[Q] Launcher keeps crashing, icons frozen - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After about 4 months of being rock solid, my Transformer has started acting up this past week. After about a day of use, the homescreen will freeze up, stop responding to touch, and then have to be force-closed. After Launcher restarts, it will immediately crash again. During this crash cycle, I am unable to launch any new apps - however, I can switch between my already open apps using the "Recent Apps" button, no problem - they will even run perfectly for hours. But to launch new apps, I have to reboot. (NOTE: this is different than the well-known issue where the homescreen icons disappear, but swiping/touching still works. In my case, the icons and widgets are just "stuck" there.)
Things I have tried: Cold boot, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, change to static wallpaper. (problem still recurs)
I am using the same ROM/kernel/OC/UV settings that I always have (1.2 GHz, -25 mV on all).
I'm stumped. Anyone else see this?

I have the same kind of issue since 3 days ago. Launcher crashing, no icons on desktop but can switch between empty desktop. "Recent Apps" available. Cold reboot helps but problem will recurs. Stock Asus ROM, Android 4.0.3, kernel 2.6.39.4.

Hi slybin, yours is actually the more common issue - disappearing icons, but swipe/touch works. Mine is the opposite - the icons are visible, but swipe/touch does NOT work.
I'm guessing you are on stock kernel? Disappearing icons is fixed with Guevor's kernel, or possibly others.

Im on team eos JB and never faced any of the issues you mentioned above.. try flashing a different ROM after wiping everything...

zAlbee: Yes, I'm on a stock kernel. I just find it strange that it suddenly started Monday without any new kernel update from Asus.
udupa82: I saw that EOS is developed on the Xoom, did you had any other issue with that ROM? Which build did you use?

Widget Issues

I am and have been running Vegan 5.1.1 since day one with no issues other than the little quirks that have been discussed here. Anyway, lately when I load widgets all seems fine until I power down and then back up. The widget is just black and says "problem loading widget". I remove them and add again and all is well until I power down and back up again. Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Funny thing: a couple of days ago I started having the same problem, running TnT-lite 4.2.5.
Been busy over the weekend and didn't pick up my tab again until this evening, turned it on and experiencing it again; searching around in the forums for a fix.
Interesting. Most of other Android users get this after they move or install certain apps to SD, but on our tablet that option is non issue.
Will try clearing Dalvik-cache in CWM .8 and wipe cache see if that helps.

Just rebooted 3 times, without clearing anything and Widgets load fine. Hmmm.
What launcher?
Happens to me one in about every 30 starts. Gotten used to it so I just delete and reload widgets. Takes 30 secs. Think it might have something to do with when launcher starts in load sequence.
I've rarely seen this on ADW (both my DX and Tab). I just go into ADW settings and restart ADW.
I use Zeam as default, have LauncherPro and ADW installed.

Problem with ICS launcher

Hi guys!
I´ve just updated my TF101 to ICS and it´s really fast. But I have a problem with the laucher. Some times, when touch the home button to go to the homescreen, the laucher and all the icons desappear.
I can´t go to the apps that are open (with the multi-task button) but the launcher doesn´t appear.
The only solution I know is shuting down the Tf101 or closing the laucher app, but it is quite boring to do ir every 5 or 10 min.
Does it happen to anyone here?
Happens to me as well.

Same here... needs re-boot to recover...
I only had that if the option to kill tasks as u exit them was checked on. Its under developer options towards the bottom.
Edit: actually that's only the case on my phone. I have the option checked on my tablet and it works just fine.

Ok thanks for all I´ll re-boot it, but will I lose all my apps? I´ve never done a hard reset.
Everything that wasn't stock on the tablet will have to be reinstalled.

same here but may be able to narrow it down.
I am having the same problem. The whole screen just displays the wallpaper and removes any icons or buttons. So I can pan sideways and can sometime know what I am clicking on by memory but all icons go until I reboot.
weird thing is.... I have done a factory reset. reloaded my apps and settings. Its all working fine until I pop the Gmail and Calendar widgets on the screen, then boom. Gone again.
At the moment I am running without any widgets and I have not had a repeat. Do any of you clever clogs have any ideas on this one. Seems to be a small percentage of users with the issue.
Same...
I had the same problem however it seems to have stopped now. Perhaps as a result of my app purge that i did the other day.
Anyway for those still having this problem i suggest you use the notification bar to access the settings then from there you can go to the Launcher under apps and do a force close. after a bit it will reopen again with all screen icons and widgets back.
Guys I think this is the same issue, it happens on my tf.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1519943
yep
Happens to me too,
I managed to fix it the latest time without rebooting, by going into settings, running apps and stopping the launcher and anything google. Next time this happen I will make a note of which killed process gives me my app icons back.
also its strange that even with the app icons gone, you can still click around the screen and open things, as if they were there.
same ...
same problem on my tf101
I fixed this by clearing the data for the Launcher in settings. Hasn't happened since but annoying as it meant rebuilding my homescreens :-(

