HTC Sensation (UK, vodafone) - first time htc flasher - pointers needed - HTC Sensation

Hi,
I'm new to the sensation - in fact it isn't my device byt my wifes. I'm more a Galaxy S II/III person and have done many flashes of different firmware on the former. Flashing on that device is really easy... no locked bootloader (which I've therefore never had to deal with) etc
The sensation is currently running Vodafone UK 3.32 build, but we're getting far too frequent crashes, so I'm considering reflashing with the latest generic UK, European, or global firmware to see if this alleviates the issue
I posted the images of the firmware screens on a g+ thread here if any more detail is needed.
A quick peek around this thread didn't immediately point me to a quick-start guide on flashing. Could anyone oblige with a useful link or two?
I'd be flashing from Windows 7 x64. Required language is UK English. I really want stock or very close to stock (she won't want anything to *look* different - in fact I'm still getting slated for allowing the ICS update as before that it was fine ..). Ideally on an official ROM that would allow future OTA updates (preferably generic, more recent). Rooting is not required. Preservation of date would be useful (as this would be a 3.32->3.33 stock upgrade) though isn't essential
Many thanks

without root preserving apps data is not possible ..you can still backup your message and call logs ..using lots of apps (super backup pro, sms backup and restore)
now as you want pure stock or stock like rom with future updates ..the RUU is the option
for RUU info and guide to flash it look here
now you can try the same Vodafone UK ICS RUU ..which i haven't found in any of the repositories
and as you want to try flashing other generic RUU's ..there is a condition to be met ..that is supercid* ..and to do supercid you need SOFF*
CID: carrier Identification ..A 8 character word which is used to identify which carrier and country the phone belongs to .as sensation is global device it has lots of cid's (eg genric unbranded european : HTC__001, Vodafone: VODAP001 etc etc ..more info present in the RUU guide) ..supercid (11111111) is a special cid ..which can be accepted on behalf of any CID
SOFF: security off ..by default the sensation internal memory is locked aka signed (SON) ..and unless we remove sign check ..we cant change much of stuff (we cant even do ROOT as it requires modification in system partition which is a signed internal memory partition). but HTC has provided an alternative UNLOCKED bootloader method ..which removes sign check verifications on certain partitions ..thus allowing custom rom support (remember even UNLOCKED bootloader by HTC is not sufficient to change the CID to supercid as this process involves modification in bootloader itself which is still signed(locked) )
now to SOFF there are two methods ..and its explained in this post

Hi and welcome to the HTC flashing family
Please find the Android Revolution HD link in my signature for most of the info you requested.
It is a close to stock rom as requested, with a very large community and great support.
The ARHD thread's first few posts contains both lots of useful info and some great links for other posts dedicated to newcomers.
I cant link you directly with the info you requested as I'm not on my computer atm. Please reply with more questions if the info above is not sufficient and I'll get back to you in a day with more specific links.
Good luck

You can try THIS thread for information on rooting/s-off and other things. Once you've read through those and successfully rooted our phone you can try THIS thread for a stock experience, but with a lot of the inherent HTC bugs fixed, and more optimizations. I will point out that ARHD ROM is a fixed stock ROM essentially. Thus relies on HTC to put out new official updates. But the sensation is an old phone now, and probably won't receive many more updates if any at all. Thus this ROM will unlikely see any major updates.
EDIT: Woops! Beaten to it! TWICE!

Thanks guys, that info is really useful. Will look through tomorrow

[Q] How to deBRAND HTC Mozart from T-Mobile?

