I have some kind of a brightness problem. When I set the brighness to 100% it seems that it just goes up to ~70% and no more. I am sure it should be brighter, now i can't see anything in daylight. When I change it to 0% I can barely see anything even in a dark room.
Even 4ext recovery and boot animation is very dark. I am running bruce's cmx.
Can anyone help?

If it fades in and out over time, it sounds like a dying LCD to me. If it's steady but dim, I dunno.
Steady but dim. It seems no one knows anything about this. I tried rebooting, wiping, changing settings but no good.

I found a solution! I previously tried taking the battery out many times but no luck. Now I tried taking the SIM card out, when I replaced it - bingo! screen is back to normal. I have no idea how they are connected.

My thoughts exactly. But I am sure it was no coincidence. I tried everything else in the past week, but only this worked.
the best way is to set it to auto!!!

Hello, I have an issue with screen - it is very dark and it is even twice as darker as it used to be, and its just unusable
I don't really know why it is so - it can't be a physical damage, because I've been using this device for 3 months and never dropped it. BTW such issue was 3-4 or for times before and was cured by rebooting - now it doesn't help and even charging phone doesn't solve this problem.
I've been using the ROM - Cognition (some of the latest) and will try to flash back to stock, maybe it will solve my problem
Have you guys had such issue?
Have you tried changing you brightness settings?
after unlocking the screen slide your finger over status bar at top or where it should be if u could see it and see if that works.
lol, I know how to change brightness of the screen) but that's was awful, very dark screen and seemed like broken. after charging to 100% now it is fine, but I afraid I will have the same issue in the future

Has anyone noticed that the HTC Sensation's screen continues to change it's brightness automatically (in a bad way) continuously? I will set it on auto brightness and if I open the camera or go outside and it's really bright, it will change from auto to full brightness and won't dim unless I alter the settings again.. Bug? It's annoying.. Is there a fix? If not we need to notify HTC for a required update.
This really should have been posted in the "General" section instead of here, maybe a mod can move it...
I have noticed this as well. What's a little more annoying is when it dims down it doesn't do it gradually like my HD2 did (and many other HTC devices). Instead it goes from bright to dim very abruptly and tends to jump back and forth often.
I actually haven't noticed this at all. Got my Sensation yesterday. I will keep my eye out for it now, but maybe it's a bug...

Does yours gradually get dim when the screen is about to turn off or does it adjust abruptly?
I agree, I was playing a movie on Netflix app and it looked great. Then whammo screen went dim and it looked to dark

Not that I'm aware of, my HD2 gradually gets dim which is nice. The last device I owned that did it this way was my HTC Blackstone (HD).
Pretty sure its a feature of the auto brightness. It adjusts to its surroundings. I uncheck mine and set the brightness level to where I want it so it doesn't do that.
Mine sometimes abruptly changes too. My MT4G was a LOT smoother with screen brightness changing. Yes it is annoying when it happens.
Mine dims as smooth as my girlfriends butt. But when i installed juicedefender it jumped instead. Had to activate screen dimming in troubleshooting for it to go smooth again. Also it doesn't go as low without juicedefender

there's a thread in the general forum discussing this. it has to do with the widget not knowing what to do on qHD. search for the thread there since I'm too lazy right now to find it & give you the link directly
Isnt Auto Brightness supposed to do just that? Automatically change the brightness? The thing is in a lot of custom roms it never works properly but that's how it should work. It uses the light sensor..In lower lights it will automatically dim, the lower the light, the lower the brightness will be. in brighter lights it increases the brightness so you can see the screen. So if you're inside and it's dim and step outside into the direct sunlight of course it will become brighter and it will seem like a drastic change because you just made a drastic light change. If you had made the change from being inside to outside and the light gradually got lighter the screen would still get brighter just not as quick
EDIT: opps nevermind. I misread the OP. I didnt see the part where he said the brightness wouldnt return. lol reading too many threads at once.. lol

I have three stock HTC Sensation 4G's in the family.
Initially, I thought my wife was messing with the settings which is why the Auto settings for 'display brightness' was constantly getting unchecked. I asked her about it and noticed that the same thing is happening on all three phones.
So looks like this is a bug on HTC's side. I am already peeved that it's 3+ months and there's no sign of 2.3.4 with Google Talk video yet.
No idea if this is a ICS custom rom thing, but I remember it happened on stock as well.
When trying to install an .apk from sdcard (sideloading), I get the PackageInstaller confirmation window. Sometimes the right side where the OK button is, is non responsive (left side on Cancel can be clicked). After some trying, it works. Now, I have no idea what causes this, but it's ****ing annoying and seriously makes me want to throw the phone up the wall.
Anyone else noticed this ?

