I've been getting Gmail crashes for well over a month now. There hasn't been an update from Asus or Google that has resolved the issue. It makes my use of Gmail on my tablet impossible. I've done cold boots and cleared data, and cache, etc. Nothing is a permanent solution yet.
Here is the logcat. Does anyone have any suggestions?

This specific case is the infamous (Actually, rather under-discussed on these forums I think) nvidia kernel driver bug.
The Nvidia kernel driver tries to allocate several contiguous physicial pages which is a very bad idea. The bug has been known and a fix known since April. The fact that Asus hasn't pushed out the fix is frustrating to say the least. On the bright side, I checked the TF300 JB source and the bug is fixed in Jelly Bean. On my tablet, this bug is responsible for a great many "application" crashes, especially google maps.

That's excellent news that they finally rolled it in on the TF300 JB (which should flow right into the TF201 and TF700 ports). This is an incredibly frustrating issue.
I am also relieved to hear this is supposedly fixed with JB. I have been frustrated about this since I first bought a prime in February and then an Infinity last month (hoping to not experience the problem, but no such luck). Gmail has been basically unusable all along. Boggles the mind they could let this go so long with such an essential app.

Just to be clear, I was referring only to the second post in this thread which looked like it is likely fixed in JB. If you actually get an ANR error, it is likely not the GL kernel bug I was referring to because the kernel normally kills the requesting process so I would expect the process to die with no ANR message. There are likely multiple bugs causing trouble for Gmail so I'm not saying all our troubles will be gone with Jelly Bean.

Is it like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTiaX_oK8o8&feature=plcp
It's weird and it happens to me both on the prime and the Infinity... It comes and goes actually. It decreased a lot after a full wipe on the prime. Now on the Infinity, I had so many camera photos and videos (around 5000) after deleting more than half of them, I noticed that it still never happened... Yet

Of course but FWIW, I rarely, if ever, get ANRs from GMail. In fact, it does not even crash/exit on me that regularly. So I think this'll fix most of my Gmail woes. Any stability updates are welcome, in general.
I haven't experienced gmail crashes but everything else pretty much stops responding non-stop. I did full wipe also. I'm getting so frustrated with my TF700T did not have this many issues with tf3oo . Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That opengl bug manifests like crazy on my TF700 and did on the TF201 as well. The 700 may even be worse due to the higher res screen. IMHO, this is the single biggest problem with the Transformer series. I've had five transformers (101,201,700) and they have all been absolutely PLAGUED by this issue. I have learned tweaks and work arounds to minimize its impact but bottom line is I have to think about the memory usage of my device way too much and still see a less than fully acceptable number of crashes caused by this one issue.
Some people probably see it a lot less due to different setups/combinations of apps. But my TFs have all been train wrecks under ICS because of this. So the news that this will be addressed at the OS level is huge for me personally. I am stunned that this has persisted for so long. It has literally been present on every ASUS ICS I have used since day one.
The best work around I have is to run FMR Memory cleaner on the device regularly and stop unnecessary startups, etc. People will tell you that they cold booted, reset, etc, and "fixed" it but it will come up again, those things are just clearing it out the memory for a while until it can choke again.

What a shame with such good hardware, which no apps support these tablets. Makes me feel like I wasted my money when nothing works properly.

TBH, Android is very cool but it is an absolute mess with respect to fragmentation. There are so many devices and so many manufacturers and so many versions of the OS that it is amazing it is usable at all. You constantly see stuff where something is completely broken for one user and another guy with the same device and OS will claim it works fine.
This ASUS ICS opengl thing is particularly egregious, especially since it has been identified and had a fix available for MONTHs, so I can't wait for it to be fixed.
But, honestly, apps frequently crash on all of my android devices not just the TFs. The frustrating thing about the TF is that it is frequent and a lot of them are "core" apps for my use: Skype, nook, third party launchers, kindle, netflix, Virtually every 3D game, Virtually all of the Google apps, are all unacceptably unstable on the TF series. I'm hoping the opengl fix will at least take out the majority of the last two (games & google).
Sure there are going to be guys who come here, look at my list and say "Well, X, Y, and Z all work for me you must have a configuration problem". "You should return/RMA", "You need to reboot", "You need to clear caches", "You need to factory reset", but seriously, that is all BS. None of this would be necessary at this level of frequency in a stable system and I have used at least five TF series devices running ICS across three models and they have all been like this. My other Android devices have been like this (although to a lesser degree than the ICS TFs)... It's not bum hardware, it's a broken hardware/software system.
Look at any android app support forum (just came from the Skype forum) and seriously, I can't imagine having to support this. It has twenty different problems on twenty different devices running twenty different variants of the OS. No wonder they just forge ahead with new versions hoping they will accidentally address customer issues.
You're right it is a shame.

