Official ICS RUU - Confirmed? - HTC Desire S

Hi,
I've been reading threads here about the HTC Desire S RUU from HTCDev. I was curious as to why it is not available in their site anymore. Isn't anyone curious? Are there bugs on it?
I've been wanting to install it but hesitant so I'd like to ask some noob questions before I do.
1. If I install it now and HTC decides to give out another update later on, will I still be able to get the update without doing any customization my phone?
2. If answer to question#1 is No, then Is it possible to return the original stock or official ROM and then get official updates?
Below are some information about my device:
Android version: 2.3.5
HTC Sense version: 3.0
Software number: 2.15.707.2
Kernel version:
2.6.35.10-ga76c374
[email protected]#1
Baseband version: 20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M
Build number: 2.15.707.2 CL190601 release-keys
Browser version: WebKit/533.1

Reason I'm asking is because I'm still hoping that HTC releases a Jelly Bean update later on.
Appreciate any help.

No chance. HTC Will never release anything beyond ICS for our (or probably any of the older) devices. There is no financial benefit to them doing so, but our Devs will probably come up with something decent anyway.
As for your other questions - search. Every one of them has been asked and answered repeatedly over the last few days and weeks.

There are 2 issue should be considered before updating:
1. Your phone is Asia WWE region (Software number x.xx.707.x), while the leaked RUU is for EU region (xx.xx.401.x). I'm not sure if it is able to install this RUU to phone with different region(?)
2. Your hboot is locked and S-ON. You have to unlock OR S-Off if you want to update by PG88IMG image.

I Live in India , and i update my desire s with RUU,

Hi,
I was able to update it successfully with this RUU. So far I had no problems with it. Below are my phone's new information:
Android version: 4.0.4
HTC Sense version: 3.6

Also I found an article on the internet (I'm not able to post the link right now). It says that an RUU is coming soon and this came from HTC. Does this mean the one they released a few days ago is not official? If this RUU comes out later on, can I still install it?
Edit: I just checked the HTCDev site and it seems the RUU is back. Seems to be the same one though.

Why, tell me why are you trying to install RUU when you are S-OFF. Everywhere on this forums is written with big letters, that you are not supposed to do that.
People, start reading, and you won't brick your devices. Read twice (at least) and then do anything..
Read forums and you will sure find a way to install this on S-OFFed phone.

Thank you for your info.
What is your experience with this ICS update? Is it stable, smoother and longer battery life than the old one?
Is there any trouble or bug?

Here's what I've observed so far:
Friendstream seems to be a whole lot faster and additional features are great like the addition of Groups in the Friends section. Might not be a big deal to others but I personally find this very good.
The People, Mail and Message app have better UI and some additional settings as well.
FB Chat from HTC has been added. I haven't personally tried it but looks promising.
I like the new YouTube UI, Talk and Gmail UI. Although I think I may have encountered a bug in Gmail but not sure. On its account settings, checking the Priority Inbox checbox seems to change Ringtone & vibrate option. But when you uncheck, it doesn't return the original setting for Ringtone & vibrate. Could be standard behavior?
Maps seems to be slower when using satellite. I never upgraded it when I was in GB and preferred to use the stock app.
Overall, performance seems to be a lot smoother compared to GB. Which makes me wonder how much difference it is with JB. UI is also a lot better.

thank you ads.underground for the informative review
F.Y.I, I have downloaded and checked the newest RUU file from the htcdev.com and it is identical as the RUU on the XDA few days ago.

yes it is for every region!

ICS crashy apps
I'm new at this, but step by step is always a good way to address a problem. I was keen to try out ICS on my plain old locked, unrooted, s-on, sim-free and what have you Desire S. I read alot of the advise on the leaked ruu and how it would be installed and what it would do. I have it installed and was looking forward to it showing off what it can do. Now, I know there was some news about flash support and ICS, last I heard flash was supported but would be the last version supported. I went about happily installing apps to get my phone somehing like what it was before I upgraded. I installed whatsapp, logged in to my gtalk account and installed a flash based justin.tv streamer. With the two messengers, any time I hit a sent link to open a browser the program would crash and terminate and the browser remained unran. With the tv streamer, firstly it runs much slower than with my previous stock android plus when wishing to view full screen the program would crash and terminate.
Nobody else seems to have these problems that I have read and it really spoils what is a very nice update for the Desire S

I am very curious abt this new RUU and thinking of getting this. I am HTC dev unlock. There are things I want to make sure before trying
1. Will I be able to root my phone again after installing
2. My 4ext recovery will it be deleted after install.
The only thing that's keeping me from gettin this is maybe there are custom roms that could be better.

