Hey guys
First let me say that I did try to look around the forums, but did not find anything relevant .. the search tool really isn't that great.
My parents, in all their wisdom, decided to go ahead and buy two "generic" android tablets whilst I was away at uni without asking for my advice.
Now had I known, I would have told them to stay the hell away from them, unfortunately I am now left with two annoying adults wanting me to make their tablets faster and better.
I am a pretty good programmer and am doing computer science at Uni, so I though i might try to root/flash a custom ROM onto those tablets myself (i know nobody else will ever do it). However I have never touched anything 'android dev' related (apart from obviously rooting and flashing my own HTC Desire) so I really have no idea about where to start.
This is where you lovely people come in: I would be oh so grateful if someone could put me in the right direction as to whatI should be looking into in order to root, and eventually flash a rom onto a new device that no other dev has ever touched before. I'm guessing that if people are doing it for mainstream devices, its entirely possible to do on the tablets I have, I just need to know where to start looking.

I do not know if this will help you or not, but I also am trying to flash a ROM for a "generic" android device. Given that mine is a phone and not a tablet, I do not know if this would work for you or not therefore I'd recommend doing prior research; however, I was able to root my device using the z4root app.
As far as I know, the next step would be installing a recovery (such as clockwork recovery in ROM Manager) in case something goes wrong. I'm not certain about how one would go about porting that software, but their are instructions posted on the developer's website. I don't know enough about the process so I can't really give anymore input; however, if you find any other information, be sure to let me know as well

I've got one problem with one of the tablets already .. it never came with a usb cable, and does not have a micro usb, min usb or anything that I may know as a port, it only has some kind of proprietary port that strangely looks like an iPod/iPhone/iPad port but I can't be sure as I do not own an ipodcable to try it out .. is it in any way possible that a generic tablet could have an apple connector on it?

I can just tell you from my experience using a Ciphone Pro (IP4 knock-off running android). It came with a cable that looks very similar to an iphone cable (my girlfriend and I cannot tell the difference between them). I can plug my phone into either my cable or her Iphone 3GS cable to charge; however, when she once plugged her phone into my cable, her Iphone said the charge was not compatible. Because the android phone didn't display any prompts when connected to the iphone adapter, I assume that these generic devices are compatible with it. I hope this helps, but you could also check all of the iphone cables you have lying around because maybe one of them actually came with the device

One thing that I've noticed is that there are quite a few "generics" out there that are actually rebadged versions of each other. If your tablets are one, then if you can find the line of tablets that they belong to, then you might be able to find a development community behind that line of tablets. If that's the case, then there might already be recoveries/roms available for you to flash onto these tablets. I'm not sure of a great resource but androidforums.net might help.

I would like to marry you Sir. Thanks to your advice I looked around, using the generic pads specifications, and ended up finding out that they were just "rebranded" flytouch epad. From there, I was able to find compatible ROMs for both tablets on http://www.slatedroid.com/ and http://techknow.freeforums.org.
I know have root, google apps and a nice speed increase on both of'em

Might I ask how you came to this conclusion? I'm trying to see if I can install custom ROMs on my phone and I believe that it is more than likely that there is a compatible version floating around somewhere. I'm not exactly sure what I should be searching for, so if you have any pointers it would be greatly appreciated

All I did was look at the specs of my device (ram, processor, screen size and internal memory being the big ones) and just tried to look for any other device with the same specs. It took a lot of googleing though, so be ready to search through useless search results for a while.

It looks as though the B70 Transformers are coming with locked boot loaders, is that the case?

Been a while since last post, but it appears ASUS’s counter move have finally come.
All signs point to that with the B70 revision of the Transformer, they have changed the Secure Boot Key.
At the same time they appear to have disabled downgrades in the more recent revisions of the firmware (the one B70 comes with!)
This means: At this point it’s not possible to root B70 revision ASUS Transformers. We will of course see what we can do to find a way around it, but keep in mind neither of us have access to a B70 revision model nor do we intend to spend the money needed to get one.
It was a good run, and congrats to all those with pre-B70 revision devices and bummer for everyone who bought newer revision devices hoping to root

I wonder if any new Asus software updates will also change the secure boot key and prevent other B revisions from being rooted once updated?

