ICS until Moto+Rogers updates the OS sometime in Q1 '13 now. >.<

I got a Razr Maxx HD because I don't want to worry about battery drain. It's been something holding me back with every other phone I ever owned. I hear that the regular Razr HD gets pretty amazing battery life as well. I'm not looking for reasons why I wouldn't want this. I'm looking for reasons why it would not be possible or a way to make it possible.
Sorry to hear about Rogers...
But if you are rooted you should be able to install Google Now for ICS
This might work http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1983337

I also discovered that pressing the home button and swiping up brings up Google Now. That is good enough for me, and I can live without the widget.

This. It works from any app and it only takes a second to load.
Does anyone know of an app that can control our skyrocket lit keys at the bottom? I would assume root is needed to do such a thing. I can't seem to find much on Google Search.
Basically, I'm looking for an app that can setup/remap things like the following:
Menu Press,
Menu Long-Press
Home Press,
Home Long-Press,
Back Press,
Back Long-Press,
Search Press,
Search Long-Press
Some examples of actions with such key presses could be like: screen off, kill app, launch app, recents, etc.
I know a lot of custom roms like CM, SLIM, AOKP, and Beanstalk already include these features however I'm running stock lately and I'm hoping there are solutions like this for people who don't always want to run custom roms. Please don't reply if all your going to say is "use custom roms"... I know how and chose not to for now.
I appreciate any apps anyone can suggest as everything I have found doesn't seem to have these features. There has to be something out there somewhere...
Thanks!
I don't believe u really searched... there are remapping Apps that may do what u want but require root. Do some searching with those keywords.
To be honest however, "custom roms" as u put it are your best bet. If u don't like them, you may have to live without this particular feature

Your reply would be excellent if this forum was a fashion forum or kitchen and furniture fans website, it's xda-developers here.... I'm sure OP would like a"mod" that works natively in his device, and "guess" he doesn't want an app filled with "Check out our other apps" or "Hair removal ? No problem" or ads filling the status bar beside waisting the already limited system RAM...

Huh?... clearly he doesn't want natively as then he would be using built in features of aosp based roms, instead he's using stock and looking for 3rd party solutions, aka not native.
Never had a problem with limited ram on mu device, you must be running A TON of background apps.
As for ads, a combination of adblocker and android firewall has proven quite effective for me, both by blocking Alps from internet access that shouldn't have them anyway, and by limiting of eliminating ads for the ones that do.
If ur post was meant as an insult, rolls off shoulders bro, this is there internet. If not, then I'm just confused by what u posted...

Look, I'm only asking in hopes that someone would already have used one successfully on the skyrocket and would be willing to tell about it. Yes I'm sure there are remapping apps out there but mostly for hardware keys, not the lit keys on the skyrocket. I searched, not for 5 hours, but I searched yes.
Thanks anyways, I CAN live without it sure, but XDA is a place to grow and learn and as far as I can tell, it doesn't hurt to ask and learn from others' experience.... or does it??

The lit keys ARE hardware keys lol, thats why i suggested looking into remap apps. And yes it has been done.
Most of the time you'll find that level of customization in a custom ROM...
