Standard SMS, GVoice and Talk in 1 inbox? - General Questions and Answers

is there a way to have all messaging in 1 app? i have a google voice number, but i don't use is anymore. just use gvoice for the visual voicemail. i use talk for chatting and the stock messaging through my carrier to text non-google friends. would be nice if everything was in 1 app.

[Q] [Android] Gmail text messaging & Gmail Phone calling?

Hello forum,
I use gmail frequently and there is a feature in their chat service that allow you to send text messages to phone numbers (I think for US and Canada only) for free.
Also another feature they have is called "call phone". Where you can make calls to phone numbers (Also I think within US and Canada only) for free.
Is there a way to use these features on Android phones?
Thanks,
I don't know about the text messaging but I know the phone call feature is available. If you download Google voice this will allow you to make Google calls.

[Q] Android user tied to GV

I use Google Voice exclusively because of savings on text messaging. Because of this, I need to have my phone dial out with my GV number as the outgoing number.
Android has seamless integration with GV (obviously because both are made by Google); iOS seems to have two system extensions that seamlessly integrate GV into its native dialer and messaging app.
From what I understand, WP7 doesn't have anything like this yet because there are OS limitations as to how tightly Google Voice could be integrated with the native dialer (though I don't mind if I could use a different text messaging app for my GV SMS). With the coming Apollo update and its promised Skype integration into the native dialer, do you think that Microsoft will open the APIs required to achieve a similar seamless integration of Google Voice like in iOS?
I use GoVoice app, which is an app (not integrated into the system), but it does the work. After going into the app, you can call or text someone without any hassle from your GV account.
Give it a try.
I've played around with the app in an AT&T store but obviously I can't get a proper experience unless I had a week or so with it.
I've heard some complaints are that the lack of integration is annoying, such that if you click a phone number that points to a text message, you will be sent to the default message app (which won't work if you rely exclusively on GV). Also, some people have said that it's not particularly consistent and is slow to turn on when you want to check an incoming message.
Do you use it exclusively as opposed to the native dialer?
i got rid of google voice, only because of the battery drain on android.
i just use google talk and beep.
google voice was easier though with my own number that could be texted like any other phone, but man it killed my battery.

[Q] Use Google Voice with Sliding Messenger Pro

I have Google Voice, and I want to be able to sms from Sliding Messenger Free - can't post the link because I am a new member but it is on the play store.
I am having trouble getting the number to show up as my google voice # for the recipient.
I have GV set to receive texts to sliding messenger, but when I go to sliding messenger to send one it displays my service number. It works fine for replying to messages though.
On Google Voice website I have it set to use my Google Voice number when sending sms so I don't know why it isn't working.

alternative google voice app?

I want to use MIUI on my note 2, but it makes google voice crash. are there any google voice alternative apps out there that can handle both texting and voicemail? I know fusion messenger can do texting but I don't believe it can do voicemail, so it's no good for me.

Google voice messaging support with hangouts

On my galaxy nexus, I used an app called messaging plus Google voice to optionally send text messages from my Google voice number (fo free).
It doesn't appear to be supported in Kit Kat, and surprisingly the new and improved hangouts doesn't support this either.
This was a great option for me to help manage my text messaging plan. Does anyone have an alternative?
- Thanks, Kevin

Why don't you use google voice app to send text messages from your GV number?

The other app had them (both google voice and regular text messages) consolidated in a single view. The gv interface lacks usability IMO, and hangouts seems like the perfect place. It is a shame that the messaging + gv broke in kit Kat.

In Google voice app on Android, Settings--> Sync and Notifications --> click Receive Text Messages" and select Messaging app.
Now, any text sent to the Google voice number will show up in Hangouts.
Sending is a little more complicated.
I can’t compose a new message in hangouts to a ‘new’ sender from my GV number(one that I haven’t received a message from into hangouts).
But if I send a message to my GV number (from an unrelated number), it shows up in my hangouts app with a seemingly random number (GV assigns a different intermediary number to each sender in GV – existing functionality)
If I now respond to that message in hangouts, it shows my GV number instead of my regular number.
True integration should be coming later this year though.

Thanks for the heads up. I had that set already, trying to get the other app to work. I guess I have not gotten any GV messages on my new phone! and thanks for the info on the future integration (I hope).

Also look for VoIP calling using hangouts later this year
The only real integration you can get until Google adds support, is through CyanogenMod 11. There is a framework modification called Voice+ that synchronizes your Google voice inbound/outbound messages to either the stock messenger or hangouts. It even automatically routes MMS through your phones real number.
Just to be clear this is what it does:
Your friend texts your google voice number > your default SMS app shows notification with their real number (not their GoogleVoice routing number) > you reply in your default sms app > they recieve the text from your Google Voice number.

Yeah, that is what the Messaging Plus GV app did (sort of) It was a stock replacement app and you managed everything from within it. GV conversations were a separate thread, but the originating number did not change.
- Thanks, kevin

i just purchased this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.klinker.android.messaging_donate
and it works with GV. you still have to have the GV app installed.
NOTE: its a separate messaging app
