Pls help me guys - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys now is my time! i have to buy my first tablet ever! i have saved money and i cant upgrade sooner cause i am a student so pls help me sincerely...
i have about $650 (US dollars). i want the best tablet.
i love the flash in android devices for internet, but for the resolution i had in my mind to buy the new ipad but then Jelly bean came and it also does not have flash so i changed the idea of getting the new ipad. because both ios and android now dont have flash, i love android. but i thought to just check ipad cause i have never bought and apple product cause i simple hate apple.
my uses r:
1- using internet. i use a lot of internet on my mobile so i need tablet now.
2- watching movies and videos
3- using camera on mobile but a decent tablet camera would be nice
4-listening music
5- transferring big files
well here are my choices. guys dont be one sided for ur note cause no device is perfect! just give me the idea of which to choose between these depending on ur experiences cause many of u guys here would have definitely used more than one tablet.
1- Samsung galaxy note 10.1
2- ipad 3
3- asus transformer pad infinity tf-700
4- asus transformer pad tf-300
5- acer iconia tab A700
guys i expect a good answer from u guys.
thanks

I have an ipad 3 and it's really nice, but if I had to buy a tablet today I'd go with the Nexus tab. And you can force a install of flash on it anyway. It's more portable and after the ios6 the ipad 3 got kindda choppy. I wouldn't get the note 10.1 over the ipad, but definitely the Nexus..

THANKS dude

My first recommendation would be to look at the 10 other threads already discussing this in exhaustive detail.
That being said, If you need high quality pen input, speed and split screen true multitasking get then Note. If your #1 priority is eye candy get a true HD screen. If you can wait, hold off until the w8 tabs come out to see If they are any good and meet your needs. They will cost more but offer Windows if that is important to you.

Since you are a student I'd say you can't really go wrong with the note 10.1.
It can perform the functions of the other tablets but has an additional advantage in the s- pen.
I am not a student but a professional, and in the ten days I've had it I've been using it to replace a pen & paper for taking notes.

I go to school for internet security and let me tell you taking notes and making bad ass power points is why i love this and being that we have to work in teams i made sure i had my sg3 users on my team so that way we can show eachother what it is on our phone and tablets so in my honest opinion get the note at the end of day you will have fun with it

1- using internet. i use a lot of internet on my mobile so i need tablet now. The Note has the fastest browser of any Android tablet and delivers a near desk top experience.
2- watching movies and videos The detail on a tablet with a FHD display will obviously be better. Are the videos you plan to watch encoded as 1080P? If not, or if you're streaming, you'd be hard pressed to notice a difference in image quality. Also, reviewers have pointed out that the colors on the Note's display are the most accurate they've seen on an Android device. Especially flesh tones.
3- using camera on mobile but a decent tablet camera would be nice The Note's camera is at best average.
4-listening music The Note supports BT 4.0 and aptX so using a BT headset can provide lossless audio playback. The Note has the same Wolfson DAC as the SGS3 which delivers, without question, the most accurate and lifelike audio playback. If you used highly compressed audio files it probably won't matter as much.
5- transferring big files I know you posted this in the TF700 forum also. All Asus tablets are a train wreck when it comes to file IO because of the cheap controller/NAND solution they use. This need alone should steer you far away from any Asus tablet. You've been warned.

whatever you do, DONT buy the transformers. a quick glance into those forums will show you that those tablets have defects in almost every thing. i myself returned the tf700 (after 2 replacements) and took the note instead. besides, i think that dev interest in the transformer line is low because of quality issues.

I keep seeing complaints about the GNote 10.1 not having a true HD screen and it drives me nuts. The screen on the GNote 10.1 is great. The difference in the GNote 10.1 and say the Apple retina screen is something that is not really that noticible unless you have them side by side. The HD screen is just for bragging rights. You spend an hour using either screen and you wont notice the difference mostly because the 10" screen realestate is just not big enough to make the difference that noticeable.

Even if you are not going to use the pen feature of the Note 10.1, this tablet still takes the win in my opinion. Ipad's are toys and I just sold my Asus Infinity because it had problems.
So far the Note 10.1 is just great. Super fast, stable and isnt locked down like the Ipads are.