1. Yes
2. Yes if you update by RUU. No if you update by PG88IMG.zip that will untouch your hboot and recovery

[Q] Why the radio has changed after a S-OFF and root?

Hi all,
I've recently S-Offed rooted my Desire S and I noticed something strange with the radio.
Before S-Offing and rooting I had this radio version (which is also in my signature now): 20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.11_M. Now I have this one: 20.28I.30.085AU:3805AU_3805.06.02.03_M, which is of course different from the previous one.
I didn't flash any new radio. Why I can see two different radio versions?
What version is your ROM? And is this the version that came on the phone?
Settings....about phone.....software info....build number?
Based on the Build number your signature shows you are now on the correct radio, see this thread
Swyped from HTC Desire S using XDA Premium
Thanks for replying ben_pyett,
The version of my ROM is the one reported in my signature: 1.47.401.4, and yes, it is the version that came on the phone (at least, it should be, since I performed an official upgrade by the phone itself, that brought me the 0.98.0002 hboot).

OK, I didn't notice that!
Anyway, I don't remember what build number I had before the upgrade that changed my hboot from 0.98.0000 to 0.98.0002. In particular if the build number was just 1.28.401.1.
So, the radio I have now is correct and it is still the official one.
Many thanks.
... going to update my signature with the current radio ...

Looks like the official upgrade you applied updated your ROM, radio and hboot.

For sure, I didn't check the Build number before the ROM upgrade, and actually the ROM list, shows every ROM with the respective RADIO, and all the things are clear now to me, thanks to your remark.

Hi everyone, need some help.
Just updated hboot from 6.98.0002 to 7.00.2002 and now I have *Locked*
7.00.2002 S-OFF and stuck at HTC logo...
So is there any way to get back to 6.98?

LoL!! Ya, ben_pyett also PM'ed me about the bug!
BTW, what's stranger than the hboot version, is that he has a Locked bootloader, while being S-Off! What's up with that?
Has his phone mutated??!!
I guess it is modified version of 2.00.2002 which has written *LOCKED* on top of it too (see here) so it is not a concern.
But better download and flash 2.00.2002 from the development thread here - it is tested and considered harmless unlike yours...
Or even better - use 0.98.2000 - you will get your full cache size with it, not like with the new one

I have tried to enter this field some time ago.
basically there are a bunch of guys who managed to make a reverse engineering on the bootloader files - this caused the birth of bootloaders for Desire S with versions 6.98.1000 and 6.98.1002. One of them had AlpharevX written on top, the other one had Revolutionary if my memory recalls me right. They had the engineering abilities in the form of Security OFF, more fastboot subcommands and protection from overwriting.
Then the 2.00.2002 appeared in the forums, clearly not a product of the Revolutionary team. But in each case (it can be an official leak or modified by another hacker) the guy who did it just has not replaced the top text (the particular string of code) with his custom one. So it remained *LOCKED* just like the stock 2.00.0002 bootloader, but with Eng abilities...
And now we see its clone here, but I cannot say what difference or benefits can it bring over the classic 2.00.2002 one...
@enigmaamit - Don't fry your brain with all this crap Anyone who s-off's via Revolutionary or XTC Clip and updates to hboot 2.00.2002 gets this. The "LOCKED" indicates the bootloader is not unlocked via HTC Dev.com but in our case, the security has been turned off, so the lock is useless. The lock can be easily bypassed, so it's possible to flash stuff with an S-On phone too, but since the security flag gives a security error if anything not signed by HTC is flashed, and prevents the phone from booting, the security needs to be turned off.
@Others - A google search told me that this is a bootloader released on a Russian forum. Nothing to get excited about, definitely not ICS related
@enigmaamit, again - Seriously, remove that bug. You clearly placed it there to "bug" us, you've fulfilled your purpose. I almost smashed my monitor with a magazine when i first saw it

Thank you for that insight... things are complicated enough with all the S-on, S-off, HTCDevil Unlock, RUU, Misc_version, CID, Goldcard, the infamous pain-in-the-rhetorical eMMC f***k-up and what not... and now this... Ughhh!! Things just keep getting more and more mysterious with each passing week! Sometimes i just feel like migrating to a Samsung, load up Odin, and forget about this non-sense!!
You kidding me??? Samsung is simple? The ROMs are baseband specific, and the wrong baseband causes issues, that's the reason why everyone is asking "What Radio is compatible with this ROM"? Also, i told you not to fry your brain with this crap, you have no reason whatsoever to have to know this. Ignorance is bliss......
Also, if you're like, you could never give up HTC Sense, so you must deal with this non-sense
Guys S-OFF/S-ON and LOCKED/UNLOCKED/RELOCKED are two different things. I have a phone that is s-offed with xtc clip. I flashed the latest RUU and I have the 2.** hboot and I'm LOCKED but yet still S-OFF.
EDIT: But the way, is this "full cache" thing is really important? I mean I can see that I always has like 90% of cache free anyway.

