[Solved] 3G & H dropped upon installing Radio - 20.76.30.0835U_3831.19.00.110 - HTC Desire S

I have flashed the new ICS firmware and radio from WWE RUU 0.76.30.0835U_3831.19.00.110 via hboot. I've noticed that there were 4 items that were updating upon flashing this. After flashing, my 3G & H were messed up/dropped/will not push through when downloading apps from playstore or in any other sites. I tried flashing my old radio but it only updates "radio_v2" and still have the same problem.
1 user data
2 tp
3 radio_v2
4 radio cust
How can I revert or change back my "user data", "tp", and "radio_cust".....?

You can't, and your 3G/H are most likely gone because you installed a fresh OS and didn't define/restore proper APN settings - though other options are possible, this is the most likely cause.
User data is /data or /cache (not sure which one is meant), it erases it.
The rest will only be flashed if you force downgrade (run misc_version and then run RUU).

I see.... It seems that I've really messed up my 3G/H not knowing that I should only flash the radio.img file using PG88IMG.zip... Is it possible to get all four (4) items from my previous firmware/radio 20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03?

Not entirely sure. You could try the way I suggested - changing the main version by using misc_version script (requires root) and running an older RUU.

Is there a link/procedure on how to run misc_version script here?
Or can I follow this the cmd commands here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28823066&postcount=17
Apologies for asking too much from you but i appreciate all your efforts to answer my queries.
btw, here are my details:
Saga PVT ENG S-Off
HBoot - 0.98.2000 (PG8810000)
Radio - 3822.09.08.20_M
coming from
Revolutionary S-Off
HBoot - 6.98.1002
Radio - 3805.06.02.03

Look at any "revert to stock" guide. They all should have this procedure.

Have to agree with Jack sounds like a missing or possibly incomplete APN related issue, post which network and country you're in and see if someone will post their working settings.
You may find that you're network provider shows the correct settings on their website
You could always take a full nandroid backup and restore the pre radio backup (if you have one) note apn settings and then restore backup and enter settings manually

I think that should be it... My APN settings were messed up when I flashed the PG88IMG.zip... I hope that there is some guides posted here on how to revert back or install their stock RUU to correct APN settings... And really, I'm searching all threads/forums here on how to run misc_version and install RUU... I've even downloaded the RUU_Saga_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.48.707.1_Radio_20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M_release_199476_signed.exe and not sure if this is the stock RUU from me... I'm from the Philippines and I got my DS from SMART Telecomms and I rooted it using Revolutionary with HBoot - 6.98.1002 and Radio - 3805.06.02.03. Now, I've managed to upgrade to HBoot - 0.98.2000 (PG8810000) and Radio - 3822.09.08.20_M. Currently, I'm using Endy 3.5 now previously on Fallout v5.
This is a nice community to be with and I appreciate all your comments/tutorials/suggestions.

Not sure if I'm reading all the guides pretty well but I'm seeing a HTCDev unlocked going back to stock. Not sure if all those procedure can be applied on a rooted DS via Revolutionary like me.... I guess, I'll try to search harder from here but if you could direct me to some posts relevant to me is greatly appreciated.... I've already used/search the [INDEX] section by the way all the time....

just checking, if you perform full wipe and then flash clean endymion install you still don't get working mobile data? Check your mobile network supplier website for settings, I know here in UK that they will be displayed
Do you not have any available backups that you can return to?
I'm on same radio as you without any issues, although different boot loader version, see links in my signature.

I already perform full wipe every time I flash a certain rom. The thing is, my mobile date is all working but not fully functional in terms of downloading apps from playstore and other sites that I usually downloading. At first, the download will start and seconds, the H sign will stop and after 10 secs or more, it will resume again, back again from stopping and resuming again all over again. It takes me to finish the download from just a minute and now it takes all most an hour. It went wrong when I flashed the firmware and radio from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30875781&postcount=1 and not knowing that the PG88IMG.zip has several files in it including the radio.img. I flashed it and it flash all 4 items listed below:
1 user data
2 tp
3 radio_v2
4 radio cust
Afterwards, my mobile data connection were messed up literally when downloading some apps/files. But, in web browsing, it is lightning fast to load all sites. Like what I said, it takes an hour or 30mins just to complete one (1) app from playstore. I didn't experience this before as my mobile data were really fast in terms of downloading and web browsing. When I read all the comments/replies from the forums, they say that there were several files embedded in the PG88IMG.zip and the right thing to do is just to flash the radio.img only. I tried flashing also different radio.img (PG88IMG.zip) but the update is only for "radio_v2". I really wanna revert back the "user data", "tp", and "radio cust" to normal.

You don't need to install RUU to correct APN settings. Just correct them manually.

All right, I'll check my APN settings but not sure what is the default settings it before because my APN settings says:

Not sure what is messed up here because when I hit the drop down button for each one it is like answering an objective type test leaving your no options to choose from....

Hearing that the mobile data works for browsing suggests that apn are ok, this could simply be a temporary issue with your network provider?
your sd card isn't full is it? Try a new sd card?
Confused......
DO YOU HAVE ANY BACKUPS FROM BEFORE RADIO FLASH?

I'm afraid I have no any back ups of my default radio... But seeing in this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15832698&postcount=1, my radio is there so I'm assured that if there is anything went wrong I can easily go back from my previous radio. And again, all the file listed here were containing radio.img and txt file only. Flashing any of those doesn't revert my mobile data connection (downloading) back to normal..
I've managed to get some default APN settings from my network provider in their site and will try it first then try to download apps and other stuffs using my DS. I will report back here if it will help me or not... :fingers-crossed:
Also, I'm using a 16GB class10 sdcard and I don't like getting it full. So I'm letting almost 1GB free space in it all the time.

Try reverting to default apn to see if it makes any difference.
But it could be an issue with your network not your device. So it may resolve itself.
Sd card was just an idea, I'd still recommend that you try a blank alternate card just to rule the SD card out

I've already called my service providers customer service to check if my APN settings were in default. They said that it is in default settings and maybe a signal/connection drop/problem from where I am (will try to download a rom using my DS tomorrow when I get to my office where I can see the full potential of my hspda speed at its best) is the main cost. They've also mentioned on using a separate sdcard aside from the one I'm using right now. Will report back on this as I left my spare sdcards at the office. If this will work, I will have to buy a new sdcard then and maybe there is something wrong from the write/read speed of my current sdcard.
Again, thank you to Jack_R1 and ben_pyett for lending their busy time responding to my query......

