Galaxy S3 owners, convince me! - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Alright, I need some convincing. I want to know why I should get this phone over say, the Galaxy Nexus, iPhone 5, or the Razr Maxx HD.
I would love to hear what everyone has to say so give me your best shot.

Convince yourself. It's pointless for us to tell you to buy something. Go in a store and test out all the phones you're considering. You won't know what you'll be happy with till you do, trust me.

It all depends on what you want out of the phone, like others have said, try them out for yourself. You will just have to wait on the iPhone 5 and Razr Maxx HD.

Well IMHO, the iphone screen is still too small.
The MAXX HD isn't a bad choice but the bootloader will be locked I would think.

I can list some of the reasons that I've switched away from all Apple products and settled on the S3 and N7 for my daily drivers..
* 3.5 - 4 inch phone screens too small for my taste (love 4.8 !)
* Real multitasking in Android
* Widgets
* Superior notification system
* Standard USB charging and data connection
* Ability to copy files to/from device with regular pc file managers
* Sideload any app at will
* Can create/run my own apps created with free open source tools
* Can load any keyboards I wish (Swype, Swiftkey, etc)
* Can deal with a wide array of email attachment types
* Haptic feedback when desired
* NFC and Wi-Fi direct
* Choice of numerous high quality launchers
* Much higher level of customization in general
* More choice for many classes of app, Google doesn't block
"competing apps"
... and best of all, NO MORE ITUNES !! =)

What's the difference between android and iPhone multitasking. Cause my gf iPhone I can hold down the main button am all the apps pop up. What makes ours more advanced? Really want to know to shut up my sheep friends.

I need convincing that I can get superior battery life on LTE with this. Coming from a GNEX and HTC Rezound where I could only get ~1hour screen time on LTE and 2 on wifi. RAZR sucks and iPhone is apple.

On my Galaxy S3 I could be listening to music (with any music app), be logged into an irc server, connected to a Teamspeak server, logged into my pc at home via RDP, watching a video using pip, and composing a text message all at the same time. All apps would be updating and playing in real time.
The iPhone 5 can't even come close to pulling that off...

Not your fault for interpreting things that way from the above, but it's not exactly like that for iOS 5 multitasking:
. . .
When you press the home button, the app moves from Active to Background. Most apps usually then go from Background to Suspended in a matter of seconds. (Suspended apps remain in the device’s memory. . .
If you launch a memory-intensive app such as a game, iOS will start to purge Suspended apps from memory . . .
But iOS allows apps such as Instacast, which have time-intensive tasks that can run in the background, to ask for a reprieve. The app declares its downloading of podcasts as a “background task.” This allows Instacast an extra period of Background running, after I hit the home button, to complete its downloads.
Instacast doesn’t have all day. An app gets about ten minutes of Background running time before it is forcibly suspended by iOS. . .
Five classes of apps—audio, GPS, VOIP, Newsstand and accessory apps—and some built-in apps such as Mail may run indefinitely in the background until they complete their task.

So, iOS 5 allows multitasking - with various boundaries and restrictions compared to Android OS, IMHO. In general usage, you'll probably tend to see more parallel tasks running in a typical Android phone, depending on how demanding or diverse the attention of a user tends to be.
How effectively iOS manages those various tasks vs Android's multitasking scheduler is a different story, though . . .

I went and played with a S3 at a store today and it was very very slow. Then in went to another store and played on one and it was lightning fast. The other one must have been loaded or something. I was very impressed with the S3. If it didn't have the theme it has, I'd consider giving up my gnex for it.