With Asus out the way, meaning I agree with others on this forum that Asus has serious quality issues, have a look at the following video comparing the new iPad with the note. The review is unbiased and should help you decide based on your most important needs:

N8000 is 3g version.
N8010 is wifi version.
If u have other device to do tethering anytime u need, u may choose the wifi version.
Otherwise, 3g version will be better.
And the 3g version can also make a phone call, sms and mms. Just like a normal phone.

[Q] Best Tablet?

I'm off to the US for easter, and have been after a tablet for a while. I was wondering what the best tablet is. Many people say the Transformer Prime is, but is that only for the keyboard? I can spend $800 or £500 so I dont really have a budget. I'd prefer android, but I'll take iOS as well.
Should I not buy one and wait?
TL;DR whats the most powerful and best quality tablet going?
Sorry if there's already a thread on this, I wanted an up to date result and I had a quick look.
iPad
u could go for an iPad or a BB Playbook.......they r better.....buh android is also good.....buh the tab procession is very slow....i wud prefer an iPad coz i hv used all......
Android: Galaxy Tab 7.7
iOS: Wait for the iPad 3
Android: ASUS Transformer Prime or if you want something cheaper ASUS Transformer, but the Prime is better and newer
iOS: Wait for the iPad 3 (which will be out in a few days)
I'd personally go for android
Also if you are a dev(or some sort of related) or wanna go deep in the system or modify/customize your OS then buy an Android Tablet since the iOS is more for businnes people
A little click to the 'Thanks!' button if I helped you
EDIT:
I'm not sure about the Transformer Prime but I guess you can find the first Transformer for less than $800
I Prefer to the samsung tab
Thanks guys, Ill press the thanks button when I'm next on my laptop, just wondering is the transformer series still worth it without getting a keyboard?

I don't think that I can say something definite, but the ASUS Tablets seem to be the best ones out there. I saw the Transformer, the Galaxy Tab(both the 7" and the 10.1"), the Acer Iconia Tab A500, and the iPads(1st and 2nd).
In my opinion Best one as hardware quality(Wifi, etc.) is the iPad. iPad also wins by its incredibly strong case. You feel it as one single piece...
The Galaxy Tabs lack the quality of the case and I don't think that the hardware is good too.
The next one that leads in the case quality is the Transformer(the 1st one, not the PRIME). I'm not sure about the hardware..
The Acer Iconia Tab's case is so bad. I mean when you take it in your hand you get the feeling of holding a toy.
About the dock...
I wouldn't buy it without the keyboard since there's another battery on the dock. And it helps in putting the tablet on a table etc. e.g when you are watching a movie and you don't wanna keep the tablet in your hand
Sorry I wrote a little too much.
I hope I'm helping
That's great thanks, I think Asus is the way to go, I'm also thinking about archos for the video format support

Well, as far as I know you are able to use other Media Players such as MoboPlayer, Vital Player, etc... And they are both free..
You need to think carefully about what you are going to use it for. You mention video, for example, and choosing an ipad will have significant consequences* if, like me, most of your video collection is avi format gathered from here there and everywhere.
*unless you jailbreak it.
I think rather than look for the 'best tablet' - which will change from month to month, have a clear think whether you want to go down the Android or Apple route. Some questions to ask yourself:
1) What other devices I have - are you mainly PC or apple based and if the latter, are you happy with the itunes method of doing stuff? How will all these devices talk to each other?
2) What are you going to use it for?
3) What SIZE you want it to be - have a good look at the 8-9" models from Samsung - in comparsion to the ubiquitous 10" models. Sometimes bigger isn't better.
4) DEALS (check out www.hotukdeals.co.uk)with the £ so weak, prices just aren't hugely favourable in the US at the moment and several very capable tablets are being sold off with good discounts in the UK.
I will be using it to watch youtube videos, films, play games, suft the web, mostly media consumption.
I use a macbook pro, and itunes is really my only option sync wise, which Im fine with. I prefer android but think the ipad has better apps. I'd go for a large tablet as it wouldnt really leave the house.
I have owned both android and iOS products and get along with both, I rooted/jailbroke both as well
Sorry if it seems I want others to do the research but I just cant decide, the ipad seems a bit low spec'd for the price

Well, it feels to me as though the new prices on the ipad2 would suit you nicely. Plenty of hardware for the money, there, i think.
PErsonally, I just can't STAND itunes and my phone is android - so for the sake of just getting to know one of them well, I stick with with google.