I've already tested my hspda speed here in office and I'm still experiencing the stop and go issue with the H icon (not downloading continuously)... I will test it again with new sdcard to see if the stop and go issue will be gone...
Just a wild question, is my problem something to do with the build.prop? I've checked the line items of my build.prop and it seems that it is lacking some line items.... Do I need to edit it and add some line items in it like what I've seen Here and Here?

I very much doubt it that's it's build.prop related
Edit: I take back this comment

I think your best option is to take your phone back to stock by flashing http://www.filefactory.com/file/c0a...5AU_3805.06.02.03_M_release_199476_signed.exe. You'll need to run misc_version as indicated previously.

I've already downloaded it but I can't run the misc_version until I read a post that is related to Revolutionary rooted DS. All posts here were related to HTCdev unlock DS's and I don't know if their instructions can be used for Revolutionary rooted DS's. Also, if I install the stock ROM from RUU, it will revert back the functionality of my DS when I got it from my network provider? Also, does it take my s-off and root and I will be s-on and unrooted?

Prevent 3G connection after starting new ROM/wipe

Hi dev's,
I've troubles with my mt3g(vf) after flashing a new rom or doing a wipe.
Because I've no data rate everytime a new rom starts up I'm spending up to 5 € on a few seconds of data connection, till i can go to flymode/change apn/use a data block app...
And no - I don't need some offers of data rates (in my area I have wifi nearly everywere)
Maybe there is a way to stop the android connecting to 3G, like an adb command (usb debug is off?) or a way to change the apn by accessing the system before booting (in fastboot e.g.) or editing the apn in the rom-file before...
If you have any ideas to handle this, leave a comment please!
I'd like to test more of your rom's this way and instead of paying my provider for nothing, the money is much better invested by buying you a "beer"
so maybe anyone knows how i can pass the romfile check in recovery (while flashing the zip). I can edit the apns in /system/etc/apns-conf.xml ,but i need to pass this check while flashing...can't find any kitchen or so...must be only a little tool...give me a hint, please
This thread should be in the general section. Call your provider and ask them to turn off your data connection. I had to do it some time ago.

Thanks for your help!
I tried this once, but can't then sign into g-account (was neccessary) but good idea, maybe with 2.1 now it will work (you can sign in later).
will try this next time, but it can't be so hard to edit a rom? Because i have done it...only want to make a working rom out of that, which passes the file-check in the recovery... maybe it does a md5-check or somthing else...
btw i think this is in the right category, i try to flash a rom and preventing 3g to connect by adb commands or by editing a rom!

Data problems on all roms above 2.3.3

I know i'm not the only one having this problem, its been posted about before but no answers so id like to see if someone else who didn't get to see those can see this and come up with a solution..
I use an unlocked G2X with Cincinnati Bell, currently running Weapon. I have no problem at all on any rom though that is 2.3.3, any rom over that like 2.3.4, 2.3.4 etc data has NEVER worked, not i had it but lost it when i rebooted, never . i've never been able to run CM7 or MIUI because of this, and yes before someone suggests it my APN settings are correct i've checked them 1000 times they are the same as when on 2.3.3 roms, i've hard booted after to try to get data flowing a million times, i've followed installation instructions 100 percent and still have never had data working on those roms.
even on the new CM7 where the APN issue is fixed, data still does not work. Its obviously something in roms over 2.3.3 that is creating this problem. I BEG, BEG someone please help find an answer i would love you and most likely donate. Thanks.

You obviously haven't been checking the Development Section lately. There are many threads on this issue, and it has been fixed already. (Well, for the most part)

I've been following the development threads, because I too have been having data issues deeper than just missing APNs. It actually seems to be an issue with the entire radio side as a whole on any rom that's not based on the factory firmware. It's become much more stable, but still I can only get a GPS instant lock immediately after a hard reboot and can only receive multimedia messages immediately after a reboot as well. Another thing I've noticed, is I will get a "No internet connection" warning whenever I open the browser, despite having a data connection, and the page still loads.
Also, why do I have to set all my carrier information (my phone number, and voicemail number specifically) when the other factory firmware roms can pull this from the sim card?
I love all the features of CM7 and it's based roms, but the data stability has made it unusable for me.

You can't edit T-MO's one. You can copy and make a duplicate of that and then edit it, but that just beats the point.
And yeah I STILL have the same problem.
I'm not a t-mobile customer so I need to add my APN manually. And yes after a hard I can see my list of APNs and I'm allowed to add APNs but still no data. even after the latest stable version. And even after that with the Dragon Kernel with the supposed APN fix.
Really hope someone can shed some light here.

oh ok try going into recovery menu and wipe all data then boot up again maybe then you can see the apn
Since you are rooted go into adb and try the following. Download the attached zip file and extract the "apns-conf.xml" file and put it in the same directory you run adb from. Then execute the following adb commands.
# adb shell mv /system/etc/apns-conf.xml /system/etc/apns-conf.xml.bak
# adb push apns-conf.xml /system/etc/apns-conf.xml
# adb shell chmod 644 /system/etc/apns-conf.xml
Then go into apn settings and press menu and choose to restore to default. The TMO one will still show but now your Cincinnati Bell one should show also; and it will be a default apn like TMO now (they are on equal footing now). Make sure you press the radio button to make the Cincinnati Bell one green, it it wasn't already. Hopefully your data will work after this. Plus you will now have global apn settings automatically for virtually any sim you use from a GSM carrier worldwide.

Thanks for the help, I'm not where near an xda and phone "noob" but i have never used adb I wouldn't feel comfortable trying to do that if it risks bricking my phone. Unless you have any opinion on how doing it or if its not really complicated I don't think I will try that.

