Samsung's new phone, A Galaxy S III Running Windows Phone 8 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Specs look to be identical.
Any chance we'll see a port? I know people will ask, "Why would you want to run Windows Phone?".
Well, just to see if we can of course.

Not bad

I wonder if Samsung will add TW "TouchWin" on top of Windows Phone 8, like they do w/ Android? Hehe, TouchWin sounds like a great wrapper for WP8 on an iWin device

Great, so how do we port it over here to our unlocked VZW SGS3? I'm kinda excited now, even though I'd switch right back to android as soon as I know I got WP8 to work on it.

looks exactly the same except for the battery

Its most likely like almost 80% sure we can get a port somehow. Unless it has changed the chipsets like using a different wifi chip or radio chip. Sure it'd probably boot and all that jazz but some stuff might not work because it doesnt use a linux kernel I dont think.

Great, can't wait to see the blue screen of death and fatal errors on my phone, together with all the other instabilities that come with windows. Oh, and a registry editor.

Maybe a launcher will be developed for android, kinda like Launcher 7. It won't be the full WP8 experience, probably won't be able to do hubs and stuff like that, but better than nothing.

It's happened to me on Windows7 on a dell pc a few times, it looks a little nicer and restarts after a memory dump, but it's basically the same, you just don't have to manually press the reset button.

I think being able to Multi-boot JB, iOS, and Windows 8 Mobile would be the coolest damn thing in the world.
The specs do look similar, and I wouldn't put it past the people in this community to have Windows 8 mobile running on the GS3 or the GN.

I haven't either.
Properly setup windows machines don't really do that anymore.
I use an I7 SLI tower setup I custom built when I'm home and it runs flawlessly with windows 7 pro.

IPhone Clone(WM6)

So yeah I got a IPhone clone that has WM6 and it's all running smoothly enough.
I've got a couple of issues that have lead me to think about flashing the ROM.
First off the processor is apparently always at 100% cpu even though most of the apps run fine and anytime I try to overclock the OMAP850 in it it'll just white the screen out.
So I figured maybe the ROM was a bit dodge and apparently so.
I got GEN_WM6_...
and according to the rom update utility my current ce image version is
Ôج$Øج$
Basically gibberish, when I try to run the update it complains that it can't connect to the phone.
I'm running Vista so that may have something to do with it as well. Also I don't know how to get the phone into bootloader mode as it doesn't have any front buttons just 2 for volume on the left and 2 on the right for camera and some unknown function.
Oh yeah, the other question, should I be able to flash any ROM image on to it as long as it's WM6? I'm not using Verizon, I'm using Optus in Australia.
Can anyone help me with this weird and well most probably extremely difficult problem as the phone isn't really mainstream.

You can't just get flash a rom for one phone another. It is really hard to determine which base rom is it because there are so many iPhone clones with WinMo.
Many have no technical support whatsoever, meaning there won't be an update from the clone's manufacture.

Forgive me for correcting you we3zy but I'm sure you mean you CANNOT use any roms other than your phone manufacturers version.
Finding out who the manafacturer is, is going to be a challenge for sure
I guess my main issue is that whenever I try to change the clock speed on it(it has a OMAP 850) the screen goes white and I have to do a soft reset to get it to work properly.

Wow, guess the iPhone just lost its advantage: its design. Now if they only could do the same with the nokia.....
These people can design the hell out of a handset but they run a crappy OS.

Gotta hand it to the Chinese. I would buy one of those iPhone-like handsets if they ran a WWE ROM.

Burning CD's with Android

So I've pretty much replaced my laptop with my transformer. Yea my laptop has a 17 inch screen, but to be honest with you its so big I never wanted to take it anywhere! Isn't a laptop supposed to be PORTABLE? I feel like I can (and should) take the TF everywhere. It seems tiny when docked, but just right when used as a tablet.
I love it.
The only thing stopping me from selling my laptop at this point is that I need to burn CD's occasionally. Is there any app out there that can access an external burner so that I can make CD's from music I have stored on my external drive?