Should i get TF700

I can't try any tablets out, cause they din't release in India still now, nexus 7 might come out next month,,,but might be overpriced here :/
Actually i'm asking my uncle whose in USA to get this for me, and only Asus tablets have international warranty
If nexus 7 comes out with 32 gigs ill get that then.
The newest tablets I can compare for you is this and the GNote 10.1
GNote 10.1 runs faster and the s-pen is great
TF700 is a bit laggier but amazing res and yes, a lot of apps aren't that great for 1080p
But we know apps will be

Lets ignore the higher than average build quality issues, since you can just pick a place that will let you return many times until you get one without visual hardware flaws. (make sure you do that.. pick a place with a good return policy)
I am seriously disappointed in this tablet. (it's my second one) It's really slow and really choppy. I would NOT spend my own money on this device. But that's your decision to make. I shouldn't have to unlock and void my warranty to make my tablet work at an "almost" acceptable level. Running Cleanrom 1.0 makes the tablet way better, but still nowhere near the level an expensive device should be at. I'll try Cleanrom 2.1 tonight.
When I say really slow and choppy, this isn't even with games or items that really tax the resources. This is while using things like Pulse reader.. or pretty much anything that has to scroll or requires multiple touch actions in a row. like open email, scroll to bottom to check something, and press delete all in pretty quick succession. You have to pretty much pause between each screen touch so the tablet can keep up or you get "Application Not Responding". This is likely related to the poor I/O. (my 2 year old phone, and 2 year old ACER dont have this issue)
I helped out a previous employer and was given this tablet as a gift.. I keep it because depending on how you look at it, it wasn't really my hard earned cash that paid for it. I'm sure there are many people out there who love their tablet... But compared to my much older and much lower spec Acer A500 this thing sucks. If you dont NEED the keyboard.. try the Acer A700 instead.
The screen on the TF700 is very nice (the serious light bleed is only really noticeable at start-up). I have had no issues with blurriness or general ugliness. Obviously with the high resolution things must scale and any applications built with low quality graphics will be fuzzy when scaled. This is not an issue with the tablet, but rather with the App developer. Any high res screen will have the same issues until all app devs convert to higher quality graphics.
After dealing with my friends terrible TF201 (prime) and now this TF700 (2 of them).. Which proves ASUS is either not capable of fixing the performance issues, or simply doesn't care. Either way it will take a lot for me to throw any cash toward ASUS in the future.
Moved to the correct board.
In the future, for faster service, and be sure to use the report thread button, and to alert one of us...
Okay, but so so many people say tf700 is really good, Wont JB make it better?
or am i better of getting nexus 7 32 gig + OTG to add my external HDD.
I would love to get the note 10.1, but sadly it doesnt have a international warranty.. and i makes no sense getting it from India as its around 40,000rs(800$)
So,i'll be getting either T700 or Nexus 7 or yea ipad mini(though am not intrested in apples products).
Honestly, i don't know why so many people say bad things about this tablet. No device is perfect, they all have their flaws... you just have to choose which ones are most important to you. Since I've gotten this tablet I've experienced nothing but good things... apps and games are fine and will only get better. Speed is fine with the browser2ram apk installed... and the look and feel of this thing is just amazing. Don't let all the negative comments here mislead you. I was worried when I bought this tablet then came here to read only negative things, but after taking the leap of faith I have no regrets.

No don't get it.
Why?
Because if you can't get rid of it easily after being disappointed then there you are.
Stuck with it...
...unless your not too worried about having a problematic tablet.
Well. i agree with all your point's.
Acer and 2-3 more compaines are coming out with 1080p tabs + htc butterfly which is a 1080p phablet.
So, i assume all these "might" lead to a quality full HD app's?
And does the nexus 7 support OTG
Great now i find out it has dead pixel issues :/
I think it's a good investment. I love the **** out of my Inifnity. Yes, there are some QC issues like light bleed (very little in my case) and screen adhesive issues (again, very little for me) but I still think the price is justified. This is why stores have return policies. The best thing a consumer can do in this case, is to give the company as much feedback as possible. The majority of consumers don't realize how much influence they really have. Even the iPad has issues like these. Granted, Apple customer support is probably a lot more responsive. I still think people should not go into the tablet market, being so young as it is, and expect perfection.