There is no risk of bricking your phone if you stick to the commands I gave you. Just highlight and copy them and you can paste them into the command prompt window by right clicking and selecting paste.
Download the attached zip with the adb.exe and two dlls need for it to run. All you are doing is backing up the apn configuration file, replacing it with a new one and setting permissions so the phone can use the new file. Then you reset the apns to default and the phone will set the apns from that file based on the sim in the phone.
Go into settings, applications and turn on usb debugging, if it is not on already. Then connect your phone to your computer and make sure the adb drivers load (you can find the driver pack by searching this site or installing them from the LG Updater app). To make sure the phone is connected in the command prompt window type "adb devices" and hit enter. The phone should be shown as connected. If not, the drivers are not installed.
Run the command prompt from the same directory where you unzip the three adb files and put the apns-conf.xml file in the same directory. That makes it easier for you to do this. It is actually quite simple and will take only a minute or so.
Flashable zip to replace apns-conf.xml file
Here is a flashable zip that can be installed with clockworkmod recovery. It does the same thing but does not back up your existing file. If you are running a stock rom this will prevent an ota from installing. If you are running a custom rom it doesn't matter as you cannot get ota updates anyway.
Just boot into CWM recovery and flash this zip file. Reboot and reset your apns to default.

I have some problem and something more.
GPRS data will not work, my default APN is mss.life.com.by, and I see arrows in my status bar, but internet not worked.
So, I changed it to internet.life.com.by(got it from operator instructions) and I anymore see arrows and internet still not work.

You must rename the downloaded file exactly "PD98IMG.zip". Once you do that, place on the root of your SD card (i.e. put it on the sd card). Once there, boot into bootloader and it should find the file and flash the radio. I cannot stress enough 2 things. You MUST name the file exactly "PD98IMG.zip" or it will not recognize the file. Also, if you have hide extension preference on, you may not need to add the .zip part to the end of the file. If you do add the .zip and it doesn't recognize in hboot, and you have named it exactly "PD98IMG.zip" then delete the .zip part and try again. Secondly, check the md5 number to be sure you didn't download a corrupt file. More times then not its fine but I cannot stress enough that only bad things can happen if you flash a corrupt radio. Lastly, search search search! there are numerous threads, especially in the dev section (1st thread) that details how to flash radios. Below I've added the link, while the radio that you're about to flash is on the DHD forum, the method to flash is still the same in the provided link below. If this has helped you, know where the thanks button is
FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS!
Edit: Uhm, not sure what you mean by does this do radio off? If you ran the hack kit and you have successfully installed Bindroid, you should be rooted with S-Off, enabling you to flash the radio with the above mentioned method..in bootloader it should say S-off, again though if you have flashed bindroid, you are rooted successfully I would think..
I did what you told me and its not working for some reason. What could this be? Says something like Wrong Image.
Tried flashing Radio with the toolkit too, it goes through the process but radio is the same.... So frustrating.
Stop. You can't just take any file and rename it to PD98IMG and it will magically work. There needs to be a script included to actually run it correctly. Now if you hold on for a while, I made a PD98IMG file for this radio a while ago for someone else. Let me look for it and I will post back.
The hack kit gives you S-OFF. That's all you need to flash a radio PD99IMG file. Also, please post if you have the Inspire or the DHD. Just curious.
thanks, I will wait. What I did was put the file in root, do a restart into bootloader, select hboot then started running saying wrong P98IMG.zip. Tried 3 different methods and no go. I have an inspire 4g from ATT and has the gingerbread stock radio on it. I want a new radio due to horrible battery life. I noticed that it gives me 3.9v instead of 4.2, is this a problem?
Before I post the file, please make sure you delete any other PD98IMG zip files that are on your sd card.
Yeah I know, also what method should I use with your file?
It seems it was the RADIO i was looking the problem. I put in this one,
Radio w/RCDATA: 12.59.60.26P_26.11.04.21_M
MD5 Sum: 57cccef401c372c6d421c986ee42e0fe and flashing worked perfectly. Guess Ill try this one for a while.
Boot into Hboot. You can do this by these methods. First go into your menu settings and it is usually under Power. Make sure the option for Fasboot is unchecked. After this power phone off. After phone is powered off, hold down the volume down key and keep pressing it. While still pressing volume down key press power buttonfor a second or two. You can let go of the volume button as soon as the white Hboot screen shows up. The phone will scan for files and find the PD98IMG file. It will then ask you if you want to update. Press the correct volume key to accept. DO NOT POWER OFF THE PHONE DURING THE UPDATE. It should take less than a minute. Once it is done, press power to reboot. After phone is running, make sure you delete PD98IMG file off of sd card. It will save you a headache if you ever need to go back into Hboot. Link is posted. Before you transfer to sd card, rename the file to exactly "PD98IMG", without the quotes. Just delete the underscore and the ending I added.

If you flash a radio file then make sure you flash the matching RIL file in recovery, not Hboot. In recovery options, go to mounts, mount system, then go back and select the RIL zip file to flash.
thanks alot, will try with the one you posted now. I was able to flash with another radio so it was that one specifically that was bad or w.e.
If you are going to use the ATT 421 radio you just posted, then flash the RIL file in recovery like I described. Flash the matching RIL file in recovery, not Hboot. In recovery options, go to mounts, mount system, then go back and select the RIL zip file to flash. I am posting the RIL for the radio you just listed and for the one I posted, which will end in 4.19.
I am also including a program created by ZikyHD. Install it on your phone. It is an easy way to check and see what radio and RIL you have installed.
ahhh! my apologies!! I thought he pulled the radio file from the same page I did (not the case) holy crap what a bonehead move by me! Wolf good man! I'm using BinDroid too and flashed the recommended radio recently and pulled the file from a different page...glad Wolf got you straightened out..I should have just posted the PD98IMG I had, glad wolf is on his game better then I am. Assumptions are really killing me lately!
It happens, but be careful when messing around with radio files because you can brick your phone if it messes up. To the OP, make sure you check the previous post made by me for additional information and downloads. Also let us know how it worked out. Test any new radio for at least a few days to a week. It needs to settle down. Remember, what works well for some people in their area may not work well for you, and vice versa.