I have HTC Mozart with latest MANGO update from ZUNE!!
It is from Germany, T-MOBILE with all their apps and addons I don't need here in Bosnia!!! BTW, it SIM Unlocked!!!
How, if possible, to make it run with ORIGINAL HTC WP7.5 Mango!!!???
I searched for T-Mobile MANGO ROM but it nowhere to be found,
all I have available on NET is older ROMS from T-Mobile but I am afraid to BRICK my device if I try DOWNGRADING it from Mango to older BOOTS such as 1.28 or 1.30!
Any solution to this, I would appreciate your help!!!
The capital letters and explamation marks don't actually make it easier to help you, BTW.
If you're trying to de-brand the phone, why would you want a T-Mobile-branded ROM? You just want a stock HTC ROM. It has to be for the correct phone, but tht's about it.
If your bootloader (SPL) is already on version 5, you may have a problem replacing the ROM. If you're on 4.5 or lower, you should be able to flash any official ROM without damaging the device.
ok, thanks
Hey all,
First of all I want to say I am glad that I found this forum and community. I think you really can help me out with my (futher) questions.
Since my Telekom branded HTC Mozart won't get the tethering update I am on the search to debrand my HTC Mozart.
I already read that it is essential to have the right SPL Version, now when I enter the bootloader mode I get following data:
PD67100
SPL-4.5.XXXX.X
Now I have a few Questions:
1. Do I need to check other data before starting to debrand the Phone?2. Will I get further Updates via ZUNE after I debranded my Phone?3. What are the main reasons to
a. leave it branded?
b. debrand the Phone?4. Are there some issues with apps form the Marketplace after the debrand?
And last but not least:
5. Where can I find a working debranded ROM?
I would really be thankful for any kind of hints and help
Best regards
WPeter7
@WPeter7:
1) Well, you need to make sure that you're getting an unbranded (open market) ROM, and you need to make sure that your ROM matches your hardware. You also need to back up pictures/movies/music/whatever if you have any on the phone that aren't already on the PC.
2) Yes, official ROMs will continue to receive updates.
3) Leaving it branded lets you access carrier-specific features, like TMO's MyAccount app. It also is simply les hassle, and you don't have to lose all your data (which will hppen if you flash a ROM). Unbranding the phone means you remove all carrier customizations, and may receive updates earlier (because the carrier doesn't need to test and customize them).
4) No, not if it's an official ROM and the region is correct (i.e. if you can access apps now and you use the same primary WLID, you'll be able to access them again). However, you'll probably lose access to carrier-specific apps, as mentioned above.
5) Go look in the forum or wiki section specific to your phone. There should be a list of official ROMs. Alternatively, check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254384

[Q] Going Back To Stock ROM?

Hi!!
I just got a Desire S, i' am new to rooting... so i need to know whether i can go back to the stock ROM (2.3.3 with sense 2.1) after i root the device.
This is the only dilemma holding me back from rooting my desire s.
Thank you for your Time! : )
To root your phone you have to S-OFF (turning off security that prevents you to flash system components) first.
You can do this with Revolutionary
This procedure will change your bootloader to a modified one.
To keep the possibility to go back S-ON and Stock you should flash this hboot and when the time comes to restore the system with a RUU with your current version (that can be checked in Settings - About phone - Software information)
A lot of useful info here, all the necessary files and guides here
Thanks a lot for the info!!
But one problem though, my Baseband Version is: 20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M and Software number is: 1.47.111.3 .
I searched thoroughly in the link (RUU) u posted above, but i didn't find the matching RUU.

Let me guess - when you power on your device you have the T-Mobile logo
Your current software version is higher then the T-Mobile RUU provided here (RUU_Saga_TMO_DE_1.30.111.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_3 8.03.02.11_M_release), so to restore Stock you will have to downgrade and then update via the Software actualization option in your settings (if such OTA is available) to return it to the current state. This is more tricky process, that can be done flawlessly if your device is healthy. But if you get in trouble and some system components are not responding (brick, bootloop) there is a great change that you will be not able to S-ON again. Happened to a lot of branded devices, reported here.
So my advice is to keep using it that way - it is still a great phone even with Stock software. You can S-OFF and root it of course at your own risk.
It is up to you
Dude you are right man... the T-mobile sign does come up, thanks for the heads up, appreciate it... don't want to brick ma phone... i' ll keep using it this way.
Another small question- do u know why the t- mobile logo is showing up during boot? i just got the phone brand new, and T-mobile isn't operating in my country. The box and the manuals in German, does it mean it's a refurbished phone?
And the phone also doesn't get software update, such as sense 3.0.

