Accidentally tried to flash International ROM, help. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

On my Verizon GS3.
I was using a stock-rooted ROM, and then today tried to install the latest wanamlite.
Even though it says No Wipe, I did just to be safe in CWM (or so I thought).
When trying to flash the ROM, I got the "assert failed:write_raw_image("/tmp/boot.img","boot")" error , and I remember seeing a (status 7) error
Then I tried to reboot... and then nothing but a black screen.
I've tried the Volume Down + Home + Power button to get into "Download Mode" with no success.
I would appreciate any help towards getting this rom on my device.
PS. I've searched, and read these threads

Have you taken out the battery and waited at least 5 minutes to if you can get it to download mode?

First - wrong forum. This should be in Q/A
Second - What? You can't flash international ROMS on a US Version of the S3. Your phone is probably hard bricked if you can't turn it on or get into download mode.Try charging it for a while, and a battery pull at some point but if you still can't turn it on, it's a paperweight. Read up next time before flashing. Looks like you need a JTAG.
Spend $60 here to get it fixed.

^Wasn't sure if this was right or wrong, has to do with Roms, but you're right. If I can move it myself, I will.
And you're right again with that second statement. I didn't successfully flash the international rom, but attempted to, and messed up.
Thanks for the repair link, I'll have to consider that if I can't fix it myself.

Best of luck. If it's a hard brick you probably will have to send it in. JTAG requires some technical expertise and equipment, but it's around $60 (not sure about shipping) so it's a lot better than buying a new phone. If you could turn your phone on but not get into download mode, a USB jig could possibly work.

You can't go to download, but can you get back to recovery? Also, development thread isn't for things related to ROMs but for releases. Also remove your battery plug your phone in, put the battery back in and watch the led, what color does it turn?

I see someone on eBay offering a fix for $30. Thanks for notifying me about this service existing.

Can't go into recovery. And I'll remember that for now on, just having an off day.
With the battery and the SD card both out, and with the phone plugged in, the LED is red. It turned off after a while.
And thanks Kenny.

It's all good, no reference needed.
$30 doesn't seem too bad, not as bad as being 2 weeks without this phone.. (especially when the only backup phone I have available with me is an Omnia .. :crying:

$30 is better than $60, but the other place seems pretty reliable with quick turnaround. I don't know how legit that ebay place is, so maybe it's worth it to pony up a little extra.

Yea, I mistakenly posted this in the Development section.

I would highly suggest trying the USB jig, I've heard you can get them for a few bucks on ebay, so it'd be worth a shot. If your skilled with electronics you can make a simply USB adapter with a 300k Ohm resistor across the data pins.
---------- Post added at 09:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:06 PM ----------
And just a general question about hard bricks, how does one prevent their phone from entering download mode unless they flashed something over the bootloader/download partition? Or do many international roms typically include the boot partition in them?

The international S3 has a different partition layout than the us s3. So for example, if the cwm zip that flashes the rom wants to flash a kernel to a partition that is earlier in the boot chain (maybe aboot), then you've now accidentally overwrote the wrong partition.
The easiest way to see exactly what partitions may be affected is to extract rom zip to a folder on your pc and look in the updater-script file (buried in META-INF/com/google/android) that cwm uses to flash the ROM and kernel.
You should see some statements that attempt to mount or write to partitions (mmcblk0p5, mmcblk0p7, etc). If you compare the list of partitions in the ROM's cwm uodater-script to the list of US s3 partitions in the opening post of Adam's Bootloader Unlocking thread (in the original development forum), you could see where things went wrong (e.g. accidentally flash a kernel to mmcblk0p5 instead of mmcblk0p7, etc).
Also, keep in mind that some partitions are smaller than others so writing could have poured over into an adjacent partition.

no, and i don't know how it works
Research. Do some.
Answers are out there. Trust the joker.
Ps. Trust me, your not the first to brick. There is a user that has patiently sat with a soft brick for over a week.
If you did what should of been done before you had a chance to brick there is always a way.
Debug enabled?
Rooted? (In some cases not even necessary to be fixed)
ADB. Almost anything can be done with adb.

