[Q] Update issues - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Jellybean update has finally arrived for the NS4G. However a couple ppl myself included have been receiving an error. With the OTA and the flashable .zip i get a status 7 error. Anyone have any clues as to why? Most people are coming from stock and still getting this error with stock recovery or CWM.

From the other thread, download the binaries and use the fastboot method detailed in this post:

[Q] i9020A updating to 2.3.6

I really hate to do this, but i've searched for a while now and can't seem to find anything that matches my situation.
i'm on stock 2.3.4, but rooted with a different kernel, boot image, and a different radio flashed. I realize that i'm not going to be able to install the update directly from my phone, but I can't seem to install the signed update file through cwm or the stock recovery I just flashed. cwm fails with a status 7 error, and stock recovery won't even let me bring up the menu to manually install the update.
i'm just wondering if I should flash a stock rom with recovery and then try to flash the update that way, or is there some other way that I could do it? I don't want to lose any data from my phone, and I would flash the full 2.3.6 rom instead, but I can't connect to the download link in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664.
once again, I really hate to do this, but I am pretty much stuck right now.
thanks

The 2.3.6 update for the i9020a was pulled by Google. There will be a new update released soon. I would wait.

GT-P6210 ICS (rooted) updating issue

Is anyone else having trouble with installing OTA updates? I just received one for stability and once it rebooted to the recovery (CWM) it failed. Would I have to remove my custom recovery then?

OTA updates can only be applied using the stock recovery. If you are on a custom recovery (i.e. CWM) then updates will fail. Only way to update will be to wait for someone to create a CWM flash able update based on the OTA update. Either that, or go back completely stock and allow the OTA to install itself

Try to apply the update manually in recovery mode. It will tell you what file is corrupt. Either out the file back or use fastboot to update.

This is apparently a known issue. You will have to manually download the updates and flash them in recovery to get to JB and keep root. See droidrzr forum for the flashable files. I went ahead and put both the updates on my sdcard and flashed them both in recovery. I tried since Monday to get the OTA with no luck. Make sure you temp unroot/restore between flashes.

Here are the links to the incremental update as well as the JB update, both flashable in recovery (once you have downgraded to ICS + rooted, etc.)

Happy rooting!
Hmm.. I just noticed that you rooted after the OTA would not download (it won't download for anyone rooted or not at this time, maybe network problem). If you do NOT wish to keep root and update to JB then you can simply use RSDLite or Motorola Utility to upgrade to stock JB from ICS. It is not required that you download or flash the incremental update if you use this method. Hope this helps.

Flashing ota error

So I flashed the official factory image for KRT160 the other day and I'm rooted with cwm touch, I tried to flash the ota for KRT16SS today and got an error "systemui.apk has enexpected errors" or something like that. Anyone know what to do?

[Q]Can't flash any kernel...

Yes, I am unlocked and rooted. Running carbon 4/1 nightly atm and using KTK but whenever I try to flash a new kernel I get an error. In TWRP it says "Error flashing update binary" and in CWM I get Status Error 7. Both are latest versions and the kernels are for my version of Android as well and the downloads did download successfully. Just got no clue what is happening.
U can use SU to update ur binary. I also recommend to have the latest twrp (2.6.3.1. I read that 7.0 ppl having trouble with backups) or cwm recovery

Updated my SU binary and still getting the same error. "Error executing updater binary"
I guess I can try CWM

Do a clean install. Factory reset format. Then flash rom and different kernel

Status 7 error indicates you need to update your recovery
