I am currently on stock rooted with stock recovery. Does the update just break the root if it goes through and is that it?

Does the 4.0.4 update unroot me or brick me? Anyone rooted test it yet?
I am currently running official 4.0.3
No clue. Not sure if anyone has attempted it. If you have CWM installed then you could do a nandroid backup, update, and see what happens. If you only lose root, then re-root. If you brick, restore backup. You could then restore to stock, update to 4.0.4 then re-root if you felt so inclined.
Or just install EOS nightlies and enjoy ICS a little more.

Went back to stock using Odin. Relocked boot with Ez unlocker. Still no update. Are they rolling this out slowly?

That must be the case. My wife has a bone stock S3 and no update as of about 4pm today. I went ahead and rooted her phone and froze the FW Update app just to make sure she didn't get the update. Will update the radio later if everyone says it's better than existing.
Im bone stock rooted got the update yesterday and signal seems better for me.

Can't when you're rooted. Check out vincoms stickies.

I thought the basics were that you had to the stock recovery and have all bloat intact.
New firmware checking for root now?

You can't flash a kies update using twrp/cwm. Download one of the custom recovery flashable files in the development thread and flash.

Your two options are to use Odin and flash a recovery or use casual. If you have not used Odin before then casual it's more fool proof. If you want to stay true to Samsung root then do the Odin.

OK cool I can do that my boot loader needs to be unlocked to flash CWM through Odin otherwise it will brick my device I used official phone rebels rooting method last time I rooted not sure it would work this time since I'm not on the other boot loader anymore

Just curious what would happen if this were done on a rooted upgraded device?

You can't. Fastboot won't allow the version downgrade.
I am not talking about downgrading.
What I am talking about pulling the 12.15.15 recovery from the OTA to flash.

I believe that is fine to do. It would just allow you to enter recovery again. It wouldn't necessarily allow you to take an ota successfully, I don't think. Some changes are made to /system after you root.

So why couldn't be flash the system.img to return to stock unrooted?
From my understanding the KK update completely formats the partitions during install.
