Best sim unlock method - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

Hi,
I've just used revolutionary to get S-OFF. I had the HBOOT 1.44.0007. (Do you confirm the best solution with this hboot was to use revolutionnary?)
Ok so, now, which is the best method to unlock sim? There are too many ones
- reading a partition to get the unlock code in return (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20203905&postcount=3)
- downloading a zip file to use from bootloader (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272085)
- other, older ones.
I heard the 1st one sometimes gives connectivity troubles, i'd like the second one, but it's old. So, any answer?
Thank you!
Edit : i post a new thread, because nothgin's said about sim unlocking in the resume (sticky post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254518)

The 1st one is the safest one and does not cause connectivity errors. Cause basically your just extracting the unlock code from the partition itself. You would be using the same unlocking method as tmobile instructs you.
2nd one is probably the one which will cause problems since basically your overwriting files there which might render your phone unstable.
But take note the 1st one might not work so you're stuck with the 2nd option if you can't get a code from tmobile.

Thank you,
Ok so i applied method 1 successfully (i was lucky, i had the code). I didn't want too much to go with method 2...
Now i remember the cons of method 1: it may keep asking you for unlock code from time to time :| We'll see...

Really? Well not happening on me... Already had the device for almost 3 weeks now. Using it outside US and unlocked using method 1 also.

I don't recall anyone for our device not having the code - though I know on some other models of phones this is the case.
Anyone out there not have the code on their device?
...And glad you got it working!

I unlocked mine using the code I got from T-Mobile. It has been 3 months now, it has never required entering the code again even though I've flashed other ROMs, swapped SIM several times. By entering the correct code, it should never need to do that again unless you somehow overwrite the partition containing the code with an "unlocked" image. You would have to go to some lengths to do that, it wouldn't be accidental.

Yeah I actually don't have the code on my device. I tried the first method some time ago and couldn't get it so I gave up. It wasn't anything I needed, it would have just been nice to be sim unlocked

Well guys, I'm beginning to feel a little remiss in not having even fooled with unlocking the sim card. Will that mean I will be able to bounce off other carrier's towers/signals when I'm in an area that TMobile doesn't carry or pick up a 3G signal where someone else has that & Tmo doesn't?? (There is quite a bit of that out here where I'm at)!

No it will still be the same. Your phone can detect cell signals from any network it's just that it won't allow itself to connect. And if you unlock it you would be allowing the phone to connect to any cell signal but problem is your sim card won't accept it so still the same. Won't have any effect on you if your a tmobile subscriber.

IS there a way then? Could I just go out and buy another sim card that isn't locked into a carrier, per se? Or is that even a possibility? And if not, is the only real benefit the fact that I won't be roaming. As you can see, I'm a bit confused. I did a Google search and read a few articles about it & was under the impression I understood somewhat. I guess I was wrong. That happens alot! LOL

No there's no generic sim card which would allow you to connect to any network. Unless ofcourse 2 networks team up to each other and decided to let each use their corresponding cellsites(happened here on our country).

SIM unlock will simply allow the use of another carrier's SIM card. Say you decided to travel to Ulan Bator. T-Mo roaming there would be horrendously expensive. But since you SIM unlocked your device you can pop in the SIM card you bought on the T-Mongolia network and proceed to order a pizza without spending $150 in roaming and long distance charges.
It's great for traveling internationally. The device will still be limited by the bands it can receive and may get only EDGE or lower speeds (sorry T-Mongolia) but you still get to use the device. Same domestically on AT&T.

Thankfully, I discovered that China Unicom here in mainland China uses the same frequencies for HSPA+ that T-Mobile US uses. So, I'm getting the high-speed data here, though it isn't nearly as fast as T-Mobile back home.

It won't be possible to get a sim card that isn't locked to any carrier. Carriers are in fact the ones who sell the simcards so I don't really think they would allow their simcards to connect to other networks not unless they are on a roaming service.

Are they 2G/3G/4G frequencies this phone can't handle? I'm speaking about frequencies around the world.

It depends on the frequencies the provider operates on. If they match what the phone is capable of utilizing you will probably be good to go.

