Hi guys,
well first post here and I've been told I can only really post here.
Some background info, I've installed the Cyanogen 9 custom ROM onto my Galaxy S. Everything works fine and use Titanium Backup for restoration. Everything is perfect, except for call logs.
My ROM before this was based the the official 2.2 Samsung firmware.
Yes, of course, after I've changed ROMs I read that TB has a Migrate to diff ROM feature which needs the paid version for, which I don't have. I also read that you can use the XML option (which is also the paid one) but I didn't use that with my initial backup.
TB backs up to 4 different files; .properties, .tar.gz, apk.gz & odex.gz. I'm not 100% on what they all are but as far as I'm aware, .gz is a compression system, like .rar/.zip. I think apk is the App file and the odex is the Data file. I believe call logs are in com.android.providers.telephony.
Actual question: Is there some way I can convert any of these files into XML so I can restore it, possibly with the Call Logs app?
Side questions: Does anyone know fully what the 4 different files are that TB creates? Can I install my old phone.apk/contacts.apk and remove the current one?
Thanks heaps for your help! :good:
EDIT: OK, it seems it's the com.android.providers.contacts file, not telephony. I extracted the .tar.gz file and found phone numbers in there I recognise.

Hello, I would like to create my own update.zip that would be compatible with clockwork mod. I have several files in several locations that I manually copy over after new installs like multicolored bash nano iwconfig iwlist etc. And I think it would be much easier to create a installable package for that, I also delete a number of built I. Apps like tweeter amazon etc. And I have seen the scripts inside oyhers update.zip's that I could add the bash commands to remove those things as well.unfortunately I know nothing about what clockworkmod wants and I see binarys inside these zips dont know if those are customized for each zip or the same in all of them, I dont know what files or information is absolutely required. The best possible solution is if I had a blank update.zip that held all of the required files settings and all I needed to do was add my files and asd a few lines to a preexisting script to remove sum stock apps.thinking back I might have seen a file containing all the files names and md5 chucksums for each as well which if necessary I can do. Is there something like this available for download sumwhere? If not ajy resources to learn the required information and find the required binarys.thank you in advance.

Hi,
I've been trying to learn the same thing. I'm curious if you found anything useful since posting this.
Of course, if I find anything, i'll post back here too.
Thanks.
Same problem here
Good to hear someone with same problems. I want to create a generic ROM for myself and I want to use ClockworkMod to help flash it instead of using fastboot.
Well, I have found no documentation about what ClockworkMod may need for a zip file.
But I guess it could be possible to just replace them with your own by downloading an existing zip file created by someone else.
I'll try it to see if that works or not. Of course, a documentation would be better.
I regularly flash a new CM7 Nightly as they are released and I have to manually modify some things each time a new rom is flashed. I change screen density and add a notification ringtone that CM7 does not have. I wanted to automate that. Since I have to reflash the Google Apps each time anyway, I thought why not modify the gapps zip to include my changes. After searching the web I found a little info about how to do it. I just modify the zip on my computer using WinRar, copy the file to my device and re-sign the package using signapktic which is free on the market. Then flash using CWM. It worked great. No more manual adjustments. There are some instructions here which helped me:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/15030-moving-apps-to-system/
I been getting into the kitchen
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
So far i`ve managed to integrate a few apps , ringtone should be easy
next the fonts from utmost rom
thanks to the kitchen, Im now running at script kiddie level
What is the best way to extract files out of my Android device? In CM6 you could edit lockscreen text. In CM7 you cannot, yet my Titanium Backup restore has restored an edit to my lockscreen text. I'm not talking about the Carrier String in eri.xml.
I'd like to rip all files from my phone to disk, make the change using CM6, re-rip and then compare the files using a script to see what has changed. I'm not familiar enough with Android OS to know what/how to pull all system files. Any hints/pointers?
Summary: How can I transfer apps from the stock rom (that are stored as.apk and .odex pairs) to my current rom?
Full Story: The stock rom (Gingerbread) for the Samsung YP-G70 has a working fm radio app that I'd like to use with my current rom (CM 10.2). I saved the .apk and .odex files from a stock install to my sd card.
Is this even possible?
If anybody's managed to do it, what're the steps? (the default apps are stored as .apk with a .odex file and xultimate can't seem to handle the files (get "top level error" about missing files and such))
No mate it is not that way....

