"Used" Desire S:no sd-card and boots into bootloader - What to do? - HTC Desire S

Hi
I got a htc desire S from my friend yesterday as a birthday present. It had a previously owner so it is used. There was no SD-card inside the phone when I got it, but I had a spare 8 Gb which I have inserted. I had a wildfire before which I rooted and install roms on, but I have problems with my new desire S.
I have connected it to the PC by USB and at first it did not recognize it, and in device manager it wrote "android 1.1" I think. Then I installed HTC sync but with no effect. Then I installed the htc drivers on the last comment here: http://www.modaco.com/topic/346331-htc-desire-s-usb-driver/ , and it finds the desire and removes the "android 1.1", but I still cant see the mobile in "My computer". I have read all the guides but don’t know what to do now.
It will only boot into the boot loader and writes the following:

Please help me because I dont know more what to do. I really apreciate the sligtest helpo.

I will suggest you to S-OFF your phone as you've 0.98.0000 hboot, it will be easy using revolutionary's tool. Then install a custom recovery and pick a rom in the development section.
OR find the correct RUU according to your region (fastboot getvar cidnum to check it) and install it if you want a STOCK firmware. There's a dedicated thread for RUU in the dev sub-forum.

Thanks for the fast respond and advice.
But my PC won’t recognize the mobile so I can’t use revolutionary tools. I have tried but is says no usb connection.
I have a usb sd card adapter so is is possible to take the sd card out of the desire, into the adapter, and transfer the RUU onto it and put the sd card back into the desire. Is that possible way? And what file should the RUU be? Exe og img or ???

You can extract the rom.zip file from the RUU, rename it PG88IMG.zip, put it on the /root of your sdcard and then reboot into bootloader.
Or you can install the android_usb_drivers (Google it, I'm not at home sry) in order to use fastboot. And
Code:
fastboot flash zip rom.zip
Anyway if fastboot drivers are installed, you should be able to run the RUU.

What md5 checksum do you want to check ?? There are many utilities to check md5 checksum on computer. Run superwipe script , then install Android Revolution HD 6.2.1 , You have the correct firmware for it. I can see.
I have a same problem.
Didn't read the thread very well and I upgraded the wrong firmware.
Now, I just see the ''HTC'' logo and after that it's only rebooting over and over again. I downloaded the firmware I needed, thought I will just replace it with this ''broken'' one, but I'm getting errors all the time. And after that, again rebooting.
HTC Sensation, S-Off, first firmware was 2.3.4.
Error is: ''CID incorrect, update fail'' in HBOOT.
Only way I can stop rebooting after that message is to take out the battery.
Anyone got any other solutions except the first answer?
Thank you in advance, sorry about my bad english.
NOTE: I'm a noob at this, just wanted ICS on my phone. So, please, explain it in ''moron language''

Pull the card out and boot it into hboot mode. Then to recovery. Mount your sd card. Plug it into your computer. Delete the incorrect firmware. Find a superwipe zip. Flash Zip. Then flash correct firmware.

It looks like you have a valid version of the Firmware (HBOOT 1.27.1100). However you need to understand that that version ONLY supports ICS ROMs, so it won't support your old ROM even if you recover it. Also as usual you should SuperWipe when changing things this dramatically.
As you still seem to be able to get into Recovery try the following:
i) Download the Superwipe Script from the ARHD thread, in the Downloads bit in he first post.
ii) Download a full ICS ROM, take your pick (my preference is Virtuous Inquisition 3.5).
iii)Copy the files over to the SD-card from your PC.
iv) Delete the PG59IMG.zip from the SD-card. (ADDED IN EDIT1)
In recovery, run the Superwipe Script. Then Install the ICS ROM. The first re-boot will take a few mins.
To check MD5s just get a free MD5 checker for your PC and also get one for the phone, when it's backup up and running.

You haven't detailed what your HBOOT is at the moment, what does it say if you go into BootLoader ?
As it's mentioning CID, I assume you didn't SuperCID the phone, not an issue just get the right one for you CID from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
After you update the Firmware you'll need to:
i) SuperWipe
ii) Install ICS ROM
iii) Remove the PG58IMG.zip file from the SD-Card.