For 2G (and 2.5G "EDGE") you are good anywhere there is a GSM signal. That means most everywhere in the world. For 3G (and HSPA+ "4G"), the MT4GS can use the 1700 and 2100 MHz spectrum. Not all GSM carriers use those (for instance AT&T uses 850 and 1900). Here in China, China Telecom uses the 1900MHz spectrum for HSPA+, but China Unicom uses the 1700MHz spectrum so my MT4GS can use the high speed data on that carrier.
So, just check beforehand the country you plan to visit and see what frequencies the carriers there use. Then you will know which one to buy a SIM from.

Argh.
Why don't they simply make phones capable on any used frequency. I'm sure the list remains short, and it wouldn't cost 3$ more.

There are some phones that are more easily used in a multi spectrum demand situation. The unbranded GSM GNEX I think is pentaband and is quite a capable international phone. It is just not able to run on any freq (governments like to regulate stuff like electromagnetic spectrum).

i dont believe g2x has 850mhz UMTS HSPA

I am from Vancouver bc. I am on the Bell network. Which operates from HSPA network only. Rogers is the only provider in Canada to have both gsm/edge and HSPA networks operational.
I bought a g2x, branded tmobile on the front itself and unlocked from a trusted source that I have repeatedly bought phones from. I get a new android cell phone every two months or so. Im familiar with setting up apn and so on.
The bell sim I use cannot find the bell network upon any kind of search. I can only find Wind and Mobilicity networks and they are AWS. I've tried reseating the sim and so forth, all fail. The sim works fine in my unlocked at&t atrix and Telus milestone.
I borrowed a rogers sim and it was able to register on the 2g network only. I entered the rogers 3g apn but it would disconnect when I put it on wcdma mode. Im convinced that either I have a broken umts radio or a faulty unit or tmobile screwed up. Looking for suggestions please and thanks .

imma keep this too about 3 lines if i can....
it has to have 850mhz its stated by the FCC that it does... (google specs)
and if it didnt... tmobile would have a law suit.... please if you will give us this "trusted source"
and when did you get the G2x?
I'm sure Tmo didnt lie, the phone has to pass the FCC in the US for the bands they will use, so Im sure Tmo knows what bands it's capable of. they wouldnt mismark the box.
Sounds like whoever unlocked it didn't do it properly maybe.
interesting...
only reason i was interested in the phone was the fact that it supported UMTS HSPA and AWS. wanted to use it on rogers but also wind down the road.
I got it this afternoon. The source is a guy I know that buys devices from the states and brings them up to sell. I bought several phones from him his year. I only wish this worked. The unlock definitely works or otherwise it wouldn't work on ROGERS' edge network.
when you put in #*#*4636*#*# into the dialer, what options do you have under Phone Information?
any options for WCDMA only?
Are there any *# codes that have been figured out for the G2x that might get you to a "Select Bands" menu? Maybe all you need to do is find a special menu and turn on the bands.

not to call you a liar but even if your "source" ordered the phone friday with the saturday shipping... how the **** did you get it through customs in one day?

i shipped a 3 oz package to Toronto and it took 4 days... FROM WISCONSIN?!?!?!?!?!
Since ATT and Tmo haven't merged yet it could be locked out of the baseband right now too- to be unlocked by a software update after the merger.

Well that's the point, its still a year out at least. There'd be no reason to have a carrier branded phone unlocked to those bands yet until if/when it does happen.
If so it was a Tmo decision. And itd be a simple radio update in the form of an OTA update to unlock the bands, nothing too major.

very true but most phones/devices that carry dual basebands are not locked to a carrier that i know of
There are lots of variables though. The baseband software may have just not been ready yet. They may want to keep it locked pending approval of the ATT deal, merely was put there are a precaution to not have an outdated device if it does go through.
Too many variables, but it for sure has those bands. Anyone can go to the FCC page and look up the tests.

It's too early to freak out, one person in Canada's having an issue with one G2X. T-Mobile would be insane to advertise the phone as quad-band and allow the media to report it that way if it's not really offered. If they didn't advertise it, but it had the capability, that would be another story. I'm sure a bunch of people are going to try and use it on AT&T over the new few days/weeks. Let's see what happens then.
I sincerely hope that whoever ordered for at&t purposes that it's only my device having issues.
I tried the #*#*4636*#*# but it only shows "mobile network not found ". My sim card is in there. Perhaps they will unlock the basebands somehow on the 20th.........