Already tried that. All the results I'm seeing involve a third party app backup tool (which I've already tried without success), or don't address the mixed apk & odex issue.
no it wont
it wont work as it is odexed .... try deodexing the apk but still i would say it wont work but still u try...
I have a question here , is there any way to Installing duplicated apps ver without overwrite each other ?
Eg : firefox verion 21 smooth and fast but version 24 provide more features. Hoping to install both each other if I needed some features.
Currently the only option is , backup data 22 and 24 with titanium bk and restore it when I need the features.
Possible to install alongside without overwrite ? needed to modified the .apk ? I was hoping to retain the original apk.
It's just like you installing Office 2007 and 2010 alongside in the same window.
Thank you

I think you cannot without modifying the two .APK, can you rename one then copy to root/system/app ?

By modifying the package name of any of the .apk file, I think you should be able to install both versions.. because while installing an App, Android will compare the .apk's package name with the .apks already installed before... The point of modifying the .apk file is to make sure that Android sees it as a completely different app, and not think of one as an update to the other...

The linked having various discussion but non of them are working
I had google around and the only way is to have different profile https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fahrbot.apps.switchme&hl=en
Which is very risky getting boot looping.
The safest method is to modified the .xml but I am not an android dev.I doesn't know how to modified it.
Does anyone know any tools which can modified .apk to custom version. ?
Thank you

For modifying .apk files you need to Download and Setup a small tool called APKTOOL (for Windows)
Below is the link to the GUI version of apktool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33815550
The original version of apktool works with Windows' Command Promt's command line interface... If you want that instead, then Google "apktool for windows" or anything similar
After decompiling, I think you need to edit your AndroidManifest.xml file BUT I am not sure about this.. please Google "how to change application package name android"
Hi,
I decided to try to make a modification of an existing ROM which would suit me better right after flashing. Nothing large, only adding some apps and stuff. But Ive got a couple of questions:
1) Ive read some apps cant run from /system partition. Looks like that (at least) one of mine is one of them - it FCs when in /system/apps or /system/priv-apps. Is there any workaround to make this work? I dont want to lose it when doing factory reset (or to flash the ROM again after every factory reset).
2) I wanted to add langunages (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2602704) but according to forums those files are odexed. How could I deodex them to make them run on an deodexed ROM?
3) I want to include the faux kernel but Im not sure if simply copying those files into the ROM would do ... in the other cases it went ok but Im not sure about the kernel - Im afraid I could break something.
4) Can I also use the ROM file to store other files? I mean - if I put files into the ROM in /data/media/0/ would it simply appear in my home directory or could this break anything - by which I mean to destroy my existing files?
Thanks for any leads!

1) What is the app? on system/app they should work fine since kitkat update, i think
2) To deodex i used a kitchen i got out of foro nexus (cant get the link atm) that only worked on linux. If you want to translate things in your rom, i think it can be done without deodexing, im not sure.
3) Copy paste should work fine but if you take a look at faux's meta inf, see what's there, merge it with your rom's meta inf. But it should work with cp
4) You can use the meta inf to link files to storage like your sdcard, yes. However, if you try to put a wallpaper somewhere inside the rom it wont show up

Thanks very much for your reply! Now:
1) The app is a game, Traffic Racer. When I flash a ROM where this app has been put in /data/app it runs fine. In /system/app or /system/priv-app it FCs. As you say it should work Ill try to do it again - but I tried it twice in /system/priv-app and once in /system/app already so I dont believe it would work. BTW I use APKs from update.zip created by TiBa if it could be relevant.
2) Linux is not a problem so Ill try to find the link here.
3) Ill try only to copy the files first before messing with meta files.
4) I only want to store some apps config backup files (for Apex launcher and Agenda widget mainly).

Oh, games could cause issues, yes. Better leave it on data app. Messing with meta inf is totally easier than it sounds anyways and could help fixing any possible bugs, you gotta try it. Backup files i dont think they'll work on the rom but you can store them into storage/emulated/legacy which is the storage, though you could do this any other easier way

Thanks again! Ive got one more question about including the faux kernel. The updater-script is supposed to run this command during the installation in CWM:
Code:
package_extract_file("boot.img", "/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/boot");
... which I dont know how to implement. If I would only copy all files it would overwrite the original boot.img (Kitkat+ 1.1 original anyway) - which im not sure is the same. So Im not sure if it wont screw something up ...
Or is this extraction the same as copying it? Does the "/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/boot" just mean - "its a block device on first SD, partition name boot"?

Put faux's boot.img on the rom first, then on updater script go to the line that refers to extracting boot.img (should be like the last one) and replace that with the command on faux's updater script. That means it will extract it in that directory, nothing else. Be sure to copy modules aswell and set the perms
Q&A threads should be created in the Q&A forum... not the Development forum.
Thread moved.
One more question - is there a special way how to pack the ZIP file? Cause I unpacked a ROM, added some apks, packed it but it didnt work (no error, just ended at "opening rom" or what the CWM message is) ... but when I modified existing ZIP it went fine ...
