Mounting the filesystem for r/w, adb remount issues - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All I want to do is replace my hosts file with a larger, more robust one to reduce the ads I see when browsing the internet and running apps.
It seems like no matter what I do, I can't mount the filesystem on my Note 10.1 N8013 to make changes to /system. I am rooted, I have SU, and whether I use ES File Explorer, give access to root and permission to mount filesystem as r/w, or I use Root Explorer, browse to /etc and click the Mount r/w button, or I use adb remount or adb shell, su, and remount rw, I absolutely cannot get r/w access.
Please tell me someone has figured out how to make this work for the Note 10.1.

Bumping.

Did you gain root access using the root injected method. This is a known problem by using that method. The only way to fix this (temporarly) is to boot into cwm and fix permissions. This should allow you to do what you please. Also use a different root browser because i noticed certain ones like root explorer borks it again which makes you have fix the permissions again. That is why i said its a temporary fix. But ever since i started using the paid version of Root Browser (which is very well worth the 99 cents btw) I have not seen this problem pop up since.

I was about to ask the same question.
Rooted using injection.
Deleted a few apps using Root Explorer, but for some reason I had to fix permissions and reboot every time.
I used Root Explorer [paid] but the problem still persists.
I also used Solid Explorer- I can only modify once until needing to fix permission.
Anyone found a solution yet?

[Q] Titanium Backup not working after root

Thunderbolt: after rooting, I can run root manager, flash thunderbolt cwm, boot into cwm and backup/etc. However, when I try to run TiBackup or Screen Resolution, or even terminal/su - access denied, device not rooted.
Anyone else experiencing this?
EDIT: read in another thread (search was not working when I posted this originally) to go to problems in TiBackup, then update busybox...
Go into rom manager. Download SU and flash it in clockwork. Should fix ya.

You could search market for busybox and install busybox and install busybox 1.18.3 then try
Just click Problems? in the bottom right of Titanium and let it install busybox for you. I was able to do that and restore all my apps.
Seems like you solved it for you, but for future reference for others, if you're having issues with Titanium only, it could be a the busybox problem, but if other root apps give issues (like Root Explorer can't mount /system as r/w), then the issue is with su or SuperUser not being installed properly.
I had to reboot twice after rooting before SuperUser apk got the notification requests to allow Titanium and RE to get su rights. After that, no problems.
In a nutshell, if you're not getting the SuperUser pop-up request on apps the first time you run them, your su isn't working right yet.
Delete please.

[Q] BusyBox Updater Breaks Root Access

There have been a couple similar posts, but none seem to provide any help, so I apologize for creating a new one if the answer is already out there.
With that said, I recently purchased a new LG Nitro HD and promptly used SuperOneClick to root it. Everything seemed to work fine (on the first try); I rebooted the phone, SU was there, all seemed well. The first thing I tried to use the root access for was to change the LCD Density, and that didn't work - so I tried to update the BusyBox on my phone, using "BusyBox Installer". After I did that, my root access seemed to "break", by which I mean superuser is still installed, and SuperOneClick reports my phone as rooted, but SuperUser cannot authorize apps (or doesn't even try) and attempting to run an app that requires root access simply fails, suggesting that my phone is not rooted. Typically, I would ODIN the SOB and be done with it, but I cannot find any PIT files for the Nitro HD (and I am assuming that would be necessary for me to do anything with ODIN). I've also tried using SuperOneClick to unroot and reroot the device, but now it hangs on step 7 every single time.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions at all?
I believe I fixed this issue. "Super Manager" appears to use its own busybox, which is enough to open the system directory in r/w mode and delete the busybox directory from system/xbin. This seems to have restored root access, though a lot of apps are still not working for me. Still, apps are prompting for su access and are showing up in su's list of approved apps - which is more than I could get before.
Please advise - I am seeing this as well

The new MeanROM ICS uses the new SuperUser - however, it breaks root access as you mention. Please advise the corrective action. Send PM if ncessary

[Q] Reinstall system app

I'm trying to install the 4.4.1 update from today, but in TWRP it's complaining that calculator is missing (I deleted it after I rooted). I've tried reinstalling it as a normal user app, but it still complained, so I guess it has to be a system app.
I've tried dropping the calculator.apk into system/app using ES File Explorer but it says "permission denied". I then tried to push it using ADB but when I go to do "adb remount" (as it says to do here: http://www.androidauthority.com/install-user-app-as-system-app-how-to-93522/) I just get "remount failed: permission denied".
Any help please? I'm kinda lost.
Has es been set with root permissions? Does it mount system as r/w? Does it show in supersu app? Does /system/bin/su exist? What about /system/etc/install-recovery.sh? Does the .sh start the su daemon (read commands)?

