[Q] Swtich to T-Mobile or ATT - General Questions and Answers

So here is my situation...right now i have a galaxy nexus on sprint and i renewed in May so i'm stuck with them until may 2014 however i'm tired of their data "speeds" and i might so screw it and make the expensive switch lol. i love the phone but getting only 0.01 MB at my house is unexpectable and not being able to use my "unlimitied" data either is just a waste of money for see that i pay every month...so anyways i'm deciding on what to do. should i go to ATT or T-moblie. I looked at T-Mobile's plans and they are better than ATT IMO but i need to know where my nexus phone would work best at. If anyone lives in southern california area and more like riverside, pomona, corona, chino cities can you let me know please? thanks for the help in advance

Ran across quite a few reviews on google claiming it works great on tmo in southern cali. However the speeds people get seem to differ quite a bit

T mobile has a reputation of bad coverage, but you researched and found good results so I wouldn't worry. However they still do not have LTE like AT&T does.
You can't use your sprint nexus on tmo or att so you would probably get a new phone, and at&t has a beast selection of devices right now.

WHY does my INFUSE work 10x better on TMobile network than ATT?

Need to vent here. Have ATT / Infuse unlimited data plan, etc.
My signal sucks and i live in city center los angeles
i have to use a hacked up microcell in order to get that to give me ok boost but still not what it should. In my house, without microcell I get ZERO bars..
Unlocked my device a few days ago (easy thank you forums for one click)
picked up a $10 PAY AS YOU GO sim card at TMOBILE.
Reset Factory / WITH Tmobile number SIM card inside and lord or lord...
FACTS:
--- FIVE BARS EVERYWHERE AND ANYWHERE! NOT ONE SIMPLE HICCUP OF SERVICE.
--- DATA speeds on TM registered as EDGE though I am going tell all truly, its not. IT IS 4G + more. I have been testing and getting D/L speeds (w/WiFi off) of 15-18MBPS
Mind you, this is consistently when phone is on TM
--- More FUN....market instantly downloaded TM stock apps (obviously thinking its their phone) though there is a problem here. TMOBILE grants my phone FULL TELENET GPS SOFTWARE 24/7. --- ATT charges $10.00 a month for their crappy version.
---- More FUN x2 - TM grants me a full FREE unlimited use of QIK video chatting. No software restrictions. AT&T charges you I believe $5.00 a month to have the extras, on a network that it really doesn't work half the time.
How good is the VIDEO chatting & Mess? ITS AWESOME, ITS FAST & ITS QUICK no waiting no hiccups, etc. etc.
When I transfer ATT SIM back in the video chatting software remains full unlocked though its nearly useable.
I now have to come to believe that ATT is truly the problem. the phone explosed with power + fun on a network that can handle the infuse + or allow it to be run as a killer phone.
As long as ATT remains on delivery its wireless customers the worst mobile service ever, sadly most infuse users will never get to see the push & power that really is inside the INFUSE.
while att makes more money than ever, continues with the mega-mergers back and forth over and over - passing the billl 9 rate increases on to its customers.
THIS HONESTLY IS INEXCUSABLE. ---
though on a good note...the phone rocks on TM just for reference.
No issues here.
Running off MIUI Rom
Uhhh correct me if im wrong here, but AT&T does not charge for the use of QIK does it?
Sorry, this is bull. I worked for Tmobile for a long time and i'm familiar with an HSPA+ network, and in order to even get near those speeds on an HSPA+ 21 device you'd have to have the utmost prefect network conditions on their
AWS band.
AT&T has no AWS band. Also, you'd be hard pressed to find even an HSPA+ 42 device on Tmobile that would get those speeds. A device seldom gets near the theoretical max unless you're in a testing zone with no congestion from other users and no issues with interference, signal propagation, etc...
You'd only see those speeds on WiFi with the Infuse, unlocked on Tmobile's network, else EDGE speeds would be around 50kbps or less.
If you want to prove it, take a speed test with the Ookla app and post the screen shot here.

att doesnt pass bill rate increases unless the customer upgrades plans. you are entitled to the contract you siged with the old provider and in many cases you can renew it seemingly indefinately. i know people with basic phones that still pay cell one bills.
also you must live in a very good city for t-mobile. att rules in my area though mos people are brainwashed into having verizon plans. we got h+ here and i get 10-11 mbps down. verizon is lucky to get 1mbps and often falls back to a 1g symbol on some phones.
as for t-mobile, in my area it is very spotty. sounds like you found happyness with them and so do many others, more power to you guys, if t-mo was viable for me i'd switch but it's not. though the h+ on t-mo with the infuse sounds sketchy and the speeds are the only posible utmost perfect scenario.
i believe .15-.18 MBPS but 15-18 naw.
just look at the screen name. tells the whole story.

Do this. Load a custom ROM and change wireless settings to 2G networks. You will have 5 bars wherever you are, even on AT&T.
Curious about this myself, I pulled out my old T-mo prepaid sim I keep as a backup for when my contract is up, fired it up, and tried using some data. I got EDGE speeds in a H+ area with T-Mo. T-Mo has faster EDGE than AT&T but certainly not the speeds you're claiming. Not saying what you said was BS but it is either location dependent or my Infuse just sucks. Then again, I get about 8mbps down 2 up on AT&T where I live...

