[Q] GT2 10.1 Multimedia Dock launch software - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a stock, unrooted US WiFi P5113 Galaxy Tab 2 10.1.
I purchased the EDD-D1B1BEGXAR multi-media dock which I think was developed for the original 10.1. After using a drill press to drill out the sides a little wider so the Tab 2 fits, it works great, including working with the EPL-3PHPBEGSTA HDMI cable.
Question: From reading about the dock, it appears when you plug it in, it is supposed to start up some sort of clock/screen saver that you can have it show a slideshow of pictures. But I've also seen hints that this doesn't work any more or something?
When I plug my Tab in, it starts up the "Tune In Radio" app I have installed, which seems like a rather random choice to me. I've searched through the settings and can't find any reference to any control over the dock and what app it starts when plugged in other than a checkbox deterimining if it should play a sound when connected.
How do I control what app starts when I plug the Tab 2 10.1 into the dock?
Is there some sort of app that needs to be installed to get either the clock/slideshow thingy working or to control what app is launched when the Tab 2 is plugged into the dock?
Does anyone have any information on this functionality?

If the "TuneIn" app starts every time I plug the 5113 Tab 2 10.1 into the dock, there must be a way to choose what app starts on plug in to the dock? No?

I heard back from TuneIn. They said, yes, their app is designed to start on plugin. They said if more than one app is capable of autostart, there is a place in the menus to choose which starts. Interesting, since the slide show app seems to have this capability, too, and yet I see no such menu. But maybe it's implented in a non-standard way for that app.
They have also heard of reports from users that there are apps out there that allow access to autostart options. Does anyone know of any such apps?

Hi, have you found anything new in this matter? I had the exact same issue with my new 8.9 GT, and actually the same app started (tune radio)
i
I havent found any settings for this, but then as a coincidence I found the Desk Clock app
launchbar.blogspot.se/p/desk-clock-plus.html
and after this was installed I actually got the choice to run this or tune in when i connected my Gt to the dock. I still have any new settings for this though, only have the choice of setting the default app. I would however like to have the option "do nothing" when I connect to the dock, is there anyone that have the solution for that?

Using the Nexus One while charging in the desktop dock = frustrating

So, as the title says, I have the N1 resting in the dock and charging. I want to use Google Talk so I tap the home button and open Google Talk. Between the tap on the home icon and anywhere after the Nexus One will automatically return to the clock app. I can tap home again and randomly it will again return to the clock.
Is there a way to a) disable the clock (I'll miss it, but it's almost frustrating enough to never use it again) or b) disable return to the clock app? I don't see any settings to accomplish this so it's probably some power user trick. I don't think this is occurring because the N1 is losing contact with the dock while I'm tapping as it's resting pretty solid in the dock.
Any ideas?
I guess you could put a small piece of tape over the middle pin and that should prevent it from going into the Clock app but still allow it to charge.
try dock nothingness from the market, it will let you select it and when its docked it wont open anything.

Excellent recommendation. I tried a couple of the Droid dock app and they were buggy. This app is consistent. Thanks.

That's a good idea. If I run out of options and Dock Nothingness stops working I'll look into this. Thanks.

im glad people use it haha, dumb app, i know, but somepeople find it useful, I did this once I got the dock unboxed, I was getting really annoyed of things opening up automatically.

I don't think the app will stop working because it is not a hack, it's using documented and officials Sticky BroadcastReceivers for detecting the dock, opening "Dock Nothingness" instead, however, the "Dock Nothingness" app is nothing, so it closes it self right away giving the user the illusion of the phone not really opening anything
When I read the thread topic, I was like "yeah, its damn frustrating!".
velazcod: Thanks for the app to fix this nuisance.
I look forward to the next version that does even more nothing!
Updated, make sure to go into the app's preferences -> Phone and select "Nexus One / CM5" if you are on CM5.0.3+

Oh, you need the "LEDs Hack" app, you can find it in the market.
Just received my desktop dock and the clock application was driving me mad within 10 minutes of making and receiving calls etc.
Dock nothingness is great - thanks for the suggestion....................
One of the things I find irritating about the dock is when I'm playing music through the bluetooth connection it initializes automatically and I take the phone off to send a text or whatnot it unpairs its self. Can I force it to stay paired until I turn off bluetooth?

Yes, connect and pair before docking it
I do that now, but I have to dig through the wireless menu. Is there a widget or something that will connect to a predefined device with one touch?

For some reason the dock won't allow to auto-connect when in range, it does this for other devices, like headsets....

Satechi BT MediaRemote Bluetooth Multi-Media Remote Control

I found something interesting on the Amazon store I thought I would share, I found this is incredibly useful for me so hopefully is to someone else.
this should work on pretty much any Android device but I'm posting it here as it is the only one I can/have tested it on.
I cannot post links yet but it can be found on Amazon UK under the name "Satechi BT MediaRemote Bluetooth Multi-Media Remote Control"
It's a small Bluetooth remote for iPad/iPhone/Mac and very quietly mentions Android so I decided to buy one and see how it goes as I needed something like it for my car.
Anyway it arrived this morning and I love it, I've successfully used it and I've been able to remap keys using the "External Keyboard Helper Pro" app by "Apedroid" which allows remapping of keys to media keys or launching apps.
All keys on the remote can be remapped except the wireless symbol which un-pairs and goes into discover mode.
My requirements were a remote that allows me to change tracks while driving but it also got Google now working in my car Bluetooth system. (it did not connect properly when I launched it via car voice controls)
I have now got the keyboard button remapped to switch to the maps app and the mute button to launch Google now so once Google now is done I have a button to go back to the navigation screen .
I have also been fairly successful in getting this to work with Tasker however it required a small workaround by exporting the task as an app (via Tasker App Factory) and then using "External Keyboard Helper Pro" to launch it.
My only issue with the remote at the moment is that it connects as a hardware keyboard meaning I cannot type while using it (obviously not an issue in the car though)
All this was done on a non rooted Nexus 4 on 4.4.2 so root is not required by the way.
If anyone has any questions feel free to ask, I'm going to figure out how I can bind the other 9 keys on the remote
Oh and finally if you do use the app in question and use Tasker I'd recommend exporting a Tasker task which launches the intent "android.intent.action.VOICE_COMMAND" rather than using the built in voice control key setting.
Dude!! I have totally been looking for this! I like playing podcasts from my phone while I'm working in the garage, so I hook the phone up to my stereo but whenever I need to pause it or adjust the volume, I gotta go clean up or slide out from under the car... This will be perfect!! I'm totally ordering this right now!! Thanks brother (or sister?)!!

