Try downloading an app called RecForge from the Google Play Store and record a short audio clip. If you don't hear any audio when playing it back then you may have a hardware issue and a legit reason to exchange it at the place where you purchased it.
Also, have you loaded a custom ROM on your device or are you using the stock OS?
Well yea I'm running a custom ROM
It only happens at work.

Which ROM are you running? Some of the earlier versions of CM10 had microphone issues that were causing what you are explaining.

Hey all... I'm going on vacation this weekend and wanted to bring my Captivate with me to use as a media player attached to my car's video system. I haven't used this phone for a few months now (upgraded to a new phone), so I'm wondering which of the newer Roms have the video out (or is it called TV out?) feature working? Would anyone recommend one over another? Phone features are unimportant, as the only thing I'll be using it for are video and maybe music. Rather than flashing a bunch of Roms, I thought I'd ask the forum to see if anyone has used this feature lately and can confirm that it works on "Rom _____"
Thanks in advance!

Recently I got a new vehicle (Toyota RAV4) so I connected my s3. Via Bluetooth. However every rom Ive tried, both tw and aosp have this crackle and pop (snap?) coming through the speakers. I dont know if this is a problem with the phone or the car or rom, kernel, etc but am looking for suggestions. Thanks.

I bought my first GS3 pre order. I had the same crackle coming through any Bluetooth device I used. Since I stream Sirius all day, every day it was a huge issue. So I called vzw and they replaced with a brand new one. But, I was within the first 15 days of purchase. They documented the issue so they should know that some units have this issue. Get it replaced.
I called Verizon and their answer was that it has been a reported issue and that they are working on it with Samsung. I asked about replacing it but their answer was that it would basically continue to happen with the new one they send me and a software issue is the key. Did your replacement fix the issue?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Had the same crackle when I first received my S3 with a headset, but not with veh or home dongles. VZW said it has to be the headset. Funny thing is it was only 2 months old and worked like a champ on my DX. Tried a couple of other devices, no problems. Last resort was a factory reset, just for the sake of trying it. Resync'd all BT devices and never had a problem since. Definitely not a confirmed fix, but if kicking the side of the TV worked for dad, I'll give it a try.
Verizon is sending me a new one. I explained that if this was such a small scale issue, then it must be hardware. Otherwise more people would have reported it. And If Im wrong then I'll still have a new unit and will wait for a software patch. Either way I win.

Edit: On a whim I loaded cleanROM and no Bluetooth crackle. This is amusing at best.

I found that I got rid of bluetooth crackle by increasing voltages on my custom kernels (i switch between lean kernel and ktoonz). Seems like certain S3s have this problem when running below certain voltages. Currently have my lowest voltages at 925mv and progressive increase with steps, but I read the normal magic number is 1150. Try increasing your base voltages to 1150 (if your on custom rom and kernel of course) and see if that fixes the problem. If it does, you can experiment with lower voltages until the crackle reappears, to find your phones sweet spot.

Have also seen it fixed with kernel changes.
Hmmm. I will try this..

So I received my replacement and it works perfectly as stock. I rooted and deleted a number of bloatware apps too.
There is no hiss or crackle from either the headset jack or Bluetooth media, Pandora or other third party apps.

So, I'm confused about this:
On CM10, Bluetooth didn't work AT ALL. But I don't know if the 10/12 nightly had the right bluetooth decoding values.
On LiquidSmooth, I could get some audio now, but with constant crackling.
On ParanoidAndroid, I get audio, no problems.
What's the difference here? Is it just voltages? Should I just ask Verizon for a new device? It's been 5 days since I activated this one.

Yeah, I thought I had it working until last night when it crapped out again.
I actually regret going from the iphone to android right now. No single phone seems to be well made.
By experimenting on my drive in, this is entirely related to voltages/CPU speed. I don't have voltage control right now, but just kept upping my core clock until the crackling stopped. Around 900mhz everything became fine. Below 900, BT audio would pop. BT calls would last a few minutes, before suddenly dropping from my car. The car would still show being connected to BT, but the call would suddenly be on the handset.