Thanks for taking a look at it.
ES was set for root permissions, but did not seem to be utilising them correctly or mounting /system properly. I looked around and apparently quite a few people on KitKat are having issues with it, so I assume it needs an update. Root Explorer also would not mount /system.
I did find one file manager that would correctly mount /system as read / write, and that was AntTek Explorer Ex. I was able to put Calculator back and try to update the OTA again, but this time it found other system apps that I had forgotten I had removed. At this point I think I'm just going to wait for someone to modify the OTA update and strip out all of the checks, since that will probably be easier.
Thanks for taking a stab at it though.

[Q] No connection play store / deleting system files

So I've been having the famous No connection error on Play Store for a few months now and really want to fix it. I've read all threads on this topic and watched all tutorials. The one thing everyone seems to be saying works is deleting the hosts file from the etc folder which is the one thing I can't seem to do.
My phone is N5 and it's rooted through CF. I use Total Commander as my file manager but it won't let me delete the file even though Total Commander has root privileges. The permissions of the hosts file are set to r/w under user but read only for group and world. Again it won't let me set it to read write for the other two. I've also tried doing this through ES explorer but it's the same thing. Can anyone please recommend a way to delete the file successfully?

I personally use FX File explorer with root add-on, works perfectly out read write. Try that. Also, do you have newest play store installed, the 4.6.17 version?
I just updated to 4.6.16 today but it made no difference. The no connection error still persists.
Regarding the permissions though it seems to be a problem on a higher level as I've tried three different file managers (ES Explorer, Total Commander and Root Explorer) and none of them let me delete the hosts file. Any idea where else the problem could be?
Have you installed an app called Freedom?
No, should I?
No. It's one of the reasons why most people can't get connection on play store.
Have you tried removing the file through ADB? This guide should help you
I haven't, guess I could give it a shot but do you think there would be any difference? I'd be effectively doing the same thing manually that the file managers are trying to do. And they're failing at it.
When I try to remount the system folder in total commander it gives me a remount error so I'm wondering if it could be successful through shell.

I'm not sure what's wrong here, but there is a posibility you lost your root (dirty flashed and update or something) so you could try that. You can also try flashing supersu and see if that helps. That normally solves my root problems.
I was actually thinking that I may have lost root as well, but then I have a volume mod flashed and that still works fine, though not sure if that would be effected when already flashed. I haven't done any updates though so not really sure how that could happen. Is there any way to test whether I still have root for sure?
Oh and I already have SuperSU Pro, flashed that a few months ago.
Just tried checking whether I still have root via root checker and it says I do. Really not sure what's going on. Does anyone have an advice on how to grant rw permissions to the hosts file?
get rid of total commander, its garbage. get root explorer. also, youll probably have to flash the latest supersu, since you flash a few months ago. i know they updated their su binaries a few times in the last few months. you have to keep stuff like that current.
Fair enough. I actually just got the latest root explorer and was finally able to delete the hosts file only to find out that it doesn't actually solve the play store problem. What options do I have left? Factory recovery?

factory reset is an option, as well as flashing the factory img.
Finally got it sorted. Thanks everyone for your help.

Install BusyBox with temporary root

I get temp-root with Kingroot(locked bootlader). In some devices you can then install BusyBox, not my case because I don't have write permissions in /system.
If I install it in custom paths I've tried, it isn't detected.
Any ideas?

You cant install busybox without system write permissions and writting in any other location ( example. system/bin or system/xbin ) also requires write access
try magisk for rooting and what is temporary root, kingroot dont give temporary roots although it sometimes gives bootloops:silly::laugh:

The thing is that I would want to do that with locked bootloader (I know it's possible in some devices).
I don't know exactly what Kingroot does, but it allows me to give root permissions to the apps that request it and everything seems to work except writting in system partition. When I reboot, that "root" disappear, that´s what I thought was called temporary-root.
However, I can write in directories like "/","/storage", but if I install BusyBox there, apps that require it seem unable to detect it.
