[Q] Need help diagnosing phone! - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I am rooted and unlocked. I was running CM10 and tried to flash Lean Kernel on it (I have never tried to flash a different kernel so I have a feeling this is where I went wrong). After flashing the new Kernel, the Samsung Galaxy SIII boot logo would appear, then go away and leave the hardware keys lit up. Now I can't get any activity out of my phone other than when I pull my battery and put it back in. When I put the battery back in the phone vibrates, the red LED comes on, and I get a battery logo with a loading circle then the screen goes black. I have tried booting into download and the bootloader but gotten nothing. I have never been able to boot into bootloader using the power and volume down, I've always had to go to the restart menu. My battery was fairly low (about 10%) when I tried flashing the kernel. Is there any way to fix this?
I have a CWM backup as well as TiBu and Nova Launcher backups. Please help!

To boot into bootloader using the power + volume down + Home button.

Volume Up + Home + PWR = recovery
Volume Down + Home + PWR = download
Push and HOLD each button in the above sequence.
I think Lean Kernel is for ICS/TWiz only.
Get into recovery and restore your backup ...

Ok, so I've tried booting into both modes and it's not working. I'm thinking that in the process of my phone not working that the battery died... If the kernel is bad then the phone won't charge, correct? It's been a while since I've had my battery completely dead, is the battery with the loading symbol in it the indication that the battery is dead?

Why don't you plug in and let it charge for 3 hrs and try the process again?

I have it on a charger right now and have had it there for about an hour with no success. I'll let it sit for a while and try the process again in the morning. If this doesn't work, are there other options??
Edit: If I get a new phone, will restoring using the CWM backup restore my app data and such?

I would let it charge to full, then pull the battery, let it sit for a few hrs the give it another try. You have to call Verizon service for replacement if you can't get into recovery or download mode, probably the best way.

Ok, I'll let it charge while I sleep then try in the morning. Luckily I have the Best Buy protection plan so I can get a new (or refurbished) phone for free. Will restoring the CWM backup restore everything (app data, etc)? I'm assuming I'll need to root, unlock, and flash CWM onto the new phone.
Thanks for the help.

good luck

Help bricked loop at&t logo

Hey Guys, I was trying to flash into another kernel when the process on odin3 stopped at the reset part for a minute and it said removed an everything and was stuck in download mode on my captivate with no progress, so i took out the battery and put it back in then when i booted after the at&t logo it gave out a TV tracking looking thing and did a endless boot. The 3 button combo for download mode or recovery mode does not work I am not sure on what to do
ok slow down i had to read that 10 times, what is tv tracking thing...
what were you flashing? what rom were you?
you dont flash "into" kernels, download mode is 2 buttons, 3 button combo is recovery,
take out battery
put usb from phone to pc
hold both volume buttons
put battery back in
flash back to stock.
Yea i tried to get into download mode but it just goes straight into battery charging screen. i was using continuum 5.2.

It seems like a bad cable/usb port.
I suggest you try different one for both.

very true!
see? it helps knowing what rom/kernel is invovled!
One you get DL mode, do not use 3 button fix. Are you using a one click with bootloaders? If not, DO NOT USE 3 BUTTON FIX. If you are reflashing eclair/froyo bootloaders, verify that you have a successful flash before using 3 button fix. Never use 3 button fix with with GB bootloaders.
i tried both plugging it into a different port and another cable no go. and the vol down and power is not working
Time to get jiggy with it.

S3 Will not turn on

When I plug it into usb it is recognized but will not turn on at all. I tried to flash the paranoid rom and now it will not turn on. Please help
First of all, wrong section. This goes into Q&A.
Second, when did you buy your S III? Is it rooted? Did you unlock the bootloader? Which recovery did you use?

What about a force reboot? Power+home+volume keys for about 10 seconds.
Edit: Sorry, this doesnt work. I was thinking of my old phone.

Hold down volume down, home and the power button. See if that works.
Why did you make this thread then post it in the ROM thread as well?
You could also try putting it into recovery mode. This actually happened to me after flashing a rom that needed the bootloader unlocked, but not unlocking it first. volume up + home + power and I was able to reflash a good rom and fix it.
You HAVE to be able to get into ODIN mode. A simple ROM flash cannot **** up getting into download mode. You don't go in download mode after the phone starts to boot normally. Make sure the device is OFF and then hold down Power + Volume Down.
Try flashing this. I used to get a black screen after the Galaxy SIII startup. remove the battery for 5 seconds then put it back. go into recovery mode (press and hold volume up + home + power), mount system then flash the sign.zip. reboot and it should work. let me know if it works.
Put into Odin mode and let it charge from there for about 5minutes and turn your phone back on

