I have 4.1.1-based ROM and using the default people app to view contacts. It seems skype/whatsapp decided to display their ugly head into my google contacts thus when trying to call people, some numbers are displayed twice.
example:
-----------------------------------------------------------
like I have an entry for a friend's mobile on google contacts and they also decided to put in their mobile number in skype. Thus the numbers appears twice on the stock contact app and stock phone dialer.. and I don't want this. How do I restrict Android (I suppose this is system-wide?) to retrict contact info to only those coming from google contacts.
-------------------------------------
I have set "contacts to display" to just my personal gmail account but whatsapp/skype info is still displayed. :/
thanks
ps. tried searching the net but not really sure what keywords to use and came back blank
Im running CM10 on 4.1.1, I like to just sync my contacts to Google, you can manage it from your PC very easily should you happen to have double ups you can easily delete them all with a few mouse clicks
Press your settings key in contacts, contacts to display, choose Google and sync them from home screen->settings->accounts, never loose them again. I found I lost a few contacts here and there with Titanium over time so I just use Google.
You might want to click import/export from contacts-settings to get any numbers you might be missing from your SIM card.
I don't leave sync on permanently just remember to do it once a week as I'm quite a jew when it comes to battery life.

Before I got my Captivate I set up all my contacts into gmail. I set up the ones I wanted on my phone as My Contacts, and then had 20-30 more that were pretty much just e-mail addresses in All Contacts. I synced them to my IPhone using the Exchange method, and while it worked, I randomly lost 5-6 contacts. It was a little disconcerting but I got the info, re-created them and moved on. No problems.
Now, I just synced my gmail account to my new Captivate, expecting it to work better and I seem to be constantly losing contacts! Now that I'm aware of it and paying attention, this is driving me absolutely crazy! There seems to be no rhyme or reason for it. The contacts that disappear, they all have phone numbers, some are linked with Facebook accounts, some aren't. Some were added in gmail directly, others were added either on my phone or on the Iphone previously.
When I first synced my phone I had about 107 or so All Contacts in Gmail. I receive a text from someone who shows up as a phone number in my phone, so I text back "who is this?" and it turns out to be a good friend of mine I had a contact set up for, with two e-mail addresses, two phone numbers and an address. This is a contact I've had for years, so from the beginning. Just gone.
I looked on Gmail and I have 97 All Contacts. And I have no idea how to figure out which ones are lost. Then I lose two more, I have 95. I figured out one of them that I lost and re-added it so I had 96. I just lost one more. Phone numbers and all.
What the @*($ is going on here? I just exported a backup of my gmail contacts to a csv file, and I guess I'm going to have to do this everytime they change.
Is anyone else having this issue? I have no apps or addons that have anything to do with contacts. Sorry the thread is so long, I just wanted to explain what's been happening.
I don't know if I'm losing contacts, but I do loose contacts numbers. I have had a few numbers come up as numbers only, when the person calls. I ignore these calls most of the time, because if know them, their name will show. Check my voicemail, its my answering svc. I look for the contact, its there, but no number associated with it.
In my case, it only seems to happen when I originally sync with a new phone. Ill have to start watching the amount of contacts, I guess.

I was totally surprised by this. I've already discovered at least 10 contacts that have completely and totally disappeared. Some of them disappeared before, on this phone, and I've re-added them in with their numbers and e-mail addresses. And they disappeared again. Every time I add any contact information for the time being I'm going to export it from gmail and double check my # of contacts daily. Right now I have 107 in all contacts. The worst part is when you lose them there's no easy way to figure out which contact disappeared.
What the... Me too !!!

I've just posted a new thread about the same problem i'm experiencing with my galaxy s3 (GT-I9300) and didn't notice this one.
I've having the EXACT same problem and in all the similar threats there is no solution for this, this is frustrating...
I too Flashed numrous Roms in order to eliminate ROM bugs etc...
Could a anyone assist on this ?
LG EVE?GW620 with LG 2.2 Froyo Official.
This is NOT just an LG problem as I read others have the same issue with different brands of phones.
I noticed that when I add a new contact if I do not drop down the tiny part at the top and pick Phone/SIM/Google it will default to phone. That means it does NOT sync with Google. I also can NOT go back and change the contact on the phone to be SIM or Google. Part of the purpose of having this phone is for it's ability to sync with Google.
Is there a setting to set it to default save your contact with Google and NOT phone?
*This is important because if you load up new contacts they will NOT sync with Google, so if you lose your phone then you lose your data. Part of what makes Android cool is your data is sync to your Google account so you are always up to date even if your phone is lost or broken.
I do NOT have this option to set.
I found this BUT that option is NOT there for 2.2 LG Official---see bold item
right now i have Google contacts syncing to my phone. weird thing is, when i log into gmail and look under contacts, there isnt any listed. where does google get list from? I thought logging into gmail and clicking contacts would show me a list of names, but it doesnt. I dont get it.
First:
You need to make sure you enter a new contact by saving to Google.
Contacts that are on your "phone" will not transfer to Google automatically.
You can change your default save location by:
Open contacts
Press menu touch key (key on left side of your phone)
Press MORE
Press SETTINGS
Change: Save new Contacts from: Always Ask to GOOGLE
In Google it saves your contacts under the "My Contacts" tag.
Let me know if you need any other help with this.
p.s.:
If you want your contacts on Google and your phone, the easiest way is to enter them through gmail then let sync push them to your phone. Your phone (should) join the duplicates since they will have the same names and telephone #.
anyone??? hellooooo
anyone here??
What is up the the list of contacts when using the phone or messaging? I can manage under Contacts|settings|view exactly what contacts I want to see; however, when using the phone or messaging, the Sensation presents EVERY contact without a way to adjust. In my situation I use Exchange Activesync to gather my work emails, and despite unchecking sync contacts, they all show up in my phone list.......who the heck wants to sort through a thousand contacts to make a phone call. Thoughts or ideas?
I have some similar problem. I sync with both Exchange Activesync and Google/Gmail and some of my contacts have an entry in both. In my lists of contacts they're perfectly coupled and reduced to one entry, but in the messaging app the contacts show up double again.
I already had contact with HTC Benelux, but their first 'solution' was to remove one of the entries manually. But that's no option for me. I replied to them, but they have not reacted yet.
Strange thing is with the mail app everything is ok.