I totally agree with everything you said, couldn't have said it better myself. Got games I purchased that I can't even play right now lol like dead space ran on my old tf3oo but unavailable for my infinity !!!! Wtf really I don't know what to say I'm just at a lost for words and upset. Hopefully Asus fixes the issues with the open GL soon. Right now this thing is only good for me watching few movies.

I have a Teg3 One X and it's on the 2.6 kernel (after four updates) and has been since it launched in March. Owners haven't reported any of the issues you guys are discussing other than the occasional app conflict which is pretty much to be expected. So while the issue may be inherent to the kernel there would seem to be ways around it. Is it only with a specific kernel version? That might be why HTC's stayed on 2.6.
I have not heard or found any way around the OpenGL out of memory issues (other than rebooting every few days). I think it depends on how you use the device and what apps you use as to how frequently it occurs - or maybe it has something to do with Asus' implementation of ICS (which is pretty poor, to be honest), but on the transformer devices, it's a very common issue and I have not seen any way to work around it (other than rebooting, like I said).
It is a very annoying issue - I will be very happy once it's corrected!

Still seeing the same crashes and logcats after the last OTA. Hopefully it will be fixed next week in JB because the tablet really loses a lot of its usefulness with Gmail being unusable and Google maps crashing from the same issues too. I don't understand how the fix wasn't in the last patch if it has been known for months.

Yeah, maps and gmail are the worst. They almost always close after 10 seconds of use.
Should be reason enough to return the tablet..
Anyway lets see what jelly bean brings. More problems? Salvation?
Next week will find out.

I think it would be a good idea to compress /system/bin and /system/lib at least with squashfs, I have done this on a couple ubuntu and gentoo systems and it actually increased performance and space significantly!
Reasons (short version): decompressing data is faster than reading it from the hard drive, in most current computers, especially when you have multiple programs reading from the disk, causing thrashing, and/or when the data on the disk is fragmented. You can read more details about what was done and the results on http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4732709.html#4732709
Squashfs is intended for general read-only file system use and in constrained block device/memory system, it can also be combined with a union mount system like unionfs and aufs for read/write access.
Gentoo Benchmark results:
I have compressed /bin /sbin /lib /opt /usr and then tried the following operations with and without the squashfs images mounted:
1) start the system up to the login screen
2) login and wait until desktop is usable (session is restored, hard disk stops screaming)
3) start openoffice-writer
4) start eclipse
5) generate random file access pattern and record the total time to read all files.
Code:
# find /usr -type f -printf "%s %p\n" | sort -R | awk '{ printf $2; printf "\n" }' > /sort
# time cpio -o --quiet -H newc < sort > /dev/null
Some Benchmarks on a gentoo system:
Times without squashfs+aufs:
1) 7.5 seconds to load the kernel, another 10 seconds until file systems are mounted (up to this point no speed increase is possible by this method), another 42 seconds until the login screen pops up (out of which 24 seconds are just for waiting on the network interfaces). A total of 60 seconds, out of which only 18s are relevant to our benchmark
2) 16s
3) 9s
4) 25s
5) 36m31.726s
Times with squashfs+aufs:
1) total time: 58s, out of which 16s are relevant to the benchmark -> 11% decrease in time
2) 10s -> 37.5% decrease
3) 6s -> 33% decrease
4) 22s -> 12% decrease
5) 9m48.873s -> less than 1/3 of the normal time!
We will be able to improve android boot time, app launch time, and increase space, what more could we ask for? Maybe a little bit more ram? Whats up with compcache too?
So now we just need to compile squashfs-tools for android and experiment, im pretty damn excited to try this!
[edit] Also ubifs has lzo compression, not sure how that would work either, it seems ubifs is favored over jffs2 and yaffs2
found a nice pdf:

Benchmarks Of Yaffs2, JFFS2, SquashFS, & UBIFS:

Seems like people are already using ubifs on android:

you should PM Cyanogen about this, he's good at this kind of stuffs, maybe he'll incorporate this hack with his MOD.
This would be a great addition to the Cyanogen Mods. Its fast enough as it is, but I can see this helping a bit more if it gets implemented!

I notified him on Twitter, He said:
@ionstorm it's a good idea, maybe in a later release
I am sure if you say something in his thread and make more awareness of this im sure we can see it done quicker, I also let DudeOfLife know and he said he will look at it for a future release as well, he also thinks its a good idea.
Hey Defcon I'm actually playing around with this instead of Union/Cram for an upcoming build and its nice to hear some more good things!

hey count me in on testing this for you, also looking for your twitter..
this sounds like i good idea. i hope he does implement it
Justanotherdev just compiled squashfs for kernel 2.6.29, and he is working on it as well
I just started toying with this and 2.6.29 last night. Expect a new "experimental" version soon
1st post..
Good day all...I definately agree with poster about squashfs. I dont use gentoo..but i use Sabayon which is a gentoo derivitive..just has the option for source or binary...running an os on squash will def improve performance
compression is a mistake
Im sorry to say but this is bull****.
How you dare showing proof of eclipse (300 MB !!!!) loading up an insignificant 3 seconds faster just because you compressed it and system have to load 225MB from disk instead of 300MB. Or openoffice which i dont have but im sure it is worth a good 300 MB too, and again gaining another 3 secconds load time.
How much seconds of loading time will we gain loading a compressed 0.3 MB library, 0.00001 secs? And this "improve" at the cost of giving up a good amount of the very limited RAM needed for execution, this phone have!
not to say how much incompatibilities will carry the "decompressing on the fly" with the very poor and limited RAM this phone have. and even with cpu scaling and android accessing and decompressing libraries or apps on the phone.
force closes in sight.
I also dont trust the (5) point.
HOLY GRAIL:
The real speed boost will come with the compilation of the whole android system and libraries with -O2 (speed) instead of -Os (size)
The problem is a 2.5 MB binary compiled with -Os is a 20MB binary compiled with -O2.
-O2 is between 20% - 40% faster so i am drooling for it thinking about it, but... G1 doesnt have DISK SPACE.
-O2 compilation is the holy grail. Ask gentoo users
Oh, squashfs could come handy in this case.. sad we dont have RAM or SPACE and android is the monster of slowiness. java suck!
If its a mistake then don't use it and work on the O2 yourself.
also: the phone has flash memory, which should have totally different characteristics
I wouldn't totally dismiss this idea until it's actually tested. LZO compression is really fast. A couple of us are working on it.
Squashfs was made for and used for low memory systems, I've seen amazing results on systems with 128 meg ram and a 500mhz processor, we'll try it on android and see what happens, I'm curious

definately looking forward to seeing how this turns out, i just reverted back to ION today for the performance over rosie, and i cant imagine any faster, this would definately be another milestone if it worked out
Have you tried cyanogen's builds? Imo its faster than the ion roms.

I am not sure which builds are faster, so far its just peoples words without benchmarks, maybe we should benchmark fs read times, ram usage, free ram, cpu times.. etc..
Also some tweaks/changes may be useless or counter productive so we'll need some tests done to make sure which tweaks work and which do not.
We gotta work on is optimizing memory/cpu and startup times, with each change we should do a benchmark.
I just tested a build using the 2.6.29 build with squashFS. xbin, framework and modules can easily be compressed to squashFS images just like JF did with cramfs. Making /system/lib a squashFS image made the phone unbearable slow until it crashed