Could you please check if there are any answer call buttons or microphones on this thing? Personally I hope not because it happens so easy in your pocket.

Which car dock app?

Which car dock app are you using? Why? I messed around with the app that ess installed on our phones and Car Home Ultra. Any others out there?
I've used Car Home Ultra (paid version) for a long time. It just works and has a lot of features.

How do you make that speed alarm feature work? I turned it on and my speed would flash no matter what speed I drove?
Car Home Ultra does seem to be pretty good. Seems like the de facto app for car docks.

I don't use speed alarms so I can't be of much help there.
Car Home Ultra. I have it set so when my motion activated Jabra Freeway speakerphone connects to my phone, Car Home Ultra starts automatically. Very nice app.
That would be such a great feature if I didn't prefer to stay connected to my lg tones when I get in the car. I'm thinking that an nfc tag attached to the mounting bracket can serve the purpose of automatically putting me in car home mode.
iBolt also do a car dock app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ibolt.carhome).
On my previous S4, my Carhome Ultra would take over the home button when docked, so that whenever I pressed the home button it would always take me back to Carhome Ultra. With my Note 4, this doesn't seem to be working - pressing home takes me back to my normal launcher. Is anyone experiencing this, or is this some configuration issue at my end?

Out of interest, has anyone managed to get audio working over a USB dock or cable?

There are several threads talking about this issue, look at the other car dock and desk dock threads in this forum for more info. The short answer is yes and no- it IS possible to get audio out over usb but only with an OTG cable and a DAC currently, and I don't believe you can do charging AND audio simultaneously, so no you can't just plug in one cable in your car. However, it looks like Lollipop will have support for audio out over usb built in as a standard feature, although details are slim at the moment. It's my hope that Samsung knew that the feature was getting built into Lollipop, and so they just didn't bother wasting the time on developing support for it in the Note 4 at launch because it'll be included standard once the L update rolls out. I have nothing to back this up, just my own personal hope Anyway like I said look at the other dock threads in the accessories forum, it's discussed in more length.
As for dock apps, I second the vote for iBolt Dock and Drive. I started using it on my s4 when I bought the iBolt car dock, and I've found it to be a very polished and well developed app. When I got the Note 4 I started looking for a new car dock app, tried Car Home Ultra and a few of the other ones that rate highly but I've found that at least for me the iBolt dock app is really everything I'm looking for, and the new version is even better. It's easy to use, looks great, and isn't cluttered up with useless junk. I know some people want all kinds of crazy functionality in their dock app, but I personally prefer to keep things a bit more minimal- just nice big customizable shortcuts, music controls, and simple location/speed data, and iBolt does that very well.
On the other end of the spectrum, if you're looking for something that gives a TON of info and is chock full of driving features, one of the other apps I tried was Ulysse Speedometer. It was definitely one of the better car dock apps I saw, and if they made it a little easier to get to all of the app shortcuts then I might have gone with it over iBolt. In my case though my car has a multifunction display, and I just don't need all the info that Ulysse shows on it's main screen, at least not on my daily commute. I may hold onto it just for times when I really want all the driving info, or when I just want a cool looking display to show off

I downloaded it for the first time last night and that is a user changeable setting in the app to have the home button go to Carhome Ultra.

Actually I've now got the home button to work correctly when docked. Basically did a factory reset, and started over. This seems to have resolved the issue.

Thanks, but I already tried that. Didn't help. I also used Tasker to force car mode, but didn't work either. As per my other post, I finally managed to resolve the issue with a factory reset.
I am having the same issue. Tried the setting that I posted above and it doesn't work for me. My phone may need a reset as well. I get a lot of force closes and hang ups in the settings menu.

In the description it states one click dialing, does that mean you can't use OK Google through your Bluetooth earpiece to dial a number or a contact?
Other thing that throws me off is they're only 79 reviews.
It look like there was a problem with his google account, look here

Android app or setting to sleep screen on keyboard unplug?

I have a keyboard and mouse hub connected to my Motorola XT1575 phone (Android 6.0) and my PC. So, am typing this question into my phone with my keyboard. I can then use a hotkey to switch the keyboard & mouse to my PC.
Currently, my phone sleeps after 2 minutes of inactivity. What I'd like is for this to be overridden when the phone detects the keyboard has been unplugged. In other words, when the hub detects a keyboard shortcut and routes the keyboard input away from the phone, the phone's screen would go dark.
Surprised that I couldn't find an app to support this. Would love to hear that I overlooked one or that there's a setting to do what I need. If not, I am a developer, though never programmed on Android, and would love to hear suggestions on how difficult this would be to code.

One word, "Tasker"
Its the best automation app on the Playstore.
All you have to do is create a profile with the different variables. For example;
Keyboard detected->Keep screen on.....sorta like IFTTT.
