Like the GS3, I don't believe there is any option built in to disable it. Kind of a dumb thing to leave out... You can though mute the volume (hold the left vol. button till it goes to vibrate), THAT will silence it.

yea i did that. i set vibrate for everything but camera sound still persist.
damn hopefully roms can change this...

huh. I tried it myself before posting and it worked, so I have no idea what to tell ya xD
Did you get the OTA update before it was taken down?

LOL nvm, im retarded...=_____=
nope i didnt get the OTA. i got the update popup but after i click on it, it said there isnt any update lol
Thanks,

Not even sure if that has anything to do with it, but maybe. but yeah, all I did was press the vol button to the left until it was on vibrate, opened up the camera app and it was completely silent taking pictures.
I suppose another alternative would be to use a different camera app if you can't get it to disable via the volume.

i think someone replied about the galaxy phones that they had to keep the camera sound b/c of some laws in asian countries where they have problems of people taking candid shots.
i believe if you're rooted you could find the sound file and remove it, i'm sorry i don't know what it is. you may be able to find more info on the other samsung devices on how to disable it. there are alternate camera apps or you can just wait for a modded apk later.

Just a heads up, if you turn the volume down using the on screen controls, it will NOT mute the camera. If you use the volume button on the top of the tablet, it WILL mute the camera. Tried this last night.

Hard button end call

Per Cicada : "Just an fyi, this option is in the accessibility settings menu in froyo. "
-Thanks for the tip!
in "/system/usr/keylayout/s3c-keypad.kl"
change POWER to ENDCALL for a hard button end call.
I used notepad++ to make the edits.
Screen off/power off works like normal after you end your call!
Ok, the original is listed as:
Code:
key 58 POWER WAKE_DROPPED
What should it end up being? key 58 ENDCALL WAKE_DROPPED? Or.....??
edit: Ok, changed to above... at first it didnt seem like it did anything, but then I realized that I had to reboot it for it to take effect Now I just hope I dont accidentally hit that button in the middle of a call.
Yes

Did you do this because the end call button stops working randomly after the proximity sensor is disengaged? I noticed this on my first Epic AND my replacement. Had to put the phone back to my head and pull it away to get the touch screen back to functional.
hrm
Actually no lol never had that issue.. I had a samsung moment before my epic and really missed the hard answer/end buttons, I travel and talk on the phone in the car alot, and didnt like to look at my phone to end the call.. I will figure out something for a hard button answering as well
I don't mean to be a smarta$$ but you didn't need to put the phone back to your head. You can just cover the proximity sensor with your finger. I know this doesn't pertain to the op but just fyi.

I have never had this problem on either of the two epics that I/wife own. So I don't think it's an issue for all epics. On the other hand though, this is very neat, and I wouldn't mind having a hard end call button. Thanks alot OP!

Is this only in DK05 or 17? because I dont see it on my phone running DJ29... All it says is "No accessibility applications found. You do not have any accessibility applications. You can download a screen reader from Android Market. Click OK to install screen reader."
I did this fix in 2.1 and carried it over to 2.2, didnt see the change in accessibility
Click Cancel on the 'No accessibility applications found' prompt, this will drop you to the accessibility menu where the option is, a checkbox labeled "The power key ends calls"
I had that end call problem as well with my first epic and have the same problem with my replacement. How can I do this 'workaround' on my eclair? i dont have froyo.. running bakedsnack rom+kernel.. thanks in advance..

Just follow the instructions in the original post. Worked great on mine running syndicate 1.0.2/xtreme
This works great! I knew about the accessibility feature in the newer Froyo ROM, but never knew it could be applied to Eclair. EXCELLENT!
Also, the tip for Vol-up + Power + Camera was also an excellent tip for insta-reboot! Thanks boss!

Ugh I hateeeee that. And sometimes, the proximity sensor would act up while I'm on the phone and my cheek would end the call.

can I change the lockscreen?

Good afternoon XDA.
I'm wondering if anyone has any guidance on how I can change the lockscreen on the G2x?
I am rooted with clockwork installed. I know if I install cm7 I'll have more options but currently that rom doesn't allow me to have data, calls only.
I have searched high and low for settings for the lockscreen and can't find any.
here's my problem. I was spoiled by cm6 and 7 on mytouch slide. With the G2x the buttons aren't real buttons so they don't actually pull the phone out of sleep. The only button that does that is the power button at the top. And then the only way to get past the lock screen is to gesture from left to right. I absolutely hate that whole gesture to unlock thing. I know it was nifty for nifties sake when it was first done a couple years ago and has become standard since then. But I hate it. it's uncomfortable and annoying. I just want to pull my phone out, push a button and start doing what I need to do. Sometimes it's just check a widget on my desktop. Now I have to fumble around swiping to do that.
On the mytouch with CM i could just double click the trackpad our menu button and it would unsleep then unlock easy as that.
Please if anyone knows a way to get past the lock screen with a button press or get rid of the lockscreen entirely so it unlocks as soon as it unsleeps please let me know.
dream scenario: push volume button and phone comes out of sleep, push volume button again to get past lockscreen.
widget locker can disable the lockscreen i believe
other than that i dont know of any apps that would let you hit the volume button to wake up the phone
CM7 would definitely be the easiest way to get it done, but unfortunately it looks like it wouldnt work out for you.
CM7 might get the option to wake with the volume keys...
http://review.cyanogenmod.com/#change,3255
The code is there, it just hasn't been merged yet...
I found this application and tried it out. It takes a second to unlock, but one press of the power button gets you in.

That is such great news. I'm definitely going to CM7 when data works on it because I can't imagine using my phones for a long time without cyanogen on them.
And thank you to the people who gave app suggestions, i'm going to check those out.