I can agree with your findings. I have had issue with the bluetooth audio crackling with multiple roms and kernels. I found that by increasing your min voltage to at least 1026MHz that it will make the crackling go away (I am running slim 2.7 / lk v1.4). On some CM10 builds (without flashing a custom kernel), I have noticed that I don't even need to set the min voltage and works just fine. I use bluetooth everyday (car/home/work) and it gets some what irritating when I have to set the min voltage higher every time I connect to bluetooth. Is there any way you can set a custom profile to set the min voltage? I currently use Rom Toolbox Pro and it does not have an option to choose a custom profile for bluetooth. I also tried SetCPU App but it does not seem to work when I set the custom profile with the music app that I use. Any ideas to set a custom profile whenever I connect to bluetooth? Any help would be much appreciated
Just call Verizon and explain your issue. I had the same problems on any Rom and I tested in on several vehicles. They shipped me a new one the next day and no issues.

Hey guys,
I keep getting fuzzy phone calls on my one XL running cleanrom 5, I'm on Fido in Toronto and I was wondering if anyone else had this issue! I don' want to send my phone in for repair or anything but I have tried flashing different radios, kernels and I still get the sames fuzzy ness! Could it maybe be cleanrom or do you think my phone speaker is messed up!?
Thanks!
Nandroid and try another ROM
Thanks I flashed paranoid ROM and it fixed my problem!

Is there a reason why on certain ROMs I get that fuzzy call quality? Its definitely not the hardware in the phone itself right!?

I am using android1234567 cm10.2 rom and have noticed that since being built with linaro.
I have been getting a robotic sound when making calls.
I need to turn the speaker on and off for the call to sound normal again.
this is something I used to get on albinomans cm10.1 and only started getting the issue with the 26/8 build of android 1-7
mms? google gallery?
Hey all,
first of all, android1-7, congrats for a great and super-fast rom!!! I really love it, especially the 624 version (yeah, chrome finally works ok ).
However, I've got some (minor) problems (and still cannot post in the original thread):
1) mms is not working for me. tried sending it to myself and after 4 days still nothing. any solutions?
2) i'd like to have google gallery (photosphere ) -- tried downloading it and installing and after a while it just says 'App not installed'. It worked on 4.0.4 rom; have tried two different apks, and still the same ...
3) i cannot change the maximum cpu frequency in 'performance'. it just stays at 1.5GHz. How to do that?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
cheers

Try to use a root file manager to rename gallery.apk under /system/app and install the 3d Gallery apk for HTC One play edition. This works for me but the photosphere is not as good as that in a new Nexus 7 probably because of less memory available.

I did a full wipe when first coming to this ROM. Now for every update I have been wipinig cache and dalvik only.
I just flashed the latest 27/8 build so I'll see how this goes I guess.

Oh. Mines only when I call others. I've never had it happen when answering. You could send a bug report to the dev and post in this thread and probably get a better response. Sorry man I can't help much :-/ maybe if you did a full wipe(everything besides sdcard, not just phone reset) and reflashed the newer version of the Rom. I doubt it, but I hope that helps haha

Full clean install of 3/09 and still have robotic voice issues when making calls.
Is quite frustrating to have to press loudspeaker button twice to correct the audio being heard through the speaker.
This for me is way more frustrating than a buggy camera.

That's a rom bug wait to be fixed
I don't know if this problem is rom specific, but..
for me to use usb tethering in windows I need to update the driver every time I want to use it.
then to get mass storage device back I again need to update the driver to recognise the phone.
this is something I didn't experience in the stock sense rom.
seems like the signal the pc is getting is confused and cant assign different drivers for different outputs from the phone???
I noticed that since 9/15 build the camera focus does not focus correctly

The One Mini seems to be having some microphone issues with the CyanogenMod. In my case Viber is very silent and people on the other end can barely hear me. Regular phone calls work fine but only if I'm not using hands-free, with the hands-free the mic problem appears again.
I'm waiting to see if this will be fixed once a stable version of the CM11 is released, we can't expect everything to be working flawlessly with nightly builds