Hm, I've got Lux installed (manages lowest auto-brightness setting, because stock ICS is too dim). Perhaps that could be the issue. I'll try it out, thanks

I'm the developer of Lux. PackageInstaller shouldn't have any issues with Lux installed provided you haven't turned off 'compatibility mode' in settings.

I tried uninstalling Lux and responsiveness was suddenly back, it recognized the touch everytime.
Compatibility is on -> screenshots
When I restored Lux back again, the responsiveness went back to nonconsistant, sometimes it works fine, mostly it ignores the touch.

You might have to wait a couple of seconds before Lux disables itself. Lux needs to poll to check the current foreground app and disable itself. It polls every 3 seconds, unless it has detected the same app a few times in a row, in which it slows polling down to 9 seconds.

No problem. I wish there was a cleaner solution, but alas the Android API doesn't provide an intent which warns apps that a secure view is being shown.
Really Android should be drawing secure fields above everything else, rather than disabling the view - whoever thought that was a good idea isn't very intelligent.

Yes I have noticed this, when I'm on the web its really buggy and annoying, especially when I'm in my bed, it goes super bright screen. Its got to be a bug.
Try Quick Settings by halfbit. I'm using it for that since my phone arrived and never had problems. What doesn't mean there could not be a hardware problem.
got the same problems with auto brightness.brightness is going up and down while using the phone.i'm done with this phone.after wi-fi disconnections, random reboots and annoying switch between 3g and hspa i will return this phone...sry for this very nice hardware but htc really failes with the software
Here's a mod for dimming the capacitive buttons (you know, the 3 buttons at the bottom of your phone) which I feel are way too bright at the default settings.
To use this mod, your boot.img requires init.d support (most ROMs for the One X have this already) and obviously custom recovery to flash the mod.
The mod works by setting /sys/devices/platform/msm_ssbi.0/pm8921-core/pm8xxx-led/leds/button-backlight/currents to "1"
Installation:
Download the appropriate file below and flash via recovery:
Dim capacitive leds: http://www.androidfilehost.com/main...ge/KingCobra1X/Tweaks/Dim_Capacitive_Leds.zip
Turn off capacitive leds: http://www.androidfilehost.com/main...ngCobra1X/Tweaks/Turn_Off_Capacitive_Leds.zip
Stock/Default capacitive leds: http://www.androidfilehost.com/main.../KingCobra1X/Tweaks/Stock_Capacitive_Leds.zip

I'm pretty sure you just remove the script from /system/etc/inid.d/
Does this turn them off completely or only slightly dim them, so that they are still visibly lit but just less so?

To go back to stock navigate to system/etc/init.d and delete the file named 50DimLeds and reboot and you'll be back to stock

OP UPDATED: Added option to turn off capacitive lights and another to restore to stock/default settings (deletes 50DimLeds file)
Thank you for this mod. I use my phone as a bedside clock at night and the capacitive buttons stay on all the time. Glad to have something that will turn them off because they are too damn bright.
Well, this is odd. I'm noticing that my lights stay on all the time now...even when the screen is off and when it's obviously bright enough for them to turn off on their own. With the screen off, the buttons ARE disabled like normal, the lights just stay on though.
I don't know whether this was a problem last night when I flashed it or not.
I'm running CleanRom DE 2.1 (or whatever the latest is) with the 1.88 kernel (though the problem existed before flashing that kernel, and still persists afterwards)
EDIT: NEVERMIND! The problem resolved itself? I don't know how or why. It was persisting through reboots, a kernel flash, everything for at least the past hour of me taking notice and now it's fine again.
Is there a way to dim only one of the buttons?