I always take extreme caution when dealing with radios...and I cannot stress enough how important it is to delete the radio off the SD card..what nightmare that can become if you softbrick or something...not that I learned that the hard way or anything
I tried installing that app to check the RIL, doesn't phone says its not recognized.

well at the risk of making myself an ass again, I use terminal commands to check my ril..as far as I know it does work. If you want to take this route, download your favorite terminal app (I use terminal emulator). Open a command windown and type "su" and hit enter. First time it should prompt you to allow superuser permission. Allow it. then type: getprop "gsm.version.ril-impl" and hit enter. It will display the RIL file and hopefully the one you're expecting!
What phone do you have? That should work with most phones. It an Android program. If you are having trouble installing it then try a program like Easy Installer from the market. You can also run terminal commands on your phone or your computer to check the radio/RIL information.
In phone terminal, type the following after typing su and hitting enter:
getprop "gsm.version.ril-imp"
In command prompt, ADB, type the following after adb shell:
getprop "gsm.version.ril-impl"
Edit: Looks like I did not pay attention and refresh the screen. MMM answered the question. To the OP, what phone do you have and I am assuming the radio flash worked.
Thanks alot bro, with your file it was the only way I could this radio to install, tried alot of other methods and it would't work. Thanks alot again.

[GUIDE]How to flash CM/CM based 4.4.4 to 6.0+ ROMs on SCH-S968C and setup SIM/APN

INTRO:
The mission of this thread is to make some potentially important information available to all users that have the SCH-S968C(All Tracfone carrier models) that has been gathered over the last year and a half for flashing CM/CM based ROMs on the SCH-S968C .
Though this information is available in many other places, I'm collecting it all into one place to try and make it as painless as possible for everyone with the SCH-S968C. This guide is a long one and has many steps but I've attempted to make it as straightforward as possible for those that are new to rooting and flashing.
BACKSTORY:
Starting from some time in 2014 there have been a lot of users with the SCH-S968C that have flashed a CM11/CM12/CM13 or CM11/CM12/CM13 based custom ROM and didn't have mobile data(3G) or even no cellular signal after flashing and were like:
"OH MY GOD! WHAT DID I DO!?"
Then they would start flashing other ROMs or flashing back to stock to straighten the issue out, only to find that didn't help and none of the typical or expected solutions would correct the issue. Many were flashing modems and swapping system files in an effort to get data working, all of which ended with either a non-working device or a bricked device, do not try the things they tried, that is not the fix for the situation.(if you are one of the ones that lost signal and can't get it back even on stock, I'll discuss the fix for that in TROUBLESHOOTING at the end of this guide).
THE REASON:
These users would have no signal after flashing because unfortunately, these ROMs are built for the Verizon S3 SCH-I535 but the SCH-S968C can flash them(it actually has the SCH-I535 Verizon motherboard with 4G disabled in the hardware, making it 3G only). The Verizon S3 is a 4G/LTE device, Verizon uses a CDMA 4G/LTE SIM in their 4G devices to regulate 4G data. This SIM requirement is built into the ROMs themselves. Even though the SCH-S968C is a 3G device, this makes these ROMs require a CDMA 3G/4G/LTE SIM when flashed on the SCH-S958C to receive at least data(some of the ROMs even require it for cellular service also, not just data).
The discussion of all of this about the SIM, what has been tried to bypass the SIM and the things discovered to leave the SIM and get everything working at its best can be found in THIS THREAD. Most of the issues and fixes for the KK and newer ROMs, all the troubleshooting and fixes associated to getting working data/MMS/SIM correctly configured along with restoring if you have issues can be found in the linked thread, mostly toward the end and not so much the middle.
***PREREQUISITES***
]1[-Rooted Galaxy S3(SCH-S968C) obviously, lol.
]2[-(Optional)If you're going to use PC to do your downloading and moving files then you'll need the "USB drivers for Samsung phones"(install on PC), download: HERE
]3[-ES File Explorer installed, download: HERE
]4[-Terminal Emulator installed, download: HERE
]5[-TWRP Manager or Flashify installed.
]*[ Download TWRP Manager: HERE
]*[Download Flashify: HERE
]*[(Optional)For those that manually download the .img with a mobile browser, it will be in your download folder, those with PC download it then transfer it to the device where you can find it, flash it with Flashify. Download TWRP .img: HERE.
]6[-CDMA 3G/4G/LTE SIM(absolutely MUST have a SIM or you won't get mobile data/MMS to work), below is a list of SIMs that should work and the results of using them, you'll need a micro SIM or a full-size SIM trimmed to fit micro(a nano SIM with adapter to fit micro will work as long as it is a CDMA, not a GSM SIM).
]*[Previously activated Verizon 4G LTE SIM.($3-5 on eBay)
(results are APN settings are accessible and mobile data/MMS works correctly)
]*[New, never activated Verizon SIM
(most users with a new SIM have working mobile data(3G) but have had issues accessing APN settings to get MMS working, some have had no issue accessing APN settings, some users with a new SIM also had a random dialing issue that would dial a *2289X number, the cause was never identified, this issue doesn't happen with a previously activated Verizon 4G/LTE SIM).
]*[Straight Talk BYOP CDMA 4G/LTE SIM(not the AT&T/T-Mobile SIM, those are GSM and won't work)(I haven't been able to verify if there is a difference between used and new ST SIMs but mobile data should work and if APN settings are accessible you should be able to get MMS working, hopefully users will post their results here with new and used ST SIM).
]7[ (Optional)-Titanium Backup installed, download: HERE
***PREPARING BEFORE FLASHING***
***NOTE***For the users that don't have a PC to do their downloading and file moving, I'll provide instructions for using ES File Explorer to do everything.***NOTE***
***NOTE***You can use your PC instead of ES File Explorer for everything EXCEPT copying /efs, this step will be done using the device to keep it simple for those that don't have PC and because PC method to pull a copy of /efs is a bit technical for the average user, I will only be explaining for using ES File Explorer.***NOTE***
]1[-For steps later in this guide(and for general purposes), you'll need to enable Root Explorer and mount R/W in ES File Explorer. To do this open ES File Explorer and tap the menu button.

