This might be my first post ever, however, long time lurker on the boards.
I think I have a potential fix for the GPS issue with the Captivate. I don’t think this is the same as the “quick fix” found elsewhere on these and other the boards. I am not sure what (if any) 'side effects' there are to this.
My phone previously had the AT&T/Samsung fix from late September applied, although it didn’t seem to help.
Get to the Lbs test menu; previous available through *#*#1472365#*#*. However, if you previously installed the recent AT&T/Samsung (supposed fix) for the Captivate, you can’t get to the menu through the dialer. Use Anycut from market to get to the Lbs test screen.
My GPS now gets a great lock about 30 seconds.
BTW, I am not root….
YMMV. You should record your original settings prior to making these changes, just in case you need to revert.
Standard Disclaimer; I am not at fault for any issues this causes your device…..
Now, down to the settings that I use:
In Lbs test menu:
I “deleted GPS data”
Application Settings
– Session Type: Tracking
– Test Mode : S/W Test
– Operation Mode: MS Based
– Start Mode: Cold Start
– GPS Plus: Off
– Dynamic Accuracy: On
– Accuracy: 50
– Use Skyhook: Off
– Use PC Tool: Off
SUPL/CP Settings
- Server FQDN Type: Auto Config
- Server [leave what is autopulated]
- Server Port [leave was is autopopulated]
- Supl Secure Socket: On
- AGPS Mode: SUPL
Reboot.
Use GPS Test from Market, or the The “Get Position Test” menu from Lbs screen to validate.
WIFI Problem:
One thing I have noticed is that depending on the settings above, wifi (if on) sometimes inhibits the ability to see more than 1 satellite. I think the problems with GPS are overall related to Wifi in some way.
If you do not have luck with above settings, turn wifi off and see what happens.
I only had to change a couple of the settings but this is working nicely so far...Ill try again over the next day or so in various situations and report back.
Changed:
Op Mode to MS Based
Start Mode to Cold
Turned off GPS Plus
Secure Socket to off
Thanks!
I'll admit some of this seems counter-intuitive, but at this point anything is worth a shot.I'll let you know how it goes!

You don't need to download anything to access the Lbs test. Just type *#*#3214789650#*#* in the dialer and you will get access. Works with JH7 and Froyo.
Before anyone else reads this and declares their GPS fixed, they should read at least the first post of this thread completely. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=789383 If you understand what is being said by that post, then you can offer GPS solutions. The only thing you have changed is AGPS settings. While those settings will get you a lock, they don't help out with accuracy. If you really want to test your GPS, you have to turn off the use wireless networks feature, take it outside and see how well it works then.
Everything that has been said in this thread has been said elsewhere and is not a solution.
Nope, it's definitely not fixed...but it did give me a better lock than before. Same old...

Well if its not a fix then it is most definitely better...I can get a lock in ~20 seconds where as before it might not even come close.

Additionally, a lock is not enough to say it works. Take it for a drive along with another GPS device - use Google my tracks or some other tool to record your path. Even use GPS test and watch your MPH, direction and location.
You will find that it is not fixed. It works OK sometimes, but many times it is behind or inaccurate.

You will have to do that every week as your cached GPS data expires. And you can literally use any settings as long as you can use the lbstestmode to accquire a lock. That's all you need to do (accquire your first lock and it will cache the data for 5 to 7 days).
Any "fix" that involves "settings" isn't a "fix" at all since it demonstrates an utter lack of what the real problem is and how GPS fundamentally works.
The real "fix" won't come in the form of settings. Any purported settings "fix" is snake oil.
I've given up on GPS a while ago.
It's a fringe feature anyway.
I never have "use wireless networks on" and gps works good enough. It may not be perfect but everytime ive used it it has got me where i need to go no problems. It may jump off track or be slow to turn for a second but it still gets me to wherever just fine.

If I read this correctly your turning off skyhook ? I read this http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/, and to me you need it turned on for urban areas and in the city need wi-fi turned on because of the occlusions caused by buildings and such...?

That option has nothing to do with GPS. 'Use Wireless Networks' is actually quite useful for location aware apps like Google Maps, Places, Speed Test etc. where an accurate but slow GPS lock may not be needed (or even possible if you're underground or inside a concrete building). This option enables those apps to use cell tower or wi-fi signal trianglation to get a quick estimation of your current location so that apps can give you relavent information, i.e. nearby gas stations or resaurants. It has nothing to do with aGPS either.