The secure boot key controls access to the tablet in NVFlash mode.
Without it basicallly you can't use NVFlash to update the Firmware on the tablet but it's possible that there might be other rooting methods that don't rely on NVFlash.
Instead these rely on exploiting bugs in the Android OS which can then be used to write data to areas of the tablet that shouldn't and so do things like install custom recovery modes that can then be used to load custom/insecure ROMs etc
(it's how the tablet was rooted before we gained access to the SBK)
I'm sure some bright spark will get it sorted anyways. These things don't remain unchallenged for long.
Now did we get the SBK last time? Someone had to have leaked it; I find it hard to believe it was brute-forced.
Ugh.... Why oh why are they doing this?? Don't they realize that one of their "pros" over Apple devices is becuase they lock them down so much - Why would they go and do that to their products now??? I thought I was finally moving towards freedom by getting away from Apple!!! <sigh>

the thing is wheather we like it or not ..they are their units and they will do what they want. Doesn't mean someone won't crack it like they always do. Just finding some that have been exchanged that have been rooted is enough to tick them off. Just reading here and finding out what s done with them is enough to tick them off. Look at what Motorola is doing. They made a statement that if you want to run a custom rom go somewhere else.
No they are OUR units and WE will do what WE want with them and if they do not like it then they can stick it where the sun does not shine.
There is no need for Asus to do this to the newcomers. It is just plain wrong.
Asus seems to go in the wrong way.

Do they really think that locking the bootloader will ATTRACT more customers?? If anything, it can only hurt sales...
I can't imagine that a whole lot of transformers get returned rooted - most people who are willing to root them know better than that (I would think)... I just don't get the reasoning behind it. How does it benefit them?

I was thinking of buying Transformer near future (1-2 weeks), but now Im starting to wonder, is there anyway to see which revision tablet is before purchasing? Maybe serial number will tell it somehow?
I dont wanna buy locked tablet...
I'm guessing its just to hinder people from returning or RMA'ing units for light bleeds or creeking

The serial number is located on the back of the pkg. You will be able to see it before you purchase it.
Is there anyway to safely tell if this is the case? I recently got a B70 and was able to root mine. I just wnat to make sure that I am not affected by this, and if I am want does that mean?

The serial will start with B70, so you will be able to tell. It's not like the B70 won't be cracked, anyways. There may be benefits to the later revision, as well.
As for Asus' thoughts on locking it down, they have a responsibility to shareholders to protect the IP(intellectual property) on the device. Buying a Transformer does not give you license to their IP. If shareholders feel they are not acting in accordance, they can basically sue Asus for shares/profit.
Personally, I wish the entire bootchain was open-source, but we knew it wasn't right from the beginning, so Asus is within it's rights.
Now, the good news. If we can buy enough stock in Asus, we can vote to open the IP base. If we reallllly buy alot, we might even win.
Once again, let me state, their decision sucks, but it's probably more for the shareholders than the company itself.

thought it was time I scrapped my chinese Tablet and bought something more powerful, bit of an impulse buy but it did not cost me too much as purchased from E***, 1 dead pixel but actually has 3, I am not too bothered at the moment, it did occur to me that I could probably get this repaired under warranty, cant be more than a year old, would Asus honor this, would I have to provide receipts, anyone know where I stand in regards to this, I really do like the tablet, it is responsive and screen looks good,internet is really quick, be good to know what other things this bad boy can do, what I would like to ask is what apps would you all recommend and if anyone has found a decent case and cover for both components. I wouldn't count on ASUS fixing it under warranty -- I don't know where you are based, but in the EU the onus is on the owner to prove manufacturer's fault in case of damage after the first 6 months after purchase. I don't know how easy that'd be. If they do not bother you to a significant extent, I probably would not send it in, even if only because because of the insane amount of ASUS charges for intake alone, by which is added the insane repair costs.
I really do like the tablet, it is responsive and screen looks good,internet is really quick, be good to know what other things this bad boy can do, what I would like to ask is what apps would you all recommend

Easy does it -- pnly step into customization once you're ready for it. A lot of owners are perfectly happy with the stock device. Once you go that route, however, you will not use stock ever again.

I tether to my (Android) SGS2 all the time, I don't know it this would be possible. If you read this in a timely fashion, run and hide before the onslaught of iHate. Hahaha! J/k -- we're generally nice people.

I doubt that the warranty would be covered, you would probably have to pay for a replacement screen.Also, have you tried restarting it and putting a fresh flash of the stock rom on it? I have had pixels go out but they turn back on after a reboot or two. Before ever considering flashing a custom rom make sure you read through the forums!!! Many here will help you . I am new to flashing and stuff as well and did a month research here before I attempted to flash any roms and I had no problems. I tether my iphone 3gs to my tablet but my iphone is jailbroken and I use PDANET so I can tether it through wifi and then it allows laptops and other devices without bluetooth to tether as well. I found the most helpful is reading threads about people who have bricked their devices. I am not happy their tf700 became bricked but by reading through you can find out why it was bricked and to know to never make their mistake.

