TF300 newbie user - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi XDA!
This is very exciting moment for me and I hope i'm welcome into this new family.
Here i want to share some experience as a newbie. I just bought my TF300T (blue) yesterday and it came with ICS 4.0.3.
It was smooth, zero lag and amazing when it was out of the box. Then i went back home and downloaded some apps and meanwhile upgraded it to Jellybean.
After everything was finished, the tab boot as usual but now the feeling was different. There was obvious stuttering and lag in any apps even at the homescreen.
I was sad and frustated on updating to jellybean. But then on the next morning, i did 'factory data reset', and everything is ok! The smoothness returned and much better than ICS. i was glad i did it and now i can't be happier than before.
I'm not yet root my transformers as to preserve warranty. The transformer is the best.tablet.ever!

Well, it seems that you're not nice after all . Joking aside, I can understand OP's excitement, but yes, there are several threads related to new users/JB upgrade. Also, rooting for JB without an unlocked bootloader is not possible for the moment.

[Q] ROOT for ASUS eee pad transformer (TF101G) B80 Serial

Hi from Germany,
is there any chance to root the ASUS eee pad transformer (TF101G) B80 serial?
Thanks
http://androidroot.mobi/2011/08/26/b70-and-beyond/
OK, thanks ... i will wait, it sucks having a b80 unrootable.
In future please post any questions in the Q&A Forum.
This was clearly stickied at the top of the Development Forum where you posted your question and carries a 3 point infraction but as you are a newb (in posting terms) I will overlook it this one time and one time only.
Mark.
Homescreen lag.
Hi, im a newbie here in these forums, i recently got a new Asus Tranformer and i love it.
The Tegra processor seems quite powerful however i've noticed that when i enable a live wallpaper the transition between homescreens lags a little bit (doesn't happen with normal wallpapers) is there a way to improve performance on my Asus TF.
Also, is there any chance superoneclick works with honeycomb 3.2, or is there another easy rooting method for this device?
Thanks in advance!
Apply a custom ROM & kernel combo, and it will be even faster.
For rooting, why don;t you check this thread?

TF101 B50 WITH PRIME ROM
MOTOROLA ATRIX - ROOTED WITH GINGERBREAK
TF101 - B80 AND WAITING
I just purchased my Asus Transformer yesterday (yes, I know that the Asus Transformer Prime is coming soon) and I was very disappointed to find out that I can't root it because it's a B80. I only have 14 days to return it so if it doesn't get root by then, I will be forced to return it.
I've been using Android since the G1 days so I'm not stranger to the platform, but there is too much that I enjoy about root and was looking forward to doing with this tablet (beginning with reskinning the hideous Asus navigation buttons back to stock Honeycomb and removing all the bloatware).
I will keep my fingers crossed as I really, really like the tablet and don't want to return it. The commitment by Asus to upgrade it to ICS (and it's hardware acceleration) and the price made me finally decide to bite the bullet on this one.
New in this forum, was hanging out in the x10 section for quite a while, got a TF101 which I traded for an Ipad2.......
Is there news for the B80 root, I'm a themer, and I need to get that Honeycomb blue out of my tablet....... fast!!

Here's another option for you. No root needed.
Go out and buy a permanent marker. Then black out the bottom area where the status bar is. Voila, you've hidden your status bar.
To bring back your status bar, use acetone.

Here is the article.
There is nothing to indicate that is true. You know, like an official announcement from Asus.
Haven't checked since I want to see how nice it plays with root, but if it were out, wouldn't we be seeing more posts? I mean, I hope your right but when the only indication is an article without a link, it makes me doubt its authenticity.

Most articles are suggesting that it will come out with Jelly Bean at launch in the UK. This is probably what it's all based on.

