Custom ringtones take too long to ring...

I've been trying out the Photo Caller ID with custom ringtone programs, namely Inesoft Address Book and Photo Contacts Pro.
Both work fairly well as long as the custom ringtone I set is in the ROM (I'm using a HTC universal btw). But whenever I choose to run the custom ringtone off the SD Card, I've tested that it takes more than 10 SECONDS for the ringtone to start ringing, i.e. the person calling you will be waiting for 10secs before you even hear your phone ringing!!!
Photo Contacts Pro documentation say this is because of the slow "wake up" time for memory cards. Is there anyway to work around this? Cause a 10+ secs delay for the ringtone is unbearable!!!

How long is your ringtone?
I have mine (Wizard) loading ringtones on the SD card, and I notice only around 1 sec lag time.
Maybe, you want to cut down your ringtone length and try. I have all my ringtone music around 30 sec each.

I've noticed this too, and don't have any third party call applications, it's especially longer when the file is MP3 rather than MID or WMA... :-/

What programs do you use to manage your custom ringtone?
My ringtones are also 30sec, MP3, 96kbps, 32kHz.

I put all MP3 ringtone in "My Document" folder in the SD, and I assigned tones from Pocket Informant.
Well...no fancy caller picture, but fit what I need.

Download Tweaks2k2 you can get a free trial, sorted out my delay, there's actually an option to disable the 3second delay!!!

Treo 750 ring repeat delay

So I have just purchased an unlocked 750 and love it, but the rings are...interesting. I have scoured here, Google and xda-dev but searches brought up nada....so, here it goes. The stock ringtones as well as the .mp3 files I loaded seem to have like a 3-4 second gap between when they play...i.e. if there is a call coming it, the phone will play the sound for 1 second (or however long it might be) and then wait 3-4 seconds before playing it again. This doesn't seem to be an issue with my friends' 650 or 700w/wx. This is really fairly annoying as it tends to make me miss calls...
I have a Cingular branded phone running WM5, if that means anything.

You don't say whether your Treo is running WM5 or WM6 - which may or may not have an effect on this suggestion.....in either case, you'll need a registry editor installed to make the changes (try PHMRegedit from HERE).
Here's the information ("borrowed" from the XDA Wiki ) you need:
Change ringtone/vibrate/LED flash characteristics
If you would like more control over how your device rings/vibrates/flashes its LEDs on events, you can can change the Script values of these events. For example, for an incoming call performing 'activate device, play ringtone, wait 3 seconds, repeat':
HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0\Script = "apw3r" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)
For performing 'active device, set volume to 33%, play ringtone, set volume to 67%, play ringtone, set volume to 100%, play ringtone (no repeat)':
HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0\Script = "ac33pc67pc100p" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)
To have the device 'Vibrate and Ring' simultaneously:
HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0\Script = "av0pw3r" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)
The following are the full codes available to you. Please note that all the codes are executed simultaneously except after a ringtone play / wait code. E.g. 'v1p' will vibrate and play at the same time, while vibrating for 1 second. But 'pv1' will play the ringtone through all the way first, then start vibrating for 1 second.
a = activate device
cN = set volume to N in percentage max volume
fN = flash notification LED for N seconds
p = play ringtone. Note that this will play the ringtone all the way through before continuing with the next code.
r = repeat. Note that this should be the last code in your Script string, if used at all.

Hopefully, you can make sense of all that - I'm guessing from what you said in your post, your device currently has the "w3" value to make it wait for 3 seconds?

Slow Ringer Response

Anyone have Slow Ringer Response problems? It takes 2-3s before a call registers and the phone rings.

Vibrate before ring?
I was missing a lot of calls with like you say a 2-3 second delay before I heard any ringer, then i realized I had phone set to "vibrate BEFORE ring" rather than "vibrate AND ring"
Could it be that?

Well, maybe a second or two at max, but yes there is a delay.
What you can do, depending on your provider, is go into the phone settings, and call forwarding, and adjust the delay before it forwards unanswered calls to voicemail to 30 seconds.
I've made this change on my wife's phone as she always takes 29.9 seconds to find the phone in her handbag!

BadTasteUK beat me to it. This will not solve you delay issue, but should allow you sufficient time to answer the call.

i have a regular Phone anf it Allway rings a few seconds B4 the Polaris.

i remember having the same problem with previous htcs. maybe someone has found a way to resolve this. i ll search in the fora for previous models. hopefully we ll find somthing.

I have dozens of 'missed calls' that don't ring, due to delay

I think it is connected in two ways:
1) Getting from standby mode is slow, takes a while to start again some services
2) Loading mp3s or wav files(ringtone) takes a small amount of time
Solution:
Find a way to cache sounds and/or have certain call services running all the time(which would drain battery faster)

This is an inherent windows mobile problem, and has been around for ages...

With little effort it could be done.

I have found that I always get a delay of one ring before my HTC starts to ring. but it is worse if I use an mp3 rather than a mid or even wma. I also found that if I cut down the mp3's size to around 30 secs then it loads quicker

Try this solution :
Go to "HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0\Script" in registry
normaly, you have this : apw3r
Replace by : apr
Explication :
A = Activation (??? i'm dont know)
W3 = Wait 3s
R = Ring
You can add "v3" if you want vibrate 3s !

3 second delay
There is a software program called "tweaks 2k2.net". Under the heading of Phone tweaks there is an option to disable the 3 second ringtone delay (it works fine for me). So I think the delay has been put there for a purpose. The only downside is that you have to purchase the software. Hope this helps.

