So I have noticed that my sd card storage space has a lot of space occupied on it but I don't have that many apps installed on the phone. I noticed that a lot of files and things are getting duplicated. If I open my gallery, It will say i have over a thousand pictures when in reality there's only a few hundred. When opening the gallery album, it will show 1 thumbnail and then 4 blank ones but of the same file. I connected the phone to my computer and on my internal sd card, theres 4 copies of every folder and multiple picture files. This duplicating is hogging all my space. Has anyone had this issue? Im running Eaglesblood ICS build 4 on the new v21y baseband.
Yes I've had the same issue with songs and downloaded ringtones. And the copies don't even work. Can't find I fix. If you find one let me know. I'm running EGB 4 also

There is something on my phone that keeps deleting .avi video files from my SD card. I noticed when I could not find some videos I recorded that were very important so I recorded more videos just to see what would happen and sure enough at some point they disappeared and I know they were not moved or misplaced because they were too large to lose. I have also noticed most of my playlists are missing, although I may have deleted those, I just don't remember.
Is there a free app out there that can monitor my SD card for any changes and let me know which app is creating, changing or removing files? I have a lot of apps installed on my phone and don't want to remove them one at a time to see which app is misbehaving.
Have you searched your SDcard for *.avi files?
Swyped from my HTC Sensation.
Yes. I used Astro to search on my phone and when I did not find anything I put my SD card into my computer and searched with windows and found nothing.
Very strange indeed, but I have not encountered this.

Well do you know of any app that may help me solve this problem?
I had the same problem. Turned out I had faulty sd card. Since I replaced the sd card I haven't had the problem since

I am having this weird problem. Inside DCIM folder there is a folder name .thumbnails, inside that folder there is a file named thumbnaildata3. On my sensation the size of this file becomes 2.8+ GB and even more if there is more space on SD card. All of a sudden I get a message about 'no space available on sd while installing an app or taking pictures or videos.
Anybody knows why this is happening? I tried deleting it several times. But it keep coming back again and again.
That exactly happens to me! i always delete the files.....i found that an app from the market called 3D gallery was causing this for me...maybe you need to check what gallery app is causing this for you...
I don't have any other third party album app installed. It's too annoying n useless.

I would like to clean up my sd card and free up as much space as possible.
Right now i find it pretty annoying that while using a file explorer seeing all the useless folders I don't use, that apps make or android makes.
is there going to be an issue if i rename all of the folders with a "." in front of the name so that they're hidden?
I would also like to free up as much space on the sd card as possible.
right now 1.5Gb is being used by a folder called Android/Data.
I would like to free up as much of the 16Gb as possible.
Which version is urs international or att because if u buy att then you will have only 10gb available on sd card
Regarding keeping a dot to hide the folders. Ya you can use that to hide the folders but I am sure it won't help you in reducing the space on sd card .
Wait for someone with more knowledge on changing or deleting names of android and app folders because I am not sure if they cause any problems ( usually app create those folders while installation to store app data )

i have 7.8Gb free, then I have some music and pictures.
still trying to figure out if i make all of the folders hidden, while the phone still be able to find them?
and i have a folder called "android" on my sd card thats taking up 1.5Gb.
cant tell if its safe or not to delete/move.
The android folder contains data for apps you installed from the play store.
If you hide folder associated with an app, the app will likely not work properly. For most folders that have been generated by the OS or apps, I'd leave them alone. Messing with them will either break an app, or the OS will just assume the folder is gone, and make a new folder.
Couple exceptions, if there are any files in LOST.DIR, you can delete them. As long as you are confidant that none of your SD card files (photos, etc.) have been corrupted (that you may want to recover), since this is where they end up, if they do. You are probably also safe deleting any folder called "temp" or something similar. But that folder doesn't always show up.
Brand new to the skyrocket, I have tried both CM9 and AOKP and have issues with external storage. My gallery pull all my pics from the external perfect so i know the o/s is seeing it. When i use astro file search nothing shows up on my external, and when i go to play music through my blutooth, google music wont play anything and jetaudio plays but cuts in and out. Is this a common issue everyone, and is there a fix for it?
Both my internal and external work fine on aosp roms. Are you saying you can't find the internal SD?

My internal works fine.Google music recognizes music on my external but says it can't access
the files to play them.jetaudio will play them but cuts in and out.
If I open astro file manager and choose external SD nothing shows up
Have you tried fixing permissions? I always try that when something isn't quite right.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
Fixed permissions, rebooted, opened astro file manager,
Clicked on external SD,it says directory empty. I also noticed jetaudio is only recognizing
A portion of my music. I don't get it. I would normally think its a bad install,
But I do a complete wipe everytime and it does the same thing with Cm9
Are you selecting external SD from within the emmc folder? That will show as empty. To see the contents go up one level in the directory and select SDCard. That is external and emmc is internal on AOSP Roms.

Perfect.
I had the same problem, drove me to the brink of insanity, lol. I flashed another rom and decided it wasn't good so I flashed back and somehow everything worked. Not sure how but it worked.

Glad that was it. I believe there is some instructions for deleting the media db files in the CM9 thread in order to force a rescan. Try searching "media db" in there.
Thanks are great, thanks button is better

Solved-thanks for everyone's help, this is what I had to do to fix the music issue.
Uninstall music apps, use root explorer do to data/data/android.com.provider.media,delete database folder, boot into recovery, delete cache, reboot, reinstall music app

It seems a problem with android 4+ I made a goo.gle link but haven't posted much here yet oQSfA is the extension of the url. If I am erroneously posting this, I am sorry. I have the same issue. If anyone can post a clickable link it might get stars quicker. It might be fixed in jelly bean, but I don't know.
Issue 39546:Files under DCIM/.thumbnails are eating away at SD card storage
I have since done factory restore with formatting the stock SD. File is there, much smaller though 197 KB. No pictures to thumbnail, so it isn't necessarily solved. I did switch out cards (old 16GB to stock 4GB) before format and delete the .thumbnail file but that was recreated even with no pictures. I figured it may be my picasa account, but have since opened gallery. After letting more (from Picasa) picture and folder thumbnails appear than ever before my file is still small
.:banghead:
it still (6+ hours) has not grown giant. In fact its not really there. I didn't disable any of TMobile bloat like I did initially, and have the blank SD. In the process of reinstalling apps reopening gallery and checking space with storage analyzer.
I still don't like not being able to choose internal USB or external storage SD. Most apps "moved to SD card" just move to USB storage. Interestingly tapatalk appeared to move to the real external SD card as did a few others.
I doubt this will be fixed on ICS. I can hope though. It seems like the app itself needs to use the external SD directory, but the stock gallery might never be updated.
Samsung galaxy blaze 4G with stock ICS 4.0.4. All the extra TMobile apps are a pre-installed, but not updated.
I don't claim to be knowledgeable enough to know what I don't know. I always reserve the right to be wrong.
Taking pictures didn't make thumbnail file huge, but one relatively small video of 29 seconds with a 5MP camera created a 47mb file and two 3mb files in the thumbnail folder. Not huge but bigger than 10%.

finally it worked... thanks a lot bro...
for all others dealing with same issue, here is what i did... just replaced the thumbnail file with another file created with root explorer named it same as the thumbnail file n removed the write permissions of the new file created... so it wont let system write any data in it. therefore it stays empty.