New iPad in the house

My wife has never embraced anything in the technological realm but when all her girlfriends started getting iPads, she felt like she was missing something and decided to climb on board. I actually encouraged this because I knew that she would become addicted to the usefulness of a tablet in very short time. That would bring an end to the evil looks I get every time I pick up a new toy such as my GTab.
We picked up the New iPad today. I compared it side by side to the iPad 2 and while the screen was better, I did not see a huge improvement in everyday usage. Sure, movies and photos looked a little better but all the other apps displayed about the same to me.
This is our family's first iPad so a lot of this stuff is new to me. On the negetive side, it is clear that the closed environment that defines Apple makes things a lot less fun and can be limiting, On the other hand, I have to admit that this thing is smooth as silk. Even better, it integrates with other Apple devices easily and seamlessly. We both have iPhones so sending free texts and making Facetime video phone call between the phones and the iPad is really easy and fun. I did not realize that you could make free video calls between Apple devices without using any 3G data as long as both devices are hooked up to WIFI. Very cool.
It will be a while before I can provide a real comparison between the New iPad and my GT 10.1 but I do have some first impressions. One thing that Apple has always been able to provide is a useful device that simply works... period. The new iPad is no exception.
On the other hand, some of the apps that I rely on all the time, such as a GPS app that does not require a 3G connection, are not currently available for the iPad. If you have a WIFI only device and cannot use it as a GPS, that is a big negetive.
Also on the negetive side is how the New iPad heats up while in use. This device will absolutely require a case on the back side to dissipate the heat. It is unclear to me at this point if the different form factor will produce a less enjoyable viewing experience for movies and for reading ebooks but the shape is certainly something that sets the iPad apart from the GTab.
More later.
Bob
no SIRI on ipad3 either.
How stupid
Apple does SUCH a good job at building the hardware & providing software updates. But sucks in terms of OPEN-ness.
Samsung cant even get ANYONE ICS. phone or pad. its turning into a giant joke
I've had a few mobile Apple devices before, and they are indeed smooth as silk. I personally wish Android was just as smooth, not because I care, but because that's how average users judge a device. (not really sure why)
In my opinion much more people would choose Android over Apple if the animations were stripped out, and they made their decision purely based on the features given. The only thing I ever liked about Apple was how you could keep your devices in sync, but now that Google Play is out Google gains a win in that category as well. (keep in mind I hate iTunes, it's a POS on Windows)
iPads are pretty entertaining though, I've seen some people pick them up just so they can swipe between homescreens. lol
Umm, maybe post this in an Apple forum?

I had been wondering how it'd compare... Thanks for the thread.
Just curious, how does the 10.1 display fare against the "revolutionary" ipad3 display?
ICS will soon be rolling out for the 10.1 and it will be as smooth as butter~
Currently running ICS on my GS2, it is amazing - as smooth as IOS but alot faster!
Currently on the 10.1v which is running on normal TFT LCD, im thinking of comparing it with the the 10.1 PLS/IPS LCDs... it's a great tab but i just feel deprived of pretty colours...
Thanks for the comparison. Apple makes good products, and they certainly have the marketing down.
I thought this was kind of funny.

I know that the iPad screen is better but the GTab is still pretty darn good. Based on my observations, the GTab screen is probably somewhere between the older and new iPad. Please keep in mind that there is no noticeable difference until you get into viewing photos or high-def movies.
If it were me, I would not have spent the extra money for the New Ipad, choosing instead to pick up a discounted older model if I had to have an iPad. I cannot see much difference between the new one and the iPad 2.With my wife, there is the "Coolness" factor to be considered so that is the direction we went.
Those of us who have gotten used to the freedom that rooted Android tablets offer can sit back and smile knowingly when the iPad fanboys and girls go all giggly about this new version. While I was forking over $540 for my wife's new toy, I asked the very helpful girl at the Apple store if there was an app for the iPad that would turn it into a GPS device that would work when not connected to WIFI or 3G. She said no and then gave me an incredulous look when I showed her the CoPilot app running on my GTab.
Apple products are great but it would be a mistake to make the assumption that they are always better than the competition. If my wife asked me to trade my GTab for her new iPad, I would have to turn her down.
Just one guy's opinion.

As much as I adore my Gtab its the lack of quality tablet apps presently on android that let's it down, the openness of Android is far superior than the closed eco system of iOS but jailbreaking it allows some extra useful tweaks, had an iPod touch before and jailbreaking it opened it up a little with customisation of icons and such.

I've really been looking at doing the same. It's hard to get decent opinions because most people say it's bad but have never even seen one irl. One of the big problems I have is it will probably never see a custom rom besides root. It's also a rather old phone but it can still play pretty much any game and handle anything. I played with one at verizon and it had some lag but I'm not sure if it's the launcher or not. Kinda bugs me also because I know I'll lose the stylus and it's just a normal stylus you can buy off amazon for like $2 (nothing like a s pen). I will probably buy one to try it, I can see myself possibly loving it or totally hating it, I doubt there a a middle ground.

If you're into getting a bigger phone, I would hold for the Galaxy Note II. It's coming to Verizon, and is likely to see custom roms. I highly doubt the Intuition will see much. The phone seems solid, but LG has lately had problems with keeping up on Android updates (I'm looking at you, Spectrum). Samsung, while not perfect, shows more promise in rolling out updates.

