For current Nexus S owners, what phone will be replacing it? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Galaxy Nexus has come and gone but it didn't intrigue me enough to upgrade to. While the NS is still a great phone, the hardware is slowly becoming dated and it's inevitable that most of us will get a new phone eventually.
For those of you who still have an NS like me, are you eyeing any particular phones that you might switch over to in the near future?

Might switch to a Samsung Galaxy SIII whenever I get too tired of this. I can see it slowly fading away, being too slow for some things. With Jellybean it looks great but doesn't perform as well as it did with Gingerbread. We'll see whenever I'm too tired with it I guess!

Not really. They've timed it in the past, but it doesn't expressely mean a new version I believe.
Even then, Nexus One released with 2.1 Eclair, while Nexus S released with 2.3 Gingerbread. Not exactly a leap forward as big as Galaxy Nexus with Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.
The first Google device was still the G1, released in October 2008 with Android 1.6. Old school haha!

Yes, but some version were incremental updates rather than absolutely new OS. The names changed, but very little did in the background from Eclair to Froyo to Gingerbread, as I said. Nothing stops them from releasing 4.2 and calling it Key Lime Pie...

Expect the a new nexus around December.

galaxy s II

had a s2 x for all of 3 days.. picked it up on the cheap cause it was boot looped and owner didnt know what to do with it.. sold it on a good profit and picked up a Nexus with change to spare. think this nexus will do me till the next google phone actually comes out or what comes of the new arm 15 processor

I replaced my my aging (plagued by search bug) white Nexus S (i9020a) with a Carrier (SaskTel) Galaxy Nexus... just got it today and was well worth the new contract.

Next Nexus. Can't go back to other phones after using this for so long.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

in june '13 my contract will drop, at that time I will find a new one.. I'm actually falling in love with a sony nexus... but apart for manufacturer will be a nexus

nexus is the only way to go honestly. im eagerly awaiting the announcements for the new nexus phone's ... there is going to be multiple phones instead of just 1 phone from 1 company. so far im pretty sure samsung , sony & lg are all making a nexus type phone. if sony makes one , i probably would drool over it. i love the look of their current phones , and something with a fresh design factor as such with vanilla android on it would be gold from them.

Nexus "3"

According to rumors, the next nexus will not only not have an amoled screen but will be made by LG. Am I the only one disappointed?

Well dont you get it ?
HTC is far more expensive than Samsung which is far more expensive than LG.
Nothing feels like my old HD2 that was the most great cellphone ever. I might sell my nexus to go get an HD2 and stay with it until it rots.
Why do u really care abt something which doesnt even exist...?
Relax and have fun with ur nexus s and the samoled, while google and next manufacture comes out with another masterpiece in some unforseeable future.
Remember this, that gogle never said they are going to come out with any of pure google experience handset suntil they launched N1.
N1 saw some nice responce but wasnt doing so well but the noise in consumer market was asking google to come up with next iteration, they did and they saw a massive success, continued the legacy by extending the nexus family with NS.
Lets see what do they do for us in future...
Just my 2 cents!

I believe that rumor is for Google and LG to be creating a "Nexus" tablet, not another phone just yet. The Nexus S just came out!
I will be very interested to see a Google tablet

Latest rumor actually is that Motorola might be building the Nexus 3.
A very reliable source said that Apple will have the new nexus *nexus 4GS* ;-) Let's stop speculating what the next nexus will be and enjoy what we have now.

This is indeed correct the likely choice of the next nexus mobile device line will be motorola due to the CEO of motorola showing up at the Nexus s launch and talking with google ceo etc. they have made a contract to be the next maker im pretty sure you could find the info online
Actually there are rumors of both companies making the Nexus 3 PHONE. And they are just that, rumors.
I actually know both the ceos of LG and Motorola and they said that Casio was producing the N3...
5 inch screen
super-duper amoled 28000×9334 resolution.
24mp camera
2ghz quad core processor
1Tb of ram
front facing 3d camera with sexual chocolate
...the rest of the specs sound a little ridiculous to me so i am not going to list them.
I am holding out for this one

Why does Google forget the first Nexus s?