The logo means that your phone is branded for T-Mobile. So better ask the operator/shop that you got it for more details. For me is quite strange since this mobile carrier is not operating in your country branded phones to be sold there
As for the Sense 3.0 update it depends on the operators. Probably T-Mobile will release one but when - do not know.
Anyway if there is a chance to replace your device for an unbranded one this will be the best thing to do.

Is it likely that i' ll be getting a OTA update from T-mobile, since the phone's from Germany and i live in an Asian Country?

Yes you should receive the update, because the update check from your phone settings is made on a central server (both on WiFi and Mobile data, the phone connects to the same place in the Internet)

hey im kinda a noob so what u said means i can or not, i have a desire s and i cant wait for the sense 3.0 update so if i download a custom rom for now, and when the official update comes in my region can i go back to the stock android then update it normally??????

About S-ON, S-OFF, radios, hboot, root...

I've been reading a lot about all of that stuff.
What I have learned is that with unlocking the bootloader you can flash any rom and any recovery.
But I see that people is flashing hboots and radios.
What is the purpose of that? I ask for learning.
What differences are between hboot versions? And radios?
Thanks all.
I am not an expert (far not), but I just unlocked my phone and ROMMED and i can tell its a must. You can do the process as discussed in the topics and by simply following the HTC official guidlines and then you will have step by step "learning" and you will have a sense of all as your Hboot and system files update one by one.
my experience as follows:
-many updates install on the phone over the usb debugging interface. moreover if you choose user friendlier official updates: through MSwindows Android SDK: of which there is are built packages by the developer to a simple exe file which is called RUU - the HTC official roms can be found like this.
Hboot is loaded when the phone can already communicate through USB and you can imagine that as they came out with the updates, one must avoid flaws and they debugged/improved Hboot backend on the phone too.
Actually for unlocking the device (which is made by a token sent by HTC after identitified your phone and SD card*) - HBOOT 1.10 is a must, so that is usually the first step of the upgrade, when on HTC site you see a list of RUU's to start the process with.
Radio is more complicted issue but included in the Roms and must align with the bands (CDMA, GSM...) under the carriers thats all. I would not worry about it much as long as you verify ROM that you chose goes along with your device.
You cannot do too bad if you chose from Alex's official mods (http://alex.swtesting.ro/downloads/) and e.g. I am using ASIA 1.57 just for having 1.57 later version then 1.54 and it works in europe, and honestly I dont care what radio vers I have.
Generally from updated radios I would expect better quality sound at the price of better battery life, better reception, at least this must be the reason they are developing them, right..?
Obviously you dont want to read too much, so I would start with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255107 (Everything for ChaCha (Status) - S-OFF, root & More) this is the best forum while you get to the official unlock process and if you get stuck you see in other topics or they will help you in this general one. S-OFF/S-ON is not an issue anymore, since there is official unlock... dont worry.

I appreciate the compliment but unfortunately these are not my official mods, these are the official ROMs
I mirrored them in a safe location on my hosting so that they will never be removed. I gave a thought or two about modding these, but since each person has his/hers own opinions, I thought that stock would suffice (for example, I like the stock ROM, but with the CyanogenMod lockscreen and the SuperOSR mods).
But mainly yeah, the radios are based on the GSM chip your device is using, the operator and the area you are in (as USA and EU/Asia use different bandwidths for GSM operators).
As for the HBOOT, hopefully I'll get a schematics up tomorrow (aka a badly drawn piece of paper) to explain what it does - usually it's easier to explain through pics than words.
As promised, ladies and gents, the android phone:
Legend (as I forgot to name them):
1. first block -> processor (cpu)
2. second block -> main board
Main board legend:
1. cpu
2. above the cpu - ethernet chip/board/card
3. right side top of cpu - RAM memory
4. right side bottom of cpu - NAND memory
3. third block -> NAND memory
NAND memory breakdown:
The first 2KB (2048) of memory is the bootloader (HBOOT) in our case, which can extend to the first large NAND partition.
Second NAND large partition is occupied by the kernel (marked with K).
Third NAND large partition is occupied by the root system.
The bootloader is the first thing that initializes when you power up your phone, which reads out the current hardware configurations and sets some registries. Afterwards, the bootloader launches the kernel, which loads into the RAM memory block. And the rest is history.