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

}
]2[-Tap the "Tools" tab.
]3[-Scroll down the menu and tap the words "Root Explorer"(not the toggle switch), it will turn on when you tap the words(grant superuser/root permission if prompted).
]4[-Tap "Mount R/W".
]5[-Your list of partitions may be different than mine but generally you want all partitions EXCEPT firmware-mdm set to RW as shown in screenshot. Tap OK when done.
]6[-It is recommended to make a NVdata backup to protect IMEI then save a copy of your /efs folder before flashing custom ROMs. IMEI is very easy to lose depending on what you flash and the order you flash it in with this device.
]*[(RECOMMENDED)Comprehensive guide to backing up IMEI/efs HERE
]*[For those that don't have a PC, open the Terminal Emulator app and type:
su(press enter, grant superuser/root permission if prompted)
Then type:
reboot nvbackup(press enter, the device will reboot).
]*[This saves NVdata/IMEI to be restored later if flashing wipes IMEI, instructions for restoring posted below in TROUBLESHOOTING).
]7[- It is also recommended to save a copy of your /efs folder on your extsdcard, we will use ES File Explorer. Open ES File Explorer and take note of what your extsdcard is labeled as and remember it, you'll need to know this later, then swipe from right to left to go a page over.
]8[-Tap the / symbol.
]9[-Press and hold the /efs folder to highlight it then tap the "More" button at the bottom.
]10[-Tap "Copy to"
]11[-Tap the arrow at the top left(what it says will be different depending on the ROM you're using).
]12[-Remember the name of your extsdcard? Select your extsdcard.
]13[-When you get to your extsdcard, tap "OK"(Those with PC can now connect to PC and save a copy of /efs on PC, you may have to enable MTP in the USB options that pop up when you connect device to PC to grant the PC access to device storage).
]14[-Open Titanium Backup(grant superuser/root permission if prompted while using Titanium Backup), backup all apps/data/settings you want to keep(Follow the guide I linked to determine what you want and what is safe to restore after flashing a new ROM, some things won't restore in a new ROM without causing issues), instructions for using Titanium Backup HERE.
]15[-To simplify moving files and to keep everyone on the same page when finding your files when you flash them we will create a folder on extsdcard and name it ABC(or whatever you want as long as you know which one it is), this will make it easy to find in TWRP when you flash your ROM.
Open ES File Explorer and select your extsdcard.(Those with PC can use PC to do this)
]16[-Tap the "New" button.
]17[-Tap "Folder".
]18[-Name the folder "ABC"(or whatever you choose) then tap OK.
]19[-Download the KK/LP/MM d2lte or d2vzw ROM(s) of your choice and store it/them in the folder you created on your extsdcard. You will find ROMs, custom recoveries, custom kernels and various other mods that can be used on the SCH-S968C in the links below.
]*[ROMs+other mods: HERE
]*[More ROMs: HERE
***EXTREME CAUTION***(DO NOT use anything that says STOCK/STOCK based or TW(TouchWiz) in its name, nothing that says firmware or modem, nothing that mentions Safestrap Recovery or Flashfire, locked Bootloader(BL). All of these things are specifically for the Verizon SCH-I535 and will almost certainly lead to hard bricking your device if you attempt to use them.***EXTREME CAUTION***
]20[-Download the appropriate Gapps for the ROM(s) you chose and store it/them in the folder you created(the version of Gapps you need should be mentioned wherever you get your ROM from).
]21[-Charge battery to full.
]22[-Now you're safely prepared to start the flashing process, proceed to the next steps.
***FLASHING TWRP***
It is recommended to always use the newest version of TWRP available for best results. If you already have the newest version then skip to FLASHING YOUR ROM, if you don't have it then follow instructions below.
To make this easy for those that are new or don't have a PC, we will use TWRP Manager or Flashify to flash TWRP, or by manually downloading the TWRP .img(linked above) then flashing it in Flashify.
***FLASHING WITH TWRP MANAGER***
]1[-Open TWRP Manager(grant superuser/root permission at any time while using TWRP Manager). Tap "Device Name".
]2[-Scroll down the list and select "Samsung Galaxy S3 Verizon d2vzw".
]3[-Tap "Recovery Version to install".
]4[-Select the newest version available.
]5[-Tap "Install Recovery".
]6[-The .img will download.
]7[-When the .img downloads it will prompt you to verify the partition to flash to, verify you have the same thing and tap "yes".
]8[-When the .img finishes flashing, you will be prompted to reboot to recovery, tap "yes".
***NOTE***Skip to BACKING UP YOUR STOCK ROM if you used this method to flash TWRP.***NOTE***
***NOTE***If you've tried this and you're having issues with this method, refer to the method below***NOTE***
***FLASHING WITH FLASHIFY***
]1[-Open Flashify and tap "Recovery Image"(grant superuser/root permission if promoted while using Flashify).
]2[-If you manually downloaded the .img(linked above as an option in PREREQUISITES), tap "Choose file", then select it from your download folder or wherever you stored it then skip over the next two steps below this one for downloading the .img in Flashify.
If you haven't manually downloaded the .img, skip this step and go to the next step to download the .img in Flashify.
]3[-Tap "Download TWRP".
]4[-Select the newest version available.
]5[-The .img will download(it will be downloaded in /flashify/recoveries/twrp/ folder if you ever need to find it.
]6[-When it downloads or when you select the .img from storage, it will prompt you to flash the recovery.img, tap "yup".
]7[-After it flashes, tap "Reboot now".
]8[ Proceed to BACKING UP YOUR STOCK ROM.
***BACKING UP YOUR STOCK ROM***
]1[-When you are booted to TWRP, if you are still on stock and you haven't made a NANDroid backup, make it now by selecting the "backup" option before you flash anything!(Very important step)
]2[-Tap "Select Storage".
]3[-Select your extsdcard(Micro SDCard), select OK.
]4[-The default partitions selected to backup are fine, swipe the slider to confirm, this NANDroid backup can be used at any point in the future to restore the device to stock if you have issue or ever want/need to.
]5[-Press the Home button in TWRP to return to the Main screen and proceed to FLASHING YOUR ROM.
***FLASHING YOUR ROM***
]1[-While still in recovery after making your stock NANDroid, remove battery cover and insert SIM then replace cover.
]2[-Tap "Wipe".
]3[-You'll see "Wipe Data, Cache and Dalvik(not including internal storage)" at the top, swipe the slider to perform the wipe and wait for it to finish.
]4[-Tap the Home button in TWRP to return to main screen, select "Install".
]5[-Select "Up a level".
]6[-Select "external_sd".
]7[-Select the "ABC" folder you created(or whatever name you chose for the folder, scroll down the list if needed).
]8[-Select your ROM.zip.
]9[-Tap "Add more zips".
]10[-Select your Gapps.zip.
]11[-Swipe the slider to confirm the flash.
]12[-After flashing, tap "Wipe cache/dalvik".
]13[-Swipe the slider to confirm.
]14[-Tap "Reboot System".
]15[-Wait for the phone to boot(It will take 10-20 minutes to fully load), when it boots into Setup Wizard, stop and watch the status bar Network Signal icon, wait for the device to detect the SIM, when the icons shows a signal(and 3G if you're lucky, if you are not getting any 3G then just get on WiFi to finish setup if you have WiFi or if you don't have WiFi, skip setup and go on to SETTING UP DEVICE AND SIM, you can sign in to Google to finish setup after you get the SIM and APNs set up), then go through Setup Wizard to set up the device and sign in to your Google account. When you're in the phone, continue to setup steps below.
***SETTING UP DEVICE AND SIM***
***NOTE***Your system settings may look different depending on your ROM but the settings should be the same or similar, find the settings described wherever they are in your ROM and set them to what is posted.***NOTE***
]1[-Go to System Settings>About>Build Number.
]2[-Tap build number at least 7 times quickly to enable Developer Options(you'll get a toast message saying you have enabled development options).
]3[-Go to System Settings>Developer Options.
]4[-Set Root Access to "apps and adb".
]5[-While still in developer options, verify USB debugging is on(neither is needed for setup but turning them on now prevents potentially confusing issues later).
]6[-Open your dialer app and dial:
*228(if your SIM is a Verizon SIM), press send, this programs the SIM, hangup when done.
OR
*2289X(if your SIM is a Straight Talk SIM(or any other Tracfone variant CDMA SIM). I can't confirm the actual number, I haven't used this SIM), if your SIM is a ST BYOP CDMA 4G/LTE SIM then this number should program the SIM, I can't confirm that though, if it doesn't we'll have to hope someone that used ST 4G posts what they had to do, hang up when done.
]7[-Go to System Settings>Mobile Networks(tap the words, not the toggle switch.
]8[-Set Preferred Network to "3G".
]9[-Set CDMA Subscription to "NV".
]10[-Select Access Point Names.
]11[-Then select one of the existing APN sets on the list(any set, it doesn't matter, do not create a new set, you have to edit an existing set or they won't save, your list won't look the same as mine).
]12[-Edit the APNs using either set I have posted, the Tracfone set should work on all Tracfone network variants. Change only the values listed.
]*[Tracfone APNs, enter the name of your Tracfone network Carrier variant in the Name value(These APNs are for all Tracfone devices including BYOP devices).
Name: (Your network variant)
APN: tfdata
Port: 80
MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
MMS Proxy: mms3.Tracfone.com
MMS Port: 80
]*[Verizon APNs(these will also work on the Tracfone variants since they are on Verizon towers).
Name: verizon
APN: internet
MMSC: http://MMS.vtext.com/servlets/mms
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 012
APN Type: internet,mms
]13[-When you've entered the APNs, tap the menu button.
]14[-Save the edited APNs, the set you create might disappear but they are still there and will still work as normal.
***NOTE***If you flashed a 4.4+ ROM first and now you want to go up to 5.0+/6.0+ and you have working data, now would be a good time to reboot to TWRP to flash the 5.0+/6.0+ ROM and Gapps like instructed in the above steps. When you get them flashed, do these same steps to make sure everything is set where it needs as you go back through everything.(or dirty flash with no factory reset, only wipe cache and dalvik after flashing and ONLY as long as it is an update to the same ROM you are using, for example, CM11 to CM12 or AICP 5.0 to AICP 6.0, hopefully dirty flashing will let you keep APNs configured in some of the newer ROMs that don't give access to APN settings instead of having no way to change APNs in your new ROM, also, some of the ROMs don't have the settings built in the ROM because they have World APNs so shouldn't need the settings configured)***NOTE***
]15[-Reboot the device to reload settings.
]16[-After the device reboots you should have working mobile data and MMS(You can sign in to your Google account now if you had to skip it in setup), install Titanium backup using the copy of the app you placed on extsdcard then open Titanium Backup and restore all the data you backed up in Titanium Backup, reboot after restoring data from Titanium Backup.(You will need to go to System Settings>Security>Unknown Sources and turn it on to install Titanium Backup if you're installing from a copy you manually saved, or you can install it again from the Google Playstore)
]17[-Remember to set Root Explorer and mount R/W in ES File Explorer as described in PREPARING BEFORE FLASHING section posted above before proceeding to the next step.
]18[-Once everything is set up the way you want, mobile data/MMS are correctly configured and all data is restored from Titanium Backup, you can boot to TWRP and make a new NANDroid backup of your custom ROM with everything working, this can also be used to restore later if you have issues. Remember, at this point you should have a stock NANDroid backup and a custom NANDroid backup if you've followed the instructions, either can be used when/if you need it. Reboot after making the new NANDroid backup.
]19[-Enjoy!!!