Same, that was the first thing I noticed. Second was the massive amount of comments beneath the article. I wonder how much they are getting in ad impression revenue though
Also, yes, the OP should have done the research but no one needs to call him/her out. I'm sure they were just super excited. We'll all be like kids in a jelly bean store when it drops.
(yes, absolutely terrible pun but well worth it and accurate).
Edit: They are talking about the Infinity but it doesn't seem like it's a mass roll out yet.
I missed it the first time too.
ASUS Transformer customers are reporting that this week’s Jelly Bean update for the Asus Transformer Pad 300 has been spreading its wings a bit and is now landing on the US version of the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity as well bringing Android 4.1 goodness to the newest tablet.

Absolutely no JB for me in Canada or my sister in Miami also doesnt have the update prompt
Yup looks like 4.1 IS out for the Infinity-until the alleged, rumored, talked about, wanted, needed, sought after, elusive, secret official Asus bug free release is tossed up to all us TF700T folks that will never know when it happens anyhoo because of the no frigging OTA thingy. :crying:
I read the news on this same website last night, not sure how credible it is myself. This is just about 24 hrs old... i think it would have made waves across the android world by now if it was official, so my hopes aren't very high.... i WOULD be incredibly happy if it was released though... curious to see if it alleviates any of my tf700 concerns...

Got this thread in morning. It says that they have started rolling out Infinity JB updates
Again, no source or actual user reports. Those websites are just making **** up for ad impressions, then other ****ty sites copy those articles without any fact checking.

Will Asus fix the lag and crashes on TF700T

Im now on 5th day with my TF700T.
So far it have been mixed feelings about it.
I love the keyboard, dont think i can have a tab without a keyboard in the future.
There is also no other tablet out there that have what I want.
The thing that worries me a bit is the lag on the device. Sometimes I must wait several seconds before it responds. And this is not the touch screen, becouse when I just wait, it will do what i wanted. This is not fun when you are sufring a simple webpage.
Will Asus fix this lag in the Jelly Bean 4.1 update?
How about people that have rooted (custom rom) their devices, do they have the same issues?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using XDA Premium HD app
ummm, i dont think anyone on here can answer that question. JB is a google OS update.
Try resetting
Then check the firmware version.
The only delays I see after tapping are when web browsing.
Everything else is snappy as far as snappy can be under Android.
Are you running in the balanced mode?
First thing I did was root mine and freeze all of the useless crap they preinstall. Havent ever had any lag issues.
I'm in the same boat as the OP. Have had the tablet just less then a week. I very surprised at just how poor the performance is on this. Here are some of the issues I'm having:
-If I leave the web browser app for other apps and then come back to it, my web pages reload. It's like the multitasking fail that is present on the HTC EVO 4G LTE or HTC One series only not as pronounced.
-Some Flash heavy websites are so choppy and laggy. Scrolling is very choppy.
-The Netflix app is almost unusable. Scrolling through my queue seems like it's getting about 5 frames per second. Oddly enough, actually watching movies plays perfectly if I can manage to scroll to select the right movie
-Some games, even ones that are promoted through the Tegra Zone are very laggy.
I really want to love this tab. It's so great for me in so many other ways but I can't live with it if this is what I can expect
I'm rooted, not unlocked, stock ROM. I've been running in performance mode. I've tried with and without Nova Launcer. I've removed or frozen everything I dare to using TB. I've looked through this and other forums for tips on improving performance but so far nothing has helped. Do I have a lemon? Are these problems common? Is this what this tab is? Please help, really want to get this thing running like I'm pretty sure it can.
im going to go ahead and assume that asus had a bad batch of tf700t's go out. i had one with the same problem and i returned it, got a new and havent experienced the same problem again. so fast and snappy that jellybean will just make this tablet crazy.
Because of some problems i have with my pad i have decided to factory reset it a week ago.
Since than the experience is sooo much better. Didn't solve my problem though

Not sure what to tell you...
I don't have any really bad slowness.
Kind of sounds like a bad processor or gpu core or other hardware bug like maybe ram errors.
IMO wouldn't say these are common problems.
*Just curious does your serial# on the bottom of the tablet start with a C6 or is it C7?
No problems here, either. I haven't rooted or done anything to mine except install updates and some apps I like - nothing that alters it really. Super happy with mine. Sorry you're having problems, but maybe you should exchange it, as previously suggested.

