New GS3 Owner wants root - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey guys. New to this phone but not rooting. Looking for most recent unlock and root method with working download links pls. Search brought up many variables.
Thanks!!

Start with the thread that's stickied in the dev section. The one that says 'how to root'
Pretty sure that's why they sticky them. So you can easily find and everyone doesn't have to ask questions like this.

There's only two stickies in the dev section. Neither are about rooting...

My bad. Was looking in wrong dev section. Thanks!

Make sure to read about backing up your IMEI before flashing Roms.

I just rooted my phone two days ago with this method. It was simple and easy to do and shortly after I flashed cm10.

Help root

My buddy who always roots my phones moved. I can someone please tell me what I need to do to get my att hox able to flash roms? I know the one click root but then what? Sorry In advance if this is a repetitive topic.
check out the development section for this phone. Everything you need to know will be there. Read up before you attempt anything. Make sure you understand the process. Help is always available here, just search first and I'm more than positive you will have success.

Everything you need is in the Development subforum, as mentioned.
To see the threads in a organized index, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
In particular, check out the links under "Root", and also the guides near the bottom of post #1.
Just start reading up as much as you can. If things still seem unclear after reading, and doing some searches, come back and ask specific questions.
I would learn adb and go the manual route. The guides are easy to follow. I never seem to have success with the one click root method on 1.85. If you're on 1.73 then use the one click.

help with root (htc sensation)

I'm on stock ics I have unlocked my bootloader. I tried rooting it through all in one kit but my phone reboot and stay on the HTC logo screen intill I take the battery out and restart it but its not rooted still. I follow the guides accordingly but can't require root. After unlocking bootloader do I need to s off first then root please help I can even pay
wrong section, you n00b.
flash a rooted custom rom via recovery, and you have the root access. you don't need to root until you want to keep your stock rom
read more, follow guides and watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmvCpR45LKA
delete this thread.
thread shouldn't be here and there's tons of noob friendly guides to show you.
but to answer your question yes S-Off first

It is the wrong section because unlocking the phone or rooting it belongs in Q&A as you are asking a Question and need an Answer to get your problem solved.
It isn't a collaboration of people finding a way to make a s-on phone permanently s-off or unlocking a bootloader or giving it engineering capabilities for all of XDA. Therefore nothing is being developed.

as kohr-ah said it is in wrong section
and coming to the topic
as you are htc-dev unlocked
try my one click root tool..from my soff guide (link in my signature)
if you've unlocked your bootloader it should say (unlocked) at the top of the bootloader screen. you dont really need to s-off your phone just yet, if your phone has updated to ics it will already have the latest firmware already installed, so if i was you id install adb/fastboot then just use fastboot to flash your recovery instead of jumping to s-off you dont want to be messing that up
I think your in the wrong place if you have questions there's q&a part that you need to go

This is from the very first thread stating the rules for this forum
[MANDATORY] RULES FOR DEVELOPMENT Updated 21.03
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS FORUM IS ONLY FOR RELEASING AND DEVELOPING ROMS AND KERNELS.
SOME GUIDES REGARDING S-OFF AND FLASHING WILL BE ALLOWED BUT MOST WILL BE LINKED IN A REFERENCE THREAD
•Try to keep the development forum CLEAN! No offtopic posting and no questions.
•Use the report button in an offending post to let us mods know we need to take action. Dont take matters into your own hands!!!
•Sources need to be posted for all kernels!!!
•You need to use TAGS like [ROM] or [KERNEL] and so on as used in all dev forums throughout XDA
•Any disputes between developers should be handled by pm. No public posting in a dev thread regarding these matters
•Rom issues should be discussed within their respective threads
•Thread titles should ALWAYS coincide with ROMS ALREADY AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD!!! No advance notification of incoming ROM through thread title. A changelog for the yet unreleased Rom can be included in the OP or in another post CLEARLY MARKED as EXPECTED CHANGELOG
•Posting in the development section means automatic ACCEPTANCE of the above Rules
All posts that are NOT about ROM development, or development in general will be closed or deleted and posters that will choose to disregard the previous guidelines will be infracted.
As you can see only roms and kernels should be allowed in this thead. If you have a question it needs to go into the Q&A section or if it is about a particular rom that has been posted here it needs to go in that rom thread.
ok ok sorry
Ok I'm sorry if this post hurt your feelings because I posted in the wrong forum, I'm truly sorry ill take it down soon as I get home

[Q] Where can I find 1.85 root

My phone is company owned so I've left it alone, but JB doesn't seem to be coming to me OTA so if I'm gonna have to wipe it anyways I'll wipe it and put what I want on it.
(yes our mobile security software will flag it as rooted, but I'm the only administrator for mobile so not really a concern)
the problem is the files seem to be gone.
I'm currently running 1.85.502.3 710RD
2.20 never came to me OTA,
I've searched these forums and google for 1.85 root, but everyone every points me to gigashare.in which results in a 404 error,
anyone know how I can get my phone rooted now and put on a rooted jellybean. hopefully an asop jelly bean if one is out there, lets worry about root first.
Everything you might need is in a resource list pinned to the top of the Development forum.
You should root and unlock 1.85 first before trying to upgrade, because later versions are more locked down.