***Troubleshooting***
]1[-ISSUE-You've tried flashing a CM12/CM13 or CM based Lollipop/Marshmallow ROM but you are getting a bootloop.
]A[-POSSIBLE FIX- Did you wipe data/wipe cache/wipe dalvik cache before/after flashing then rebooting?
]B[-POSSIBLE FIX- When coming from stock to Lollipop or newer it is sometimes necessary to do a clean install when flashing the ROM, to clean install, Boot to TWRP, select "Wipe".
]*[Then select "Advanced Wipe".
]*[Then select "System" and "Data" partitions(do not select any other partitions). Swipe the slider to confirm the wipe.
]*[Tap the home button and continue by flashing ROM and Gapps normally as posted in FLASHING YOUR ROM above.
]2[-ISSUE- You flashed a ROM and lost Signal.
]A[-POSSIBLE FIX- Check Network Settings to verify you're set to 3G and NV, if you flashed a custom ROM before this and had working data then flash back to that ROM and check network settings in that ROM also.
]B[-POSSIBLE FIX- Check System Settings>About>Status>IMEI and verify you still have IMEI. If you have lost IMEI then follow steps below.
]*[(Recommended)-Refer to the Comprehensive guide to backup IMEI/efs to restore IMEI HERE
]*[-Open Terminal Emulator and type:
su (press enter, grant superuser/root permission if prompted)
Then type:
reboot nvrestore (press enter, this will restore your IMEI)
]*[-Restoring the nvbackup using Terminal Emulator erases the backup from where it was saved so you'll need to make another NVdata backup using the same method described above in the PREPARING BEFORE FLASHING section.
]*[-Copy your efs folder back to its location on your device(overwrite the existing file if needed), reboot device.
]3[-ISSUE- You flashed a 6.0 CM/CM based ROM and now your PC sees your device but isn't seeing your device storage.
]A[-Possible fix- When device connects you'll see a notification in status bar, pull down notifications and open options, select MTP.
***NOTE***THIS THREAD(linked above also) discusses various issues when flashing these ROMs and using SIM, remember to patiently read through it if you have issues and you'll probably find your answer, the issues and fixes are spread through many months of posts so it's not going to be a fast find, but with diligence to suffer through the agony of reading posts you'll most likely find your answer***NOTE***
Hello. Nice guide here. Only problem I have is APN settings not accessible with cm 12.1 and a new ST SIM card. Tried to visit link for different ROMs and everything on fixin SIM/MMS, but links are broken.

