I switched from a droid incredible that pretty much neglected the internal memory and favored the external memory.
Now the opposite is how the gs3 works not sure if it is a samsung method vs htc method or if htc newer phones do it that way too.
I guess i should sum my problem up.
I have ring tones and mp3s i want to show up in the menu with any other ringtones. And i know all that is wrong is i dont know the proper directory structure or it is not setup to check directory structure on the sd card.
From how i can tell it does use the same structure but just does not check the external card.
The way it seems to be setup
is
root/storage/sdcard0 (internal)
root/storage/sdcard1 (external)
In sdcard0 (this works)
media/ringtones
in sdcard1 (this does not)
media/audio/ringtones
media/ringtones
Is it possible to switch which folder is looked at like can i switch the internal and external sdcard?
making it
root/storage/sdcard0 (external)
root/storage/sdcard1 (internal)
This is how I have my custom sounds set up:
For ringtones:
/storage/sdcard0/Ringtones
and
/storage/extSdCard/Ringtones
For alarms
/storage/sdcard0/Alarms
and
/storage/extSdCard/Alarms
etc...
Seems to automatically read just fine from both internal and external sd. I've never tried using the media directory for anything (facebook stuck a notification sound in there but that's about it).

I tried to push couple of mp3's to /system/media/audio/ringtone and /system/media/audio/alarm, but they won't show up in the setup list. Do I have to have a SD card so that I can make my own ringtones to work only when place the files on the SD card?
I just transferred my ringtones folder from external SD card to internal storage. The phone sees it no problem.

Assuming you have root did you or has your phone rescanned media since adding the files?..
You can put them on your sdcard at media/audio/ringtones, media/audio/alarms, ect. Or put them on the internal storage at system/media/audio/ringtones, ect. Mine worked fine from either place. After putting them on the internal storage I did have to reboot to get them to show up in the selection list though.

Originally I left them and my notification tones on /sdcard/_ExternalSD (transferred it from another phone) but they wouldn't always play so I moved them to /sdcard and now they're all available and play when they're supposed to. I didn't have to reboot for that move but you may have to if you move them to /system.
You can always use Rings Extended from the market. It allows you to set any file stored on your sd card or phones memory
thank you, guys. it seems the reboot is the key to make the ringtone to show, if I put them under system folder.
I can't find a solution anywhere for this problem, nothing I makes apps or data move to my sd card.
Is anyone (are you even able to) install apps or save data to the external sd card on the Atrix? It seems like most systems are set up with /mnt/sdcard as the external, so I cant get any app2sd programs to work, they stay on my phone.
I'm rooted.
I have the setting in applications to install on the external, I also made the default storage external, but everything still saves on my phone.
I even formatted my sd card into Fat and ext2 (and swap), all primary.
I searched and everyone says the same thing, and it keeps saving on my phone.
Do i need to somehow change it so my external is mnt/sdcard?

I have always used micro SD cards to help store all my music and pictures and such, however earlier today after copying some music over, my files weren't being read by my music program Zplayer. I assumed maybe it just read wrong, so I unmounted it and then mounted it again. After this however, it still was not being read so I cleared my app data and restarted my phone. After again not reading my files, I put my SD back into my computer to check and realized that my Music and Photos folder were missing. :crying:
After looking around a little, I realized all files on my SD card disappeared but my LOST.DIR filled with unreadable files. I have used this same 32 GB SD card before so I do not understand why this is happening. Now after reformatting my SD card using my phone AND computer, when I put only one album on it worked perfect. I tried adding a few more after that, and it worked as well. I assumed it was back to normal so I added all the rest I had on my itunes library and then put it into my phone.
After the previous two successes I was disappointed to see that my phone stopped reading my music files again. I used ES File Explorer and saw that my music folder WITH the music files were still intact and in their correct directories. I tried to play a song using the built in ES player, and it played perfectly, so I tried just unmounted and mounting again, thinking it might fix it.
Again still nothing was read and I looked at my file directories and a message popped up saying something around "sd/ext_sd/Music was not found" and discovered once again that my files were missing and my LOST.DIR folder had again been filled.
I am at a lost now as I can not figure this out and I am scared that any information I put on my card will be ruined. No messages pop up warning me my card is corrupted, my files just disappear after being put in my phone for some reason.
TL;DR Whenever I add files to my SD card and put it in my phone I can see the files but they are not read. After unmounting and mounting them again all the files keep moving to the LOST.DIR folder even after reformatting.