I have been using the new Fatal1ty ROM on my G1 and was seemingly having no problems whatsoever HOWEVER it transpires that people have been sending me sms messages and they have not been coming through at all. this has happened twice with one person and once with at least FIVE people in the past 24 hours.
Scouring these forums it appears that people using the JACHero ROMs are not immune to this problem either. I PLEAD with the developers here to find the root of this problem and solve it before working on making Rosie more efficient. SMS messaging is a CRUCIAL aspect of of day-to-day life for most people, and many could be unaware that they are even suffering from missing texts. The problem for me is arbitrary with no predictability, I have received messages from those whose didn't come through yesterday subsequently, so there is no problem with my network; however the original messages are still AWOL.
In the meantime I'm not touching these Hero builds and I'm going back to cupcake.
Please don't flame me, I'm not trying to put a dampener on people's enjoyment of these ROMS but I think this problem is deserving of its own thread rather than the occasional mention in a huge ROM thread which could leave it overlooked.

This thread was really pointless this has been discussed plenty of times as well as slight fixes...check your apn settings...or open up messaging go into settings and uncheck auto retrieve then reboot and then go back and check it off....this has seem to work for some people and has also been a known tmobile issue...
Hmm. Im on the latest jac build of hero. And the only issue im having is with mms's which is a known problem.
I tend to get 300 sms's a day and the person sending me these sms's would sure as hell let me know if i didn't reply to one for some reason lol.
I do use chomp sms rather then the default one though. Not sure if this might be fixing the problem people are having.

Hey mate,
Im on three in Australia. Thanks anyway.
Are the right APN settings meant to fix the MMS? As i am fairly sure i have the right settings for my provider.

i only missed one text today from 1 person
i guess it was more of my fault cuz i was in sams club and my 3g and edge were constantly switching so that couldve caused my problem
but other than that i havent been missing texts
This problem occurs to me too.
Even when I use chompSMS. Android receives the message, but i doesn't "give" it to the messaging app(s).
I think this is a memory issue, android seems to terminate even system processes sometimes. (I think it is)
I'm going to test it.
EDIT:Yes, memory issue... it worked while on homescreen.
Opened brwoser, send another test sms, no message got.

I noticed that you are runing at 528 MHz... I did not have any problems until I boosted speed, try going back to default speed range and rebooting.... Just an idea...I'm doing it now..
528 MHz shouldn't be the problem..
i think it's like this:
1. Brwoser starts, eats much memory
2. Android detects an incoming SMS, starts giving it to an app
3. App is starting, want's memory which isn't avaible
4. App get's killed, SMS is lost
I'll look how it works with Swapper enabled..
On JAC Hero 2.3.3
I can confir that this issue has happened for me today also. I had to call the 2 people I was expecting a reply to to confirm that they had sent me a reply SMS. I am on the UK T-Mobile.. I may also have to revert to the Cyan fast rom until this is sorted out... I'm glad you guys have confirmed that this is a general issue rather than my Update issues.
I did the same thing you did to confirm the issue. In some instances, the messaging app got killed.
Then, I saw on the JACHero thread that you need to disable "automatic retreival" from the messaging app, reboot, then enable it.
I ran the same test afterwards, and 10 messages in a row during high usage of browser with flash on the htc.com page, I have not had any missed messages.
Hopefully, that's the fix. I know it sounds strange.
EDIT: Never mind, it still happens.

I think this has worked, got a txt almost straight after I did this... Will have to confirm this over time though. Hero 2.3.3 and the Optimised Rosie are the closest to a fully usable Hero now and the more I use it the more I like it... Lack of SMS would have to be a deal breaker for me, already had an argument with the GF about that!
I submitted it as a bug at http://code.google.com/p/jacheroplus
I'm glad I'm not the only one having this problem. I text more than I talk on my phone. It seems that when I ask some to text me it works but then a friend will text something and I won't get it. If this issue gets sorted out then JACHero is my rom of choice.

This sms problem is the only that stops me from using stably JacHero rom
Anyone know if they still get this problem with Swapper enabled? I haven't lost any text messages, but I might just not know it... hehe
Guys I jsut got off the phone with T-Mobile, I live in USA Midwest, and they have confirmed they are having problems with their sms/mms servers.
It first started where their servers would report completely wrong times and your texts would show wrong times from people received, and I guess this is what is causing problems with certain people receiving their sms and certain not.

