Hello guys! I'm a newbie to the android world as i'm planning to get my first smartphone. As it is retailing for 130€ the HTC Explorer seems like a good choice.
I want to learn how to root it because I need to unlock it as I need to use different sim cards. Moreover I want to exploit the phone, optimize it and maybe OC it a bit.
As far as i understood i need to do the following steps:
This tutorial to root it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1415223
This rom to install: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1473218
Are these the right steps to take?
And would be "easy" for someone that doesn't know anything to do it?
Thanks for your help guys!
c'mon guys, 5 min of your time!!

As for the guide to root the Explorer, he's basically spoon feeding instructions, so as long as you do exactly what he's doing, there shouldn't be a problem. If you have any specific questions about the process, you might want to ask in that thread.
The ROMing part is the very easy part, you choose a ROM of your choice and flash it. The link for the ROM you posted requires a certain recovery (and it appears to need some ext partition), so bear that in mind. Remember to read everything to be safe. I think most Sense ROMs require a partitioned SD card.

Thanks a lot for your reply!
I also see there are a lot of topics regarding kernel.
Should I also update the kernel after rooting it? Or does the rom update already includes a more functional kernel?

JaggyROM already includes a custom kernel.
What the kernel does is manages the CPU. Different kernels have different governers, some kernels help battery life, other kernels help with the performance of the device.
For example, the stock kernel cannot overclock, does not have governers like smartass or interactive. But flashing a custom kernel may allow OCing and give you more governers.
I, myself have never flashed a custom kernel by itself because the ROMs I flash already have good enough kernels included.

Ok cool, so i will install the jaggyROM and have nothing to worry!
One last question: does the process of rooting unlock the SIM card? From what i've read by unlocking the bootloader you also unlock the sim card.
If not are there any more steps i need to take?
Or it is simply not possible and i have to buy a IMEI code to unlock the SIM card?

Rooting does not unlock the SIM card, nor does unlocking the bootloader, sorry.
For your phone, yes you will have to unlock the traditional way

i found this tutorial in another website. is it bogus?
[INSTRUCTIONS]:
[Prerequisites:]
HTC Sync (Windows Only)
HTC Super Tool
Enable USB Debug on Pico
Use Charge Only mode when connected to PC
Exit HTC Sync on PC
[Steps:]
1. Go to HTCDEV website: HTCdev - Unlock Bootloader
2. Click on "Begin Unlock Bootloader" (create a user if you don't have one)
3. Use HTC Super Tool in the [Prerequisites] to generate your token. (Or, alternatively, follow the instructions step 1 through step 10 on htcdev.com)
4. In step 10, when posting your token, make sure you remove the blanks preceding each line
5. After you receive your Unlock_code.bin in email, follow step 11.
6. Now your pico aka explorer should reboot and you have your bootloader and sim unlocked.
(i didn't put any credits or source as i dont know the forum policy)
As far as I know, unlocking the bootloader will not SIM unlock the phone. The guide itself sounds legit, and I believe that is the way to unlock the bootloader, but the SIM should still be locked.
and I thought I should point this out, I'm pretty sure unlocking the bootloader will factory reset your phone, so you might want to make a backup of everything first

i will buy the phone tomorrow and we'll see what happens
do you know any safe website to buy an unlocking code in case that tutorial doesn't work?

No problem! Always glad to help. (And remember to click the thanks button for whichever posts you found helpful hehe )
I've never had to unlock my phone, but what I think the best place to unlock is at a local cell shop. However, they do charge a lot, for profit and such. Otherwise, the next best option is to use eBay and make sure its a trusted seller with good feedback. Personally, all those SIM unlocking sites look fishy to me

I can confirm this does sim unlock the Explorer! Yays. Shame it has to void warranty ... o_0 now to see if I can relock bootloader and keep sim unlock...
Funny enough, i read about it and didnt think it would work. But i just unlocked one of those phones which was carrier branded and didnt want to accept the code the box gave me. As last resort i tried this method and i can confirm it works. Incredible!!!! When i thought this was a very hard phone to sim unlock i found this thread and unlocked the bootloader and that was it, i got a sim unlocked HTC Explorer. Good Job you guys!
I cannot for the life of my get root access to this phone, its a refurb shipped to me as a warranty replacement, so its basically new, with all the OTA updates already applied, I have tried all the links to root, like the One Clicks etc, even tried the One_X_ATT_All-In-One_Kit_v1.1, when I try to do it manually, I used ADB Shell, and it connects ok, I can see files etc on the system partition, but when I type SU, it says file not found, when I copied SU files to the SD card and tried to run it from there, it says permission denied. This phone seems to be locked right down!
Android Version : 4.0.3 Full build number is 1.94.631.3 CL76063 release-keys
I have tried everything I could think of, and have searched the forums, I just cannot find a solution... Any help would be appreciated...