In this thread ''[Firmware][Feb 22]User-Friendly Firmware 1.17/3.12/3.24 & 3.30 Unlocked'' I downloaded ''HTC China & H3G'', version 3.30 by mistake.
HBOOT installed the PG58IMG.zip file and after that he's just rebooting.
I have T-Mobile Europe carrier but my HTC is unlocked.
Now, I don't really know what firmware to download or how to check for the right one. Also, I don't know how to SuperWipe or anything so I need someone just to write all the steps. From Wipe to ROM. I found nothing on this anywhere else and I searched all night. I'm new to Android (Have Sensation for about 2 months) so thank you for your help people! Really appreciate it.

The same thing as XxUnkn0wnxX is getting.
So I'm following the steps from gol_n_dal to see what will happen.
I have done the same thing. I am on UK Orange and have flashed with the wrong firmware. My phone is now on a constant reboot loop. When i enter HBOOT i get the following:

HBOOT
CID incorrect!
Update Fail!
I think I need to setup super CID, but I cant as I cant boot the phone to connect via adb on my windows PC... Is there anything I can do to fix?

Take out your sdcard from phone . connect the sdcard to your pc via some sdcard reader. Then delete the PG58IMG.zip from the scard. You will be fine.

Tried that, still stuck in the loop. I think half the firmware update has ran, then it has failed, so i need to roll back...
Download both the 3.30 and 3.12 FW. Open the 3.12 zip on your computer and replace just the Hboot file with the one from the 3.30 zip. Then flash the customized zip so you'll have the 3.30 fw with the 3.12 boatloader (1.23 not 1.27) and then flash a 3.30 Rom.
Some phones arent booting with the 1.27 bootloader that comes with the 3.24 and 3.30 fw.

You can superCID from fastboot. Put it in bootloader, connect USB, bootloader should say fastboot USB.
Follow sticky guide in dev forum.

I had the same problem when I first tried to flash a rom, you just have to find the right firmware for your CID, find yours here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767, and if you don't know your CID just superCID as shown in the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300 and skip steps 5,6,7, just manually boot into bootloader.
If you want you can also see what I did on this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516373

Are you s-off ? If you are S-OFF , then you need not have any file.
Just boot into bootloader.
Open a fastboot terminal in pc.
and type
fastboot oem writecid 11111111
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot getvar cid
After this you will get a reply like this CID : 11111111
If you are not S-OFF, then first install adb and fastboot in your pc from here for windows or from here for linux and follow this guide.
How To get your Hboot Version - 3 methods below
1. Run the revolutionary Utility you just downloaded from http://revolutionary.io/ and if it has found your device it should read
"Found your Device: HTC Sensation Z710* Applications -> Development)
4. With the phone switched on (not in HBOOT, just the regular home screen), plug in your USB cable and select HTC sync mode.(IGNORE any warning messages on your phone telling you it cannot find HTC Sync )
5. Launch revolutionary.exe. It should detect the phone and ask for your beta key. Type it (BE CAREFUL, as its case sensitive) or copy and paste it in.
If Revolutionary fails to find your phone verify you have all the drivers installed, try disk drive mode or charging mode (Linux users can use disk drive mode. Confirmed to be working by others)
6. Once you have entered your beta key correctly, follow any on screen prompts or actions from revolutionary and wait for it to S-Off,
7. You're done. Your Device will Successfully have S-OFF....if it hangs on method 3 and doesn't S-Off. See post 2 below for solutions.
IF REVOLUTIONARY SAYS FAILED YOUR PHONE IS NOT SUPPORTED. Go back and check hboot using the methods above. some users are told its failed and they still have S off now. If you have S-off your hboot will now be 1.17.1011 and revolutionary will tell you now your device is not supported
8. Revolutionary will now ask you to Install clockwork recovery mod after S OFF. Type N and install it manually below (the recovery provided is v4.0.1.4 doesn't charge when device is switched off, the one below v5.0.0.1 does charge)
9. Your Device now is S-off.