Hey there, aforementioned bricked guy reporting in.
Check out the Odin flashable stuff in another thread; that may be your best bet right now. If you can't get into recovery as usual, pop the battery, plug in usb, hold volume up and down, and out the battery is while holding those buttons.
If all else fails, AT&T will replace your phone for free if you got it on contract. I was worried about them denying me because I had a Captivate kernel (it displayed Galaxy S i897 on the splash screen) but they took it back regardless and I got a new phone out of it. Just play dumb with them just in case. ;D
For future reference, don't do anything to your phone just yet that isn't in the development forum. This is not a Galaxy S phone. You'll risk bricking it if you get too ahead of yourself and current development for the device.

you will need the visual c++ redistributable package as well
this is like odin but you will need 7zip to extract the phone and csc files. you will also need the bootloaders and pit file if you repartition which i believe are in the extra files .zip lost1 posted
i have no luck also with heimdall i this there is problem with the ROM file and there is now ROM except the one posted by lost1. and body can get me a new ROm please that will be my last try

To be honest, if you did what I did, I'm almost positive an easy fix without much previous knowledge of Android is next to non-existent at this current point. Either there's something wrong with the files posted or we both destroyed it beyond what anyone here can help with atm.
It may be easier to return it, play dumb, obtain a shiny new Infuse and know to play it a little smarter this time. ;D

I have used the jig and it works fine. however, if he is getting the phone and pc with yellow sign between them, that means when he ran odin he selected re-partition. Dont select that one. you can still re odin with the phone and pc with yellow sign between them. download mode after doing that again

Bricked Phone after flashing Steve0007's img

I was one of the unlucky testers before Steve0007 closed the thread. Did anyone figure out how to save our Sensation after the bad flash? My phone does not light up or respond to any button presses but when plugged into the computer it is recognized as an "unrecognized device."
I guess this is the risk we run being early testers. Hopefully someone figures it out otherwise I've got myself very expensive paper weight.
I assume no two button rescue? And this should be in q/a or general
Can you get to the bootloader?

Yes as I said, this happened to me exactly when i had a tmo HD2 and flashed a european ruu and it was dead. I tried everything. You will have better luck to talk to your insurance company.
Have you got ADB installed on your pc? If not start downloading and installing it. I will find some links, in just a sec.

if you just need ADB you dont need all of the stuff above or to set up a path if its extracted to those folders

Ok guys, it looks like the firmware that I posted to another thread from 3.06 bricked few devices. I have flashed it and it worked fine, so i tried again with the package i posted and indeed it is corrupted as it bricked also mine
My device does not respond, so I would think it is dead
I feel sorry for those who have bricked also theirs based on the package i posted.
I am closing my Rom thread and starting now my Rom developments will be for my own use. I will not publish anymore my work.
Again I feel sorry for those who have lost their devices.

That way you keep your reputation rather than running away after bricking devices?

[Q]Flashing roms help

I have a stock Infuse 4g from AT&T and I would like a step by step, like a tutorial of everything I have to do for flashing custom roms, what to backup, installing CWM, etc. Thanks.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514886
[REF] Super Infuse Noobie Question Thread. Lots of questions answered
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
Yes, I know about that thread, but they don't answer all of my questions, like for example: I have stock GB, do I still root with super one click? What is the first step in flashing custom roms, rooting and then installing CWM? How do I install CWM? What to use to backup apps? What is Rom manager from the android market and what is it for, is it useful? How to backup contacts? Before flashing, should I remove the sim card? When flashing, is it always done in CWM? If so, what's the exact process?
What I want is more of a fool proof step by step, just to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible. I had to use Heimdall's one click back to stock to go from froyo to GB UCKJ4 because of the boot loop even though the phone wasn't rooted or anything, it was stock. If I did that, what are my options? What should I do if I want to flash custom roms from scratch? Also, CWM is kept even after a factory reset or a wipe? it doesn't get deleted in any way when you want ti flash another Rom?
Wow, I'm sorry but you should do some research first before you ask these questions. Google has an excellent feature called search. I'm sure if you use it you can find your answers as they have all been asked before. Everything I have learned has been from reading and rereading everything I could before I attempted rooting. Android central has a great guide to everything root. Then come back with questions. Sorry to go off but it seems like people just come here to have their hand held. I'm sure you could find someone to donate to on here that would take you by the hand if that's the route you choose.

Let me just throw this out there: as a noob myself, I understand where op is coming from. On forums this large, it is easy to get lost. I also find that I spend so much time reading things that don't answer my questions. I know that's part of the process though, but can feel pretty overwhelming.
May I suggest that not just 1 person has to answer all the questions. Maybe u come across a post like this and answer just 1 or 2 questions, or paste in a link or 2 to where the specific question is answered.
Also, I know that I've asked a question in the most appropriate place & someone has come back saying it's not the right place, even though it's in the q&a - noob - device forum. It's just hard at first. So, pls, don't bust op's chops too bad, b/c somewhere on here it says that it helps everyone if anyone takes some of their time to educate.

1st step - root, then - backup more than just 1 way-use some from market and put things in more than 1 place; Titanium Backup seems to be standard around here too. Here is a great youtube link that helped me a lot to prepare: http://youtu.be/ozNVeGPUlU8

Can't think of another way of saying this...HELP!
So, I was able to get 3e and clockworkmod recovery installed on my Infuse. (A great accomplishment for me, trust me)
I went through the process of wiping data and caches to install my new ROM but I put the two zips (Cyan7 & Google Apps) on the external sdcard so when I went to install them I couldn't see them. I thought my only option then was to chose to restore from backup in CM recovery and now I'm stuck on the Samsung boot logo.
I tried a battery pull and VOLup/VOLdwn/POWER to try to get into recovery but I'm still stuck on the boot logo. What can I do now?
I'd really appreciate your help. Cheers.