I wouldn't recommend this tablet. I have had it since it launched and I waited too long to return it.I waited for JB to be released on it. It ran ok with ICS but now that it has JB its pretty sluggish and choppy compared to other tablets in the Transformer line that run JB(which was a huge letdown considering the hardware in this thing). And as of now, there nothing optimized for its 1080p screen. This tablet is just a little too far ahead of its time. If i could make any recommendation, I would say wait until the Nexus 10 is released.
Yea nexus 10 will be too late(and probably when it comes out i wont be able to get it, cause next year my uncle might not come down to india).. now i'm looking into nexus 7,ipad mini and ipad 3 :/

[Q] looking to buy...some questions

hey guys.
my wife and I are big Samsung Fans. we've got Samsung Smart LED 3D TV, Samsung Blu-ray player, Samsung sound bar, both of us have Galaxy S3s.
We had the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 but opted for selling it a while back. Now my wife has hinted at wanting a tablet again, and I want the latest and greatest, and this time a 10.1 since our phones are 4.8" and it doesn't make sense to get a tablet with only a couple inches more.
is this the latest iteration of the Note tablets? I thought it would be based on the Note 2?
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/GT-N8013ZWYXAR
looking at this, it's got a lower resolution than my phone, very outdated software (i've been on 4.1.1 for almost 2 months!) and hardly seems to have the upgrade in technology I was expecting.
or am I looking at the wrong thing?
if you can steer me in the right direction, that would be great. we want the latest and newest Samsung tablet...this seems to be it, but it also seems to be a little disappointing in the specs.
thanks!
Well, the display does have a lower resolution, but for me it is fine and acceptable.
For the firmware:
Mine was sold with JB 4.1.1

is this the latest iteration of the Note tablets? I thought it would be based on the Note 2?
Latest, yes, all current samsung high end devices use an almost identical chipset, sgs2, sgs3, note, note2, note 10.1 etc.
looking at this, it's got a lower resolution than my phone, very outdated software (i've been on 4.1.1 for almost 2 months!) and hardly seems to have the upgrade in technology I was expecting.
Screen is fine mate, perfectly good for a screen of this this size, more than good i think, anything else is just a waste of pixels and cpu processing imho
if you can steer me in the right direction, that would be great. we want the latest and newest Samsung tablet...this seems to be it, but it also seems to be a little disappointing in the specs.
This is the latest and best you'll get from samsung, there may be more to come in the not too distant future but this is arguable the best on the market right not due to the added Spen.
I would like to know why my note 2 and note 10.1 dont have same spen features? Why does the 10.1 not have the hover preview and some other things the note 2 has? I just bought my 10.1 and am a little confused. But over all i think tablet is awesome i would recommend it. Thanks

In 4.1.1 there's a setting called "Airview" which does exactly what you're describing.
All those features are part of JB, I bet you still are ICS and hence you do not have these features as an when you get the JB upgrade you will get all those feature.
These more of OS dependent features I guess and hence you do not have it in ICS.
Note is one the best tablets around the screen resolutions looks bad on paper but it is one of the best displays around OLED are good but they have their own draw backs like the tint they give you even the Nexus 10 display is not the best.
I would suggest considering the options you have Note is one of the best, I have not used a nexus 10 so I cannot comment on it

Thanks for the responses. I will look at the Nexus 10, though we are partial to Samsung for its ease of integration into everything else we have.
In response to the comments about the resolution of the screen, I want better. I don't think it makes sense to have a lower resolution on a 10.1" device than what I have on my 4.8" phone. The new iPad has much higher resolution And I would have expected better from Samsung.

And you actually got more from Samsung - it has an inbuilt Wacom digitiser that can accurately sens where the s-pen is. Accurately enough that you can write on it, and it will read (and convert) your writing to text.
The screen res is fine, I generally find that the limiting ability is my eyes not the screen
It is due to the wacom digitizer that the screen res is lower... Wacom don't do Hi-res screens.... However, I watch movies on this, browse the web and do work on it. Screen is fine.
I think the "bigger is better" attitude came about with Apple not being able to compete with most things so brought out their retina screen.... The human eye can't detect this many pixels so it's useless to have a 10 inch screen with off the chart resolution....
If you want an all around tablet that does everything and doesn't disappoint then go with the Note 10.1... Otherwise you are looking at other tablets that aren't Samsung... They may have awesome screen resolution but it takes more than 1 thing to make a brilliant tablet....
Trust me, I have had the Nexus 7, the Nexus 10, the Kindle Fire, and now the note 10.1 and the note is by far the best tablet I have owned. The screen should be 1 of the least important factors when choosing a tablet in my opinion, especially when they are all hi def to begin with. If you want a tablet that is best all around, especially for product tivity and getting things done, the note is so far above the competition it's not even funny. I have installed jelly bean on my note and it vastly improved the existing capabilities of the note. It should be out for the US devices within the next month or so. It is well worth the wait, it is the best update I have ever received on an Android device before.
Regarding the Nexus 10, you will be impressed by it screen for the first week or so, then you will realize that it can't do anything your phone can't do, and you will not use it as much. The note is amazing because it can do so many more things than any phone or tablet on the market. You really have to own it to understand how great it is.