By fastboot terminal I mean :
Open command prompt in windows.
CD to the directory where adb and fastboot installed ( generally platform-tools folder in the sdk).( Boot your phone into bootloader mode. and connect to pc)
Now type :

fastboot oem writecid 11111111
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot getvar cid

you are already SOFF...so not much hassle to do now
i assume you already have adb/fastboot setup..otherwise set it up suing this guide
guide to adb/fastboot setup
1.first we need verify whether you are supercid or not
if you don't know that then chk it via fastboot first
steps:
1.keep your device in fastboot mode and connect it to pc(mobile reads fastboot usb after this)
2.go to your adb folder and type this command
fastboot getvar cid
if the output is 11111111 then you are supercid
if not then do it (you can revert back to your original cid whenever you wanted just remember your original cid or save it somewhere)
command to supercid
fastboot oem writecid 11111111 (eight ones)
2.flashing firmware
get 3.32.xx.x fw from here firmware thread
its a PG58IMG file
for firmware flashing..just keep the PG58IMG file(name should be checked) on top of sdcard and boot into bootloader...the bootloader itself will identify it and will ask for update .say yes and the fw will be updated...after that you should remove the PG** file from SDcard otherwise you cant boot into bootloader (coz everytime you boot into bootloader it'll find the file and ask you whether you want to update or not..it'll be a recursive process)
(this firmware flashing is to just get the revolutionary eng HBOOT as your HBOOT state is now locked)
3.then
flashing recovery again
get latest 4EXT from here RECOVERY DB LINK
extract and put the recovery.img in your adb folder(pc)
then flash it via fastboot
command
fastboot flash recovery recover.img
then get the whatever ROM you want into Sdcard
go to recovery
first do a backup (safe keep)
then the important step(which solves petty issues if any like wifi error and all)
go to wipe|format and do "format all partitions except sdcard" this is powerful than superwipe...so superwipe is not required (i highly recommend this step when changing roms ...for upgrading roms this step is not required)
then flash the rom via recovery and ...enjoy

I'm having hard time to setting up adb to start.I've downloaded a recovery image.
There's nothing on top of PVT.
After some reading i worry thaat i'll screw it up if i flash the recovery without S-off and unlock bootloader.
I read somewhere that i could download a file from htcdev kernel section and flash but how to flash?i downloaded it.which program i should use to flash the file?
Get a newer RUU and flash. Check the CID and download the correct RUU for your CID.
And stop worrying so much, otherwise you won't fix anything. Flashing with different radio won't do a thing, as well as flashing a different RUU as long as you have goldcard. But since you don't have, just look for the correct RUU.
It seems like its hboot 98, just do the revolutionary ?

Also a good solution. Just need to move to FASTBOOT screen.
Bluehawk, just go on with www.revolutionary.io , it will root and s-off the device. No need guide link, just open the web, and it will show you the guide, step by step, newb friendly. But remember to choose the right option, imei and sn.
By then, after complete revolutionary, be happy and fastboot flash any recovery image.
Kinda lucky situation, already hboot 98, easy to handle i think. Unless the device soft/hard bricked already.

Hye guys, first of all im amazed to see so many replies/solutions given by u guys.
Alright,i've do tried to s-off using revo but i couldn't get my device detected by revo, sigh.Tried many times but it still BLINKING ON WAITING FOR DEVICE.Tried on another pc,same result.I've installed all the driver and updated my device in device manager. On my phone,If enter vol-|power on hboot/connect usb/my device manager detects as ANDROID BOOTLOADER INTERFACE and when i entered fastboot it detects as MY HTC.I don't know where i'm doing it wrong.Or its some chip fkd up?
Now,i've installed adb/fastboot on my windows7 and adb seems not working but fastboot going good. Here's some info i've got while typing some commands:
Fastboot device - HTC14ctxxxxxx (simply typed it xx,security purpose?idk lol)
CIDNUM - HTC_621
Emmc should be Sandisk
Version-main 1.31.950.2
If possible i really wanted to S-off it so that i could flash custom recovery etc,not much hassle as official i guess. So yeah, revolutionary not detecting my device.Maybe i guess because the phone had not set to debugging etc or so prior it went dead?
So should i download a RUU and flash?which one should i go for with above cid?can i flash with fastboot command?which command should i use to locate a RUU?
Sorry guys,i'm new with android and htc.hope u guys could pardon my noobies.
Revolutionary might be running in ADB mode by default, and that's the reason it's not detecting your phone - you can't boot to the state when ADB is functional, ADB daemon starts running when the kernel is booted already. Since Revolutionary is an executable, it's not possible to manipulate it into starting directly in fastboot.
In that case, I guess, you're left with flashing the RUU.