[Q] Rebrand Desire S with ICS wwe from HTCDEV

Dear all,
I am in the middle of the bridge and don't know where to go...could you please give some help deciding what to do?
I have a Branded Desire S (Vodafone) with v2.3.5 lastest OTA update, and I would like to flash and try the ICS stock WWE from HTCDEV.
The simlock has already been removed, but the thing is can i flash this ICS update? do i need any goldcard or anything of the kind? Will the phone work ok? Or do i have to wait (maybe forever...) for the vodafone update? I reallly would like to unbrand the phone (the vodafone logo and other vodefone apps are really annoying...).
I think if this WWE update will go ok, when i received and warning about any vodafone update (because the serial indicates that this phone is a vodafone one) i have to ignore it and only apply only any WWE updates from HTCDEV, rather than that, i thing phone will work ok... but still i am worried about some things like :
- bricking phone with ICS update;
- some things don't work ok with this update because is a branded phone (i chat with HTC support and they told me that some guy complained about WIFI does not work after the ICS update, ... could it be possible, even if the hardware is the same from branded and unbranded phones?;
- possibility to go back to a 2.3.5 rom if i dont like for whatever reason of the ICS of its behavior on this phone; the HTC guy told me that only on the HTC assistance was possible to make it ... dont we just have to run the correct version of the ROM (by the way i don't know which is mine, could you please tell me? Because i seached on the HTCDEV for the right software number (2.10.168.3) and the file to download is a ".gz" file not a .exe one;
Other thing, does this ICS include a PTG (Portugal) language.
I will be forever grateful for all the help / hints you can give me.:good:
Thx in advance.
D_Saint
From what I've heard, the ics update has bugs, that can only be solved with root access. Flashing the ruu should work fine though, but you won't be able to downgrade without unlocking the bootloader to get root access.
For these reasons I would recommend making your phone s-off (see guides in the "general section), and installing a fixed version of the ics update, or whatever custom rom you want. Then you can still go back to the original state, if you want to.
I read somewhere on my downgrade guide that they have successfully debranded their phone using my guide.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda app-developers app
Ditto to above two comments, read, read and then soff rather than htcdev
Sywepd form my DsereiS
Thx for tips, Will soff erase contacts or apps? For root with soff how to flash su??? Is there any repaired / bugless ics stock?

[Q] RUU to go back stock

I know there are several threads like this one but I prefer not to write another RUU request while you're answering to another user
So, I got a HTC One S S3 yesterday... I began to unlock it because I wanted to change its CID. I found that in the S3 version the CID can't be changed (still) when I had already installed the TWRP Recovery.
Now I'd like to go back to stock, but there is not a RUU compatible with my device: It has VODAP102 as CID, but the RUU for Vodafone AT here doesn't work. I found the kernel source for the same software version I have in htcdev.com, my question is: is it possible to build a RUU or at least a boot.img from it?
The sources can be found in htcdev /devcenter/downloads (sorry but being new I can't post direct links!), HTC One S as Device, Vodafone as Carrier and UK -
1.11.161.133 as software version. Actually I am in Italy, but the software and kernel version are exactly the same.
Thank you in advance.
Bump to first page and a little addendum:
I've read again all the possibilities I have with this phone, and if I have understood accurately then I'm forced to go back to stock, roms like the ThickDroid seem to require a non-branded CID, but that's the point... it is the CID that's compelling me to maintain this original Vodafone software, otherwise I would have already installed the HTC "basic" rom.
Am I missing something?
Thank you again!
Have you tried looking on HTCRUU.COM?
Check your radio id on the bootloader screen then flash the appropriate ROM

Yes I checked, but they have just unbranded RUUs, here in the forum there's one RUU for Vodafone but the region isn't the same as mine.
I've read that it is possible to flash an OTA update deleting the string that checks the CID - I'll have to take a look about that (moreover, it seems very difficult to find .zip OTA updates for this phone...).
Nevertheless I'd like to find this RUU update too - it is an important option too. So... bump to first page.