Besides SIM unlocking you need to perform the US band unlock as described both here, on Rootzwiki, and who knows where else, to use the DROID2 GLOBAL on AT&T or T-Mobile.
As AT&T uses standard WCDMA bands, yes, it will work with their 3G voice/data network as long as the band unlock hack is in place.

I doubt there are a lot of band unlocked D2Gs on sale as reflashing the SBF image breaks the hack.
You can perform the hack yourself provided you buy a SIM unlocked device.
Refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22769743 for instructions. Do note that whenever you soft-brick your device you will need to SBF back to 2.4.x and apply this hack.
Remember to never ever update the device to 4.5.629.
Thanks. Hopefully I get lucky but its Greta to have that link

Dumb phone plan from who? If you get everything done (band unlock as described in the other posts) you can use your phone with an AT&T SIM and don't need any plan at all from Verizon. Is the theory that AT&T won't recognize it as a smart phone because it is not one that they ever sold?

Any non-carrier-locked GSM phone that has compatible bands can work on AT&T's network. You don't even need a list, just check which bands AT&T uses and check the phone's tech specs.

I think the problem is that people don't want AT&T to recognize the phone as a smartphone and helpfully add on a data package on postpaid plans, (presumably these people are intending to use Wifi for data). The claim was made that some people had moved a SIM from dumb phone to a smartphone purchased elsewhere, and suddenly they got billed for a data package. See, for example, http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/can-at-t-really-add-a-pricey-data-plan-onto-your-wireless-bill/2667
In the past, there were posts saying that you were "safe" if you used a model that AT&T had never sold, as their system would not be able to recognize it as a smartphone. Not sure how true this really is!
They probably detect it based on IMEIs. But yeah, it's just a speculation without clear facts.

Thanks. I was afraid of that. Do you know of any reliable way to set APN's on jellybean or KitKat?
nTelos has LTE launched in a few markets, and now they are selling LTE devices in Richmond even though the LTE network isn't up. (Phones are running on 3G). In theory, if the device is unlocked, you should be able to put an nTelos LTE SIM in the device and it should work. (I went by my local Richmond store and got a SIM card for my iPhone 5 and upgraded my wife's S2 to a Moto X). I can switch the SIMs back and forth between the two devices with no issues. I am trying to find someone with an unlocked N5 here in my area to test my theory, but the only person I know who has one is on T Mobile, and we work opposite schedules, so it's almost impossible to meet up.

You might not have to wait as long as you think. nTelos has launched LTE in Bluefield and Bexley in WV. The person who I spoke with also said that the remainder of the network should be launched by EOY 2014. I saw on an investor relations report that the actual claim is 70% POP coverage. The rumor that the rep told me was hopefully June/July for LTE here in Richmond.

Once you do meet up, the T-mobile / Unlocked aspect shouldn't really be an issue as the T-mobile device is the same unlocked device that everyone else in North America has. So far, no locked N5's have turned up

Yep, but theory and practice are 2 different things
I do like the snap dragon 800 though, meaning there is only a requirement to have 2 devices worldwide. I'm pretty sure soon, qualcomm will be able to support more than the maximum 7 on one radio chip and maybe soon we'll start to see one worldwide device per release. That would be great. Until some other country decides to shun global standards and invents their own band