bought her the white 16GB Wi-Fi model (GT-N8013?).
now to find out how to root and update it to JB. it came with ICS 4.0.4 and software update shows no updates available.
with time I can figure it out (have rooted and modded every device we've had, including our current SGS3s) but if you can give me a link to the best rooting method (the sticky seems outdated?) and the latest/most stable JB-based rom that would be greatly appreciated.
I had my doubts about getting the note 10.1 because of all the reasons stated in the first post of this thread. I am a note 2 owner so i wasnt keen on getting a tablet with lower specs than my phone but as far as android tablets go at the moment this is top of the range. Its due a jellybean update very soon and is quick on ics anyway.
Multiview is awesome
The Spen is handy and very fun with photoshop touch
Front facing stereo speakers are nice
The battery life is good
Expandable sd card slot is a bonus (and not standard on all tablets)
I do notice the screen pixels on the note 10.1 slightly compared to my note 2 but its still a clear crisp HD display. (And the higher res the screen the more of a drain it can be on resourses).
There is also a 3g note 10.1 which u can actually make calls and text with.
2GB of ram.
Get the note 10.1 in the same colour as your s3 the phone and tablet look great as a set
Overall the note 10.1 is one of if not the highest spec android tablet on the market right now and for me it also offers a few things other tablets cant.
My honest dislikes are the damn 30pin connector and no micro usb. Yes i have an otg adapter but i find the 30 pin connector to have no benefits over the micro usb and just a pain. Personal niggle.
Also its a very slippery device thats a terrible fingerprint magnet but i wouldnt swap it for any other tablet on the market and i spent weeks watching youtube reviews on them all before i bought the note 10.1.
I used to own an ipad 3 i prefer my note 10.1 but im an android fan
So yeah id recomend it

dont get hung up on the screen resolution mate, they all use similar DPI's, where there is a qualitative difference the extra features in the note set it far ahead of the pack for me.

hey guys.
my wife and I are big Samsung Fans. we've got Samsung Smart LED 3D TV, Samsung Blu-ray player, Samsung sound bar, both of us have Galaxy S3s.
I thought it would be based on the Note 2?
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/GT-N8013ZWYXAR
looking at this, it's got a lower resolution than my phone, very outdated software (i've been on 4.1.1 for almost 2 months!) and hardly seems to have the upgrade in technology I was expecting.
or am I looking at the wrong thing?
if you can steer me in the right direction, that would be great. we want the latest and newest Samsung tablet...this seems to be it, but it also seems to be a little disappointing in the specs.
thanks!

Hi Max-Pain,
JB 4.1.2 is coming along officially, www.sammobile.com has just leaked some semi-official versions (Asia and Europe) already bug-free and very smooth.
Don't forget the S-Pen feature can make you "drop" your inkpen once and for all........ love it! It may take a long while that MS tablet can boast such a feature - WP8 can't hold a candle to Android for the time being........ if I could take a strong side, I'd say Android is the best ever for touchscreen, forget Apple and MS........ somebody could pick on me for this, who cares........ Enjoy
thanks for the continued feedback guys...but I think you missed my post above where I said I already bought it.
and i'm already rooted and on jelly bean

Buying the note a mistake?

I got my 16 gb wifi note a few days back. I had the option of choosing between the asus infinity and the note and I chose the note. I'm a student so I mainly use the note for education and gaming.
So here are my question:
1.)Should I have bought the asus tab instead as it has a better display or does it not make that much of a difference.
2.) In how many years do you think the note will be outdated. i.e. Not be able to run any of the high end games?
3.) Is the Note or the Infinity better for gaming?
Please telI me I made the right choice.
Thanks.