It occurs on o2 Germany too.
Glad i'm not the only one then. Seems this problem isn't resolved after all.
I originally installed the Jachero ROM. I installed Handcent and received a couple of messages but when i selected them from the notification bar they had disappeared and i was unable to read them. The next day I tried out the fatal1ty ROM and it was only this morning, approximately 24 hours later that I started to find out that I'd been sent texts but had not received all of them, nor even received a notification.
I am on T-Mobile UK and am absolutely certain it is not a network issue.
With respect to enabling automatic retrieval in message settings, I fail to see how this is relevant as it is my understanding that SMS uses GSM and the APN settings are irrelevant. I could put 'Im a potato' as my APN address and i would still get texts ok in theory.
This really is a HORRIBLE problem, as we NEVER know for certain if we are receiving text messages. I really like the newest Hero releases BUT i simply CANNOT go back to them until someone finds the root cause of this problem and fixes it.
it says here for android 2.0 and up but we might be able to get to work on 1.6 .
I'd like to see this, too. Curious if it'll run on CyanogenMod.

but I have eclair rom ( CaNNoN Complete 1.2 )

make yourself a sig
click/tap edit my sig , in my sig
been using since this morning, its not bad.
I often get frustrated scrolling through the app draw, but now with a gestures icon on home screen I can just open it up and start 'writing'
it is a little slow between letters, but I imagine it will get better as it is developed and it is still faster than messing about in the app draw.
gets a thumbs up from me
Welp, I was so eager to get this working on CyanogenMod I dove in and spent the last few hours trying to figure it out :
Installed VirtualBox and Ubuntu
Installed the SDK, apktool, and other various required bits
Decoded the APK
Edited the AndroidManifest.xml to change minSdkVersion from 5 to 4
Rebuilt the APK
Set up a keystore and resigned the APK with my key (this part took awhile and I still don't really know what other options I have if any...)
INSTALLED THE APP SUCCESSFULLY
Bad news though. Although the app opens and starts giving you the opening wizard, it seems the service that "Queries data sources" in the background freaks out and requires a force close. The logcat:

These logs are a little above my head, though, and beyond my research capabilities at the moment (feeling a little defeated and TIRED ). Do they look like a result of my modification of the app or a framework limitation of CM's 1.6?
I'd appreciate any feedback, even if it's a "NO, STOP TRYING TO MAKE THIS WORK AND JUST SWITCH TO ECLAIR ALREADY" I attached the modified APK if anyone wants to play with it.

Second one.
Code:
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: android.provider.ContactsContract$Contacts
http://developer.android.com/intl/de/reference/android/provider/ContactsContract.Contacts.html
It was added in API level 5 (Android 2.0) and apparently it wasn't ported to CM1.4.x .

