hello xda,
First, congratulations for a great work that you are doing here.
I am a newbie in android, and my son bought my wife a Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, OS GingerBread fortunately upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich is available, so I upgraded it.
My question is, is it possible to root this phone without flashing?
The reason I'm asking this is because I cannot play music from external sd card, only the default music and she don't like the list.
I have transferred more than 150 song to it but cannot play it.
I have downloaded some folder app but i can only play music one at a time.
I have read somewhere here that i need to root in order to be able to play music and not the default one.
Can someone please help or guide me to this problem, or maybe anybody can recommend some apps that I can download so I don't have to root?
Thanks in advance.
rooting without flashing on xperia neo
hello xda dev team,
may i ask for your help, i need to know if it is possible to root my xperia neo without installing a custom firmware?
i am not familiar with rooting and flashing firmware. my firmware is up-to-date (ICS) so there's no need to install new firmware, only to root, so i can install some modification for my phone, is it possible?
please please xda dev team , somebody help me.
thanks in advance

Hi all! I'm a considerable new comer to the world of Android. I bought my Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman in April this year and I have been running Gingerbread 2.3.4 build .62. I rooted it by following the steps listed out here.
Now that ICS is out I would like to give it a go. However the Update Center app on my phone says that I have the latest software and even PC Companion and SUS says the same thing (although sony says the update has been rolled out for my device's SI number). Anyways I found the ROM (ftf File) online and thought I'd do it manually via Flashtool.
On looking for a way to root it I found a tutorial by tracer123 where the polish blood project kernel has to be flashed. While trying to find out more about this kernel I learned that WiFi tether is not working and this feature is pretty important to me; the other features that don't work aren't quite as important and I don't mind not having them.
So my question is, is there another way to root android 4.0.4 on my LwW?
P.S. - I did find a tutorial similar to tracer123's (where the it's downgraded to a previous version, rooted and then uploaded) in the Sony support forum but since 4.0.4 is the first version of ICS to roll out to LwW I was stuck once more
have you try this method?

Hello friends,
I'm new to this forum and also to Android phones just have a rough idea about it. Now I've just bought a new SE LWW and upgraded to Android 4.0.4 from 2.3.4 using Sony PC Companion. But when I opened bluetooth tab for the first and tried to change the Device name I was unable because I was not able to see any tab of "Change Device Name" (I've turned ON Bluetooth), so anyone can please explain me how can I change Bluetooth Device name?
And also What are the benefits of Rooting? Should I root my phone (I've fear of Bricking)? If yes how should I root my SE LWW Android-4.0.4? Also can I unroot my phone back? How? Also please give every detail in brief! Hope so the members will help me to the extent.
Thanks,
Charizard.
Somebody please help me!:crying::crying:
Try asking Google?? Or look around forums maybe even ask somone who is in the Sony forums they more likely to know

Don't try to root if warranty matters to you. Also remember that a failed rooting effort can brick your device. Rooting benefits are:
Installing root specific apps
Installing clockwork recovery mod
Changing OS and ROM of your device.

I have lww too my friend.
For rename Bluetooth in 4.0.4 you have to go to settings and Bluetooth and touch menu ( that's a touchable button near home button in down of you phone ) and now you can see : Rename my Device ! Enjoy !
.......
But about rooting.
You must downgrade ( by flashtools ) your phone to 2.3 and root it and now again upgrade to 4.0.4 and now you can root this phone.
You can root your phone by flashtools.
Download it ( flashtools )
You can install custom rom by it....
And do very things! And enjoy...

Thanks a lot saeed74 but i think I should not root!!!
That very not true..
U will void a warranty on a sony by unlocking the bootloader..as u got to do it officially and they have the info in their server. Rooting however, would not as they won't know if u ever did it. Just flash it with stock rom before sending it.
2011 Xperia has some limitations than can only be solve by root.
1)link2sd to solve the low internet memory
2)swap, to maybe help with the low ram
3)uninstalling bloatware
4) install 2012 Xperias apps like walkman
Xtra reason
1) stop seeing advertisement
2) use vpn to safe some data quota
3)

I have posted on here before but no-one bothered to answer so I'm posting again.
I need to know how to root my Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc LT15i. I have the ICS 4.0.4 standard SE issue installed with a locked bootloader. I have followed several tutorials on this site and ended up having a phone that keeps crashing after starting up.
1. Where is the ROMs required to install before rooting?
2. Where is the tool to root this phone?
3. Where is the latest ROM for ICS?
Also, clear instructions would be appreciated - please don't direct me to another forum topic because that didn't help at all.
google or search

Hi mate, I've done it few days ago because I wanted to install Ultimate HD rom... just follow next page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1854415
hello,
recently bought an arc s, and started reading about root and the advantages of having custom roms, until I read several things follow a topic, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1683957, and now I have huge errors in my phone, as keyboard failure, left also have the option in the settings xperia, at the end I could not do any root, which failed? I have to follow to do a root and put a custom rom?
please ask for help, I've seen all the forum and can not find a solution.
I'm with 4.1.B.0.587, 4.0.4
my version of arc is LT15i
ok now fine all seting, but can't root.
i follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1874801 but not root, anyone help?
I have an old smartphone (model specified above), which I have tried to find a root for it (like FOREVER), and misrebly failed. I think that the problem is that I own the LT18A model, while every single root I found was worked for the LT18I users (as it seems in the comments).
I want to root it so I can uninstall some of the build-in apps that I dont use (such as facebook, youtube, and out-of-date & un-updateable operator apps.). They function poorly, take up space, and worst of all: they run in the backround (and on old phones such as this every megabyte of RAM counts.) Please help me.
Is there something I'm missing? A vital step a skip or something? Do i need to unlock the bootloader to root?
I probably have a custom ROM of the operator this phone was originally purchased from, does it make any difference?
If Anyone can explain to me step-by-step what and how to root, or point me to a usefull guide, i will be forever thankful.
