I originally posted this on the wrong forum:
I just picked up a US Verizon Galaxy S3 16gb and I am on the fence about rooting and the like. I have always been into tinkering and wanted to start learning to create ROMs. I did so back in Windows Phone 6.5, but I haven't done anything Android as of yet other than app development (and I barely have time to learn that). My question is with the possibility of the Jelly Bean OTA coming out very soon and I can only assume that the exploits that have helped the developers to this point will be patched.
I just want to know if I need to root and change the bootloader now or if it would be a safe bet to wait. Any help would be appreciated!
Read up on what rooting this device entails, backup your IMEI, and root it now (if you absolutely want to). It's a safe assumption that if you wait for the JB OTA, you may not be able to root for quite awhile afterwards.

Agreed, these devs will have the OTA update packaged and ready for us rooters right after the release or possibly before! Lol. Rooting now is a good idea incase the current methods change after the update. Plus I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for Verizon to release it!

The Nexus is easy enough to deal with. But again - WHY do you want to root?

Definately should root! The custom roms and better battery life is worth it. With a warning to read thoroughly the process so you dont brick!

i try this, thanks
I would only root if you want to. Most root .zip's have an "unroot" batch file for easy un-rooting.
It all comes down to "what do you want to do?" And "does it need sudo access?"
Hope it helps!

Hey,
I'm offering a $20 bounty to whoever would like to have a Skype chat with me (video preferably) and help me root/unlock bootloader/flash a rom. I come from the land of jailbreaking iPhones and this whole root stuff seems a hella more complicated.
Here is my situation:
I am updated to the latest version of android (4.0.4) with the latest OTAs from Verizon. My baseband is the latest VRLG7 version. I would like someone who has gone through this whole process or someone with credibility on XDA.
There is so much compatibility checks that you must do that it is too hard for a newbie like me to risk my $600+ device.
I am running stock TouchWiz with no mods or root or anything.
Please reply and I will PM you shortly.
Thanks!
There is still the option of posting your doubts here on XDA, and paying nothing..
If you are still unsure of what you are doing, then perhaps you should read up on this stuff, and maybe even watch some videos on people doing things like this. Modifications to the firmware of the phone should not be attempted unless you know what you are doing.
I would help you for free. But I'm at work for another five hours. So I'm no help right now.
There's a root tool you can use.
From there, use unlock boot loader app from market.
Install Rom manager. Flash recovery.
Install room as needed. I have files at home to use. I can upload them later.
There are guides all over the forum. Look in the development section.

Biggest mistake you can make is to pay someone else to walk you thru this and in the process, learn nothing about your new phone.
Everything you need is in these forums. Read all the stickies ... read them again ... and then, again. Rooting and unlocking your bootloader are pretty much one click propositions.
Then, when you are ready to play with root privileges, you will understand modems, kernels, ROMs, rom themes, build.prop tweaks, etc. ... and won't do something stupid, like trying to flash an I9300 ROM to your I535.

Yes, everything you need is in these forums, but I could definitely see it being more reassuring, less stressful, and less time consuming to have someone explaining the process as it's happening. Hands on learning and instruction.
The fact that he is willing to pay someone $20 for their time and expertise is pretty cool of him. A lot of users on here just expect tech support for free, lol.
If you still want a live walk through, I'd do it.

I completely understand the fear. I've been rooting and roming since the Original Droid and I still get nervous each time I try doing it with a new phone. However some amazing people here put together some truly impressive tools and tutorials. Follow them step by step and you'll succeed. Destroying the phone to a point where it's not fixable is usually not that easy.
Personally I used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709 and everything was SUPER easy.
Once you do it a few times you really do lose the fear, in my case it always comes back with each new phone.
Just for the record, I'm very happy with my S3 and the only reason I even rooted was to make it not turn on when the home button was pressed. I had it in a pouch and it kept getting pressed in my pocket.
Wow. Just a few hours and I got PM's from people showing me how to do it all for free. You guys are truly amazing. It's so great that we have such a large community on XDA with such helpful and supportive people.
My new reasons that people should switch to android.
1. Great OS with endless customization
2. A rock star community of wonderful people
Thanks so much guys.

I was just posting this to ask if anyone had found a way to root gingerbread running the latest OTA, the one where HTCLinkifyDispatcher was added. I had rooted my old shift before (also running 2.3.4) using Vicodan's method, but I then had problems and had to get a new Shift recently, and someone else who was holding my phone at the time installed the OTA so I am unsure as to whether I can still root using any method.
Looking through the posts, I found that the ShiftySonOfA script had been attempted, but does not work on this OTA. However, I do not know about the other methods. If anyone can confirm whether they work or not, that would be great, before I attempt to root my phone and have to stop in the middle of the process. If not, I can attempt the other methods and then post here again with my results as to whether I was able to get root on this OTA.