Many thanks for the replies, really helpful, I have also noticed another problem with the tablet.
Power up problem.
hold down power button,it vibrates after a few seconds but nothing appears on the screen, if I attempt again, I have to hold it longer and then it vibrates again, this goes on for maybe 4-5 attempts before the thing boots, what is doing this,lol, so what i do now which is quite annoying, I just hold down the power button until the logo appears, maybe 1-2 minutes before it boots. tried a reset and a cold boot but still does it, any help would be great. have a great weekend everyone.

How are you shutting it down? I know sometimes when I would go to shut down, it wont shut down all the way and it requires me to force it off. However the vibration is an indicator of the tablet turning on/off. I never really had a problem with this as when I shut it down, if it dont vibrate like after 10 secs the screen goes off, I force shut it down, this is when it vibrates. Then I just hold the power button down and it boots up fine. Which is indicated by another vibration.

Make sure you don't accidentally hold down the volume-up button. That would enter APX mode, which does what you describe (and it enables a low-level USB recovery protocol).
Hi guys, I am afraid I bear bad news . In a recent email exchange I had with Asus support I asked about updates to the TF700. They said the following:
ASUS has not planned a release of a firmware update for the TF700 which will revert the OS to KitKat 4 Android.
Unfortunately we have also not been advised of a release date for new firmware releases for your model. Currently we are also awaiting extra information of our R&D department on the matter.

This seems to suggest we will not get KitKat 4.4 but we may get another firmware update. This would possibly still be based on 4.2.1 with just some bug fixes specific to the TF700 or it could possibly be based on 4.3. However they don't have a release date for this yet.
I know this won't be entirely unexpected news for some people but rather a confirmation of what many of us already feared would be the case. It is indeed a shame given the TF700 is really not that old.
Good to know, Asus won't be getting my money again any time soon, looking at the Samsung note 10.1 to replace this apparently old machine

1. Question: was this person a customer representative of ASUS UK (I got it from your profile location)? As far as I know, the R&D Department of ASUS is in Taiwan, and I highly doubt that ASUS UK has close communication with its Taiwan counterpart. Moreover, given my past experience, customer support usually doesn't have much technical knowledge to answer questions about stuff like OTA updates, bootloader unlocking, etc...
2. Comment: The way the quoted email was written is really weird. What is meant by "revert the OS to KitKat 4 Android"? "Revert to" means returning to a former state, which doesn't make sense when you talk about a future update. And what is "KitKat 4 Android"? I am sure that is not the way most people refer to Android 4.4 KitKat. And lastly, "awaiting extra information OF our R&D department" sounds odd, shouldn't it be "awaiting extra information FROM our R&D department"?
Personally, whenever I receive emails with such mistakes, I instantly question the sender's professionalism and credibility.

The initial email was sent using the form on the Asus UK support page, although I do not think the representative who responded was necessarily based in the UK. They had an Asian name and judging from the way the email was written, I think that English is probably not their first language. The reply email was not UK specific either ([email protected]). The guy could actually have been based in Taiwan for all I know.
I think this guy is probably quite reliable as he seemed fairly knowledgeable when dealing with my other queries / complaints but yes he is just a customer support rep so there is a possibility of what he said not being 100% accurate. Still, I think it is the closest to an official word on the matter that we have had so far and seems pretty plausible.
Best way to get any respect on tablet updates is to Go Nexus.
I'm just waiting for the Nexus 10 2. Which will probably release in days if not a couple months at longest.
There are plenty of 3rd party keyboards and cases for 10” tablets, such as the Nexus 10. Which make them function and even look just like our TF700T.
I used to think of the Transformer line as unique. But if you look around. You'll find there's really nothing so special to the Transformer line. Now that 3rd parties have given other tablets, especially Nexus tablets. Every feature that seemed special about the Transformer line.

MicroSD slot? Battery in keyboard dock? USB port?
I gave up on waiting on updates to 4.3 or KK - this last week I finally bit the bullet and flashed CROMI-x. Painful process in that it took days to be successful in unlocking the bootloader - literally took dozens of tries before the tool finally worked. After that, all else was straightforward. I wasn't having any particular performance issues; rather, I got fed up with the random reboots that seem to occur at least once/day. Hopefully, that will improve with CROMI-x.

USB On the Go allows for storage expansion and addresses USB. And the fact the MicroSD storage is not utilized like in the pre-Android 4.0 days, means the MicroSD storage is not well leveraged when running stock. Far as charging, if this works with the Nexus 10 2, that would put Asus behind on that one.
I'm talking keyboards, but if such things interest you like MicroSD and a battery in the dock. You may continue with it and all the issues built into the TF700T. For me, I'm going to take the Nexus 10 2 off ramp.
Edit: I want to add, _that you have helped make the TF700T a better device and I do thank you for your efforts. Even running your kernel now .