I do. I am an nTelos dealer and flasher with my own flashing site going live as we speak. It can be done if you have CDMA workshop, otherwise I take mail-ins.
That's awesome! Link to your site? I'll check out when I can. I actually do have CDMA Workshop but no idea how to use it or what all I need to set up on the phone with it. I was afraid to go ahead and buy the phone because I didn't know if I could get it working.
Ok... So I had a friend attempt to try a Sprint variant of the N5 which he got at Best Buy... No dice. Couldn't figure out the carrier settings and it wouldn't make calls either. I tried a Play Store edition yesterday... Also, no dice. Same situation.... I have another friend that works at T Mobile that is going to grab one for me to try. I'm not giving up hope!!! I'm sure there is a way to get it to work, but when you go to network settings, if only allows you to connect to AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T Mobile and 311 660 which I think is Metro PCS. There has to be a way to change the settings to be able to recognize the nTelos SIM card. The N5 supports CDMA Band Classes 0/1/10 and LTE bands 2/4/25, which should cover nTelos.... Not sure if the device is domestically locked to those certain carriers, and the international version would be a better try (I think it is only GSM though), but if someone can brainstorm a work around, I'd love to hear it!
Ok... Here we go... I might have stumbled upon something here on XDA that might help us out. I'm still researching it, but I wanted to post my findings here so that if anyone else s interested in looking into it, you can. You may have already seen this, and someone here commented about CDMA Workshop, and that is involved, so maybe (s)he could chime in and give us a helping hand as well?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2619312
This looks to be a trial and error guide. I MAY be able to get my hand on some of the files that may be needed with a little digging around and some schmoozing with nTelos employees, so we will see what happens.
I posted in that thread to see if it will only operate on CDMA, or if it will switch over to LTE when it goes live (as long as there is a sim card in it). Waiting on a reply, so hopefully we will hear something back soon!

Ok well good deal! I hope you can get it working. Little word of advice though, all the phones are the same. Sprint, Play Store, doesn't matter they're the same.
Ok, well, I have gotten my hands on a Verizon S3 (boo for the locked bootloader), and when I throw my nTelos SIM card it in, it works for talk and text immediately, which isn't surprising, b/c the device is unlocked. You do get the Non-Verizon SIM message in the notification bar though. Well, anyways, I was able to take my jailbroken iPhone 5 and use an APN editor and recover the APN settings for it. I entered those into the S3 and BLAM! It worked! Data kicked over immediately!
Now here's my thought process... The S3 took the SIM for talk and text without issue, while the N5 wouldn't even read for that.... Even though the N5 is supposedly unlocked, could it still be locked down to the bigger providers, and not allow a SIM card from a smaller carrier, such as nTelos? I have heard of rumors of AIO Wireless SIM cards working, but that is an AT&T MVNO. I haven't seen anywhere posted that someone from, say, Alaska Wireless, or Cspire, or Republic Wireless using the N5.
Now, if there's a way to "unlock" the device to work with additional carriers, that would be great, but I'm not sure where to start even looking for any of that information. most comments you read about the N5 state that it is unlocked to use anyone's SIM card, which obviously isn't true. The phone seems like it wants to pre-configure itself with the SIM card. I did see a thread somewhere that people are able to get the N5 to work on Straight Talk on LTE with redoing the APN settings.
I need to get my hands on another N5 and replace the APN settings with the nTelos LTE APN settings and see if that works. If I can get that done, I'll let everyone know!!!
Ok... Here we go again... I'm posting here more of a "think out loud" type of post. I was digging through the Nexus 5 Q&A thread, and I came across something that might help out. *#*#4636#*#* That is supposedly how you get into the settings for an LG device to be able to change it's network type. I'm wondering that since I missed doing that with the last one that I had my hands on, if that might be why it didn't read my SIM card. I went by my local nTelos store last night to see if it worked on all LG devices since they have the F7 on display. I was able to go in and change it while I was playing with the phone. Some of the settings completely borked the reception, which is what I was hoping, but others worked just fine. I'm going to try and go by a local Best Buy later today and try it out on a display model there to see what I come up with. I'll post back here once I figure something else out.

[Q] [K2_PLC, Cricket]Cricket 4.2 MSL thingy is weird?

So I was messing around in the ##3282# settings, and I clicked "Edit Mode". I thought, "Well, let's guess." I inputted six zero's, and to my surprise, it was the correct MSL code. I don't know how this is but now I can edit the stuffs. Also, this phone has Band 25 LTE 0_0 I didn't know that. Can any of you Cricket users verify that this is only me?
MSL Reader (see the play store) gives it to you if you are properly rooted. Its how I retrieved mine. But I know six zeros won't work on K2_CL lol.