Cool, thanks for the quick response. Thanks for the great app, too!
Google just put it out for 1.6. Woot!
http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2010/03/gesture-search-now-available-for.html
Thanks for the heads up.
Spot On
I've been wanting an app like this for a while now. It work great. Now to reassign some buttons and shortcuts and remove redundancies...
Just a heads up. Enabling the ability to search music as well led to one hell of a bugfest. After doing so, it led Rings Extended to force close everytime something requiring changing a sound was messed with. That in turn disbaled all notifications I had set. It also completely "removed" my music from the music app. It was still on my card, but the music app did not recognize this. All this happened after enable said feature and THEN rebooting. Taking the music search off made rings extended no longer FC and all my sounds were back and my music once again showed up. Hope this helps out anyone with a similair occurence.
Up!
Anybody has the apk for Gesture Search 2.0 ? (this version presumably is compatible with N7 but is marked as incompatible on the Play Store)
TIA
I made this app that checks for the latest nightlies. It is for all of us who are obsessed with constantly checking for nightlies. So far it only checks for Nexus One nightlies. It is the first app I have ever made so it will probably force close. Sorry!
I'm not responsible for anything that this does to your device. It works fine for my nexus one.
Test it out and let me know!
Known Bugs: when u first start it, it notifies you of a new build, this will be fixed in the next release.
Can't cancel download
Doesn't auto-select link for all phones. PM me if it's not selecting for your phone. (it defaults to nexus one if it can't set it)
Alpha 5 adds boatloads of features. Auto Download doesn't work yet, its just there to taunt you in the settings. Time Zone display should work correctly. Copy MD5 to clipboard button. Less force closes.
CM Forum Link
Let me know if the notifications work. I didn't really have time to test them as I only get one shot every time a new build is released.
Also please tell me how battery life is with and without auto refresh on.
If anybody knows how to programatically reboot into recovery please PM me!
Release Notes:
Alpha 5 is completely rewritten to add NOTIFICATIONS (maybe, im not sure if they actually work), less force closes, fixed time zone, md5 to clipboard, progress bar, automatically sets directory for more phones
Alpha 4 selects which build to download based on your phone model and lets you choose download method (browser or sd card)
Alpha 3 displays the nightlies in your time zone (let me know if this works right)
Alpha 2 adds a toast and reverses the order so the latest nightly appears at the top
Alpha 1 initial release
Just what I wanted. Thank you so much.
thanks, once you get notifications working, this will be epic. but i think it will be quite difficult without getting cooperation from the hosting provider.
Nice, going to check this one out! Thanks!
rom manager does this
^only works if you're using clockmod recovery, im not
thanx op
hey the time zone for california is off by an hour (early), maybe it doesn't take into consideration daylight savings?? Anyways I would prefer it stayed in gmt. thanks for this

Exactly what I was about to post!
Thanks DEV!
Any chance of adding some kind of an easy way to know the last rom I downloaded? I know I can use a file manager to check but I'll admit I'm lazy and i think that it would be very useful

sorry, i made a silly mistake in the code. this doesn't work on anything but nexus one for now.
anyways, im completely reworking this app now that i know what im doing to add all the requested features and make it faster and more responsive.
I wanted to report a UI bug. When you select one of the nightly builds from the list and then select another rom, the second rom details are the same as the first one selected.
It looks like the popup values are only set on the first selection.
new update! let me know how it goes
Crashes every time I try to set update frequency to once a day.

if i enable auto refresh, do i still need to set refresh frequency? or does it mean that if auto refresh is on, it will automatically refresh based on your frequency?

looks like i skipped over the value for 6 hours. so if you set it to 12 hours, it should refresh every 24 hours. this will be fixed in the next release

if you enable auto-refresh it will automatically refresh based on your frequency. i'll try to make this more clear in the next release.

notifications seem to work if app is running. maybe next step is to allow for sound? i also noticed that, if the app isnt running in background it wont notify. when i rebooted my phone, the app doesnt auto load so i did not get any notifications. i saw in the forums that new nightly is up, so i loaded up the app and then it finally notify me.
maybe add an option to have it load on boot

Not only did they change the site but they changed from build dates to build numbers.
Whenever I attempt to manually enter a number into the Dialer app (DialerTabActivity.apk) that is not in my contacts list the app will close to the home screen without an FC message or anything else. I have tried clearing my cache + Dalvik Cache, along with clearing the data for the app, and any associated with it.
Here is the adb logcat results when typing in a random number and having it close to the home screen.

My suspicion is it has something to do with the contacts, but I don't know of any way to test that theory.
Any help is greatly appreciated. If it matters I am using the ADW Ex launcher.
EDIT Right now I'm trying the versions of DialerTabActivity.apk, Contacts.apk, and ContactsProvider.apk from ICBINB's first GB version, will post results.
EDIT #2 As I figured it just caused FC's.
u may want to omit your imei out of the log
ill forward it to desexton so he can debug it if now ill fix it for him...
Woops, forgot about that, done and done!
Any ideas? I'm completely stumped...
Yeah this happens to me randomly as well.. but not often

Same here, after installing the multi dpi friendly dialer posted elseware on the forum. My solution? I've just been using GO contacts EX. Its a pretty good dialer and contacts replacement.