I was not having performance issues early on. But the more I used it and the more I added, I found it slowing up big time. While my loaded up phone was having no issues at all. This is when I realized the talk about the slow storage on the TF700T is a big problem. That's when I moved to CROMI-x. It is better than stock, but the storage issue can only best be overcome by using ROM2SD with CROMI-x. (You need a very fast MicroSD.) That does help the most, but still, it's all patches around a big issue. And a tablet that has things right to begin with would run better.

I've had mine over a year and never ran into any real performance problems. While never as snappy as my 2012 & 2013 Nexus 7's or Galaxy S3, it was much better than my Xoom - I didn't see the severe issues that others have. But the random reboots (most occurred when just "idling", not during app use) were just maddening and made the tablet undependable in my mind. I haven't noticed any performance differences with CROMI-x yet but I'm really hoping that it is now more stable.
Tell me I'm wrong...isn't the Nexus made by Asus? Or am I thinking that just cause I'm old and senile?

The 7 inch Nexus are made by Asus and the 10 inch was made by Samsung.
I tried messaging Gary but I did not have high hopes as the account is dead for so long.
Does anyone know a new contact? Maybe they could say something more reliable about update policy regarding the TF700...

And a hinge. Mine stays docked almost all the time. I get clamshell protection and a handy portable package. Once you start trying to replicate the other features using accessories with other tabs, you get a bulky mess of stuff that you couldn't pay me to carry around.
Not that I'm exactly loving Asus these days, but the transformer certainly was special when I got it.

I totally agree with you. That is the main reason why I still hold on to the TF700 and not get the new Padfone Infinity ( the new Padfone has a Snapdragon 800, 1080p screen, fast internal storage, microSD support with performance that obliterates almost everything else). The only thing holding me back is the keyboard dock, without which the tablet experience is simply incomplete (in my opinion of course). If ASUS manages to bring the dock to the next Padfone and achieve decent size and weight, I will gladly make ASUS my go-to brand for all computing needs.

So... Anyone else shopping around for an upgrade this holiday season? I was looking at the tf701, but If it's going to have the same lack of development (I truly appreciate the hard work our few, but amazing, devs have put in), then I'd rather go for one of the new waterproof xperias or a galaxy tab. Haven't really looked into the various options yet.. I was excited when we got cm, and especially a pac-rom port, but every time I gave them a try, they just seemed a bit off. Like they were unfinished and obviously made for a phone. Maybe cromi just spoiled me. :shrug:
This tablet has been good to me, though. I got a micro-hdmi to hdmi cable, so maybe I'll use it as a media hub or something... If the native Linux on our device had more development behind it, and was just a tad more stable and compatible, I wouldn't really be looking into a replacement. Definitely not planning on getting rid of it. If I can find the time maybe I'll use it to delve deeper into learning how to develop myself.

I can't imagine a vendor ever matching the features and capabilities the ROM development community adds. I like that Asus offers a way to unlock the bootloader. Samsung would rather that you don't. In the year I've had this, there have been multiple firmware releases. For a minute, cromi was changing every other day. There is a new device they have to sell now. I'm happy. 5.2.2, btw is amazing! well I was hoping for Kit Kat too... seeing as its optimized for lower RAM devices I was thinking it would really help out stock. Its definitely time to flash now. My only question is if anyone knows if they're working on a Kit Kat version of CROMi???
I am hoping that is the right place to post this thread.
Two weeks ago I have bought an Aspera RT3 tablet to run Yamaha diagnostic applications. Unfortunately one of them will not run on a Android version 4.2 or less. The version installed on my tablet is 4.1.2 .
I have tried to update it but without any success and the manufacturer apparently doesn't have newer version of ROM for it. All I know is the RT3 runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 (MSM8625Q) chipset.
As it is, the tablet is completely useless to me so I would be very grateful if someone could find a solution to my problem. I am happy to pay for the service of course.

Ever get anywhere on this? We have some aspera devices that I would like to root also... Tempting to just grab SuperSU and flash in recovery but not sure what end results would be...

Not a bit. I still have the tablet but can not use it. The manufacturer sys that they "looking for a solution" but it looks more and more like a dead end. I would be very grateful if someone could still help with this.

Wow, you actually had contact from Aspera? Well done. They have been pretty ****ty for me to be honest. We have an ongoing software problem, I have sent them a huge load of logcats etc, they have not done a single thing to help and now just seem to screen my emails to them. Really surprising that a small company can survive without offering decent support. Thought that was how the pipped the big guys, by providing individual customer service to their small user base.
I am trying to get a refund on the devices as I am sicking of the issues we are having and without their help they will continue to occur.