The links work fine for me, try a different browser or something.
As stated in my guide, new, never activated SIMs usually can't access APNs but previously activated ones can, get a used Verizon SIM from eBay for $3-5, they have APNs stored on the SIM, this allows you to edit them.
Or you can try different ROMs to see if APNs are accessible, some can and some can't because some of the ROMs have world APNs built in(these don't have APN settings), the ones without world APNs should be able to access APN settings.

I ended up doing a clean install of octos 6.0 ROM and works like a charm. No Verizon SIM needed. Flawless for me so far. Regardless , your posts taught me a lot on multiple sites. Amazing the s3 can run android 6.0. Cheers

Are the APNs saving when you can access them? If so then a reboot shouldn't reset everything. You have to edit an existing set or they won't save, creating a new set won't save, only editing existing sets works.

Are the APNs saving when you can access them? If so then a reboot shouldn't reset everything. You have to edit an existing set or they won't save, creating a new set won't save, only editing existing sets works.

Leaving the rest of them won't harm anything, you can delete them if you want but once they are gone there's no getting them back.
In my experience, I've seen better results with a used SIM from Verizon, they are easy to get and cheap for $3 to $5 on eBay.

I didn't quite understand that, can you clarify what you're saying?
Are you saying the APNs are disappearing?
Typically on this device, when you edit and save they disappear but still work, that's normal for this device if that is what you mean.

After dialing *228 im given the apn list. One of them works from the start with no modifications and is named straight talk. But after rebooting the phone the list will be blank and say apn setting not available for this user(data works but no mms). If i dial it again the list returns and the phones mms works onces again. Im guessing this is the errors you have been talking about but i got the sim card befor your guild.
I will most likely buy another card used but im not much of an ebay user
And im sorry my English is vary bad

The apn it defaults to and works on is basically blank but it works. As long as i dont restart the phone. I have not tested to see what happens over a long period of time, my guess is it will eventually stop working again. But i will keep my phone on over night and see if i can mms in the morning

Wait before you get the SIM. I might can work something out for you. You're the first person to mention getting APN settings back after they weren't available and the first to mention that you lose them after a reboot. Does your data and MMS still work after rebooting?
I'm going to contact some developer associates of mine and see if we can't use this information to come up with a working fix for it, if so, you won't need another SIM but if you'd rather not wait then go ahead get the SIM.
You have me curious to see if there is something useful that can be done like writing a script or something to run at startup to keep your issue from happening. Whether its a script or not there may still be a chance there could be a small breakthrough for this device when using these ROMs.

I am more than happy to wait I'm more interested in the process of getting this to work then I am updating my phone after a reboot and APN settings disappear I lose the ability to MMS but I still am able to use data.
If there is any information I can send you please let me know I am more than happy to send it
I am doing this with the CM 13 nightly build but I'm not up to date this current moment because that would require a reboot

In the meantime, if you want to use MMS you can use Hangouts or a third party texting app from the Playstore, there are several different ones, third party texting works fine, its the stock messenger in these ROMs that doesn't work without the APNs, third party doesn't need it.

Yes, but some of the third party apps don't require the other person to have it.
BTW, if you use the reply button under someones post(if you're using a browser) it will quote whoever you're replying to and they'll get a notification to let them know you replied.
Or if you're using an app to view this form, tap the persons post then tap reply and it will quote them.
This way they know you replied instead of having to purposely come look to see if you replied.
You can also give someone a mention if you want to get their attention by putting @ on the beginning of their name like this @stoneman1924, this also gives them a notification that you mentioned them so they'll know to come look. It makes it easier for everyone if you use the quote system and the mention system. I've quoted your post every time I replied, it gave you notifications that I had replied to you so you could check my reply didn't it?

Rooted H910 with drastically lower reception, trying to flash modem files from dump

Hello,
I've rooted a few phones, but I don't really do too much with them, I mostly root them to have an easier time transferring all data from one phone to the next, and for being able to use a couple of root apps. Basically, I'm not all that good at this stuff, but I can get by most of the time with enough research and time. I have not been able to find a thread that's been able to help me with this problem, though.
My V20's reception practically fell off the map after rooting it. I've been researching and trying to find a way to flash the modem files that I dumped with LGUP before I rooted it via dirtysanta, but I'm not having any luck. The files don't have an extension, but from what I can gather, they should be image files. I'm not 100% on that because I can't seem to find what file type they actually are, my computer only lists them with the description of "file". I run Windows 7 if that matters.
Anyway, based on what I've found so far, the files I need to flash in order to fix my reception problem are:
modem_COM5
modemst1_COM5
modemst2_COM5
fsg_COM5
I can't get fastboot to work, I'm not sure how to link my phone to a file path on my computer from command terminal so that's not been working for me. I've also tried renaming the files by adding ".img" to the end, zipping them and installing them with twrp afterward, but they won't install, giving me an error of "META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary"
Ultimately, I'm lost. Any help is greatly appreciated, as I've spent hours pouring over threads and trying to fix my stupid reception problems. I have no reception at home, none at work, and I have spotty reception while driving or out in other places, but it's generally terrible. I used to have low reception at home, but I could always make a call if I needed to, and I'd have great reception driving around. Then I rooted my phone and my reception tanked.