You have to be kidding saying its a feature right? I can't believe how many say that its a feature and that it is ok that Samsung is screwing them ( along with placebo updates) . I myself love and would like a Galaxy S phone or even the new Focus 7, but its looking like it too has GPS issues from early reports with the Omnia 7.
I know most of you guys are already locked in with your carrier and don't have much choice with the GPS issue but its not a feature, its a valuable function just like placing calls, sending emails, texting, etc.. If you don't care about this, then you should of bought a Razor flip phone.
I have been keeping up with this because I really want to see Samsung resolve this and make right.

My reasons for a working GPS are as follows:
Pinpoint your location, get turn-by-turn directions to restaurants, businesses and other destinations, location-based mobile games, social networking sites, real-time position tracking, lost or stolen phone tracking, etc., etc., etc..
What I am saying is just quit making excuses for Samsung and demand what you paid for! There are people on here who would really like for their GPS to be working and rightfully so.
Oh, I agree that it should work as advertised. Can't say Samsung is ' screwing' me because they can't get it right. Would have bought the phone if I knew about it beforehand anyway. There are many other features that led me to the Cappy. Samsung does need to fix the problem and I hope they do so soon. Buy I won't try discourage anyone from Samsung products in the meanwhile.

The solution to the GPS problem is quite simple, but most people still don't see it.
If 100% accuracy and < 10 second fixes are more important to you than the rest of the Galaxy S features, then you do not want a Galaxy S phone. Either return the one you have or don't buy it. For most people, that good of a GPS is a bonus and not a requirement.
The GPS problems are not undocumented, anyone reading any reviews for the phone will realize that the GPS is not as good as other devices. Even if they don't realize it before they buy it, they have 30 days to return it. Samsung may or may not ever get the problem worked out since phones have such a short life cycle. *****ing about it in thread after thread, online petitions, and idle threats of legal action will have absolutely no impact on Samsung.
Hi to everyone,
I recently obtained an i9003 (It was probably manufactured a year ago, however I dont know to check it). I'm very happy with everything but the GPS.
I know that it has been debated a lot, I read all guides on this forum and others, I followed this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069416&highlight=gps+improve
and then tried with this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032034&highlight=gps+improve
I even installed GPS Aids v2 (but my phone is not rooted!).
I tried this fix (the piece of paper to put pressure on the antenna):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13133654#post13133654
Then I decided to open my device, and modify for the connection between the antenna and the board, like explained here for a similar device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878970
You cannot say that I didn't use the "search" button
So far these changes were not successful, at least the performance did not change perceptively.
Near the window, in a tall building (6 floors above) I don't get any satellite on view, on the balcony I get 3-4 at around 30dB (and I get a lock in with a very poor accuracy, like 300feet). Is it normal that the number of satellites is so low? I was wondering if the LTO file is the correct one, it is called north-america and I live in Europe... Is it normal?
Do you think that rooting my phone would help? I'm happy with the stock ROM so I would not like to root it just for fun.
Which additional info do you need to help me?
Thank you very much,
Michele
Its done and verified.
Root, Flash XXXKB3. Tats it.
20seconds max to get gps.
I evn use GPS Aids 2, LTO method. 15seconds...
U did use search bt u shld hv posted it to one of d already existing GPS threads....

You will need root access for this.
Download faster fix from market
Change the server to your country and set the server
If you are in India, server should be in.pool.ntp.org
So you think that the issue is coming from this LTO file? I will try and flash XXKB3 when I receive my USB cable

I finally flashed XXKB3, re-installed gps aids and faster fix, but Im not sure it improved the performance. On sunny day 100% clear sky, near to my window, I get 4-5 satellites max in view, it locks and unlocks intermittently and accuracy is 50m...
I set LTO file to europe also. Maybe my building is particularly rich on concrete?
U gt 4-5 satellites frm inside d bldg? Tats insanely freakish. I get 0.
Use GPS Aids 2 and Download LTO file.
Wen i first flashed xxxkb3, d gps locked in 30secs max, bt a few days later it stpd workig all together.
Gps Aids2 and bang!

Getting 4-5 sats in a balcony is perfectly fine. Doesn't mean hardware problem. But getting a fix using only one view of the sky is difficult.
Gps fix needs 3 sats minimum to get a 2D fix (without altitude). But the sats need to be well spread to get quick fix. Accuracy of 50 mts is best u can hope on non-us-military devices regardless of whatever accuracy reported by software or others.
Try a location where sats hav about 90 degrees seperation or more. Remember just 3 good sats are enuff. Most of the time gps rejects data from other non-geometrically-optimul sats.
Let me know if this post is any help.