C6. From Amazon maybe 4 days ago. Is that older or more known to have issues. I'm still well within my return period from Amazon. If C7 is known to be better it would be worth it to me to return it and buy it from a store where I can look at the serial number on the box first. Thanks for the replies... Didn't mean to hijack the thread but it seems the op and I are having the same issue.

The tablet serial number can be found on the box the tablet came in and on the bottom of the tablet itself on a sticker (on the part of the tablet that would go into the dock if you use one).
The only difference between a C6 serial number and a C7 serial number is that one was manufactured in June and one in July (the number after the C is the month it was manufactured in)....

Maybe we should start a new thread and track the serial #s and their defects. Good way to compare range of serials with defects and spot unfixed junk that might be sold as refurbished later
For my limited use, the lag and freezing was driving me nuts. Of course, I've been down this road before with the Prime. Eventually the Prime community found the tweaks and mods to make it fly, and I admit it was part of the fun to experiment and find ways to squeeze more performance and stability from the tablet.
My problems with the Infinity seem to exacerbate when RAM goes below 200k. I can see this from the Cool Tool widget. When I get below this level, the browser is generally unusable. I use a tool called startup cleaner to minimize what launches and tried to keep widgets to a minimum but my RAM seemed to always run low. Based on this same experience with the Prime, I changed the setting in developer options to limit background processes to 2. This does a good job keeping RAM above 400K, and when I do this it runs very well. No lag or ANRs, and everything seems very fluid.
This was an early temp fix with the Prime until other mods caught up, so I don't expect this to be required long term. However, the results are really are dramatic so far and enough to keep me from going the Note 10.1 route.

That's a good tweak, and one I hadn't tried before, so thanks!
If you're unlocked, I would advise you to run...don't walk, and flash TWRP recovery and then the Zeus rom v 4.0. This is a totally different machine on that rom.
There is also the trick of turning off animations in Developer Options or set the scale to .5. That helps with smoothness, too.
My advice is not to exchange over simple lagginess if all other hardware issue are ok. There is so much more that can and will be done on the software side, but if you exchange, what if you get a tab with a major hw problem?

I'm waiting for JB. I typically do the custom ROM thing with my Android devices but on the TF, I don't like the fact that unlocking voids the warranty. Given ASUS recent history with Android tablets and the weak development scene, it strikes me as not worth the risk at this time. Root is sufficient for me right now.
I will probably unlock it next year after the warranty is up.
unlock when you have a need or desire, ie reason, to. Basically, have a reason to flash to something. Otherwise, root will be sufficient.
That's basically me right now.

The couple things I have done in the past with root.
1. Browser2Ram
Improves browser performance. This is as simple as installing the browser2ram.apk and reboot, then simply give superuser access. I use boat browser and to be honest, not sure if I gain much performance on it, but feels a bit faster.
Here is the thread: http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...5-fix-browser-not-responding-browser2ram.html
2. Build.prop editing
I have done this in the past with my old two units. I felt things got a bit faster. Though uncertain if related, but after the build.prop editing I had couple episodes of random reboot, which I had never experienced. So my current unit, I have not changed build.prop and have not had any random reboot.
But if you are interested, this is the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1758160
3. Volume
If you feel the volume out put is weak even at max, you can download applications that allow to boost volume beyond the maximum. I personally haven't done this.

Further, using Titanium backup you can create and restore backups of all your apps and system data. Moving apps to be system apps so they work better. Ie maybe it was a bug but if you use the beautiful widgets weather (asus weather is waayy to big) and click one click clean it wont open on next click. pushing to system fixed it.
If you like gaming check out gameCIH the app. (Look for it in the browser, I don't wanna link and get in some sorta trouble) This app once you know how to use it allows you to cheat on games lol. Some games when they update are designed to trick the app so if you backup with Titanium use cheats then back up again go into the market and select update it usually pulls over. ie Heroes Call money for example