Probably more a matter of time, at least if there's interest in it, but might be a long time. Didn't Honeycomb just add USB host support? I don't think it would've been possible before that.

Not necessarily at all, not all manufacturers provide Linux drivers for their hardware (Android is linux underneath it all). As well, I'm not sure exactly how Linux drivers work, but each CD burner might need their own set of drivers
If the iso drivers are in the kernel, the system will know about cd/dvd disks and drives. The issues is a program to do the burning.

So I plugged in my external DVD writer, and the kernel currently is not reconigzing it.
So that is step 1, someone adding the drivers into the kernel.
After that, it is simly a matter of re-building cdrecorder and mkisofs for an ARM target and writing a little UI on top of it.

I would dust the laptop back off......There are not enough devs or support for at least another 2 yrs to have a bug free Android OS. Also you have the first model of about 15 major tabs in the next 2 yrs! Just because it has a docking station means nothing. Don't get me wrong i love Android.....but leaving windows 7 and coming up 8????? Not to mention all the bugs because its a "beta" product. Actually i wouldn't even call this Alpha..Android OS should of release a GOOGLE laptop first with all the correct hardware specs and almost bug free before letting anyone put there OS on a tablet and sell it...Every Honeycomb tablet that has been made has issues. And its the hardware not being fully compatible.

If you replaced android with another operating system on your post, that can apply to any OS system on the planet. Be it windows, osx, Linux or what ever a company puts out. Not one OS or hardware is immune. Perfect software only happens when it's on the drawing board. The longer android is out the better it gets..but honeycomb has been out a very short time and is only on 5 percent of the devices running google OS. There are more then enough developers for it.
I'm looking for an external dvd burner to work with the TF also. Seems like a lot of TF owners are looking too. Hopefully someone with xda will develop the software...
Not exactly what you want but it might help
Check out this product.....It adds an extra step and it would be kinda kludgy at best.......It is a standalone cd burner.
http://www.cyberguys.com/product-details/?productid=11177
They also have a DVD burner. There may be others out there as well. I have been wanting this as well and don't really want to spend extra to get the capability right now at least.
Awesome! Definitely a solid solution. And a great idea in general! Thanks for the info

I don't think he's looking to reboot into a full-blown Ubuntu environment (where nothing else works) just to burn a DVD... The whole point of this thread is to get Android-native tools to do the burning - not setup some half-working OS to do the task...
I don't see what the Unix "cdrecord" and "mkisofs" utilities can't be ported over to Android. Although, I don't have the skills to do that, so maybe it's not such a trivial task...

[APP][Team.Fluxion]XP Mod Launcher (beta) [WinXP Launcher for Android]

Disclaimer: I am not a spokesperson for team.fluxion nor do I have any affiliation to them whatsoever. The app stated in this post is simply a public service announcement to those that enjoy/want the Windows PC experience on their Android powered device. All rights of this app goes to its respective owners.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have you ever wanted to get a PC quality experience on your Android powered device, then look no further! Windows XP is now on Android, well sort of. Thanks to the people in team.fluxion, who is no stranger to the development scene and has been pumping out applications since the good old windows mobile PPC days (Windows Mobile 5/6.x for the youngins reading this), as well as Windows desktop applications, we can now get a taste of Windows XP on our device, and for FREE . To save time, I will just use the description from their official Google Play page:
A legendary application for Windows Mobile Pocket PCs is back for Android as a launcher that imitates the look and feel of Microsoft Windows XP right on your Android device. It lets you explore your file system and open different file formats using default programs as assigned in your device. It also provides the common file system operations like copy, cut, paste and delete.
Short sweet and simple, right . This app is brand new (like first release new, hence the "beta" tag it's sporting) but it is amazing, and is very functional and fun for a beta release. I am running this on both my Evo 3D (qHD [540x960 resolution] screen, a bit small, but for those who are android tech savvy with some system partitions root permissions, just modify your build prop on the "ro.sf.lcd_density" line and add 40 to whatever your number is, or experiment with it different numbers. I think there's an app on the market for LCD density modification, too) and my Velocity Micro t408 cruz (its an 8 inch tablet, so no modification is really needed. I set my LCD density to 140 to make the status bar smaller though and it gives you a bit more screen real estate). Without further ado, here is the download link, completely free!
Download it here (Play Store Link) XP Mod Launcher
Oh and P.S. - They have a Windows XP boot animation that's cool too, check it out (surf their website, too) WinXP Boot Animation Android