(at the time i had regular 3g (samsung captivate) and my speed test would often beat the top speeds of the tmboile devices instore.
The OP's name is bogustbaxter, obviously just someone trying to get attention. Good job. I don't think tmo allows unlimited video chatting, they have data limits like anyone else, it's not possible to get those speeds, etc. This is dumb. It should be closed

Amen to that!! I have been with ATT since 2004..i am testing different modems as we speak. I wonder does anyone know is there a way to know what modem is best for a certain area?? I searched and searched ATT and NEVER get anywhere. I don't even know and can't seem to find out what typical speeds should be for me. I live in Northern CA. about 8 miles from town...there is actually an ATT store here that offers NO help. If the weather is right, wind, clouds, and if i stand on one foot and spin MAYBE i get like on average 1.60mbps down. the highest i have ever gotten is 4.00 ...thought it was a fluke. I am on my 4th modem to test. UCKj1 seems to be better FOR me than KK1 (aweful), Ki3 (ok), and Ki4 (not so much).

The real problem is, what carrier has good service and support? Have friends on all major carriers and they all stink. The best one of the bunch is Sprint who has crap coverage and 3g only around my area. Best thing about then is the 10 bucks a month they tack on for having a 4g phone that does not get 4g, what a joke! I see lots of ATT slamage but I don't see what make the others any better. Ok they have the slowest feauxG of all but that is LOTS better than charging more for nothing.

Verizon, att, or sprint can't decide!?

Right now I have Verizon and can upgrade next month but my contract ends in december if I upgrade with Verizon I'll loose my unlimited I was thinking about going to att cause I'd get an extra gig for the same price then was thinking about sprint cause they have the cheapest plan and unlimited but no 4g I either want to get the HTC evo lte/htc one x or the S3. So I guess I'm wondering if I should break my contract and get another gig with att, go with sprint for unlimited but only 3g for who knows how long or should I just stick with Verizon?

Att is good but expensive bad covrage in buildings. Varizon is kind of limited have good signal inside building 850 band is great. Sprint and t-mo cheaper but weak signal data slow. In my area t-mo is using atts towers. Sprint is cheap... but you ge alot of CAN You hear me nowwwww. JM2C.

I really, really hate VZ. Been with T-Mobile for 14 years and very happy. Good service and best prices. Very good coverage in my area.
Speaking of coverage... Coverage with any carrier is EXTREMELY location-dependent. Coverage maps can only give approximate coverage areas. Signal strength within a coverage area can come and go from mile to mile, block to block or even room to room.
People are constantly asking about coverage but trying to give meaningful advice about expected coverage is just worthless. It is. The only thing that really works is first, check a map to get a rough idea what to expect. Pick a provider that shows good coverage in the area then actually try their service in places you expect to use it. Walk around the house, work, etc and see if it drops calls or loses data connection.
It's the only way to be fairly sure you'll be happy with any provider's signal quality.

Yea I'm starting to hate Verizon as well with the shared data andno option for the individual plans anymore unless your grandfathered in like me but that will probably change next year like there doing with the unlimited plans. Both att and Verizon have about the same coverage in my area. Sprint has cover mostly in my area but some dead zones. And tmoblie only has voice in my area so that's out of the question. I'm thinking I'll stick with Verizon even though I really don't want to... was also thinking about a prepay smartphone but none in my area has good enough coverage.

But being that Verizon is CDMA, phones sell much cheaper here and on eBay. You could get decent phone for $300ish, not use your upgrade, and keep unlimited. Just a thought.

Locked bootloaders prevent custom images/roms from being loaded on the device. A good example of that is the now ancient DROID X on VZW there was a huge fuss about their being a chip that would destroy the phone and ish, but I digress, it essentially makes it so you can only load VZW Official or VZW based roms. No AOKP, No CM- anything etc.
If you're not into that, it's not a big deal. But I, as a flashaholic must have unlocked bootloaders.
Now carrier wise, Tmo is better because if you exceed data they just slow you down.
Att (mine) charges $10/GB over 3GB so 2GB over costs you the same as the 5GB plan essentially.
Sprint... Well do you want people to hear you?
But as it was said before, coverage is the deal breaker. But Tmo is also adding brought spectrum from VZW, which should prove interesting since the Tmo/Att merger got the kaibosh

I just upgraded with Verizon which forced me to change to a shared plan from unlimited. I was bummed about this, but Verizon has been amazing to me.
Here's how I justified it. Largest network/Best service. I had unlimted data...I rarely use more than 100 - 500mb as I have Wifi at home and at work/school. So it wasn't really a loss. Check out your data use...do you really use that much data? (You could, I'm just sharing my experience)
I use around 1.8-2.5G a month and how smart phones are getting better and better I can see data use going up as well I don't have wifi t work and my wifi at home is choppy.

So did they make you join the shared plan or did you have the option to drop down to 2g from unlimited?