did you change to fastboot usb?
here's my step to revo, I pull the batt for 5 sec, put it in, and boot into hboot/bootloader . Top option is fastboot, i selected it and it will change to fastboot usb. then plug in usb . and it detect my HTC DS.
note : HTC Sync installed, and HTC Fastboot driver installed in order to get it work.
EDIT : Jack_R1 is right maybe. For your HTC DS, it's taiwan made, so search for oldest htc asia ruu.

My suggestion.
If you don't want to run into any problem try to make goldcard. It is easy. Use google search, and search for android gooldcard how to.
If you have a laptop, or cardreader it'll be a easy step.
Also before you run the RUU boot the device into fastboot. By volume down +poer button.
Don't worry.
I've messed my phone before and fix it without breaking it!
What you shouldn't do is pull out and rapid back in the battery while the phone stays at the white screen.
You can burn out the emmc chip that way.
[email protected] for the link buddy.I'll try it once i've prepared a goldcard, just incase.
[email protected] the midst of making a goldcard.Since i cant make goldcard on my phone,Tried readcid and goldcardhelper downloaded and plug my sd direct to laptop card reader but non working.I'll find someone who own an android phone and make golcard in their phone.
Appreciate you guys!Simply the best guiding forum!
UPDATE:
Got hold of a Samsung Galaxy SII,insert my 2gb unmount erase and did GoldCard Helper.I've got 2 CID as below:
mmc1:aaaa XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
mmc0:0001 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Which one should i use to create goldcard image?
Finally, the phone is up and running good!
I tried to make goldcard but not sure of the cid i should use to create image.
Went on to flash the RUU as per suggested by anaz and the phone came to life!I really appreciate everyone of you for the guide and advise.Thank you guys!

[Q] HELP! Way in over my head... trying to flash recovery.

So I recently purchased the T-Mobile version of the HTC-Sensation... since then I've been trying to flash a custom JellyBean ROM onto my device. I've rooted and flashed custom roms on previous phones but the process for this one has been extremely confusing. I've been mainly following this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1864053 I have the bootloader unlocked and I think I have S-Off, now I'm trying to flash a recovery image with the KSG utility but gives me a bunch of error messages that say FILE NOT FOUND - FASTBOOT.LOG and ACCESS DENIED and FILE NOT FOUND - ABD.LOG. I'm sorry if this is in the forum somewhere, but I've been working on this for hours and I can't figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Additional Details: I'm running Android 2.3.4
When I boot into the bootloader it says

I unlocked the bootloader but got stuck trying to S-off. Everything was going fine until the part where I run the temp_root.bat because I cannot get HTC sync to recognize my phone no matter what I try. I was wondering if anyone had the original version that came on the SD card or if there is a way to gain S-off without using HTC sync? Or can I get Jellybean without gaining S-off? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm pretty new this and feeling way in over my head here.

You are already s-off ,if you want to flash custom Rom flash 3.33 universal firmware (be careful when flashing check the md5 sum) after that flash 4ext recovery and flash new rom
Edit here is link for 3.33 firmware. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767.