Why root? First Titanium Backup. Two, BusyBox.
These things or using ADB or Android's SKU, you can remove bloatware or other ware you don't want. Currently, i would suggest just freezing them unless you know how to pull or add with ADB incase you need to factor reset because it may case problem if you do a factory reset.
After that, it's more what you're into. I like Sixaxis Controller. It's a really good app to let you use a PS3 controller with some games. Great with emulators. It also lets you map out touch controls. On a side note, Wiimote works well too, but it's uses a Wiimote and doesn't requite root, but not touch control mapping for games not programmed for a controller.
If you like to get apps not available in the US such as BBC iPlayer or NFL Game Pass, MarketEnabler. You can also use to this to get apps that are specific to carriers
RootKeeper is another good one. This will let you play Google Play movies since they don't, usually, play on rooted devices.
Screencast is an excellent screen capture and screen recorder.
Rooting itself unlocks a lot. Just depends on how you like play. Unlocking, that's for the bootloader and recovery, which would be specific for nandroid backups and flashing. Thus, were talking custom firmware, kernals and some custom scripts (these is usually where unlocking features that are build in, but not turned on for some reason). As of yet, the TF700T is very limited in these things.
Unlock... THEN ask what it's good for... THAT's the noob way!
Dude, you are doing it bass akwards. You rooted, and now are looking to see what you can do, then you want to unlock, "just because" I had the Prime for 7 months before I unlocked it and only did it then because I was backed into a corner, with Asus refusing to provide fixes anyone (we went 3 months with no updates, and then they pushed out the worst update of any they had ever provided.) THAT was when I unlocked, and 3 weeks later I regretted it. there was only a couple of ROMS (the ONLY reason to unlock if for a custom rom install) and they were all, just okay, nothing spectacular. Biggest mistake I made on the Prime. Granted there are ALREADY more roms out for Infinity, but the grass AIN'T always greener. I suggest you read THE ENTIRE THREAD for EVERY custom ROM for this device (or at least the ones you think sound worthwhile) THEN, after seeing all the BS those folks are going through (or all the joy they are having... there are ALWAYS pluses and minuses) you can decide to unlock or not. remember YOU CAN unroot. Unlocking is a one way street, and if you go into a bad neighborhood, here is no return trip.
Why people are always in a rush to root and unlock, without even knowing why they are doing these things is always a mystery to me. You are exactly the type of user that ends up crying in these forums how you briked your device. SLOW THE HELL DOWN. There is no magic bullet to make your tablet perfect. Time, and reason and logic and LEARNING are what will make you tablet perfect.
EDIT... Oh yeah, do you realize that if you unlock you won't BE GETTING JELLY BEAN? No from Asus, and not OTA. You will have to wait for a developer to pull it and make it flash-able for your unlocked tablet. Unlocked means no OTA updates again. EVER. Not that the developers aren't awesome, they are, but you will have burned your Asus bridge once and for all. Still "on the verge" of unlocking? Listen, I am sorry to be harsh, but the way you want to unlock is just wrong on so manly levels, if I saved you from yourself, you may be glad later. Don't forget, sine you are rooted, if you want to KEEP root, get Voodoo OTA Root Keeper (on Play Store) - and you have to run it BEFORE applying an OTA - not after if you want to keep root through an OTA update.
I'm sorry, but I tend to disagree with the above poster in most respects. The difference between stock ICS on the TF700 and Zeus 4.0 ROM on the TF700 is reason enough to unlock your device. Regarding voiding the Asus warranty - so what - from what I've read about their warranty service, it's almost useless anyway! My recommendation to anyone who unlocks their device is to get a SqureTrade warranty instead of dealing with Asus' piss-poor warranty service. This way you are covered with warranty and get the advantages of being unlocked. For the $80 (with coupon) for a 2 year standard + accidental damage warranty, you simply can't go wrong - it gives you complete peace of mind.
That being said, I do agree that you need to be careful and make sure you understand what you are doing before you unlock. But, it's not hard or complicated to unlock or flash custom ROMs - just read up and ask questions first if you are not sure of something and you'll be fine.
Regarding not getting Jelly Bean via OTA - it's not a big deal at all - there will be flashable JB-based ROMs within a day or two of JB being released (if not sooner).