Yea I'm really thinking about the note 2 as well but the format of the intuition makes it awesome for emails, Internet, pdfs ect. The only only place it lacks is watching videos, and it's S3 cpu which is like 2 years old already I just ask myself how often do I watch videos on my phone, not a ton how often do I email look up things on the Web? Probably 200+ times a day.
I probably still won't get it but I'd love to see them make one (and release it in the us) with better specs and fore thought across the board and I'd be on it

THANK YOU! At least one person said it.... If you cannot do anything to a phone besides rooting it then it won't be in my hands.... I have to have full control so I can optimize every aspect of my phone cause we all know the manufacturers won't and Verizon DEFINITELY won't! The LG is a pretty giant leap back so I would wait for the Note 2 or the possibility of another Nexus device but def do not go backwards... (Just my opinion)
If you don't really care about ever using a custom ROM then go ahead. Otherwise I believe the SGS3 has it beat in every category.
I wouldn't. The single biggest problem with the phone is the aspect ratio. Every single review points out how awkward the phone is with a 4:3 ratio.
I would NOT do it.
If you want a phablet, wait for the Note 2. I highly doubt many devs will work on the intuition. You'd get better development off the droid x2.

Samsung Galaxy S3
Intuition has terrible battery life and an even worse camera. I do like the design but there's absolutely no way I'd trade my S3 for one. I'm also waiting on a phablet worthy of ditching my S3. Going to be the Note II probably. Not to mention Samsung has a ton of great tablet/s-pen features that can't be found elsewhere. One last thing is the stylus has no built in holder. You have to carry it separately. Deal breaker right there for me.

I forsee alot of people not getting the next nexus if thats the case.

leaving Android for .....iPhone...??

I might get alot of heat over this but I need help.
I really love Android but my main issues:
1) battery life - I am not even getting a full day out of my phone. 1000's of apps are great but if they suck the battery - what good are they?
2) email - Android is part of Google yet their Gmail app literally is garbage. The stock email that came with my phone is a shade better - wtf...? Yet Iphone users seem to have no problems.
I HATE Apple but I also need a phone that is dependable. And I know, it isn't going to be like my Crapberry where I could go up to 3 days on one charge but honestly, this being my first Android phone......I am starting to wonder.
If you can upgrade your phone, try something like GNote 2 or Droid Razr Maxx HD, they've got good battery backup.
Btw I don't find any flaws in the gmail app..
If you don't want to upgrade your android, then maybe try mugen power batteries, they have more mah capacity than stock ones

Iphones battery life is terrible.
I'm pretty hardcore into Android. I donate all my spare time to either supporting or developing custom Android software.
But I have to say, if you want a phone that just works right out of the box, the iPhone may be a good choice. I carry a Rezound and iPhone 4S as my two daily drivers.
The best way I would tell you to decide is that if you think you want to jailbreak the device, don't even bother with an iPhone and go ahead and upgrade to a better Android phone. The iPhone runs great if you just want something to take out of the box and be ready to go using it bone stock. If you have any thoughts of modifying things, which require jail breaking, I think you're doing away with the iPhone's big strong point.
Sent from my Rezound using xda premium
The problem is that I am not a heavy user - just texting back and forth to my wife everyday at work. I have even turned off getting emails during the day since I am in front of the computer - no need for them to come through on the phone.
So for what little I use it for I am a little disappointed.
I am not into jailbreaking or anything like that. I did, however, change the launcher from Go Launcher to ADW - will see if that had anything to do with battery issues. Charged last night - took off charger at 615am checked sports scores and sent 3 text msgs - battery is at 93% as of 830am.
What Android phone are you disappointed with? It's most likely the phone, not Android per se.
And if you're not a 'heavy user' and just need a phone for a phone, why get an iPhone?? Just get some dumb phone...

try the Nexus devices (Nexus 4), stock Android and i love the Gmail and Email apps on here. you can try running CyanogenMod if youre confident in doing so, to get a feel of stock android on your S2 if you think its appealing before making any purchases. but if iPhone does everything you need and has all the apps you need, then go for it.

Agreed-- i got so tired of the Motorola/Verizon bloatware and waiting forever for OTAs. This is what kills Android, not the OS itself. Remedy is to go full delivered on the Nexus devices or just install Cyanogen if you don't have one (like me).

Maybe I am just used to Crapberry which lasted almost 3 days.
Is there a launcher that is the best when it comes to better battery life? I am on my second day using ADW Ex but too soon to actually give a fair assessment as of yet.
EDIT: I see you're using a GS2. My fiancee has one, hates it. The battery is crap too. Your issue is hardware dude.
My AT&T Galaxy Note 2 lasts me 2 days and gets 5+ hours of screen time on that huge 5.5" screen. I'm sure you know, but there are a bunch of other email clients in the Play Store, maybe you'll find something better there?
I agree the iPhone is stable and reliable, but it doesn't do everything. It's boring IMO, thats why I switched over after owning four iPhones. Oh and the battery life isn't great, I wouldn't get your hopes up. You'll probably still be charging nightly.

