I'm rooted, but can't change camera sound extensions...WHY? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I rooted my phone a few days ago and everything is working fine. I've decided to disable my camera shutter sound by renaming the .ogg files to .old, but when I select "rename" it tells me "insufficient permissions"???
I downloaded root checker and verified that I still have root and I do. I'm trying to use Astro file manager to do this, what am I missing or how can I fix this?
I just downloaded "Linda file manager" to see if maybe Astro was the problem, but Linda won't let me change it either. it just says ERROR

Do I need another app to do this? I've looked in Astro and can't find anything about mounting???

After some research I see that there are commands via ADB that allow me to mount, but can renaming file be done without adb? If I have to use adb and mount this way, does it stay mounted so I can modify anything/anytime I want?
I thought rooting gave me full access, why didn't this happen?

I don't think astro gives you rw access to anything above the /sdcard directory.

Rooting does give you access but you need a capable app that takes su. When it's rooted it doesn't automatically give you su but enables apps to obtain it.

use root explorer, go to the directory and mount r/w. u shud have the correct permissions then if it doesnt work go to clockworkmod and fix permissions and retry.

Thanks root explorer did the trick!

Disabling/altering startup and shutdown sounds.

I read the tip in another thread about how to disable and/or change the Captivate's startup and shutdown sounds but cannot find the files mentioned on my phone. Does anyone have more detailed instructions on how to get rid of the annoying startup and shutdown sounds without using the SDK?
You must have root, then use a file manager (I use root explorer) and rename or delete the sound file:
/system/etc/PowerOn.wav
/system/media/audio/ui/shutdown.ogg

I keep getting an error saying I don't have the permissions to rename those files... I'm using several different file explorer apps and they all give me the same message

Still unable to find the files. I am using the default file manager with View Hidden Files enabled and there is no /system directory.

You need to download a manager that has ROOT capabilities or you will not find them.

Easy with ConnectBot to turn off that annoying startup sound.
Connect to local system
su
(Confirm superuser request)
mv /system/etc/PowerOn.wav /system/etc/PowerOn.bak
exit
exit
Done!
Thanks for this LGSilva
I finally ponied up and bought Root Explorer. I found the files and renamed them and everything seems to be working.
Would love to find this info myself.

[Q] alternative to root explorer?

it will not authorize my purchase in the market becuase of it being in UK currency. is there an alternative file manager like root explorer, so i can move a bootanimation file in the /system/media folder?

Not exactly related...but adb still works the best...for me
Super manager in the market, wen you DL, you have to go to super manag. Options and check root otherwise its just a file explorer

EStrong's File Explorer has a root option too, but the last time I tried using ES, it would only ever work once. If I rebooted or exited the app, I'd have to FC it and Wipe Data or else it'd hang up trying to open back up.

[Q] How do I move this app to system folder?

I want to use Location Spoofer to spoof my GPS location. In it's description it says:
"Spoof your device location, make it appear to be in another place.
A simple utility to set a fake wireless networks location.
You have to allow mock locations under Settings -> Applications -> Development
(rooted phones can spoof location with mock locations disabled, move the app to /system/app to get that)"
I want to be able to spoof my location WITHOUT checking the "allow mock locations" option checked.
My Droid X is rooted with Z4. I can't see the apps in the data folder. I thought I would be able to once I was rooted? What a I missing?
I used Atsro to view folders and files, but the data folder was empty.
you have to use root explorer or super manager and move the .apk to /system/app

Great! Now where is the APK installed by default? I thought I knew but I guess not.
Let me do some exploring real quick
edit: they save to /data/app

Ok, now I don't see a /data folder. I see it when I use Astro File Manager, but it is empty. Using Super Manager, I don't even see the folder at all...any idea why?
I believe you have to enable root in super manager. Let me check (I use root explorer)
Edit: enter "File Explorer" and then hit your menu button and select "Setup" then "Enable ROOT Function" then hit "Back up level folder" a couple times and you should see the /data folder

Easy
Root your device
Install Root Explorer.apk (google search)
Open Root Explorer. Then copy your app .apk file to root/system/app (check if you choose RO instead of RW).
Reboot and enjoy!