Sorry for the ignorant question - but up til now with ICS being finaly an "up-to-par" (by my standards) and there actualy being hardware good enough to run it really nicely, ive always hated using android, hated the android experience completely, but now im thinking of getting my first android phone (galaxy s3) in a month or so and am wondering if i can use this kind of thing on it without rooting... im hoping not, thats the one thing i really waant out of android that i cant get on my iphone or windows phone, the really crazy apps like this without needing a jailbreak or a custom rom/interim unlock, those things make the phones very unstable in my experience and prefer to keep them stock

Just saw this over on PCW. Am very excited. I've already been using Glovebox for about two weeks, so the full Ubu OS would be great to try out on my H0X.
A quick comparison of other HTC devices listed seems to indicate that installation shouldn't be that much different from a standard unlock and install, except that it relies on ADB at the moment since it nukes your android install: So you'll have to push it via ADB rather than just flashing an image via CWM or TWRP. Looking at the DNA and the Desire for comparison seems to indicate that not all hardware drivers are currently fully linux compatible, so things like hardware buttons and cameras are going to take longer, as Android is a basdard child of linux and uses a few different structures, AFAIK

If I was more than a simple Software Engineer I would love to help, but I've never had to do anything like this.
Maybe I'll poke around to see what I can do, but I'm sure I'll just get in the way.

Can't wait to give this a go.. if i still have this phone by the time its released :good:
Definitely excited about this, can't wait to give this a whirl. Everything and anything Rohan makes its way onto my phone in one way or another. As always, thanks for all the hard work Rohan.
You're the man Rohan!
Also office on Linux?? Well I never thought I'd see the day!!

I love Rohan's work on the Evita, if it weren't for him I'd probably have given up on this phone and traded it in already. And knowing he's working on the ubuntu touch for our devices makes it that more likely that more people will use it.

[Q] Replace Android with W8.1

Has anyone replaced the Android ROM with W8.1 Successfully? If so where would we find the W 8.1 ROM.
There hasn't been any progress with this yet as it calls for a person to literally open their phone and dump the entire os and then more than likely adjust the partitions and such for the regular m8s. There's already a few threads on this subject with this information in them. If we do see any type of port it will probably be a while before we see anything from it.
I'm excited. I hope the devs are successful.
Just wondering why on earth anyone would want a windows phone?

Its mostly just having the option of going back and forth. I hate wp but I can't say I wouldnt dual boot if presented the option.
Reminds me of the HD2 days.
I think it'd be really cool to have the option.

Simple. I'd like to try it out, without having to commit.

My thoughts exactly, I have only ever played with WP in the store and that doesn't give you a feel of what every day life with the OS would be like.
Definitely would love to give it a shot

I used to have a 928 and I loved it... I used to switch between my HD maxx and that all the time it would be cool to swap back and forth on the same phone

Windows phones and Blackberries (older ones, don't know about newer ones nor do I know about iPhones) have working, functional, usable email clients which, so far, has totally eluded Android. Email is important to me, not enough to give up my Android phone but maybe to some it is?
There may be other reasons but for some people having a working email app is huge!
Android email apps fall into two classifications:
1. Totally Sucks and
2. Worse than Totally Sucks.
NOTE: All the above applies to POP3, IMAP works OK on any phone but that's due to the nature of IMAP, not to the email client.