SD Card broken?
Maybe the SD card you are using is broken. Is it old? Can you try with another SD card?
This issue happened to me on my PSP memstick which i figure out that it was unmounting issue from the PC, I simply unplugged the usb without safe removal which really shocked me

The weird thing is that I bought this SD card about a week or two ago. I use another SD card for another device and I have not had any problems. My current one just started corrupting everything after I added more files last night. Also I do not use the USB cable, I unmount the card from my phone then use a SD card reader to copy files, not showing any issues!
Try The corrupted SD card on another phone if you can. Yet it highly possible that it is a bad SD card (damaged during the shipping or whatever)

Hi
I don't know if this is an issue with the handset, Lollipop or what, but I had a hell of a struggle assigning custom ringtones to a friend's contacts. It didn't matter where the contact was stored (handset or google account), only the default ringtone would play regardless of what had been chosen.
Having seen issues where Android doesn't like (perhaps understandable) the external SD card for storage, such as Apps, I assumed this might be a problem, so moved all the mp3s to the internal storage...still the same problem.
Removed the external SD card and everything worked fine...RESULT!
Since the card had previously been used in a BlackBerry I then assumed that there was a problem either with the format or even that perhaps the mp3s were in a directory that I could not determine. After recovering all the data, the card was reinserted and reformatted through the "Storage" option in "Settings". I did assume that everything should work no that the SD card had been reformatted correctly...nope!
It seems that the ringtones will only work if the SD card is removed, regardless of the fact that the ringtones are on the internal memory and the SD card has just been formatted by the phone and contains nothing other than the file/directory structure that Lollipop created itself.
I thought this strange and wondered if anyone could shed some light on why. I only ask because without the SD card, the phone is a little tight on memory.
I did trawl the site and net for such answers, but only found people telling me that it can be done. Me, I have a Moto G (1st Gen), love it and have no need for contact specific ringtones...I'd only assume someone else's phone was ringing, lol.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
I can't seem to find this exact problem anywhere, so forgive me if its been posted somewhere already.
I used MoDaCo's method to enable adoptable storage quite some time ago. I partitioned my
SD card into 2 volumes and kept one as an external SD card and one for the adoptable storage.
Initially, when I would plug my phone into my Windows pc, it would recognize both an internal and external card. Now, it does not. I *think* the change may have happened around the same time I upgraded to nougat.
Currently the phone seems to recognize both partitions - in fact the camera defaults to putting new photos on the external partition. When I go to Settings> Device Maintenance > Storage it lists :
53.5GB / 64 GB for the internal and an "SD Card" with 12.6GB / 23.4 GB.
ES File Explorer lists:
Internal Storage - 19/34 GB
External Storage - 12/23 GB
However, when I plug it into my PC, it shows my device, i double click on my device and it shows 2 hard drives, both with the same size. And if you click on either, you access the exact same files - which are internal files.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this? I would really appreciate the help.
Thanks!
I have attached a couple of screenshots from the PC and the phone in case it helps clear up my less than clear explanation. Thanks again.
Since it looks like this is some odd twist of fate that has bitten me in the ass - I have a followup question. If I turn off my phone, remove the flash drive, and put it into a PC machine will everything be ok or will I wind up crying myself to sleep at night? In other words, since there are 2 partitions (the encrypted, adoptable storage one and the normal external sd card one), windows should ignore the encrypted and just see the external SD one right? If I do this, windows isn't going to freak at the encryption and jack something up is it? I would rather not have to reinstall all the apps I have on the card.
Thanks again in advance.