So, there's a bunch of stuff I can do now with the PRLs hehehe
Maybe I can flash to T-Mobile, they have a $30 5GB unlimited plan. (Prepaid, and SIM Card)

I dont know all the specs behind it cause there was tons and tons of info and I kinda spiderwebbed out of control reading it. But the jist I got is this PRL's APN's and all that get more credit then what they are deserved. Yes to have a proper one is beneficial but its more about the codec's the radio signal of the phone and towers your connecting to and the system files in your phone itself that will allow you to do what you need to. I am still piecing things together but I am working on a finalized cricket fix to allow the use of LTE, the use of gsm or cdma and the use of European roms. It has become quit the undertaking but before you jump in and start changing files that were initially fine I would properly educate your self on the pros and cons changing the prl.
As of yet I am pretty sure Tmobile wont flash the phone nor will our phone work on the Tmobile network

Lol I was just going through threads and it's also helpful info for others as well
I have an HTC one SV from Cricket, I like the phone but am not "In love" with it. My problem is this- I just bought the phone then changed providers due to poor service at my address. Since my phone has a SIM card I thought I could switch to AT&T but the phone never accepted the new SIM. AT&T couldn't find out why, Cricket told me their was no unlock code, HTC said it wouldn't work until they ran the date of manufacture and MEID# then all changed.HTC told me to get the msl and I can change the network settings so I I can use GSM instead of CDMA. Any warnings, advice or instructions?? Out of severe stubborn motives, if at all possible I want this HTC on GSM just to prove that I can lol.

[Q] Phone Thinks I Am Roaming

Hello,
I bought my HTC Sensation about a year ago on Ebay. The seller claimed the phone was purchased outright and paid off. I checked the imei and it showed clean. When I got it, I popped my Airfire sim card into it and it worked fine. A month ago, I switched to Cricket as Airfire was going out of business. Cricket made me enter my imei. It said it was bad. I called T-Mobile and they said the seller defaulted on payments. They refused to help in any way. They told me to buy the phone direct from them next time. I told them I had proof I was buying it in good faith. They didn't care and apparently have no problem punishing the victim.
Anyways, when I got my Cricket sim and popped it in, my phone said I was roaming. It has said I was roaming for a full month now. I can send and receive calls, but my data is stuck at EDGE and some of the programs don't work since the phone thinks its roaming. I need to have "data roaming" enabled for data to work. Cricket ran some tests and eventually said I needed to do a factory reset.
So, I switched from the Android Revolution rom to the ViperS 5.2.1 rom. I did a full dalvik and cache wipe and reformatted everything but the sd card. I installed the new rom and kernal. Same thing. Phone still says I am roaming. Odd thing is, when I go to manually select carrier, my options are Cricket (current carrier), Airfire (previous carrier) and TMobile (stock carrier). Also, when I am using data, it has an "E" above the data. E is what Airfire used. Is there somehow somewhere a place that the phone is storing info through wipes?
I am s-off, rooted and debranded. I sim unlocked the phone myself. I am so stuck and think that only one of the geniuses on XDA are my only hope. I have went mental spending hours and hours on this. Some XDA peeps are smarted than HTC and Cricket combined, so please help me out here.
Thanks,
Grant

Hi grant, this is a very odd situation your in. With my sensation when I leave the UK and connect to another EU "partner network" is the only time my phone would jump into roaming mode. Is it possible that cricket is not directly supported in your area? Maybe they rent their local connection from another carrier and thats why your getting connected as roaming? Have you tried any other sim cards to see if they come up as roaming?

Hi heavy_metal_man
I am quite sure that At&t is Cricket's parent company so all of the towers should be At&t's networks. Also, I have checked it when in other cities and I get the same message, though I haven't traveled more than 30 miles away.
The previous sim with AirFire worked fine. I also popped out the sim for Cricket and put it in my mom's phone to see if it was the sim. Her's worked fine. She got the automatic Cricket update settings right away and was not roaming. Mine never got the Cricket pop-up so I had to manually enter all of the data info. Yes, odd indeed and I am lost.

OK, the info your adding manually, is that the same info as is registered when the card is in your mums phone? Same APN etc?

Hi heavy_metal_man. Yup. Same info. Only difference is that the info all loads automatically on hers. I do get automated texts from Cricket when I put the sim in my phone as did she, but I had to get the APN info from Cricket the first time because it didn't auto load. I am still wondering if it is a sim issue, but I expected my mom's phone to be roaming when I put the sim in hers. I was shocked when it wasn't. She just has a free stock phone from Airfire btw. Nothing fancy and nothing done to it.