I am also a student and I absolutely love my note 10.1. If I want to watch media on a high end display, then I don't turn to my tablet. I can't tell you the Note 10.1 is amazing for gaming, watching movies, etc. I can tell you it's amazing for getting things done. The spen, and apps such as lecture notes, have completely changed my life. I spend hours taking notes, doping assignments, and pulling together material from sources and texts. All of that is faster and easier on the Note. I'm at the point where I don't know what I'd do without the S-pen. It's saved me countless hours of rewriting notes, scanning them, searching for previous work, and editing the notes/work I have done.
Look, if you just want to watch videos and play games, there are better options.
If you are trying to get work done, then you want the note.

I feel the exact same way, except I love watching movies on my Note. But it's perfect in school; it really gets the job done. +1 ^^
I love my note 10.1. As far as playing games and stuff, it may be slow ghtly lower res than the infinity, but I can tell you that I still play shadow gun dead zone and GTA 3VC all the time. And quite a few other games. Great gfx. Everything set to max in game.

Yes you should wait in the PC Mobile Smartphone Tablet world their is always something new . But it is a constant redeveloping circle and the only decision you can make is based on when you want to buy and the price for a product that does what you want .

I Know Someone Who Wanted To Buy A Tablet, Found One They Liked But Heard About Another One That Was Better Coming Out In A Couple Of Months Time. So waited but Didn't Buy The Newer Tablet Straight Away And When They Went To Get It Heard About Another Tablet That Was Due Out In A Few Months So Thought They'd Wait For That.
Here I Am Playing With My Lovely Note 10.1 And There They Are Still Waiting to Buy A Tablet.

I've seen the note as low as 300 usd so the price has dropped a lot. I bought mine for 550 and I still think it was worth it. If you can find one for that low I'd pick it up.

I made the wrong choice the first time around when I was in your position. Despite my initial feeling on the s-pen. I come to find it to be the greatest pointing device ive ever used. Im not an artist either. It provides mouse over function on the web and a degree of pointer precision that is to die for. Copy paste is a f'n breeze. Im also addicted to s-note.
But the real deal breaker for the asus was the ram. 2gb is what your going to want if your looking for extended usefull life. Some might disagree..but they are wrong...lol. plenty of speed tweaks eatup ram. Opera browser has some bad ass options that eat up ram but make the browser faster than any other ive used. So when you only got 1gb....you probably shy away from these options.
I didnt see the display difference. Sure I like how solid and cool the asus looks ans feels. Not a fan of the softer toyish artsy feel of the note 10.1. But IMO the note 10.1 is a better device with better longevity.

It doesn't matter what you buy today, in 3 months, something better faster and cheaper will be out. The main thing is that you are using the device now instead of just thinking about it. The Note can definitely help more with your education, which is a lot more likely to affect what devices you can afford in a few more years. You made a good decision. Now quit playing games and do your schoolwork!

Get that new Note out and take notes on what this guy says!
Seriously though, if you want to game, get a gaming console. While the Note 10.1 runs most mobile games quite well, I really only see these games for filling time between class, killing time while traveling or procrastinating some homework, not extended play time.
The Note will change your life as a student. I am so much more organized than I ever thought I could be with the Note. Having all my course work with me all the time and even past courses makes it easy to find what I need when I need it.
The transition in is different, just embrace it! Once you start to really use the Note to your advantage you'll wonder what you ever did without it.

I'm a student, too. I own the Note for about a week and it's great. The resolution is big enough for any practical purpose and 2 gigs of RAM are definitely better than one. There is an annoying little problem with making hardware keyboards work properly, but it hopefully is solvable. I also fell in love with the SPen almost instantly. Actually, now it seems to me that a tablet without a stylus isn't even half as useful as it could have had been.

[Q] I'm buying a tablet... what are your thoughts on your device now?

I am in the market for a tablet. I have had plenty of Android phones so I'm very familiar. I have no desire to get an iPad(let's get that out of the way up front) but I've been debating an Android tablet or a Windows 8 tablet. I'm currently contemplating a Note 10.1 but am a little nervous about it's age. We all now that a device that's a almost a year old (gulp) is almost ancient (I'm not knocking it because I'm still considering buying it). So...my question is this:
Given the current options, would you buy a Note 10.1 again? If not, what would you buy instead? Thanks everyone!