How is AT&T's network in central NJ and NYC?

I'm currently trying to decide which carrier to go with for the Galaxy S4. I'm leaning towards Verizon, but I'm also considering AT&T because their non-shared family plan is cheaper if you go with less minutes. But I'm worried that their service might still suck, because we were with them until a few years ago and there were a lot of dropped calls, delayed text messages, etc. They also get rated poorly in Consumer Reports and other surveys. So I'm wondering if it's worth giving it a shot and hoping their service has improved, or if I should just go with Verizon.
There are three areas specifically that my family is at the most: Princeton, NJ and Brooklyn, NY and Flushing, NY. I'd love to hear from anyone with recent experience with AT&T in or around those three areas. Any experiences from people in the general tri-state area and New York City would also be great.

I live in Brooklyn and am running a SGS3 I9300 on AT&T's GoPhone service. Since it's the international version it doesn't have 4G LTE, but the 3G network is decent enough. I usually get around 2000Kb/s download when I run the Speedtest.net app.
I really don't like using AT&T though, but it's the only carrier that will work with the I9300's wireless bands, so I'm basically forced to use them or only get 2G. My next phone will be bought in the US and thus I'll be able to switch to T-Mobile or Simple Mobile or another reasonably-priced carrier. I would drop AT&T in a heartbeat if I could. I think they're easily the most evil of all the telecom companies (except maybe Comcast).

[Q] Verizon vs T-Mobile vs Sprint vs AT&T

So my dad wants to get out of Big Reds contracts and prices. He thinking about switching to T-Mobile because it would cost about half of what he's paying now, and he'd be able to get everyone in my family smart phones. He's (and I) are unsure if T-Mobile is the best option since we don't know much about the coverage and speed (and everyone we know uses Verizon).
Now before you say "go use the search option" or "google it", I have. Most of what I found was over a year or two old. A lot has changed since then so I can't really use what I've found as "valid" results.
Thanks for the help everyone and please feel free to explain your answer!
I'm in Long Island, NY and I have T-Mobile, I'm on their $30 5GB 4G with 100 min of calling. The coverage is pretty good and speedy with H+ and I've rarely encountered any "no signal" or edge speeds. But then again I just go to school, movies, ya know a typical teen lol If you know anyone that lives close to you, ask them how the coverage is.
I'm in California and tmobile coverage are horrible.
Since I am on a budget I don't mind. Tmobile work better on newer phone with better and more bands, otherwise go with att.
Tmobile are way affordable. I don't get any signal at work. And quiet horrible at home sometime.

Check t-mobiles site for their coverage in your area, my friend has t-mobile and their is good coverage in his area, I'm on Verizon and would love to switch, the coverage just isn't there in my area yet, can't beat the plans from T-Mobile for sure

[Q] Will this ever be available for Verizon?

As the subject line says, just curious as to if there has been any word on whether or not they will be bringing this device to Verizon or are we out of luck. I'm assuming it won't work on Verizon networks currently, correct? If it's not going to be available I guess I'll be looking for an alternative when my contract is up this summer.

its not cdma compatible. but verizon still doesnt allow devices unless they have verizons carrier branding anyway. thats why you cant use a nexus 7 or nexus 5, even though they do have compatible bands. i dont see this company ever doing carrier subsidization, so im going to say itll never be on verizon.

I highly recommend T-Mobile if the coverage is good in your area. Tmo happens to be the best in my area out of all the companies, so my choice was obvious. Their pricing is fantastic. And if you do switch to them, get the Jump plan so you can get a new phone every 6 months and have insurance

I'm located in the DC area and I believe T-Mobile is here, but I am somewhat limited because I do a lot of traveling. Some of the traveling is to somewhat remote areas where I barely even get service with Verizon. I'm pretty sure some of those areas wouldn't get any reception with less coverage than I get now. But maybe I should start exploring other possibilities. Thanks for the recommendation!

AT&T might do the trick.
There are only a few small areas (such as the area around Penn State University) where there is a noticeable difference between AT&T and Verizon coverage these days.
T-Mobile's network is WAY too small. EDGE-only for miles around where I live.

Check coverage maps. I absolutely love t-mobile where I live. Everywhere I go I get LTE and when I travel out of state I get great service to where I go as well. If anything get a prepaid AT&T plan since they have really good coverage. We're getting band 12 on T-Mobile from Verizon so that's going to help a lot. The only bad part is band 12(700mhz) isn't supported by the Oneplus One.

What's the difference in price and service as compared to regular AT&T. Assuming you just pay for the phone outright at full price? I didn't think AT&T offered unlimited data anymore either. I'd love that.

ST claims "unlimited" data but in reality you are likely to get nastygrams past 2GB. So I'd consider it to be a 2GB plan.
Same network, same coverage, probably worse customer support if you need it (but less likely since there is only one plan and you bring your own device), and no subsidy penalty.
I'm currently on Straight Talk and love it. If/when I finally replace my i777 with this device, I'm going stay on ST. They've improved their customer service considerably - I would advise others to use it; there's absolutely nothing to lose!
