I've heard that flashing the 'update' removes root and relocks the bootloader.
I really have no idea how to go back to ICS but i've read that theres a way. I just can't find any clear directions.
just download the new rom from asus and flash it in recovery.
when it reboots you will be back to stock with new bootloader.
I thought the bootloader went untouched by reflashing the stock ROM? (I might be mistaken here, but isn't that the entire issue with not being able to get back to the ICS bootloader after flashing the JB bootloader?)

No you can't relock. Not sure where the op may have heard that as I have not seen it posted anywhere.
Might be confused with losing root?

It was removed from the asus site, could you provide a link?
Also....do I need to rename it to anything and place it anywhere specific? Because I have already tried and it doesnt work for me. When i go into recovery i get the android with the exclamation point in red. So....idk....
its there i just looked.
you do need to unzip it since it is double zipped for some reason.
then flash as usual.

I'm implying that you're on a custom ROM at the moment. You'll have to flash one of the stock ROM images, then you can get OTA's again.
It doesn't matter if you're rooted or have an unlocked bootloader.

Hey mate, thankyou for helping. I've not actually received it yet, bought one off ebay and I am just pre-empting - If you flash stock does the root and unlocked bootloader become standard again??
(I'm upgrading from an old Galaxy 3, so am reasonably familiar with flashing, but want a simple life now and am going stock Google )

Nope, flashing a stock image will not affect your bootloader being unlocked. You'll have to run the "fastboot oem lock" command to lock the bootloader again. Check one of the turorials here

I have been flashing several ROMs using ROM Manager and the bootloader wasn't affected by this. The stock OTAs kept unrooting the phone though.

That's normal, the OTA's reset the permissions on key folders, effectively SU looses it's execute permissions, removing root. What i do now is download the OTA to the SD card, apply it, re-apply the SU.zip to keep root, modify the restore-recovery script so i can keep CWM, then reboot.
I'm not sure how it's going to go with ICS, but we shall see.

I've borked a JB rom and my CWM backups were not working because of the bootloader.
I had to flash ASUS stock back to get the bootloader.
Some zip files would be useful in case someone wants to go back to ICS

without NVFLASH I wouldn't even attempt such a thing.

Asus wouldn't b that nice would they?
On Galaxy Nexus I do that all the time. They have an ICS bootloader and a JB one. I can check the version in Fastboot mode.
I am trying to flash some JB ROMS and if I fail all my CWM backups are useless since the bootloader is the incorrect one..
The tab gets stuck after restoring I assume because of the incorrect bootloader.

I attached the ICS bootloader, I would strongly suggest you wait until NVFLASH
for the tf300t is released to mess with the bootloader because you have no way
back if it does not work (no fastboot).

In the official cm10 thread it states that nvflash is not going to work with the jellybean bootloader. I think they where close to a release before jellybean dropped.

Not only is ICS running smoothly again thanks to the bootloader but THE .30 BOOTLOADER ALLOWED THE JB KERNEL TO RUN!!
That's right I was able to flash my own TF300 ROM which has everything but the kernel removed from the blob and it ran JB while leaving the bootloader intact.
nice! good to hear asus has things figured out.
I'm guessing this is part of the prep for JB with the bootloader supporting both.

Yes, but you have to extract US_epad_user_9_4_5_30_20120907_UpdateLauncher.zip to US_epad-user-9.4.5.30.zip and flash it.

I've flashed it several times today. You will have to re-install TWRP via fastboot, and then flash SuperUser, if you care about root.

I know it's stated that you have already done this, but I really don't want to screw something up and I don't have NVFlash to recover from a hard brick.Can you, or others, confirm that you can indeed move from the .13 JB bootloader to the .30 ICS bootloader successfully and then be able to use the NVFlash?
Edit: Oops, I guess this is for the TF700 only, or will this work on the actual TF300 as well? Anyone know?

I wanted to flash dhacker's 4.4 ROM. So first I want to make a backup of my phone pending something goes horribly wrong. I'm having issues booting into recovery. When I click on "recovery", the phone seems to restart like it's going into recovery, then I get a sleeping android bot with his belly open and a red triangle with an exclamation point in it on my screen, forcing me to reboot the phone. Any ideas?
- Is it that I don't have an updated version of CWM or TWRP? Anyone have links to working versions?
- Is it that I have the "lite" versions of said apps above and need to donate to open the recovery features?
- Is it something else and I'm just not smart enough to think of what it could be?

The dead robot is your stock recovery screen. You need to hold vol+ and tap pwr at the same time to get into your stock recovery.
When you flash a recovery.img, you need to immediately boot back into the recovery to get the updater script to finish. If you don't boot straight into recovery after flashing, the stock recovery will override the aftermarket recovery. Also, do you have an unlocked bootloader?

Thanks, I'll give it a try.
I did at one point have an unlocked bootloader, but I wasn't sure whether the latest OTA updates only blocked the ability to unlock (if someone hadn't already unlocked) or if it locked back up the already unlocked ones.

once the bootloader is unlocked, it cant be locked back.
Bonus. That's what I thought, something about creating a small nuclear explosion in the phone that destroys the bootloader locking resistor or something. Glad I took care of that prior to the update that shut the door on that exploit.
Something else I thought of... I'm reading that 4.4 makes it much harder to root phones. I guess we won't know until the OTA release comes out, but I'm hoping Voodoo Rootkeeper maintains root during the update like it has in the past for me in previous updates.

If your bootloader is unlocked, you don't need to maintain root. You just need to flash a SU zip in recovery.
so if i unlock my bootloader, i will still be able to receive the eventual ota 4.4 update correct?

Yes, but you won't be able to unlock if you're system version is newer than May.
hey rikrong...as i had mentioned in another thread, found out that i am indeed able to root unlock etc...(xt925). so it's safe to say that unlocking the bootloader for obvious reasons is needed to flash roms but is not negatively affecting the phone from functioning in anyway right? sorry if these r stupid questions but just trying to understand...the only issue is warranty

Yeah, sorry, I lose track of the posts. Just simply unlocking the BL should have no adverse affect on the phone, just the warranty, like you said.

Whats modified about it?
use this, if you want to flash the stock rooted rom via twrp etc...
if you use the stock one, your bootloader is locked after flash the stock rom

Incorrect mate, it's still unlocked after flashing factory images. I flashed factory files yesterday and I only lost root and recovery which I expected to happen.

It's just the latest bootloader.img, he thinks if you flash it separately you won't lock your bootloader before flashing the stock rom via recovery.
To my knowledge, nothing locks the bootloader, except you (via fastboot or a toolkit).
So i can install the stock image i downloaded from google and still keep root? What about recovery?
Sorry for noob question, i've only used custom ROMs in the past.
If you flash the stock L image with fastboot, you lose root and recovery but your boot loader stays locked/unlocked (whatever it was before).
To get recovery back, just flash it with fastboot.
To get root back, flash the boot image from the OP or a modified kernel like ElementalX and then flash SuperSU.