Well, if it were me, I'd pull batt and let it sit while I search this site to see what other people have done when stuck in the loop. You're sure to find answers somewhere in/related to being bricked threads, though I'm sure you're not bricked, so relax and take a breath. I'd offer other suggestions, but I'm too new, so it'd just be speculation on my part.

[Q] Hard Bricked GS3

Hello, I just got my new GS3 yesterday. Eager to root and ROM and all the fun stuff. I rooted and unlocked, and used Odin to flash CWM Recovery. Flashed the latest version of Android Revolution HD 16. I wiped cache, dalvik, the whole 9 yards. I did not WIPE boot.img though. Flashed Android Revolution 16, it all went good. Clicked Reboot Phone in CWM Recovery and nothing. No LED light on when plugged into USB or via wall charger. No Download mode, or recovery. Nothing, like nothing at all. Anything you guys suggest?
EDIT: I am not sure if it is Hard Bricked. When I plug it into my PC, it makes a sound. Also tries to install a driver and fails every time.
EDIT2: Okay guys, my fault. Downloaded a ROM that was meant for a different model/type GS3 forum when I have a Verizon GS3 (SCH-1535). Anyone know how to fix this problem? Please disregard this incorrect forum post.
If you flashed anything related to the international S3, Google search J-tag! Or return the device and play dumb...

I am paying for full coverage every month too, and okay, couldn't I also get a Usb JIG to force download mode?

No read my edited post. You most likely hardbricked your device, meaning you no longer have download mode.

Well, I NOW have a red LED on my phone when it is plugged into the PC without battery, sd card, or sim card. Is that a good sign?

I have faith, thought. I can maybe push something using ADB you think?
You need J-tag.
If there was a way to fix it yourself, nobody on here would worry about bricked phones.
Gotta be super careful and read every single word of a ROM thread and if you aren't sure if it will work for your phone or not, just ask and someone will say either yes or no

I guess so. I read something about plugging the phone into the pc without the battery so the red light would come on. Then, you would hold a combination of buttons, and while you're still holding them, put the battery back in while you're still holding them. I guess J-Tag is the only way? Where can I get this? Someone link me. Thanks!

No one is going to stop you. You flashed an international ROM on an s3. This is a known method of hard bricking your s3.

That sounds about right. Luckily it's $60 and not $600 for a new phone

Same thing happened to me. Needed a j-tag but risked calling Verizon told them my phone wouldn't come on all they asked me was if I damaged it with water or heat. (Either Verizon doesn't care or actually they just scrap the phone) I was rooted and unlocked but flashed the wrong carrier rom. Now I have a replacement phone that cost me $0.
They sent me the 16g and not the 32g by mistake I figured I've pushed my luck enough

First go to Get.cm download a d2vzw rom. Put it on your sd card. Put the sd card into phone
If you have ADB on your computer do
Code:
adb reboot recovery
You should boot in Clockwork Recovery.
From there flash the D2VZW Rom, Wipe Data,
That should save you.

How do you figure? How can you adb recovery when the device wont turn on? The device is hardbricked plain and simple...your advice is simply false hope.
I do have a question for the op and the other guy who flashed an international ROM. Were did you get them and how did you find then ( like was it a site you googled?) I've noticed a lot of these lately and am wondering if it's something that can be avoided (besides the obvious read what you're flashing)
To the adb guy there us no recovery on his phone it was overwritten by part of the international ROM. he needs to JTAG his phone, don't call Verizon. You did this to your own phone, pay the 60 and learn your lesson.

One day someone is going to find a way to unbrick the hard brick, lol. Eventually. Anyways, if it was "dead" then why would it show my S3 as "QHSUSB_DLOAD"? and attempts to install a driver. I'm gonna try to find the right driver to manually install, and troubleshoot from there. I mean come on guys, be optimistic. How great if this problem was RESOLVED? Also, the download mode got wiped/overwritten from a different ROM for a different model of the GS3. What about the Recovery? CWM? If I can just magically, somehow, maybe even push some type of command. Even maybe ADB? Or something in the terminal. I'm really trying to find a solution. So in the future, we will have a SOLUTION.
Anyways, I'm going to be shipping my GS3 Monday or Tuesday for Samsung to repair (If they can) or replace for no charge!
Wish me luck guys, gonna be really thinking out of the box.
Hope you can figure it out. But someone had a way to fix a hard brick.... The JTAG