3 second ringtone delay is set and unset in the control panel already
my machine uses sktools, and under "option to disable the 3 second ringtone delay" it was already disabled but still slow.

Ring Tones - frustration. Help / advice please

I've had several previous generations of HTC devices, and never really got to grips with Ring Tones / Vibration / Ring Volume. I had high hopes that WM6 would have sorted the mess out by now (my last PDA was WM2003).
What I really want from the phone part of my PDA is to be able to consistently and simply do the following (based on an O2 Orbit 2, UK)
1) Choose my ring Tone (ideally starting a little quietly and then rising in volume)
2) Set the ring Tone to Ring & Vibrate.
3) when in meetings / cinema / church etc. quickly set just to vibrate
4) after the meeting quickly set back to Ring & Vibrate
(Personally I have no use for zero ring volume combined with vibration off.)
5) as a final customisation, I'd like to be able to set different ringtones for different calling numbers.
This is what I've done so far:
First I used the O2 "sounds & notifications" profile on the home screen.
This integrates nicely with the volume slider button on the LHS of the orbit - BUT it appears to have a few problems:
a) you can't choose custom ringtones
b) you can't have a rising ring tone with vibrate
I created a custom rising ringtone by editing a small MP3 so that it starts quietly and rises in volume over about 25 seconds. Placed this in "My Ringtones" directory in "My Documents". Then had to read the phone handbook (always a last resort) to see how to set this mp3 as my ringtone. The answer is that the "my ringtones" tones are not selectable under "sounds & notifications", instead you have to open up the phone dialer app, select menu, options, then you can select your custom ringtone.
Unfortunately, every time you subsequently use "sounds and notifications" to select, for example, the "meeting" profile, or the "silent profile", you lose the custom ringtones - so you can't simply put the phone on vibrate, and then back to normal without then having to go back to the phone dialer, menu options etc.
surely there must be a simple way around this? every non PDA phone I've ever used has this sort of thing down as a straightforward essential tool.
Hopefully someone out there can either show me the obvious step that I'm missing, or point me in the directions of some 3rd party (preferably free) software that manages this task.

1. The ringtones can be in the windows, windows/Rings, My documents (not subfolder), storage card (root).
2. On the phone settings tab, there is an option to set it to 'Vibrate and Ring'.
3. You can use the HTC Home screen (free, and included in original Polaris, but can be found here) or some other 3rd party app like SPB Phone Suite (not free).
4. Same, or setting up "busy" events in the calendar, and setting the HTC Home screen for atomatic.
5. Check your options on the contact details page.
For the increasing ringtone, there isn't a better workaround then what you did.

I had exactly the same problem; this is my first non-Nokia, and I've always loved the quick access to "profiles".
From a recommendation on here, I now use pocketzenphone, which is fantastic.
I've got a row of five icons under the HTC home, to change profile. Each profile can change so many things, I don't use 20% of it! I just change ringtones and volumes.
It's free to try, and I think £10 or so to buy if you like it.

Adding a new alarm to HTC Touch Pro

Hi guys,
Just been having an incredible number of problems trying to add an alarm ring tone to my alarm clock? The default alarms are too low in volume and too short in duration to be of any use in waking me up in the mornings. I've tried and incredible number of ways to add some tones into the alarm but haven't be able to. Since changing phones, the alarm just hasn't been enough to wake me up!
In my event notification section, there is no way of altering the alarm. There is no drop-down menu option for alarms or ringtones. The following options are available:
Phone: Incoming call
Active Sync: Begin sync
Active Sync: End sync
Beam: Autoreceive
Connection disconnected
Connection established
IM: new instant message
IM: Nudge
Messaging: Downloading MMS/MMS downloaded/MMS sent/ new email message/new mms/new mms report/new text message/sending mms
Phone: Missed call
Phone Voice mail
Quick GPS
Reminders
Wireless network detected
Then, there is one option that has 5 squares present - I think the phone cannot read the symbols, but I tried it and it doesn't work either.
I tried the following steps also, which my friend suggested:
"Copy whatever mp3 file(s) you wish to use as ringtones or alarm tones into a new folder on the memory card. Then, using the phone's File Explorer, copy those files into the Windows folder (that you'll find in the Phone Memory), and also into the Ringtones or Rings folder, and lastly, into My Documents/My Ringtones (I think that's the folder's name - if not, then it's very similar). Then go to the Events and Notifications section of your phone's setup, that is, the section where you change your ringtones. There, you'll find a section that has a dropdown menu that shows each individual event, along with another dropdown menu showing the available mp3 and wav files. You can then change the event notification (alarm tone/ringtone) to whatever you want."
Some help would be GREATLY appreciated - I'd be very grateful for the member who can get me waking up on time again in the morning!

g-alarm
the default alarm options for WM aren't great; my old samsung cellphone had better options and settings for alarms. i highly recommend using a separate application like g-alarm that has lots of interesting options: http://www.ageye.de/index.php?s=galarm/about

Yeah g-alarm is by far much better, BUT just in case you were wondering. How you change the sound is to go to settings / clocks & alarms/ then for each individual alarm click on the little bell. There should be a drop down box there, although I'm not sure if mp3's are supported or not out of the box.

i dont think mp3s are supported. thats basically the main reason i installed g-alarm. great program, but way too easy to flip over to snooze (yes, it's accelerometer enabled so you can flip your phone over to snooze or do a maze to turn off the alarm)