Hmm yeah that was the one that I read through, the most that Indirect said about it was that he wasn't sure if it would work on this OTA, so I'm not sure myself...hopefully he is though
Also on a sidenote not related to this question...I would love to become a developer. Or even help a developer because I really like this sort of stuff. If anybody would be willing to apprentice me or something like that, that would be great because I would like to (at some point) maybe even make my own root for an Android. Any replies to this are welcome, or pointers as to how to get started and stuff. Thanks in advance!
next month i might be either upgrading both of my lines or cancelling my contract, not really sure yet but either way ill probably be selling both of my evo shifts then. or maybe ill donate to indirect (for root purposes) and pwnyourace (for development purposes (ROMS))
Hi.
I'm a new membr to XDA, not ANdroid, I've had my Samsung s3 since it came out. I want to upgrade to Jellybean. I Have Odin, and I have the JB file to Flash. I'm blind, so I'm not sure what the best way of doing this is. Odin is accessible, but entering download mode might be a problem because there would be no speach unless there was vibration feedback. Also, how do I unlock the bootloader? I'm using a PC. Can I just use Odin to unlock it? Thanks for the help in advance.:fingers-crossed:
I would read up on it. But if you want easy just wait (sources say maybe Friday) for the ota. It will be coming soon.

Well, I could, But I don't mind hard. I like challenges. LOL.
Read section 2 of Droidstyle's guide in the development section. In section two of that guide, you will find everything you need to root, unlock, and install a custom recovery in order to flash a JB rom.
Wait and I do apologize. I'm not sure how best to help you if you do in fact have a visual handicap. I'm honestly not aware of a way to go forward and not cause any issues.

You don't need to root to get a stock jellybean release on your phone. You would use a program called odin and put your phone into download mode and it will flash the system on your phone. If you don't like it or need to warranty your phone you just odin back to a official verizon release.
You can follow this guide, you would need 1,2,and 8. Then just follow the steps included. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114
Rooting is something you would do if you wanted to run apps or alter system files that require special privileges to access, read or write. A good reason to root is flash a custom recovery. The custom recovery will allow you to make backups of your phone. If something breaks on your system you can simply restore a backup in like 10 mins and its good as new
If you want to flash a rom then you will need to rooted AND have your bootloader unlocked. Its a pretty easy process to do everything as long as you pay attention. I.e. don't flash a rom meant for another carriers S3 or the international S3 cause you will hard brick your phone and have to mail it to someone with like $60 to get it fixed A good rom to try first would be CleanRom imo. There are many guides around this forum, just read em and reread em then go at it. If you are unsure about something then ask before you do it.
P.s. Backup your imei...... here is a great guide on how to do everything... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709
I just recently had to make the same decision! Finally, after a good bit of research and youtube video watching, I decided to go ahead with the root process and couldn't be happier! Especially with Verizon being so far behind right now.
It's so easy to do. Just read and follow all the steps.
Just my 2 cents,I couldn't imagine having a non rooted phone. Even if you don't want to flash a rom, getting the bloat off is worth it. Some apps can be disabled now but a few still linger.
I may still have 'noob' status on this forum, but I have been lurking here for years. And I have rooted all of the Android phones that I have had (Droid Incredible, Thunderbolt, and now GS3). I don't do much with my rooted phones, but being able to run a version of the operating system (JB) that seems like it will never make it out of Verizon R&D is totally worth it.
The root method for the S3 is incredibly easy. And there is plenty of help on these forums. Just make sure you read the info before moving forward, and all should be well.
I would say go Root. I too have been following the forums, and you will find an incredible amount of information on this site. Helpful people as well.

I'd say go for it, why wait for the jelly bean update when you can get it from leaked ROMS already.

I would definitely root. There are so many roms, mods, themes that you can flash and it seems like something new every week. Plus this maybe one of the easiest phones to root that there is. There many guides that will help you and the community is wonderful.
You have v6 camero dont you want the v8 top of the line?

Make sure you do your research before hand, there is more than enough info on here but really there is no reason not to unless your phone was given to you by your job or something

I didn't know that. Thanks for the info!
I rooted my Droid Incredible and my Kindle Fire. Both were easy with a tutorial. It made the Kindle Fire a whole new device. I was waiting to root my S3 until after Verizon released the JB update, but seeing the quoted post above, it looks like I don't have to wait for Verizon.
I believe there is a one click root method for the VZW S3 so there's really no reason not to root!

You still need an unlocked bootloader to do this which would void warranty anyways.
So worth it!!! Root it!!! There are plenty of Step-by-Step guides in the developers forum that makes it so easy...but please read all the steps first then do them....
You know, I would always root, but would be much less tempted if Verizon didn't load up MY phone with bloat.

Yes rooting your phone opens up the posibility to do anything flash roms, mod, ect.
If you like being able to customize your interface then you should defiantly root your phone.