Its a great tablet and givin it's age it's still the best one available that runs on android, that's my opinion. I haven't used a windows tablet so I can't say anything about them

I would say the Note 10.1 is still the best out there, besides which the S Pen really sets it apart from the competition.
As for Windows 8 tablet vs Android tablet you just have to look at the relative sales for each format to see Android is way out in front and has a comprehensive eco system to match. Microsoft are very much like Apple in that they like to lock their customers in to their own proprietary eco systems, being primarily open source, you don't have to suffer this major limitation with Android.
I've had several Android tablets now and my favourite before the Note 10.1 was the original Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Note 10.1 is a great leap forward.

If i were u I would narrow it down between the nexus 10 and the note 10.1
The nexus 10 has better specs abviously and it will allways has the updated software and the screen is fantastic
I own a note 10.1 so I'll tell u some features on the note 10.1 that I cant live without
1) the multi-window multitasking believe me its very handy and I use it all the time
2) s-pen I actually only use it in some Web pages as a cursor on the menus of that site
3) sd card I dont have to point the advantage here
And if ur worried about the speed of this device I find it rarely ever lagging
But if it was my choice I would pick non of that list I would wait for the next generation of note 10.1 that device will have the display of the nexus 10 and even better specs and more features
If you are doing a lot of writing S Pen is something you just need to have. If not - get Nexus 10, it's also made by Samsung so component quality should be similar.

What DVDT receiver are you using? Would be cool to get...
A simple guide to tablets today: Are you going to use the tablet for work, or studies? Then the Note 10.1 is without competition in the Android section and there won't be another similar this year since Samsung recently released their 8 inch version. Depending on what you're using it for and your budget the relatively new Samsung Series 7 Slate (or something) is worth checking out, it's a bit larger with 11.6 inch but it got a full windows which of course makes it more of a working machine for obvious reasons (MS Office, Matlab and other full version app to mention a few). It's not as handheld though, but I've not seen it irl so I'm not sure how heavy and bulky it really is and it's about twice as expensive.
If you're typing alot the Asus transformer series is of course something to consider, especially if you like building quality.
But if you just want a tablet for surf, maybe games and movies/pictures I believe the best one out there is Nexus 10.
Sent from my GT-N8010 using xda app-developers app
I bought a note 10.1 today after thinking hard Nexus10 vs. I have and like a Nexus7. But I wanted larger, and felt the rear camera and sd card capability made the important decision parts for me. Costco was $479 today. Couple days ago it was $429. 《Sigh》
WIsh I could get rid of the Samsung embedded apps. That is a disadvantage, the Nexus is clean. Almost like I bought it from Verizon. Wonder how clogged up a vz note is《g》
Thought hard about ASUS transformer and the dock. But saw too much griping online. And no local knowledgeable vendor. Though I likes asus mobos and their nexus 7, I couldn't afford to buy a dud. Besides there are so many variation of the tf700 out there that it is hard to know what you are looking at.
Different direction....

Yeah I hear you completely but the more I compared a laptop vs a tablet I realized that I'd be limited on several programs I use on a desktop. A laptop would allow me to still use music creation software, vector manipulation and a few others that I wouldn't really be able to do on a tablet without sacrificing performance. I have come to agree that the note 10.1 would currently be the best tablet choice for what I was hoping to do but a laptop is the way to go for me at this point. Thanks everybody!

I got my Note 10.1 about a month ago after struggling with Note 8.0 quality issues (more than 10 checked and all just poor). I have used a lot of tablets and while it got some time to get used to the low res screen of Note 10.1, after a while it won't bother you anymore. This tablet is really wihtout competiton if thinking of something you can really use daily for work and fun. Also the battery life is excellent. As I have said before, I have no use for a tablet without "S Pen" anymore

I've had both the 10.1 and TF700, and the TF700 is a beauty. If your into rooting and tweaking, the TF700 can be made completely smooth, lagfree, and with no problems. Out of the box, its pretty silly, with some work its the same if not for sure better in real world performance than any other tablet on Android.
The battery in the dock, full usb slot, micro sd, full sd card slot, and most of all the far superior screen is what sold me on it. It really depends on what your going to be using it for, I use it for class and the dock is invaluable as well as all of the extended memory. I also watch plenty of HD movies and they are crystal clear which is a plus. But I definitely see the appeal of the Spen, but I'd never use it.