just read an artical on androidcentral that the htc google nexus one got android 2.3.6.
In the meantime nexus s 4G got andorid 2.3.7 and the normal nexus s is still n 2.3.4
why do they forget this device where there are still lott of bugs with wifi and keeping connection with google.
Hopefully this will better with ics
Will the NS even get ICS? :/
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
if the nexus even got gingerbread and now 2.3.6 then the ns would get ics or i will never buy a nexus phone again
I'm really pissed at this too! If they were to give an explanation, fine, but there ain't nothing been said!
Sent from my Nexus S
I dont think the nexus one will not because google doses not want to but b/c of the hardware its too outdated it has little memory, ram etc so it will be buggy and laggy and goovle would prefer a much smoother experience I heard once it got gingerbread it was acting slow, nexus prime 4 me : D
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk
2.3.6 was a bug fix for a bug the original Nexus S doesn't have, same with 2.3.5. 2.3.7 on the other hand brought Google Wallet which is Sprint Exclusive and since i9020t has GSM bands and not CDMA and can therefore not run on Sprint's network we don't get it.
The 2.3.6 update stared rolling out to Nexus S devices on September 2nd. From what I've read, it is mainly to fix the search button bug that has been affecting some NSs. So far I think only Canadian NSs have received the update, though.
I wouldn't be so upset that you're not receiving the update though because there are reports that it kills tethering and portable hotspot.
http://thisismynext.com/2011/09/02/...ate-confirmed-rolling-out-tethering-problems/
I wouldn't be too worried about ice cream sandwich. Google wants the open handset alliance to commit to 18 months of updates for all devices. (I suppose this would be 18 months from launch, rather than 18 months from whenever you happened to buy it.) I can't image them not updating a pure google phone for even 12 months. I wouldn't be surprised if the n1 got it, too.

Says the guy who is logical and not knee jerking. Why is everyone up in arms about not getting an update the targeted bug fixes NOT for their device? Outside of 2.3.7 you're not missing anything.
Wallet was always going to be a Sprint exclusive launch since it was announced.
If you want the latest build Google provides the binaries, source and instructions to build an AOSP rom. It's simple and you can easily always be as up to date as you would like.

I don't see any problem here. My 2.3.4 running i9023 is working just fine, without any search/tethering/reception/other problems, so I guess those fixes don't apply to my device
Maybe device specific fixes should have some kind of unique name? Like 2.3.4a?
If anyone is here to be blamed, I would point out Samsung for making at least 4 different devices named Nexus S with their own issues i9023 is not even anywhere officially listed as SNS...
Oh, and stock GB on N1 was not even close to be as good as on SNS. 2 second wait before call answer anyone?
Good day gentlemen
For the people with the original nexus s complaining...I feel you cause I have it myself. Yes at first I was pissed of about not getting updates. But after doing some research I finally realized we have in all the nexus versions have the perfect built. Update 2.3.5 brings better 4G reception for sprint users. I also wanted 4G but not noticing my phone does run hsdpa even though it says 3G. Update 2.3.6 brought voice search fixes. That we don't need. And now 2.3.7 it is not googles fault they wanted google wallet to get pushed through but T-Mobile has a deal with ISIS another form of mobile payment. So yes I understand your frustrations. But know it is not googles fault its your carriers like myself T-Mobile. And which I think tmo is no longer running the show but at&t. So be happy with your original nexus s it is the perfect built among others.
And I'm a proud user of my nexus s running stock 2.3.4 rooted

[Q] IceCream Sandwich for Nexus S

The ice cream sandwich will be launched first on nexus prime, we all know that. I want to know how long will it take before nexus s sees an ota update for ice cream sandwich too?
I remember it took quite a while for Nexus One owners to officially get Gingerbread. It was months, wasn't it? I may be mistaken.
I hope Ice Cream comes sooner for NS owners.

The reason for the massive delay was the immense number of bugs in GB upon its initial release (since it was pushed out before it was really ready).

We've already supposedly seem ICS leaks for the Nexus S already so I assume it isn't that far off. That's only if those leaks were legit though.
And seeing as the Nexus Prime will be truly different than the Nexus S, I'd assume the NS was used to test ICS against traditional form devices (phones with front buttons). When GB went to the Nexus One, I'd assume it had very little progress to begin with as the NS was practically the same phone meaning that they didn't need to test it on the Nexus One.

we did see gingerbread on the Nexus One well ahead of the actual launch [remember the lock screen animation leak? :http://phandroid.com/2010/10/21/gingerbreads-screen-off-animation-exclusive-video/]
so, even though we've seen a (supposedly) leaked version of ICS running on NS, it might still be a while before we get it on our pretty NexS-es
i'm in no hurry though ...
I remember reading somewhere that Nexus S will be the first phone to get ICS and Nexus Prime will be the first to be shipped with ICS.
I hope ICS will be released on the Nexus S when it's ready. I don't wanna see a disaster of an update like Gingerbread 2.3.6
I'm not impressed with Google at all when it comes to updates. They cause more harm than good!

No way ICS will be released when they launch the Prime. It will be an exclusive on the Prime model for weeks, if not a month or so. This will force geeks who just can't wait to buy the Prime rather than settling and updating their NS.
It's all speculation at this point, but if I were to guess I'd say the NS will get it 1-2 months after release. That's all it is, though; a guess.
Prime will have it exclusively for a good few months if the past is any indicator of things to come
From what i understand, ICS is supposed to address to current fragmentation issues with Android, and hopfully unify all phones/tablets with one version.
Under this logic, it makes sense that they would push it out ASAP

I as I'm sure all of u would love to ics sooner rather than later. I can't help but think about how Apple handles their updates though. The 4S released today running ios5. However ios5 was available Wednesday, two days before the 4S was launched. For me, if this was going to happen with Android and ics I would be over the moon! It's unlikely but hey, we can live in hope eh?