Battery not charging after completely discharged

I am using a S3 HTC One S with stock 4.0.3 rom, rooted and unlocked bootloader. I was not carrying my charger with me and phone battery is finished to 0 and phone is closed. After I come home, I connect original charger to phone. Indication led is not flashing orange. I wait around half an hour. It does not flash now also. When I press power button around 7-8 seconds touch buttons blink 5-6 times and indication led begins flashing orange for 3-4 seconds and turns off. What should I do ?
Are you using CWM recovery? That's one fault with CWM, it will not charge the phone when off.
I am using TWRP. I entered recovery and reboot device from it. Problem solved but I still dont know problem.

[Q] Phone Reboots into Recovery after battery dies

Hi, Everytime my phones battery dies, when i plug it back into recharge, it always boots into recovery. I cant get it to reboot normal until it plugged in for about 5-10 minutes. I have to hold the power button for a while and finally it boots back normal. Any idea why It does that? and how to fix? Its a pain if I have to make a call after finding a charger. Any help is appreciated.

Let me guess CWM recovery? if so swap to TWRP but you will still need to leave it to charge for 5-10 minutes before it will boot and to add this isnt good to let it run out of power, it has been known to mess up and need to be factory reset to work again.
Ill try it

Yes CWM. Ill try it and report back. Thanks!
I agree with dark. I had this issue with CWM, switched to TWRP and it works perfectly fine.
But, dont let it run out of juice, the odds that it wont boot is quite high. In both my cases I had to reflash boot.img through fastboot before the device started properly.
If you dont have access to a charger, and the device is about to run out of power - shut it down! Dont let it self-die!
it happend to me , i just reboot using the recovery. No need for hard reboot.

Bricked My Phone - Please Help!

I wanted to make a clean start on my phone after flashing way too many ROM's, so I RUU'd via HBOOT using a .zip on my Ext SD card. I used Dottat's 5.0.1 file. Everything seemed to work fine. Once I got up and running and rebooted, I went back into my bootloader (vol - + power) and did a factory reset. Everything worked smoothly and I got through first boot to the setup screen. At this point I wanted to install enewman's 5.1.1 GPE ROm then upgrade to the 6.0 Marshmallow build I had just been running. I powered down the phone and went back into bootloader. I selected Recovery and pressed power button to select. Phone turned off and never rebooted. And now I can't get it to turn on at all. I've tried holding power button for a long time, power + vol up, power + vol down. I get no bump, no lights, no nothing. When I plug it in to a charger I get no charging symbol.
Is it possible that when I RUU'd I removed my TWRP recovery, then when I tried to boot into recovery it got lost? A few things that might help - I am S-OFF, and I did notice right before I tried to reboot that the phone did say it was still unlocked.
Can anybody please suggest a fix? Or do I have a fancy paperweight to gift someone with this holiday season?
Thanks in advance for your help.

An RUU unless edited will have stock recovery in it..
As to why it won't turn on - what was the battery at, could it have died? Their are some sites online to try and get your battery to charge if it dies. Try plugging into USB computer for 24h with phone off was one I read at some point. Best of luck.

Thanks @andybones, I was hoping someone like you would reply (I've been following your work since running BoneStock on my SIII - we have similar taste in stripped down OS's). There should have been plenty of juice on it, I think I was in the 60% range last time I booted. In fact, the phone was plugged into the charger when it died. Yeah, really concerning that I get nothing at all...
Anyone else have any suggestions? Thanks in advance...

What steps have you taken thus far as to rule them out?
first check out this link and try this
also check out this link about fixing the charging logic
https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/219029/Device+will+not+power+on+after+battery+ran+dry
Also could call HTC, they may send you a new device, which sucks but better than nothing.

Thanks for the suggestions. I held pow and vol+ for 10 seconds, pow and vol - for ten seconds.. I held pow and vol + and vol - for two minutes. No joy. I called HTC, they were super nice and very helpful, but unfortunately none of their suggestions helped. They had me plug it into my pc to see if it registered, had me do the pow and vol +/- for two minutes. After that, they recommended I send it in for repair. Unfortunately, since my phone is out of warranty, they said I would need to pay for repair.
I filed an insurance claim, got a new one coming Friday. Gotta refresh myself on getting s-off... Thanks again for your help. If anyone else has any suggestions (or questions), wouldn't be a bad thing to repair the phone and have a spare waiting in the wings... Is there a way to change the IMEI in case I can repair the old one? :silly:
Happy Thanksgiving, all!