Yeah I have been doing my research n I decided to wait for jb. If jb doesn't cut for me, I'll be unlocking and getting that square trade warranty.

Just keep in mind that you can only get the SquareTrade warranty for up to 90 days after purchasing the tablet (30 days if purchased on Ebay).

With Best Buy (or any retail store) you have 90 days from the date of purchase - so you have *approximately* until October 21st....

I prefer to only root usually if I.can but Zeus is exponentially better than even a system-tuner-tweaked stock. I got constant crashes on stock and I/o problems were rampant. Voided my warranty but I can just flip it on eBay or send it in anyways if push comes to shove.

New update 10.4.4.25 released [ 1/16/2013]

Just got a prompt for a new update. Anyone else getting one? Downloading now....
[Edit] Confirmed new update 10.4.4.25. Hopefully we get some release notes soon!
Some things I have noticed: pretty zippy in terms of swiping now. The lag that we get when swiping from apps to widget screen had been reduced. Stock browser is exactly the same, still lags here and there. What have you guys noticed about the new update!?

Yup, got it here US EST. I was hopping for JB 4.2. Ugh! My TF700 had been sluggish after the previous update. For me this update has improved the performance.

Europe/Ukraine also got an update
Got it in Chicago.... will update on results.....thanks for the heads up.
ETA:
You know, i say this every update: The stock browser seems zippier. Doesnt stall at the beginning of loading the page. I cold reboot every other day so i know its not the cold reboot after the update that does it. Weird-sauce.....
Quadrant score the same, rooted/stock.
Dreaded black line remains, figures...... DEATH TO THE BLACK LINE!!!!!!
Also, had some browser f/c already. The more things change, the more they stay the same. I notice no difference in performance from this update.
Cheers all,
RL
got the update n installed it...

infinity (stock jb 4.1.1)

It appears that this build has improved over all system performance, boot, video, wifi, blutetooth, browsing, app loading and touch response. This based on my experince from the previous build.\
I could not find any additional features at the time of this post but will update when I find any.

Cool.... thanks for pointing out that an update is available.
Just check and have it and now downloading. I'm in Thailand.

Here in France, I just install it !
Visibly like others : better swipping but Stock Browser like usual ... :-/ Just hope the 4.2 for now.
And no problem with OTA Rootkeeper
Forgot to temp unroot first. Hope I didn't loose root.
New Jersey here, I Got it too !
When I got the update I thought it was the 4.2 update, but was a little disappointed when it wasn't haha. Im noticing my browser hasn't been force closing like it used to but have yet to find any official release notes. I'm not used to the whole updating process with the Asus TF700 (Shh, I'm New), but is this usually how the updates are? Has anyone heard any word on the official 4.2 update I.. I mean WE... really, REALLY, want? :crying: Regardless, I'm still in love with this tablet
-Jersey Out.
According to the Asus France facebook page, someone posted asking about this update and they said it was for bug fixes and to prepare for bringing up to 4.2
Update didn't work for me on my rooted but still locked Infinity. Everytime I boot or cold boot, it goes through the process of updating/optimizing all the apps. Once the desktop shows I get dialogs for all the background apps closing. Any app I try to start closes immediately. Haven't tried a factory reset yet though I'm not sure that will work. And if it does, I'll probably be left unrooted.
Update: Factory reset fails as I can't even get through the setup wizard as all the background processes are closing and the wizard eventually hangs. Guess I'll have to go back to the beginning with 4.0.3, root and go from there, AGAIN.

Nice, it would be sick if we got that 4.2 update sometime this week! :cyclops: I really wanna show this tablet off to some of my friends with ipads, but I'm not trying to embarrass myself because of all these little bugs and browser force closing haha
I do not understand how Asus gets away with releasing updates with no release notes. Frustrating.
Were there any firmware updates to radios, keyboard, or other stuff like that? That's the only reason I install stock images.
Thanks!