My question is what is the max number of satellites were you able to lock given all ideal conditions, for me the max was 4 (took 5 mins to reach this figure under open sky) on this phone while Xperia arc and HTC wildfire were able to lock 20 satellites from the same location. Is the GPS on phone really a piece of sh1t ? Just confirm this and I am prepared to sue Samsung in consumer court over this.
Adding to this, while traveling in a vehicle the other two phones (mentioned above) were showing realtime progress of the vehicle on the road, whereas Galaxy SL was highly inaccurate and even the wrong position shown was not updated constantly.
In stock condition of d phone, GPS is really a piece of sh1t....

gps fix
hello
I hope i am in the good discussion,i am not very confident with the forum.
I have now 2 i9003,ifound the gps was working like my stand alone garmin gps, taking sometime a long time to fix some time not ,depending of the time it was swithed of or where i was.Like a gps without Agps.
So what i did is:
go to setting with dialing on the phone *#* #3214789650#*#*
I did some test and now for me it's obvious that the operation mode in application should be "MS assisted" (stand alone means that it doesn't use at all the data network to help for the first fix)
accuracy should be put at 100 ,it doesn't means that it will be more or lest acurate,i understood that if the value is lower that this it give data to your application(sygic or other). If it goes over 100 you will get something that "waiting for valid signal"
There you can do some test like i did :
-put opération mode to "stand alone"
-go back and "delete gps data"(so no satellites history)
-get position test ,in that case it can take 15 min to get a fix depending where you live.
go back to setting:
-put operation mode to "ms assisted",so it use satellites and network for the fix
-go back and "delete gps data"
-get position test,in that case it take less than 2 min.
If it's not the case check :
-go in supl/cp settings ,check the serveur ,i don't know if we can put the same serveur all over the world but i think yes,for me it work well with the default one
supl.google.com port 7276 ,secure socket off, agps mode supl
-remember you need to enable data in android menu :wireless and network, mobile network, network connection enable (that a traduction of my french menu)
for info,i have the original rom xwkb1
I hope it helps. For me it was night and day,now it works as well as my desire which was very good.
I just forgot to mention one thing,if you switch data to wifi and go inside house through a router,i think agps cannot locate you with the network,so they can't send you data, not sure about that, but that's the way agps works.(so no wifi)
For the 1st time i use GPS in SL.. I waited for 10min or even more with the orignal server which set to north america.. And i tot the gps for phone is so always like that.. but when i see this forum gps fix.. i just "whoa".. i dont even know there is gps problem in my phone..
SO.. i str8 root it.. flashed to XXKB3..
gps fix set to Asia.ntp ( i from Malaysia)
and i try get sattelite signal from outside of my hse with clear sky..
LOL --> result : none.. get 3 satilite but didn't lockon even with my wifi switched on
and then i go download gps aids .. switched on my wifi download the LTP file.
and try get sattelite signal
Result: 10GPs in 10 second and lockon immediately
I open my papago.. lOL.. position fix..
I didn't touch anything on the SUPL setting or standalone or wat
I didn't even go open my phone and put aluminium foil
Just like that..
GPS fix.. I think the gps aids is to use for searching satelite signal and lock on your position.. so when u open up the papago.. it will str8 lock on your position without waiting 10min or more..
Haahah..
edmund~ u r right!

I use Turn by Turn Navigation which has a feature to allow me to download maps for offline use. I downloaded a whole area around me and decided to test it out.
For some reason it can't locate my location without an internet connection, Why is that? Does GPS need an internet connection?

no, it's only 1215640 times faster with an internet connection, because it uses base-cell, wifis, ephemerids (oh I hope I wrote it right) downloaded from positioning servers etc...
What is your model telephone?
I have HTC Mozart and when i disable Data Transfer my GPS get fix 5sec.
A-GSP + GPS is better i now but in my model gps i very faster.
In my old Nokia n95 8gb gps get fix slowly. Only in car my gps get fix in car holder.
Mine is HTC HD7
Depends on a region where you are, I mean how many satelites are above you and etc.
Argh i guess not a lot. I live in New Zealand and its a pretty **** country
I have applied the patch as given in the below thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442032
and I'm using Reaper v1.3
Yesterday when I went for a run, 'Endomondo pro' never got a lock (in 20 minutes) though it was showing that the GPS was excellent and I was good to start my workout. Can someone check the same on other sports trackers like Runkeeper.. etc
Another weird thing I observed with the AGPS patch is that I get a GPS lock and Google Maps gives my exact position even when I'm deep inside my home (nowhere near any window). Thanks to the dev - With the patch the GPS lock times have become really fantastic but I suspect something amiss.
note: I can't post in the dev thread as I'm still new, but if this is a valid issue and faced by many we can ask someone to post the same in dev section and try and get it resolved. Thanks.

do you have turned on wlan? google is saving the position of your wlan, so it can give your home as position very fast!
try an app like "gps test" to watch how many satellites you get connected to!
I wasn't connected to WLAN, only gprs, so weird right?! I have used GPS test and yes I do see more satellites with the patch. I use sports tracker applications more frequently than navigation so its kinda more important to me that the patch is compatible with Endomondo pro.