Okay guys, I've actually have gotten some good progress, I hope! I came across a thread that a guy named (therockk) he also, hard bricked his S3. Sent him a PM, and he told me he got ODIN to recognize his hard bricked S3 "WITHOUT" download mode. He said he found a driver for QHSUSB_DLOAD and manually applied the driver update. His PC, then recognized his S3 as a ID CODE: COM10 - I do not know what that means, I asked around. Some people say that it is the code for when your phone is connected in Download Mode? Nevertheless, this is good in my eyes. The phone as now, recognized as COM10 in ODIN, in its hard-bricked stage. This could be that also, maybe, the phone will be recognized in ADB/Fastboot commands. Maybe we can get something going here guys! I'm trying to look on the bright side. I'll keep you posted.
EDIT: Okay guys, was looking at some screenshots of the CODE ID's. Like I said, my buddy "therockk" said he got ODIN to recognize his phone as a COM10, while being hard-bricked. I am guessing there are different CODE ID's for each model/version of the S3. I did make an observation that he, has a different model S3 ( i747 ) and he got his to see COM10. Which means it was Added!! - My Verizon S3 (SCH-1525) should come up as COM4 when the PC recognizes it. When I do get my PC to recognize my S3, I will confirm that my SCH-1535 phone comes up as COM4, if not, I will confirm the correct CODE ID. therockk's i747 came up as a COM10, that is confirmed.
EDIT 2: Okay guys! Updated the driver successfully! QSHUSB_DLOAD is now Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM8). I feel like we're getting closer. Now to see if Odin will pick it up!
I can probably help you through this problem after work tonight if you are still having trouble. Just pm me around 10pm est

[Q] Hard Bricked? Don't see how....

Ladies and Gents,
I made sure I chose the correct RUU based on my CID (CWS__001)
I relocked my phone and attempted to install "RUU_EVITA_UL_JB_45_S_Cingular_US_3.18.502.6_Radio_ 0.24p.32.09.06_10.130.32.34_release_signed.exe". After the RUU finished my phone seems to be hard bricked.
Won't Boot.
No power lights.
I knew this could happen when flashing an international version. AFTER getting owned I also found this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181929. Which was blatantly in the beginning of the forum. Has anyone found a fix for this issue, or is my only option JTAG repair?
Thanks,
Ryan

You could take your phone back and tell them it won't boot etc.
If you can't get it to boot neither can they, so no-one will know it's been unlocked/rooted.
Some people will say this is fraudulent, but hey, if you can live with yourself who cares what anyone else thinks?
Pft I returned mine to Telus when the same thing happened to me. The way I see it, it was HTC's RUU that bricked my phone, not me. Like you, I did not have supercid and was S-ON.
You could try the unbrick Evita thread. If you make it past step 3 you can save your phone.
You'll need to boot to Linux.

they did refund. minus the cost of shipping and something else, however. it was worth a try though... All I know though is I will never touch an elemental kernel again... not worth it that's for sure...

Just curious about your situation. Did the kernel flash successfully and then just not boot? What ROM were you flashing it over? Tons of people, myself included, have flashed that kernel without issue so I'm interested in what exactly happened.

Sure, I too have used their kernels and have never had an issue until this time. So I started to install the kernel and it froze at I believe 60%? Then it sat... It said the flash could take awhile so to just wait so I did... For 2 hours. I knew something wasn't right because no elemental flash has taken my phone longer than a few minutes before this one so without thinking i'd hurt anything I held the buttons to hard power off the phone. After it shut off it's been completely dead since. No charge lights, no sign of any life at all other then the QHSUSB_DLOAD under device manager when plugged into my PC. the rom that I had flashed was the latest cleanrom. super bummed but i'll get over it. the worst part about this was I had pics of my kids that I had not backed up that are now lost.

That does suck about the pictures. That would upset me more than the phone as well. I went and looked at the thread after I saw your post and saw a couple of other bricks aside from yours in the last couple of hundred posts. Very unfortunate that flashing a kernel bricked it. I try to stay away from anything that uses the Aroma Installer unless there are no other options, not saying that was the problem, but I've had numerous issues with it previously. After seeing multiple bricks from a basic kernel flash I'm going to definitely be more cautious about what I flash from now on. I'd be totally screwed if I bricked this phone. Anyway, hope you end up with something better out of this, like the HTC One.

Funny thing about the One... I was thinking about getting it but after this issue I will never look at another phone that doesn't have a removable sd card...
I think a key thing to note here is that you are flashing software that has been altered by someone you don't know and you can never be sure that things will work out. There's huge risks associated with rooting/unlocking your phone. If there wasn't HTC would warrant your phone regardless of what you do.
If you don't have an answer to the question "What will I do when I brick my phone?" don't root. Whenever modding anything, consoles, phones, set top boxes, I always assume that I will render it unusable. If that doesn't sit well with me, I don't modify it. That should be the general rule of thumb to follow.