So email is one of your 2 main concerns but you have it turned off all day? Why do you think the gmail app is literally garbage?
As for battery life, have you looked into extended batteries? As many people have already stated, a new battery is much cheaper than a new iphone.
I keep the sync turned off because everytime the phone synchs for new email it pulls battery. Also, Gmail has this stupid conversation view! Like come on! I cannot stand conversation view and should have a choice for the view - its Android and Gmail is part of Android! So a little frustrating.
I don't think I would ever go to Apple for anything but I think I am/was just frustrated.
I have 2 yrs left on my phone (on 3 yr contract with Telus) - maybe investing in the higher power batteries is the way to go. What should I look for in the battery so I get my money's worth and not get ripped off..?
I've went the opposite way.. I've went from an iPhone 4S to an ASUS Padfone 2 (64 GB HK version - currently running ICS as the JB OTA isn't due until end of December!).
I've had iPhones since the first one was launched and have had the original iPhone, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.. for me there wasn't enough of a leap forward in the 5 to entice me to it and the 5S is rumoured to be coming out before H1 next year - so I had a proper look round with an open mind and had a proper play with almost every phone currently on the market and the Padfone 2 ticked all the boxes!! (I was previously thinking about getting an iPad as well!) so ended up killing two birds with one stone.
There's a bit of a learning curve having come from iOS6 - but nothing really major - it's all fairly intuitive and I can honestly say that it would take something REALLY special from Apple to interest me in going back as they're quite a bit behind on the hardware I've got now! LOL!..
I had an original iPhone then a 3g. When the 4 came our there was just nothing new or different to it and I could not sign a 2 year contract for a phone that already bored me. So I got a galaxy s captivate. There were definatley more bugs on stock than the iPhone but the openess of android kept things interesting. After a year my company bought me an iPhone and picked up the tab for my cell bill. I sold my captivate and got an I phone 4. It was a major downgrade for me in nearly every way. Personally I feel if you have owned one iPhone you have owned them all. Only thing that has changed is speed.

Tablet Or Phone?

Which do you prefer?
I Have a Kindle Fire HD, and a Samsung Stratosphere, but I personally prefer tablets over the regular android phones..
What your opinion?
{This is just a little question I had}
Depends on what I want to do.
If I want to talk, I prefer a phone
I vote phone, because i hate the tablet style and functions.. :/

Was about to say the same thing! Yeah, I have a Kindle Fire (1st gen) I moded (currently running CM10.1 w/4.2.2) and I prefer viewing & interacting with content on it because of the screen size compared to my phone which has a 4.3 screen. Though I have to admit, 4.3 is the biggest I've had so far and its not necessarily a deal breaker. Like votinh said, it depends what people use their device for most of the time. If you need more of a phone, then the phone. But if you're playing game/reading stuff/creating content a tablet in most cases is preferable.

Ha, good one! But if you want to play or watch a youtube video, tablet.
Phone portability and the great screen on my GS3 make me say phone! Though I do love using my Nexus 7 too
i vote tablets so these are useful than phones
of cource tablet
I have both and wouldn't give up either for just the other unless replaced by some other better suited device entirely.

Yeah i agree
I actually considered just having a 7" tablet, no phone. I might do it if US carriers actually support it. I got a phone simply because I didn't feel like dealing with the workarounds to get a tablet working as a phone with GV+data only.

Why not both in one yeaah I mean this beast phablet

How about fonepad or padfone
Honestly, I can't see how one is better than the other, as they are for completely different uses. Phones are way more portable, usually in your pocket the whole time. If you are bringing your tablet, that requires bringing a bag, and using it requires more than just pulling it from your pocket.
Personally, i mostly use my tablet as a leisure computer for browsing the web and watching movies either when lying about at home or travelling long distances via plane or train, but I always keep my phone with me and use it as a social media device on the go, or quickly checking news.
Tablets and phones in my mind aren't mutually exclusive devices, rather different devices for different uses. Although if I had to choose to give up my smartphone or my tablet, I would pick my phone any day.

i would say a phablet like the note2 or wait for the note3 unless your wanting something with a 10inch screen and keyboard like the transformer prime tf800 or something then you want the tablet but in the end its all up to you

I certainly agree with Vegost. In addition you should consider the battery life. Phone will have at most 1 day battery life (if you wanna do tablet stuff on it, which means screen on most of the time), whereas tablet will have more battery life.

