Generally, wipe data/cache, install TW ROM of choice.

Should've done a nandroid once you rooted

Fixed :cyclops:

ive read that its best to go back to a stock ROM or back to stock before flashing from AOSP rom.
If you dont some system files will be left behind in different partitions that might give you issues.
id wipe 3x. restore a stock nandroid, then wipe again, then flash tw rom

Learned that extra wipes can only help not hurt. Haha good ole htc taught me that. Thunderbolt and rezound haha and I only do the system wipe when switching aosp to tw. Not tw to tw. That's a waste of time haha

i bounce back and forth all the time btween touchwiz/aosp... all i do is wipe data/factory reset 1 time then flash rom or nandroid restore.

How to install or flash a theme

How do I install or flash a theme to my Evo??

Depending on what ROM you're using you usually just download the theme, put it on the root of your SD card, wipe cache and dalvik-cache, then flash the theme.

So you just flash a theme through recovery? How do you revert if you don't like it or it doesn't look right? Create a backup before you flash the theme and then restore if you need to? TIA!

its not life & death, but after reading your questions,i highly recommend reading a bit more about themes, recovery and how they work before flashing anything. It will be to your benefit; unless you dont care really how your phone looks or operates, since these are dev tools that give us these capabilities and you can muck many things up if you are unaware of what you are doing...
Great lessons in this thread.... Thanks!
Every time I try to flash a theme (I've tried two different ones with many separate download attempts), I get an abort message from clockwork recovery.
I'm Evo 4g with CM6.1.1
Flash theme that does not match software on phone.
Thanks for the information. I have been looking for some themes as I have only done new ROM's. What will happen if I am on CY6.1.2 and flash theme for a 6.0 or less? For example I like Detox, but I don't think I can use it since it is for less than 6.1. Is that correct?
Thanks for this information! I was wondering what I needed to do to change my theme:good:
I cannot install a ROM for the life of me someone please help

Updating ROMs

I've looked around for a little while and can't find any thread that says how to go from one build of a custom ROM to another... I feel extremely noobish asking this as well. I'm on build 11 of bean's custom JB ROM and there have been three new builds and I'm wondering if I need to do a full wipe as if I were flashing a ROM from stock, or if I just go ahead and do a dirty flash... Thanks in advance for the help

It's really at your own discretion. You can dirty flash, but you might have issues, but clean flashes are always the best path to take. Although, sometimes the devs do recommend a clean flash on some releases when they change something major.

Personally I always dirty flash. A couple of times I've encountered problems, made a backup then wiped to troubleshoot the problem, but its never fixed anything so I just revert to my backup. YMMV
Just read and follow the install instructions for the specific rom.

The OP usually tells you what you need to do. If there are major changes, they will tell you to wipe. Sometimes, dirty flashing is okay, just make sure that you follow the directions from the dev that created the ROM.

Format and flash.
As a general rule, I do an App backup (I tend to like My Backup Pro for app backups), a full nandroid backup, then dirty flash (wiping dalvik/cache) and see how it goes. Best case, everything works and I save myself a ton of time not having to restore apps/reapply settings. Worst case, if I have problems that don't seem to be generally reported, I do a full wipe and clean install.

(Q) Brick bug?

I'm rooting a friends at&t skyrocket tomorrow that is on official ics update from at&t and was wondering if that brick bug was still present.I know i might be a little late with this. I was told by a friend that it was only present on the ics leaks for this phone and just wanted to make sure now that this has official ics that i won't have any problems worrying about a brick on my hands by wiping data factory reset in cwm. Go easy on me please I was on the OG evo when all of this brick stuff happened so I never payed much attention to it

Regardless, wiping data/factory reset using cwm won't effect anything. I'm pretty sure that problem was the result of wiping in the phones settings menu (if I remember right).

Honestly, i'm not sure. I never really worried about it. Always use CWM for wiping and never had a problem with anything.
I think it happens when you try to format the internal SD card. Its an emmc bug (I think) but I don't have the bug and my i777 doesn't have it. I thought it was on the specific kernel for the i777 and the international variants.

Just follow the sticky here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398
Once you get it rooted with CWM, i'd suggest updating CWM to this version - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1777970
If you're looking for the JellyBean version of AOKP, i'd really suggest this - http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34092-aokp-unofficial-galaxy-s-ii-skyrocket-i727-nov-04-milestone-1/
As far as flashing it, I:
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache
-mounts & storage [format /system]
-advanced [wipe dalvick cache]
-flash rom
-flash gapps
-reboot
*you can do these x2 or x3 each if you wish just to be sure everything is clear*
Hopefully some of this will help if you already don't know any of it. Any other questions, shoot me a pm if you need or i'm sure someone here can help.

Reboot Issue

Okay so I bought a Blaze a few days ago and I was messing around with it and I rooted it. When I rooted it I flashed a ROM and when the ROM booted up and got to the welcome screen it instantly turned rebooted itself, so I let it boot up again but it constantly reboots. Then I went back to a backup of the stock ROM and it still does the same thing. So I followed a guide that updated me to the ICS update in hopes of it fixing it but it still does the same thing! Now I don't know what to do with it. I was hoping maybe someone can help or if this has happened to anyone? Thanks in advance

Yes, the miui we have has a link to racing's blue lightning. I would try miui or another ROM again, but make sure to format /system along with wiping data, cache, and davlik. Or use black hole wipe. If you don't have anything important on the internal SD (or back it up) it might be worth it to format the emmc also.

It was working alright until a newer version that was also 4.3 came out and I flashed that.
Plus I've had to format data because I messed something up with killjoy and tkmod and experience the problems I had before that so I don't think the dirty flash is the issue.

I guess I didn't make myself clear, I dirty flashed, had to reformat my data and flashed 4.3 again but still had the exact same problem that I did when I dirty flashed. A data format would be a clean flash amirite?

OK that's much more clear, a clean flash is factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache. You can also wipe system to clear out the old rom before flashing a new one.
I don't see how data formatting would fix your bugs, but keeping your data and dirty flashing 4.3 on top of 4.2.2 would certainly give you problems.
I think a clean flash will fix everything, as long as you don't restore system data from titanium backup or something.

I had to format data because I messed with ktoons and cputuner from killjoy because I'm an idiot.
I was just hoping someone had personal experience flashing between the two and could give me their personal experience. I was able to find a stable 4.3 version so it didn't even matter in the end.
I figured if I was asking a question like this it could be assumed I'm already aware that clean flashing is always the best thing to do and restating that really is of no use...
Thanks though.
And yeah, dirty flashing from 4.2.2 on PA is no problem if anyone cared.

I'm really confused what you're getting at here. You asked a question, you got your answers, then you're saying that by the way you stated your question we should already assume that you know what you're doing?
The way you stated your question didn't really sound like you understood the difference between a dirty and clean flash. Wiping your data will have an insignificant effect if there's a problem with the rom itself because you decided to dirty flash.
Snoop obviously knows his stuff, he tells you to clean flash and you ignore it and still point out the issues you're having. If you already know what you're doing then don't waste our time and ask questions you already have your answer to.
Maybe you should point out you're looking for another experience similar to yours, we were simply giving you pointers on how to fix it, which is exactly what this forum is used for.
Just a heads up, if your cpu was giving you issues, then flashing the kernel again would've fixed your problem also. Wiping your data alone won't fix anything, you essentially just erase your own data and do nothing to the rom or kernel itself.
Hopefully your problem is fixed now.