@EmporerD
first you don't need a htc sync..
second your phone is already success s-off..you can see that in your bootloader state..
now i think maybe you already forgot the step to remove temp root from your phone after success s-off process..you can do that by running temp_root_remove.bat from the guide that you follow above..
after you had remove temp root from your phone..then you can continued to flashing a 3.33 firmware.. to do that..
just download firmware file from here....then copied that PG58IMG.zip file to the root directory of your sd card (the root directory mean is don't place it that file in any folder..just place it in your sdcard) you can copied that file with card reader..after that just put in back your sd card to the phone...then boot into bootoader..and wait until bootloader check it that file then ask you to updating it...just confirm it yes with vol up button..then wait until finish and ask you to confirm reboot with press power button..
after that you can continued installing custom recovery..
just download custom recovery.img file from here and extracted that zip file then copied that recovery.img file to your adb/sdk folder (the same place as your adb.exe and fastboot.exe folder)..then you flashing it through FASTBOOT with fastboot command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"..done..now your phone already had a custom recovery..that are can installing any custom rom...
hope this help..
THANKYOU guys. This helps a lot. I'm going to call it a night for a now, but I will try your advice tomorrow and post updates.
@JJeamy
So I tried to remove the temproot by running the temproot-remove batch file, it didn't do anything so I downloaded the PG58IMG.zip and updated it in the bootoader, now phone is stuck in a bootloop...?
Update: I tried to continue with flashing the custom recovery, but the dialog just gets stuck on "waiting for device" ...
Update 2: Installing the older drivers for fixed the problem of flashing the recovery so my recovery works but it's still stuck in bootloop. Unfortunately I will probablyrun out of time before I can get a custom ROM flashed, but thanks everyone for your help I will update my progress later.
Bootloader now reads:

so you can continued installing custom recovery like what i told you above...then after that you can continued installing custom rom that you want...

You are on the right path my friend you flashed 3.33 firmware so you hboot version is 1.27 that's way you experiance bootloop , because you have gb rom with ics hboot, so next step is to flash custom recovery!
To do that you need to have SDK files downloaded (Fastboot , adb files) and when you have that in the folder you got the files you copy your recovery img and that you open command window from there and you get your phone to fastboot (bootloader that fasboot) , that you write the command in the command window fasboot flash recovery recovery.img and you are done!
EDIT: here is guide how to find fastboot and Adb files you need http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152148
and for flasing custom recovery follow this guide step 2 flashing recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861
after that flash rom
and when you flash your first rom do format everything except sd card before flashing, (and make sure the first rom you flash is not kitkat because you may experiance difficulties when flashing)
So I managed to get recovery going, and I flashed CM 11 with 4.4 with no issue. : D

THANKYOU so much. You guys are awesome/

HTC RUU Stuck on Sending...

Hi,
I'm trying to update my HTC Desire S to the official Android 4.0 (HTCDev). When I'm trying to install it through RUU, it won't go past the 'Sending' part. My phone shows the grey HTC logo but that's it.
I tried 2 different PC's, different USB-ports... I installed all drivers (installed HTC Sync) but it's still not working.

What's wrong?
You could try flashing it manually. Then fastboot will actually talk to you as to what it's doing so that we can see where exactly things hang up.
Extract the rom.zip from the RUU (run the RUU, look in your temp folders, find the rom.zip, drag it someplace safe), then run the following fastboot commands:
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash zip rom.zip
It should take approximately three minutes to upload the zip to the phone.
Be sure to post the output of the commands here, and note that while I've successfully done this once on my phone, I can't make any guarantees that this will work out just fine on your phone. (That said, I expect no problems.)
(should it actually succeed this time around, you can reboot your phone using 'fastboot reboot' and enjoy your new ROM)
Note, however, that the official ICS RUU has some bugs and you'll have to root your device to fix them. This means unlocking through htcdev. It is recommended that you downgrade and S-OFF while you still can, and then flash a fixed custom ICS ROM instead of using the official RUU.
Do you have right RUU? First check CID of phone then find RUU that match your CID.Check guides here.Be careful RUU change all in your phone and that mean radio hboot ril and system.
If you don't have warranty anymore you can unlock it and do whatever you want with guides here on XDA.