Need help deciding.

Hey everyone. I know this has been beaten to death but I'm having hard time making a decision.
I have had an AT&T HTC One for the past week or so. I'm very happy with the phone and have had really no issues. I'm running 4.2.2 in it and am happy. Problem is I am seriously considering switching to the s4.
There are some features the s4 offers that I really like. (multi-view, flip to ignore, etc.)
I had One X switched to the s3 then to an iphone 5 but missed android so came back and got the HTC One. Like I said I like the one. The button layout doesn't bother me although I do like the physical home button on the S. The speakers are awesome and the screen is very nice.
I just don't know what to do. I still have time to swap it for an S before my 14 days expire but don't want to regret switching.
Opinions???
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
If you have 14 days to swap HTC one, then I am sure you will get some time for S4 too. I would say try both and keep the one you like. Ihas HTC one X, swapped it to get S3 and now using S4. Huge difference from S3 to S4 in screen itself. I played with HTC one too but IMO S4 has better screen. Also the so called gimmicky features are actually useful in S4.
Well here's my take on the two devises. I had the One for about 12 days before returning it before the 14 day exchange and got myself the GS4. Let me start by saying the One is a great phone but it has some downfalls especially after using the S4 after the One. The S4 IMO is superior in every way but 1. The build quality on the One is better but even with that I do prefer that the back is easily replaceable because you can replace the battery and Micro SD card also replace the back cover itself if you scratch it up or damage it on the S4. So even with the 1 downfall that the One has over the S4 it is still arguably not a downfall for some. As far as features go the S4 hands down has the Crown on this. Yes some do call them gimmicky but I find them to be very useful. I do not use all of them but do use most. The beauty of this is try them all and simply turn off the ones you don't want to use. I find myself using more of the features the more I use the phone. For me the S4 without a doubt is the better phone. But that being said my opinion and preferences of a phone may be different than yours, so I would recommend to do what I did and what viny2cool mentioned before your 14 day exchange ends, return it and try out the S4 for yourself and then decide which phone is better for you.

Wait, "WHAT"
They are so evenly matched its a very hard decision, one that you personally have to make. Ive been back and forth and own both. However, the biggest deciding factor FOR ME is the removable, swappable, faster charging battery, and the sharper camera in the day time. Im not a night owl, so I wont benefit from the Ultrapixel milarky. Usually when I take pictures its in middle of the day, outside and the s4 comes out much better in that scenario. I like HTC Zoe and the video highlights it automatically makes, but im sure someone will make something similar and sell it for 99 cents in the play store.
You just need to prioritize what YOU value most in your device, and then figure out which one doesnt match up as well.

Trying to save OP a few $$ on restocking fees. He's going down the same road as last time, from One X to GS3 to IPhone 5. It's going to happen again so that's why I said just wait for the 5s.

Nope, I meant the IPhone 5s coming out later this year.
Don't forget now that we have the bootloader bypass by djrbliss the amount of roms to choose from are endless. So many dev's and so many roms to choose from, it's awesome! Played with the HTC One for about an hour. It's a great phone, I was just never a fan of Sense and HTC. So I was a little biased when I got my S4. I came from an atrix 4g, HTC Incredible, s2, note 2, s3, and now the s4. Definately the best phone I've ever had. All my previous devices I hated stock tw based roms. But just the s4 features alone along with xposed modules and 3minit framework it has rendered cm/aosp no longer needed for my needs. I would say try it out and if you don't like it then exchange it back. At least you won't having it stuck in your head whether or not you should have made the change or not.

Ok, but you said, "Problem solved." Yes, I suppose one problem would be solve...but on the other hand there would be a new problem: he would have an iPhone. And that's a huge problem.
I have a GS4 and I'm a big fan. That said I had a One for about 12 days before i returned it for the S4. The camera was my biggest gripe. If you're taking pics of something within a couple feet it's pretty good but forget about zooming. I use my camera on my phone a lot so I had to make the change. The one is a great device but I think I made the right choice in the long run.
Thanks everyone. I swapped it out for the S4 today.

I didn't want to make a new thread, so thought I could ask here. But does the GS4 have SVDO? I'm thinking about switching from Sprint to AT&T. How is the GS4 compared to the GS3? Only problem with the GS3 to me is the screen is too wide, is that an issue with the GS4? I haven't seen one in person yet.

The screen is technically wider on the S4...the whole phone is essentially the same size as the S3 though, so if you have a problem with the width of the S3, the S4 isn't going to be for you.
Both are great phones. If the One does everything you need then keep it.