Hmm. Are those 3 carriers the only ones available to you? I think the imei may be key here, if cricket know its a T-Mobile phone they may register that you are roaming. I think your previous carrier (airfire) was a Virtual mobile network, much like giffgaff in the UK ( which runs on the o2 network.) As such they may not have inforced the same imei policy's that cricket does. But this is just a hunch as I am on UK networks and we do things much differently. If you could ask about any friends and colleges that have different carrier simcards from our previous 3 you could gauge what carriers your phone is compatible with.
Worst case scenario you could maybe buy another broken htc sensation and perform a motherboard swap. This would solve your imei issue, assuming that it was the primary issue. But check the simcards first and report back

Hmm... There are only 3 carriers available. Should there be more? It's not tied to the sim? Everyone I know either still has Airfire and plans on switching to Cricket or has cdma so I have been out of luck with trying another sim. The only other thing I thought about was 4ext recovery. No matter what I flash; roms, kernals, firmware or radios, the recovery always survives of course. So, if the previous carriers are surviving the flashes, perhaps there is a place on the phone like the recovery where they are surviving.

Its unlikely to be to do with the recovery, no reason for it to keep anything like that. It's most likely the phones imei at this point, though im unsure as to why this was not an issue for airfire.
Do you know what firmware version you have? Have you flashed 3.33 by yourself?

Yup, I flashed 3.33 universal after doing a super Cid. Well, maybe its time to just get a new phone, although I would really like to figure out this problem first. I am not the kind of person who can just drop things, lol.

I know how you feel. Maybe its because they cricket know the sensation 4g is a T-Mobile device and force you into roaming mode by default. I think its possible to overwrite the devices mid and cid, flash a sensation XE rom and effectively have a sensation XE. But such things can be quite dangerous and i couldn't say for definite if it would work to fix your issue :/ (not recommending anyone tries this without proper research and understanding :/)
Can you get access to another cricket sim without a contract? Just for testing?

I believe I have already done that. When I go into info about my phone, it says Sensation XE. It also registers as Sensation XE in the Google play store. I was thinking about telling Cricket to send me a new sim. Otherwise, I have no access to one at this time.

I think that it would be your best bet, although your device is probably showing up on the play store as an XE because of its build.prop from your custom rom, not any advanced MID changes. although you can check by using the command
Code:
fastboot getvar all
this will show your your mid, cid and your imei among other things.

I've worked it out! Its a frequency issue. Cricket apparently only support cdma frequency's, while the sensation only uses gsm frequency's. So in order to connect your phone is bunnying onto a local gsm service, which is then redirecting you to cricket. Hence the roaming! If you want off the data roaming you will need to either swap to a different phone carrier or buy a cdma phone

Hi heavy_metal_man,
Cricket did use CDMA for most of the time, but they have switched to GSM. They send a sim now and are trying to switch all of their old customers to GSM. What I am having trouble figuring out is what frequencies they use. Perhaps my phone is not quite compatible. I am having trouble with that as well. GSM arena, Phonescoop and the other major sites kind of have different data as far as my phone goes. My phone is called "HTC Sensation 4G" as far as I know. Yet, they list no 4g capability or frequencies. Of course, I believe that would only affect data and I still should not show as roaming.
I have been unable to figure out fastboot since switching to the viper rom. It doesn't use usb mass storage anymore. It uses the new system in which the whole phone is recognized as a storage device by the computer. Forgot what they called it. I wish they hadn't changed it, and apparently Windows 7 should recognize it by default, but it does not. I am sure if I get enough time to put into it I will figure out how to use the fastboot commands again.
I am ready to give up and just get a new phone pretty soon. Would be nice if Cricket's customer service wasn't so worthless. It could still be the IMEI or something on their end that I can do nothing about but they have failed to provide any solution.

Sorry for my delayed reply, I noticed that cricket swapped out to gsm and I discovered that their gsm tech is actually supplied at&t as they bought them out.
So I looked at their coverage map for the area airfire operated and I noticed that they had 2 or 3 area that were only providing 3g support via a partner, so I assume that would put you into roaming. It might be worth a look at their map and confirm if you reside on one of these black areas ?