To get rid of this in messaging, there are 3 options you need to turn off.
Go to messaging.... settings... general... and turn off "Show sent message history", "Show call history" and "show email address". Or a combination of the three if you'd like.
In contacts, you should check the option in settings that says "Only with phone number". As long as your email contacts don't have phone numbers, they won't show up in the contacts list.
I hope I'm understanding your issues and that this information helps.
Hey guys, so i have a problem. I know that in the contacts I can hide all the repeated contacts, meaning the duplicates that show up from google, and t-mobile, and the ones on the SIM card. I have all my contacts linked thro HTC facebook. But when I go to the dialer or to send message it shows all my contacts, so some people show up 4 times!
Is there anyway to hide all the duplicate contacts in dialer and MMS, and secondly, when I receive a message from someone it shows their SIM contact which has no picture and their name as I put it in, and not as it has been "linked"
Thanks in advance!
I am on the same boat. Its annoying cause I only want the Google contacts. Mines has both synced T-Mobile backup and Google. Gonna reset the phone and remove the T-Mobile app before I sync anything and get back to u

I had this problem and it was unbelievably frustrating when I first got this and after a few days of searching and banging my head against the wall, I found something that worked.
This is how you solve it (or how I solved mine).
1: Sync everything to Google. Edit the contact list in google (use the automatic duplicate deletion), delete useless contacts etc.
2. Remove contacts from EVERYWHERE. Sim card, phone, uncheck google sync. Your phone should then be completely empty for contacts.
3. Re-sync with google contacts. if you want you can copy it back to the SIM and you shouldn't get doubles. I think I just left it with google only but the end result is I don't have 9 different "danny's" show up when I go to compose new message because I know three of them.
Ok great, I'll try that out.. When they gave me my phone, I told the employee at the store that I didn't want the tmobile contacts, and yet, she still set it up. I hope they fix these silly thongs with the update
Try this
I had the same problem, shows same contact more then 1 time. i resolved it this way
1) Go to Contacts (App)
2) Press Menu button (2nd touch button from left)
3) Select View
4) Now select (Check Mark) the contact you want to see. in my case i unchecked all option but Google and Facebook for HTC
5) Select done.
now it will only shows single entry for each contact
Thanks
when I first got my phone it imported contacts from all over the place, including many places that I didn't want it to. It's a nice feature but I only want to use the contacts in my google account. Initially the phone found contacts on my sim, and t-mobile account. I understand in the contacts app you can go in to view and turn off the other sources, but my problem is on the phone app. When you open the phone app the first screen lists your contacts with your recent calls at the top. In that list my sim contacts are still showing. When I use the "Smart dial" feature it searches all the previous contact sources. Is there a way I can wipe all contact from my phone and just start over with my google contacts?

So you've tried People > View > Then only have your google account ticked?
Because when i do that none of the contacts from my other accounts show up anywhere else...
I did do that. And on the people screen (which I believe is just the contacts application) those settings are honored. Even with those settings set properly when I go to the main phone screen I see sim contacts mixed in with my google contacts

weird..
The only other thing i'd suggest is moving your sim contacts over to the phone, so they will show up as phone contacts, then hide everything else and see if that makes a difference.
Other than that you might have to delete/unsync all the other accounts with your contacts.
Ya, it's interesting. The people screen definitely pulls a different list than the main phone screen. I removed all contact sources from the people screen so that I see no contacts at all, then on the main phone screen nothing changed. I still see google and sim contacts.
Is there a way to delete all contacts and just start over without wiping my phone?
Well, for the love of god, don't put skype on your phone then. Skype totally raped my contacts list. I have all these random weird contact names in there now that I have no idea who they belong to. It seems that Skype doesn't like to fill out the contact info very well on the mobile device.
Who the hell is bootmomma? LOL! I would really like to get this issue sorted as well. If I find a way without sorting it by hand, I will let you know. The only other way I have found is to sync everything to google and then use the merge duplicates, then sync everything back. Also, there is an app that I use called "Contacts Cleanup" that formats all the numbers on the device to a uniform ###-###-####, which I like. Becareful when linking contacts between types, because sometimes it confuses different things. It has caused me to get numbers interchanged and stupid things to happen, especially when allowing <ahem> Skype access to the address book.
That's the best I have. Hope maybe it helps you a bit.
To wipe all of your contacts go to settings> applications & find contracts storage & wipe that.
A for skype just choose not to sync your contacts in the actual application. They'll still show in the app but won't import to the phone's contact list
Got the same problem as well! thanks for xnifex's idea I am doing it now