I appreciate you making the zip, but after flashing the files my phone won't boot up. When I power it on it says that my device has failed a routine safety check and will not boot. I'm accustomed to my phone saying that when I boot it up, as it's done that ever since rooting it, but then it shows the LG logo and then shuts off and will not turn on again unless I take the battery out and reinsert it. I have to go through that process at least 2 or 3 times to get the phone to load up. When I got it to load up again, the top bar of my phone said I had no service, which it did not before flashing the files. I've gone back into twrp and tried re-flashing it again to no avail.
If it makes a difference there were two sets of files when I went to flash, even though I only put in one set. I renamed them according to your instructions, and there were one set that just had the file name and .img at the end (like fsg.img) and another set that started with ._ and ends with .img (like ._fsg.img)
Thanks again for taking the time, I really appreciate the help.

I tested the zip myself it works as expected.
The unlocked bootloader message has nothing to do with your issue.
What sim card are you using?
What are your apn settings?
What was the last Rom you flashed?
Are you on Oreo?

It's a nano sim from at&t, and at&t is my carrier. I doubt it's relevant, but I use a prepaid plan.
My app settings are:
Name: ATT Nextgenphone
APN: nxtgenphone
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: None
APN type: default,mms,supl,hipri,fota
APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN roaming protocol: IPv4/IPv6
I believe the last ROM I flashed was H91510e_VTR_CA_OP_1205.kdz
Using the DirtySanta method of rooting, I think I flashed that so I could actually root the phone and then updated to another version, possibly. I'll include my software info in case that is helpful.
I'm not on oreo, I'm running nougat
Android version: 7.0
Android security patch level: November 1, 2017
Baseband version: MPSS.TH.2.0.1.c3-00011M8996FAAAANAZM-1.69323.1. 69645.2
Kernel version: 3.18.31
Build number: NRD90M

Security software version: MDF v2.0 Release 4
Thanks again for all of your help.

Maybe theirs a setting in the Hidden menu that will help
using a build.prop editor (thanks @ezzony)
Change ro.build.target_operator from ATT to OPEN to bring back all the missing Modem_Settings and the ones that were also missing in regular Settings>Mobile Networks. Also reverted to stock icons in status bar.
in the dialer type > *#546368#*910#
then go to Field Test>Modem Settings>Network Mode and set to Automatic
reboot
you can also check that Volte and VoWifi are enabled from the hidden menu Modem settings
Also in Settings>Mobile Network>Network Mode be sure it's set to the top one (GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto)

I downloaded a build.prop editor and changed the build target operator setting, but I'm not sure what you mean by reverting to stock icons in status bar or how to do that. Which settings were missing in Settings>Mobile Networks?
I got into that other menu, but under field test>modem settings I can choose either engineering mode or PDP setting.
Engineering mode says "modemprotocol" in the top corner, with previous, up, down, and next buttons. Under that it says ITEM_2G: 0
[Serving Cell Information]
ARFCN: 0
FL_Timeout_v: 0
RXLEV: 0
C1: 0
C2: 0
Other pages for engineering mode are for Item HSPA:0 [HSDPA Information], Item_NM [general information], Item_3G: 0 [RRC State and Serving Cell information], Item_LTE: 0 [LTE Information]
PDP settings says ModemProtocol at the top and has options for [0] Set LG Fast Dormancy, [1] APN setting, [2' Block DataRecovery.
VoLTE and VoWifi are enabled in the hidden menu, but I can't access Settings>Mobile Network>Network Mode. I can't figure out how to check the GSM and other options. I can go to Settings>Mobile Networks and then I can go to:
Mobile data - just turns it on or off
Mobile data reminder
Review reminder settings
International data roaming
Disable 2G
Access Point Names
Search for AT&T MicroCell - When I search, none are found
I hope I'm not just throwing too much useless information for you to sift through. I'm just not entirely sure of what all is relevant.

Alright, I've done this, I've also made a few different access point names for att to try and see if any of those have better reception. Nothing's working all that great, but hopefully at least one of them works a little better than what I've been used to.
Currently I still have no reception where I'm used to having one or two bars around the house. I'm not sure if there is anything else to do without opening up the phone and replacing any parts. If there is anything else you can think of that I might try, please let me know.
Do you think that changing the screen would make any difference on reception? I did have to have mine changed shortly after rooting the phone, but I can't really imagine that could be the cause since I still do get occasional reception.
Thanks again for all of your help.

I am having the same problem after following the root guide - no data. I'm on T-Mobile with an ATT phone running H91010r. I installed your modem.bat file with my dumped modem files using twrp, I changed the ATT buildprop to open, rebooted and made sure to select the first auto option. I tried dialing the secret menu number but it gives an error. Zero data. Everything else seems to be working phone. Data worked on stock phone before rooting. Please help!

it's most likely an APN problem
what do you mean the dialer code did not work ? it works on all H910
When I put in the dialer code and hit call I get "ussd code RUNNING" and then "connection problem or invalid mmi code"
I did get 4g working by reseting the Sim card, so I'm not panicking, but it seems slower than before. APN is off the t-mobile site.

are you sure you have a H910 ?
the dialer code depends on the Motherboard
*#546368#*910#
see the 910# at the end must match your phone
the Verizon LG V20 VS995 dialer code is disabled > worth reading
The unlocked LG V20 US995 would use dialer code *#546368#*995#
I'm not sure what works with the F800 version

I have the same problem on 800l entered the menu changing the model 996 at the end, as I understand it, without twrp how can I fix the problem?