Phone App Fail

Anyone else share my enthusiasm for this feature, the 'phone goes to sleep while I'm on a call and I can't do anything unless I hit the power button and hang up' trick! This is my favorite. Works great in conference calls with your boss and clients who are bidding on multi-million dollar contracts! Need to check an email while on the conference call? Can't. Want to answer another call? Can't. Want to turn the speakerphone off because your 4 year old comes running into your home office? Can't. I'm not sure if it's a Sense Fail or Google Fail but it's a major f'ing fail in my book. Hopefully it's just me being an idiot and missing a setting, but the phone comes out of the box doing this. Still a fail.
Pretty sure its a YOU fail. Works fine here dude. I check emails, text, look up map directions while on the phone. What 'battery saver' apps do you have running?
Sent from my HTC One XL using Tapatalk 2
You probably configured to use power button to end the call (that option should never existed, IMO). So, that means you can't access other phone features without hand up the call.
IIRC, out of box, power button is not configured to hand up the call for this exact reason. You probably enabled it.
When Android goes into sleep (or turn off the screen), only power button can wake it up. So configure power button to end the call is nothing but ask for trouble.

None. I can do all of those things as well, while the phone is on, but talking for more than 2 minutes (which is what I have set under Display and Gestures/Sleep) and the screen goes to sleep. Nothing brings it out except the power button. I've only had it for 4 days, I'm trying to keep it 'native' until I figure everything out.

You put me onto the correct path, there is an option under Accessibility for 'Power Button ends call'. By default it is on. As for the wake from sleep, I can't find that one.

There isn't one. Only power button can wake the screen.
Also, you can flip the phone over while on the call to automatically turn on speaker phone. Flip back, it will automatically turn off speaker phone. Quite handy if you do meetings a lot. It is configurable in call settings. This is HTC only feature that can't be found on other brands.

Power Button on HTC OneX

Does anyone know of an existing mod or another way to wake my phone? I would prefer to wake the phone with the volume toggles instead of the power button at the top. ::Small hands::
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
wake up "call"
I had wondered about the same thing when i got my one x last week. I find it really inconvenient to wake up the phone using the top button. It seems like you have to put a lot of pressure on it just to actuate it, plus it sits at a weird angle that makes it quite awkward to press. The other concern is the weird placement of the hdmi charger port on the side of the phone instead of the bottom.
Lastly, I find the volume rocker on the right side of the phone placed too close to the center instead of closer to the top (making it easy to press accidentally) and they are much too sensitive. I've lost count of the number of times I've inadvertently increased the volume to the detriment of my ear drums. I did, however, get a Speck case that alleviates that problem, BUT, exacerbates the issue with the power button that is the subject of this thread. its just too hard to actuate the top button with the case on, never mind trying to to take a screenshot using it and the capacitive home button. REALLY awkward...
I've just crossed over from IOS to android so for now I only know iphone. There was an app available from Cydia (app store for jailbroken iphones) that allowed me to assign the iphone buttons to just about anything. I had hoped there was something like this app in Play store but I'm still new to android so I'm having to rely on the members who have been at this for a while.
Well I just found an app in the play store called JustFlip only played with it a little but seems to work on the one x does not use volume but by flipping the phone you can turn it on and off and set how many flips and how fast for it to activate has debug feature but it worked on the first try with default settings have not tested when phone is off for an extended period of time but looks like it has potential will test more and it does not require root
Edit
After playing some more it seems it does not always work and when it does it opens to the app not my home screen. Kinda annoying well it was worth a shot.

The "Easy Wake" function on WidgetLocker does not work on the HOX.
Volume Rocker Wake works on CM9 Alpha 5
I've been using CM9 Alpha 5 for a few hours now and it's great !
The first think I set was the Volume Rocker Wake as the Power Button is not as easy to press when using most cases covering the power button.
To enable it, go to SETTING --> DISPLAY --> VOLUME ROCKER WAKE
it enables waking the phone by pressing the volume rocker EITHER up/down.
There is no way to specify one or the other
However, it works great ! I'm really liking CM9, my only complaint is the missing HTC Camera which was just amazing with the hardware burst (I'm still looking for a way to flash it if that's even possible).
As stated above, CM9 is your best bet. Or if AOKP is ever released for the HOX.

great app or rom feature idea????

I was wondering if this is already out there or maybe somebody can come up with a way o do this.
a lot of people complain about cameras not opening up fast enough and some phones not having a dedicated camera button.
what about having you camera turn on whenever you put your phone into landscape mode??
is it possible or already done?
I have not seen it but it sounds as a good idea until you want to use your phone in landscape mode for something else like viewing a photo from the gallery or watching a movie. What we need is to have someone come up with a way to use one of the buttons as a shutter button like the Blackberry Storm had and this way you take a photo as if you had a camera.
Using a hardware button is a relatively simple piece of coding - just trigger a specific run sequence when the button is pressed.
To trigger it based on the orientation of the phone would not only be much more difficult, but it would swallow the battery like Devine Brown swallows English actors just to keep monitoring the gyroscopic sensors on a constant basis.
Closest thing to this I have seen is nova action to long press menu key and bind it to camera and it opens or aokp/cm9 and lock screen shortcut it
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
I think that sounds like a cool feature, but I see a problem with it because I know a lot of people who always turn their phone sideways(even when not in a browser or anything), and that would pose a problem for them.
what about a widget to turn on off the feature, so that when u know ur going to be in a situation to take pictures and when not u can turn it off,
idk there has to be away i mean our freaking phones talk back now but we cant find a way to start up our cameras quicker???
probably only possible with a rooted phone and a button press + landscape mode
Cm10.1 has option for using power button as shutter action
