Update OS without Service - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Is it possible to update a Galaxy S3 (Or any other galaxies) without having any service, meaning only through Wifi? I am planning on using it as a iPod for a while, but I want Jelleybean without having to root the phone.
Thanks.

Since jb hasn't been released yet. No.

I know it isn't released yet. My question is, will I be able to update to JB without rooting and having no service?

No

My rooted phone upgraded to GB no problem. If it won't upgrade to ICS, I'm sure some ICS ROMs will shortly follow that you can use.

I've updated my rooted phone quite a few times before, including Froyo to GB. It just automatically unroots and you gotta hope Superoneclick can root it again on ICS.

Jb root

Can I still use the same version of rootdebugfs that I used for ICS to root the ota JB?

No.

Learn to search. There is a thread specifically related to the new way to root the new OTA.

Why does your signature stamp say you have the Note 2 for T-Mob. If you had the GS3, then your signature stamp would be the same as mine.

Saying things like this really makes me wanna help you. Try a google search.

Looks like you're primarily on T-Mobile in which case if you i535 isn't active on vzw network it won't get the update. You can flash a ROM. But you have to be on the network for it to pull from their servers.

You probably will need to take it into a store and have them update it. Or root it and load a stock root rom.
Just installed from here, very easy.

Use this method if you are on the old updates, if you are on the MF1 update. just pop in the micro sim from AT&T and select GSM. You can edit the APN on the latest update. but no 3G
Everything should work

I'm going to give this a shot tomorrow and let you know how that goes. Thanks for the heads up though! I did manage to root the device and get a recovery on it.

Curious though. Couldn't I downgrade my phone and then use the dialer code to get into the secret menu and unlock it that way?

I'm thinking that the menu won't show in older versions. Going by the guide IF you're not on the MF1 update would be the best way.

You can always try. I've never tried anything outside of LiquidSmooth v2.7. I just got my S3 a week ago. Haha. I'm sure it should work on any AOSP or AOKP ROM... maybe. :what:

Actually, now that I'm looking back on the guide and in the video... they do it on the stock TouchWiz ROM.
I've seen somewhere, unfortunately I can't recall where, that you can do it on AOSP and AOKP ROMs too. Hmm... maybe ask on the thread of the ROM and someone should be able to tell you.
And make sure your friend knows that if he does get it working that he will have edge data. He may be better off trading his S3 for an AT&T one.

It's possible without touching the bootloader but what is the point if you are stock 4.1.2 or rather stock 4.3?? of course stock 4.3 is better. But again what is the point when your bootloader is locked?? meaning no custom rom/recovery/kernel...
Lol my bad. Wasn't thinking bout the bootloader