I figured it out, thanks for the help This post was really helpful :victory:
What if I use root explore but it just restarts the phone instead of actually transferring to system?
The phone is rooted and it's an HTC One m8 I've tried multiple apps to move it to the system but none of them work.
When I tried to transfer the apk to the /system/app, Error is displayed - "The item base.apk could not be written". This is after giving the permission to modify the /system/app folder. Any help is appreciated!
I rooted my phone and have the fake gps thing, but when I go to system mover app and try to make it a system app, it says done, reboots, and it has Uninstalled my app, wth

Open file explorer. Go to system/app folder. Search for moved app and install again. If it not moved then other app mover apps.
Its actually system/priv-app.. Either way, better use link2sd or any other such app to move the fake GPS pro to system app. Then reboot.

I downloaded the ZIP with a whole folder structure in it. This time I just created a C:\ADB folder and moved the ADB and firewater files into it and it worked.

Granting it for the adb shell should do the trick. Thats the only thing that asked for root when I was going through the process.

Did you do the following from the link I provided?
"C) READ CAREFULLY: If it doesn't already exist, you're going to need to create a 'local/temp' folder in the 'data' folder of the ABSOLUTE ROOT FOLDER of the device. You will NOT find the correct 'data' folder if you do not enable 'root explorer' and 'hidden files.' There are numerous 'data' folders in your phone, but you need the one in the absolute root. In ES File Explorer, you can click on the top, and it will progressively advance 'up' one folder each time you click it. Keep clicking until you see 'Device.' Once you are there, you will see 3 options under 'History." There should be:
"/Device"
"0 (x.xx GB/x.xx GB)"
"extSdCard (xx.xx GB/xx.xx GB)
4) Open the "/Device" folder, and find (or create) the folder named 'Local.' Open that folder, and find (or create) the folder named 'tmp.' Upload the 'firewater' file from Folder 4 of my Dropbox link.
For the previous step, I want to emphasize that for some reason, I absolutely could not push the 'firewater' file to my phone via adb as directed in the tutorials I found out there. I don't know if it had anything to do with the OTA that I downloaded, but everytime I would try pushing the file, the phone would disconnect from my PC, and upon reconnecting, it was gone. Also, the way I uploaded 'firewater' into that folder was by 'exporting' the file from my Dropbox to that folder. I expect there are other options, but that is what worked for me."

(LG V20, T-Mobile) Change Emoji from stock when rooted

Thought i'd put this on it's own thread so it doesn't get lost in the sea of comments where i put it originally. Mods, if this belongs somewhere else please move.
For anyone wanting to change their emoji and not sure if you want to use that switcher app, its very simple. Install ES file explorer (i can't imagine most of you don't already have it) and go to system/fonts and locate "NoToColorEmojii.ttf" and rename it to your liking (i just renamed it with NoToColorEmojii_OLD.ttf). Then download a replacement TTF emoji file, i used this one :
http://www.mediafire.com/file/oe85f3h5mj0731k/NotoColorEmoji.ttf
NEW WORKING LINK POSTED
download it and put it in the same folder the old one is in, reboot your phone, and viola, you're good to go.
Hope this helps!

Im rooted and still cant edit system files. I re-ran the recowvery script, and when i got to TWRP, I swiped to allow changes to the system partition. Then flashed no-verity-opt-encrypt.zip then flashed SuperSu.
I am certain about root priviliges. SuperSU prompts me when root is required, and I am using a custom rom.
I used a script in the app RomManager to mount system RW to no avail.
I am using ES File Manager. I dont understand this, so any help is appreciated. Thanks

I'm not a noob by any stretch but I'm feeling like one again with this LG stuff so just to clarify this is basically just a guess, but if you're positive you have root access then it sounds like the problem could be with the file explorer you're using. I don't use es file explorer myself so if it is the problem I couldn't tell you why, but I use solid explorer and I haven't had any issues with modifying system files. Anyway just thought I'd throw it out there in case you haven't already tried with a different file explorer. Hope it helps

That's good advice. My first thought exactly. I think the real problem was i had assumed the rom came with Busybox already installed. I installed Busybox when scripts for read/write access wouldnt run in apps that required it. Now things work perfectly.

It's funny because I had a similar problem when I first installed Adaway because it would download the updated host but it kept failing to install, and then it finally dawned on me when I was doing something else that required busybox that it wasn't already installed because for some reason I also had just assumed it was. Anyway I'm glad to hear you got it figured out ?