unlock your bootloader through HTC-Dev (all other models)
flash twrp
flash superuser from recovery downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip
None of the AT&T root solutions apply to you, or any other carrier version of the One X/XL except AT&T. For the AT&T version, we need to have root in order to spoof the CID and get bootloader unlock via HTCDev.com. This is because AT&T is blocking HTC for allowing the bootloader to be unlocked (and the only carrier to do so).
You can skip all that and just unlock the bootloader via HTCDev.com (as mentioned in the reply above). Then install custom recovery (TWRP) and flash SU to achieve root. Or alternately, flash a rooted ROM.

So what you are saying is that I do not have to change my CID or root before unlocking boot loader?
I got my identifier token and am going to submit it... I just saw another response, looks like I have it easy and was looking way too hard... the first time I rooted my phone I DID have to spoof my CID etc, thus the confusion...
Thanks guys!

At last! Web site awake and I can unlock bootloader.
Bumping. Would unlocking bootloader and flashing superuser from recovery work on the new OTA JB update?
Guys Hello I got myself treated to an Inspire 4G about 20 hours ago..
I ordered it online from ebay where the seller sent me the AT&T device UNLOCKED
So my question is if I have an OTA upgrade or instally the latest upgrade(or probably flash some custom roms) Am i in the risk of losing my unlock??
Any other stupidity that may cause me to lose my Unlock??
Sorry for being a noob.. this is my first ever carrier unlocked device. Also this is my first **** from IOS//
Thanks in advance..

Just to clarify. You phone is already rooted and you can flash custom ROMS? Or your phone is just unlocked and you are confusing the terms ROOTED and UNLOCKED?
I meant sim unlocked.. Not boot loader unlocked
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
As far as I know you cant relock ur simlock it is not easy enough for a beginner
Like you,I had bought 2 years ago an (sim) unlock inspire 4g from amazon ...
You should use either easy ace root tool or HTC dev unlock website to unlock your bootloader ...
I recommend you to use easy ace root tool ,this tool will automate these processes: unlocking bootloader, flashing CWM ,installing SuperUser.apk
On the other hand S-OFF is a little bit risky you may brick your phone ,Be careful
Unlocking bootloader is enough to flash custom roms but not for flashing radios
I have spent hours on here reading and looking.. Everything seems to be outdated or questionable. I'm sorry if this is something I should of been able to find. I've looked.. Just send me to a link if you need to.
Questions:
If I root the phone will it be carrier unlocked?
If not.. What do I need to do to get it carrier unlocked?
What I've already done.
Unlocked the boot loader with HTCDEV.
HTC seems to be more so complicated than most. Sorry.
Neither rooting nor unlocking the bootloader will unlock the SIM card. That needs to be done separately. I've never used it, but I think AAHK2 does unlock the SIM.

My buddy kirn had a inspire 4g he stated he found an unlock method that although was rather intensive worked 100% it involved flashing a htc desire hd stock unbranded ruu WARNING I dot have details and flashing a ruu not intended for your device CAN BRICK IT

I am thinking of getting an S6 and i wanted a rootable phone. i see a root method available but no bootloader unlock and yet i see ROMs available. how does this work. i thought bootloader needed to be unlocked in order to do custom ROMs. Or is htere a verizon bootloader unlock available i could not find?

There is not and 99% chance there will never be a bootloader unlock. Root method no longer works in later versions of android. The bootloader does not need to be unlocked with a custom recovery.
I apologize for not diligently searching as I should, I came across this asking the same more or less as I was.... I have one sitting on lrx22g.g920vvru1a0c3 which if I read the root method correctly I can root... At that point you say that the boot loader doesn't need to be unlocked so I can ( mfastboot flash recover xxxx.IMG ) on a locked boot loader? Or use rashr ? And after which we can ROM it?... Could I then theme it as well? I am coming for Motorola's all I've ever had/used/touched ever.... Running stock do I need to deodex it to be able to theme it? Do we have firmware out there n a tool (like Moto's rsd lite/ house of moto) to flash it with? With unlimited data is there a mobile hotspot mod/hack use utilize the baked I hotspot app? Can I still pull system apps theme um zip um and flash up.... Not having the Sim card yet I can really play with it as I wish to ... I just powered it on and its asking for an update... So I figured it'd try to root it now as there's no unlock for it..... Thank you kindly for your time and information
OE2 is the latest firmware that is rootable. Once rooted, you can flash a custom recovery and load roms through that.
There is a rooted S6 available for sale on swappa right now, just so you know