LOL @ FAQ posted right at the top of this forum OP posted to.
Thank you..
I had found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709424 so many times even when looking on other websites that when I saw the FAQ linked to a thread that had the Words ACT NOW in the subject I just counted it out as being the same useless thread with the missing file.
I'll give it a try this weekend thanks.

Have fun. It won't work. As it says right in red letters at the top of the post.
Why did you not simply follow the advice in 2 of the above responses, and either look in the FAQ sticky at the top of the Q&A forum section, or my Index thread sticky on the top of the Development section? Either one would have pointed to the correct working 1.85 root method.
Obviously, the OP shouldn't root his phone, if he can follow simple instructions. Can this get locked?

I have the same question as OP.
My phone is also at&t htc one x, firmware 1.85
I have read your post :
[INDEX] AT&T/ROGERS One X Resources Compilation Roll-Up (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237)
and this one:
Frequently Asked Questions (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136172)
Both of them pointed out to the post for rooting in 1.85 firmware :
[ROOT] 1.85 - New, working method - ACT NOW, MAY NOT LAST FOREVER (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296)
I think this one is the right one to go For OP and other Noobs like me on firmware 1.85
Thanks for all the dev and seniors asking Noob's questions.:good:
If I am in the wrong way. Please point me out the right one. Thank you

[Q] about to root for the first time...

hey all, just joined the forum, been lurking for a while, trying to learn about the whole rooting process. i am still not 100% confident on the whole thing, but i am thinking about giving it a shot.
have had a few smart phones, all from t-mobile except for this last one, which is a samsung galaxy s3 from verizon, running android 4.1.2. i have watched a bunch of videos, and read a bunch of threads, but want to make sure i don't turn my phone into a brick by doing this, so i am asking here now.
if i follow the instructions in the video by officialphonerebel for the SCH-I535 will that give me root access? i tried to post a link to the video but since i am a new member the site won't allow me to do that. what else do i need to do in order to delete all the bloatware that comes pre-installed? do i need to unlock the bootloader? or will the process described in the video do that already?
thanks in advance from a dumb union plumber and pipe welder...

1.Does the video show you how to root from 4.1.2 jelly bean?
2. Yes you need to unlock the bootloader in order to flash anything.
3. Most custom ROMs have bloatware removed.
4. The only way to brick your phone is by flashing something meant for another device.
5. Kenny is a moderator so he doesn't really have to help you just moderate the forums which he did.

Kenny moves threads once they are reported so don't go subtly suggesting anything.

Thank you for the info. The video I watched said 4.1.2/4.1.1., so I am not sure if they require the same procedure or not.
So after I root the phone, I need to flash a custom ROM? I can't just run an unlocked stock version of 4.1.2?
Understood about the bricking, I will pay attention and read what I am flashing first to make sure it is for my device
This forum must run differently than other forums. I am a supermod over on a motorcycle racing website, and we need to be knowledgable about what we are moderating, and give advice and help the members, not just moderate.

I wasn't subtly suggesting anything. I think I was pretty straightfoward saying that in addition to moving my thread he could have helped me answer my questions.
Follow the instructions in below post

This will give you rooted stock rom.
Thanks doesn't hurt....

follow the directions in this thread >>>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439 and you will be rooted with an unlocked botloader and ready to flash.
from there you you can stay stock rooted and remove apps yourself. alot of people like titanium back up for that. or you can flash a touchwiz/samsung based ROM that has most if not all of the bloatware removed and allows to add what you want thru the installer at setup. you can find these ROMs in android development. or you can flash an AOSP (android open source project) ROM that is based off "pure google" with developer mods and preferences included. you can find these ROMs in original android development.
backup your phone. i use nandroid and nandroid manager but there are others that may work better for you. only flash stuff for vzw. have fun.

be careful of what?
and now i understand that this forum is different than the others i frequent. like i said, i am a supermod (voluntarily as well) on another site, and on that site, all of our mods, supermods, and admins need to be familiar with all aspects of what they are moderating, so i assumed (incorrectly apparently) that this site was run the same. my apologies for that.
my attitude? i thought it was rude of you to just moderate the thread, and not even let me know whether or not you could help or not. it was fine to tell me you moved the thread, and it was my fault for posting it in the wrong section, but all you had to say was "hey listen, i don't know much about your device, but you posted it in the wrong section, so i moved it for you." and everything would have been fine.
i read tons of "support" threads on this site, and was not aware that it was for developers only, again, my apologies. can you direct me to a site that is for support please?
for those of you that helped, i thank you.

Thread closed, I will assume you feel it necessary to vent your frustrations, but again, your above post does nothing towards the contribution and/or furthering of development.
One of the main rules of XDA is to read and follow the posting rules prior to posting. Nowhere in these rules is there a requirement for, or of, a moderator to answer your questions just because you asked one. We act on reported posts from users that violate XDA posting rules, and yours did.
If you are a moderator elsewhere, you should be familiar with the codes and standards that it takes to moderate. Firing back and getting the last word in to moderators here is not a classy or nice thing, might be on the site you volunteer on, but not here.
Now, KennyGlass123 may unlock so that you can reply to him. Or, you could have used the PM system to express your dissatisfaction of things. But you did not, hence, me locking this thread.
Have a good weekend.