Nova
you should try Nova Launcher, it looks and acts like the default launcher in ICS. But with a couple functions added. I havent had any troubles with it.
Just search it in the market. to get the widgets to work just move it to /system/app
I installed ICS on mine at the weekend. For a couple of days it reasonably stable, though certain apps lagged somewhat. Then it got much, much worse. There's a recurrent problem with the launcher. If you've gone away from it, such as to use an app, and then return, firstly the widgets and stacked/grouped app icons vanish, then all the rest of the icons vanish, and the three squares on the top right of the screen. The icons are still there, as it's possible to stab on the screen in the right place and launch the app that the invisible icon links to. All five screens of the launcher have vanished. The tablet still runs, as the live wallpaper still runs, and the recent apps are accessible.
Other problems include major freezes or lags. It's common to go to launch email or the web browser only to have to wait 20 seconds or so before anything happens. I've had to wait 5 minutes before now for Opera to launch. Eventually the tablet will freeze and I have to reboot it, but even then, apps take an age to launch, and regularly freeze. It's getting to the point of being totally unusable. It's taken many, many attempts to write this email as the app crashes of its own accord, and perish the thought that I copy and paste any text in, including the email address - it's enough to crash the email app.
My TF101 ran Android 3.2 perfectly fine, and very, very quickly. It was gloriously stable. I can't get more than 2 hours of use out of this without having to reboot; this afternoon I've been having to reboot every 10 minutes.
I've drawn Asus' attention to these problems via Twitter and Google+, and I know they've been told about it on Facebook, but there's been a wall of silence.
Richard
I had the problem with a disappearing launcher on ICS on 4 different launchers. Recently I removed a few widgets (NewsRepublic, Bacon Reader, and DroidWidget) and haven't had the problem reoccur. Maybe some widget incompatibility is to blame?

Could be. Mine's more stable (touch wood) since I got rid of both Beautiful Widgets widgets off my home screen.
Guys I´ve finally done a hard reset on my tf and all goes fine.
Thanks for all
Same problem here with the stock ICS launcher. Using ADW Launcher EX without problems.
Some apps seems to be running super fast at times and then others super slow at times with ICS. Guess I'll do a Titanium backup and factory reset and see if that helps. ugh...

Applications taking forever to load

Basically what I'm experiencing is that at times, I'll click an icon for an app (it doesn't matter which app), and the entire TW launcher will freeze for about 10 seconds, doing nothing. Then, all of a sudden the application will appear and load normally. I've tried wiping normal /cache and Dalvik cache, and nothing helps.
Now when I say it freezes, I don't mean that the app loads and I see a white screen while it does it's normal loading process... what I mean is that I touch the "Twitter" app, and then my home screen completely freezes (I can't swipe to another screen or anything... it's just locked), and then 10 seconds later it decides to load stuff.
Let me say that I don't consider myself a noob. I'm very comfortable flashing ROMs, recoveries, doing nandroid backups, etc. I'm running CleanROM 2.0, and my bootloader is unlocked. I have CWM Touch 6.0.1.2 flashed from ROM Manager. This issue has happened on Synergy, too. AOSP ROMs seem to work just fine. I know it's not related to the TouchWiz launcher, because the same problem happens with Nova, too.
Right now I'm trying Imoseyon's LeanKernel 0.3 beta (non-kexec). Has anyone else experienced this problem? How do you fix it?
I just did. After I setup CPU profiles in ROM toolbox. I've used them before without issue. This time it was as you described. The solution was to reinstall ROM toolbox.
Perhaps you've recently used a program that directly interacts withe the kernel and perhaps its causing you woes

[Q] Keyboard not working, clocks not syncing. [Solved]

Solved! It looks like the culprit was the Smooth Calendar widget...
-------------------------------------------------------------
I've had a really bizarre problem that started a couple of days ago. At that time I was rooted on the stock ICS. The first thing I noticed was that the keyboards would stop working. They'd come up, but no matter where I tried using it - GMail, Dolphin, Talk, etc - no text would be entered. The kayboard keys would flash and the autocorrect fields would populate as if I was typing normally though. This happened with both the latest Swype beta and the stock touch input. The only fix was a reboot which would help for a little while.
The other issue was the clocks not syncing up. The clock widget on my homescreen would show the current correct time, but the clock in the notification bar would be stuck on any given time for up to hours.
Here's the weird part. These issues survived a data and cache wipe and the install of a different rom. I'm now using ViperS 1.6.0. Could this possibly be a hardware problem? Nothing unusual happened between it working fine and the problem starting. No new apps, no water exposure or drops, etc... The closest thing to a cause I can think of is that some app that I had and reinstalled today was updated a couple of days ago and the new version is doing it...
Any other ideas?

[Q] Why is my UI vanishing?

So, I've been having issues with my TF101 for a while now. At first I thought it was ROM related, but I've seen this issue across a couple different ROMs, including the stock ICS update. The issue is that frequently, the launcher will crash and restart when swiping off the main homescreen. Other times, the UI overlay will crash. That is to say, the icons and everything will vanish, but the background will still be there. Sometimes a widget might be frozen on the screen (it's visible regardless of swiping, and you can't interact with it). I can still swipe, the background is still visible scrolling, and if you know where something should be, you can even tap it and it will open. Has anyone else experienced this? I've noticed the issue in the stock ICS launcher, Apex, or Trebuchet. When it happens, I either have to restart or at least re-apply the system them. Even the lock screen UI vanishes.
FWIW, my TF101 is a B60 unit, rooted, running RaymanFX's CM10 (4.1.2) ROM, and TWRP.
So no one's seen this kind of issue before?
I have a similar problem. Hitting the "home" button (it never disappears) solves the problem, no need for other apps or reboot or anything. I just plain hit the home button and everything reappears.

Sometimes, my UI vanishes, but if I wait about 10 seconds or so, it comes back. I guess the launcher crashes, but is automatically restarted by the kernel. I use the K.A.T kernel, maybe that is better with the re-launch when it crashes?