Installed RunKeeper and tested it with Endomondo on a 10 min walk to lunch from office. Both endomondo and Runkeeper reported a gps fix within a couple of seconds but when I checked the embedded map in the respective sport app there was a big blue circle - similar to AGPS fix. My take on the issue is that these sport tracker apps are being reported of a gps fix much before a fix is established and they are not trying for a better fix?!
Anyone else facing this issue? I love the GPS patch, its making the GPS usable on my Desire S, but this is a deal breaker.

Give a chance to "Runtastic".
while testing the apps, you should look that there r no skycrapers, trees,... around you
Runtastic works fantastic and it never lost the lock during the workout.
However, I upgraded the ROM to reaper v1.4, reinstalled endomondo pro and did a few tweaks. In the endomondo location settings I disabled the 'use wireless network' option - this solves the erroneous gps lock shown on endomondo before workout starts.
One curious observation about the AGPS patch though - there was no AGPS position lock (without gps assistance) for the first time after applying the patch, but it's fine once you acquire the position through GPS assistance. I'm still evaluating the same as I find it interesting.

Hello,
my GPS doesnt work since like over 2 years. I cant find any satelites and my Google maps cant navigate me. I tried everything. Any fixes apps like GPS test or GPS Toolbar. Also i disabled the auto optimation for Apps Like GPS Test, Maps, Google play Services etc..
Also i changed my hardware with a new GPS Module. Still doesnt work. So i think its a Software Problem.
I think the reason is, that i deleted the gps.conf file. Is it possible, that someone can sent me his file?
Its normaly safed on /system/etc/gps.conf.
Im from Germany. Best settings would be from europe.
Im using the Rom TeamExyKing 9.0 Version v19.

I think your misunderstanding what GPS means.
It doesn't mean that you should be located by GPS satilite only and continously. It's now just a general term for your location on the planet.
Your phone is located by several different methods, cell tower, WiFi, and GPS. GPS satilite location requires a clear line of sight between you and the satilite which is very difficult to maintain, however GPS satellites do know the exact location of cell towers so your exact location (with 5 meters) can be triangulated from your proximity to cell towers. You are never being tracked satelite to satelite.
Does that make sense?

You need to calibrate your device when Google maps is functioning and its better to do this in a city with plenty of cell towers. Maps can be very off in rural areas.

Have a look here https://www.techrepublic.com/article/faster-gps-locking-on-your-rooted-android-device
Also the same file in your uncles phone will work in your S7
the stockrom comes without a gps config file or at least its not in system/etc, you didnt delete it ..
i guess that has something to do with the samsung location service and touchwiz bullcrap in general .. ill unpack a twrp system image today and try to search through the files , maybe its just in another folder or was renamed or both...
why ? i just got this samsung phone 2 weeks ago, and compared to my old sony z3c from 2014 the gps is really crappy , i could get a 1.5 meter fix on my sony even in the deep forest
but can only get a 7 meter fix on the samsung under clear sky and on top its also shifted a few meters, so i never walk on the sidewalk but through the buildings beside it in the maps app...

that doesnt exist in my rom (stock 8.0)
but theres a gps.xml in system/vendor/etc/gnss
there you can enable gallileo at least (although i think i have to also add xtra servers in gps.conf) today we had thunderstorms here in germany so i couldnt test my gps but it finds SOME gallileo sattelites at least (from my window)
i thought disabling baidoo would grant me some accuracy (becasue baidoo is on the other side of the world basically and they only come in weak) .. but after disabling it ,i had complete set off by 30 meters from my window , maybe my system needs some ...
i couldnt test it , but there seems to be lot of customization when using gps.xml and gps.conf correctly together. but i couldnt find any faq !?!
what i wanna know is: where exactly is the gps sensor on the s7 .. is it the small hole on the upper side of the phone ?

GPS antenna is top of phone, left to right as you look at it, cell antenna is bottom of phone left to right. Little hole is microphone. But you already changed it so you know where it is.
Just a thought have you set phone in settings to High Accuracy?

So i think i dont get any more answers. I still have the problem and it doesnt get better. So i think i have to be with that issue, that GPS doesnt work.
I will have the Samsung Galaxy s7 one more year and Change to a New Smartphone.
