What would be the safest phone to get to use for developing custom Roms? Currently my phone is a Samsung galaxy S3. I would like to play with custom Rom development on another phone where the risk of bricking it is low, and won't have to worry about messing it up.
My guess would be a phone/tablet with an unlocked boot loader? Or a nexus?

Um there's no such thing all android phones/android software is built on a Linux kernel so go with the official developers phone Samsung galaxy nexus

That's what i thought, wish i could find my old sgs, let my son use it, and now it's disappeared.

I don't think any of them have unlocked bootloaders.I would be nice if they did.

Hi everyone, I was just wondering about how devices that won't get an update to ICS get a custom ICS ROM and almost all ways the Camera doesn't work cause the manufacturer hasn't releases a driver or something. Well can somebody explain that to me in more detail so I know exactly why my camera doesn't work. Cheers
Sent from my YP-G70 using xda app-developers app
Its probablynot the driver but the Custom rom that u install to phone. Not all custom roms have fixed the camera and media storage. The one i am using right now is custom rom JB and some times my camera do not work.
So is there a way to bring back the camera?
Sent from my YP-G70 using xda app-developers app
Not without the kernel source code and proper drivers. This is the biggest issue.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using Tapatalk 2
So Samsung haven't realesed the source code for the wifi 5.0? Sorry for asking so many questions I'm just interested.
Sent from my YP-G70 using xda app-developers app
Yes without an official update there is no source code for the kernel and no proper drivers for the camera
Sent from my Inspire 4G using Tapatalk 2
That's a shame. Stupid Samsung always leaving devices behind. I like their hardware only.
Sent from my YP-G70 using xda app-developers app
This is the way of android. With Tue advances in hardware as well as software. Any OEM will be hard pressed to keep a phone officially updated for more then 6 months

This is why I like Google's phones and Google them selves. They seem friendly if you know what I mean. Always willing to help. Imagine if Samsung had invented Android! It wouldn't be open source for a start. And devices would be out of date with software before people could actually buy them! Samsung need to get their act together.

Is there a stable Paranoid Android for the Galaxy Note 10.1? I looked on Google and found results, but I wasn't sure if the files were stable and whatnot. I will be getting a note 10.1 for Christmas and I don't really like TouchWiz, so I thought I would start looking for a good, clean stock ROM before I get it. Thanks for the help!
Anybody?
Sent from my Xperia Play using xda app-developers app
You want stock for s note and multi window. If you won't use those, return it and get a nexus 10.

The problem is, I can't return it because I won it at a raffle. I can deal without the multi window and s-pen. So is there a stable stock android ROM?
No.

Is there a blue folder available for the s3? I'm using the Galaxy mod ROM now and really like it but I'd like to keep checking out new rooms. Is there a convenient way to boot up another rom without having to wipe out what I'm running?

It gets me all the time too! But as of now there is not, there are some in the works from what I hear. So right now the easiest way is to make a backup and flash then just restore when you're ready to go back
Sent from my VS920 4G using xda app-developers app
Yes unfortunately no Boot Manager yet. Init2winit apps is unable to support the app anymore. The good news is that they are currently trying to find a reputable dev to take it over. Hopefully someone will.

I was really excited when it came out for the droid x. I bought it and really never used it, it just didn't work right. Cool idea but never work for me. I am sure the dx having a locked bootloader really held it back.

Thanks for the feedback. i used safe strap 3 for my motorola razr it allowed you to create a seperate boot partition, boot into recovery and choose the active-one . Is there something similar?

Thinking about swapping my Droid DNA for a Galaxy S3 and $50. My Droid is freshly unlocked, rooted and s-off all using my Mac 10.6.8 with ADB commands. The Droid is also factory unlocked for any GSM SIM including att and T-Mobile. My issue is I can't find a way to root and unlock the S3 so I'm on the fence about swapping and of course losing this amazing Quad core krait power. Advice?

Get the S3 and to root and unlock the bootrom, you must use the Casual Rootkit. It will root your S3 and install Teamwin recovery. Trust me, it is worth it.

Go look at the Casual Toolkit thread and look at the issue I'm having. I'm the last post on there. Unless I can fix the issue, I can't get the phone because I can't root it. :/

Do you have stock ROM or a different ROM?

Because my S3 on VZW is rooted fully and Unlocked.
My Droid is custom. I haven't traded for the S3 yet because I can't get casual to run on my mac. The casual thread has the errors its giving me.

So, just traded my 3 week old DNA for a BRAND NEW S3. I'm sure I lost money on the trade but I feel at home with the S3. Now on to my problem, rooting it with a Mac or Linux (run from a live CD). advice?

Is your Mac on 10.8? If so, using Casual from Beanstown106 will work. You'll need Java 7 installed for Casual to work. I almost encourage you to use the Casual 634 from the Verizon GSIII section on Rootzwiki instead of the Casual 734 linked in the dev section of XDA. There seems to be some issues with r734 recognizing the device is connected but it can work even so.
Alternatively, you can do the manual route using Open1your1eyes0 root thread in the dev section. It requires Odin which works great on Windows, is incompatible on Mac, and idk about Linux.

I'm not sure you'll be getting Casual to work on your setup. Maybe try the manual method by Open1your1eyes0 or the toolkit by mskip. Like I said there, if these don't work then you might want to find a spare laptop when available and knock this out.
Can I use the Odin method with heimdall?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Cause I MIGHT be able to get heimdall working on my Mac....but I have never used heimdall in the past, I've always used Odin.

Its possible, but there is no documentation/thread that I know of that goes into detail for this device. Might have to look on the other carrier models for threads. Everyone always uses Odin.
Damn :/

Motochopper? Wasn't that for Motorola devices? Just asking general questions, what prompted you to try that?
Yes, you do need to be unlocked to flash roms. Are you positive you are rooted? Do you have working SU or SuperSU? If so, download EZ Unlock v1.2 from Rootwiki and press unlock.
Actually, I Google "root Verizon s3 4.1.2" and his exploit works on all american galaxy s3's

I still have months to go before I can upgrade, but, unless Samsung come out with something mind blowing before then I'll be looking at other possibilities. particularly a Google flagship!
My question is this - I use Odin to root a Samsung. It's very straight forward to do. In comparison how difficult\different is it to root a nexus?

Nexus device are as easy to root, just like samsung devices. Although, now that they have Nox(security) I don't know how easy it will be in the future..

Thanks mate. Yeah I read is using selinux secure mode now. Will be interesting.
Try thanking you but the XDA app is playing up and I'm on a bus so can't get to a PC.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
It's extremely easy. I don't normally recommend using a tool kit and prefer the old fashion way. It's already so simple as it is. Install drivers, fastboot oem unlock.
Done. Samsung Odin is equivalent to fastboot but better and less buggy than Odin.

I feel like this won't be much issue. People buy a Nexus because it's open and you can play with stuff. I feel like too many people would be pissed at google if this actually had any real affect on things.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
Yeah it's as easy as 3 or 4 commands in fastboot.
OEM unlock
flash recovery
flash ROM / kernel
Done.