IMO nothing is simple in the world till you learnt. I M using Samsung and believe me its so simple for flashing anything. I owned DS little while ago. this is my first Htc phone. currently reading stickies. Simply I found little hard, coz I don't know much about RUU, Locked boot loader etc.

You are absolutely right. But why waste 150 MB? And for the record - I had the famous "Error: cannot mount cache" only once (not "fried" eMMC luckily), when I was using the new 2.00.2002 bootloader close to the date of its release. I am on 0.98.2000 since and had never encountered this issue again. And I have done quite some flashing...

yeah samsung is not simple. Installing a custom ROM was a pain on a friends S2 because there seemed to be a million ways to do it. At least with the Desire S it was clear what needed to be done.

Thanks mate, I remember seeing this thread ages a go but couldn't find it again
Hi, don't mean to hijack but my question is on the same topic. I've got a Htc Sensation XE which came branded on 02 Ireland. I since installed cm9 on it but would like to return to stock now as I want to use tv-out. My question is could someone please link me to the correct rom ruu. I can give you all the info you need, I have read the guide linked above and tried installing the generic european one but I just got stuck in bootloader. Been at it all day and am just totally stumped.
My phone details are.
S-OFF
HBOOT: Revolutionary Pyramid PVT 1.27.1100
FIrmware: 4.0.4
ROM: CyanogenMod 9.0.0-Pyramid
I changed my cid to 11111111 also but that did nothing.
So if anyone could point me in the right direction the help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
You have s-off,so you should be able to run an European RUU
You also have supercid,so it is just a question of getting into bootloader, plug in your USB cable, and run the RUU from your PC.

Hi,
Try :
RUU_PYRAMID_LE_ICS_35_S_HTC_Europe_3.32.401.105_R2_Radio_11.69.3504.00U_11.22.3504.07_M_release_253443_signed.exe
Don't worry if it's the wrong one,it will just give you an error.
Then,just try another.

now that you are on stock rom
you will get software updates based on your cid
verify the cid and also verify the devices with same cid have got ICS or not

You're in the right forum, this is the HTC One XL forum. You can't install official updates on a modified phone. Do you want to install official updates or do you want to install a custom ROM? They are very different methods.

That isn't true, they aren't identical, the HTC One XL and the HTC One X are completely different phones. Maybe you're thinking of the at&t One X?

Need bootloader details (first 5 lines in bootloader) before we can help at all. This will tell us whether the device is s-on of s-off, SuperCID, hboot version, etc.
Also, do you know how to get into recovery, and what recovery (TWRP or CWM) and version number.
Don't update anything until we tell you to. Its possible to brick the device without proper knowledge at this point.
Ok here are the details you asked:
LOCKED
EVITA PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
CID-11111111
HBOOT-1.14.0002
RADIO-0.19SA.32.09.11_2
OpenDSP-v29.1.0.45.0622

And i enter recovery only when i try to update it with official HTC update. Then the ClockWorthMod starts and said that installation is aborted.
I dont know how to enter there without trying to install that update sry...

So it won't go into recovery, when you select recovery from the hboot menu?
Also, you didn't answer timmaaa's question about whether you want to install an official update, or to install a custom ROM.
Oh yes it enter Clokworkmod v5.8.3.1
I would like lastest official update for this phone, but do you guys think that is better solution? Are custom better then official?

Which is "better" is a personal choice, and we can't make that choice for you. Also, there are custom ROMs that are close to stock, but clean of bloatware and with some other optimizations.
Whether you pick official firmware or a custom ROM is up to you. But you are already setup for flashing custom ROMs, so that would just be a matter of picking one (or try a couple) that look good, putting them on the SD and flashing in custom recovery.
The reason your phone will not install the latest official update, is that the OTA needs to have stock recovery to install (and you have custom recovery installed). If you want to be on official firmware, its probably best to find the latest RUU for your carrier, run the RUU. Then OTA to the latest update.
Tnx for everything man, i looked for custom ROM and i decided that might be better then officiall update. It have newest android version and sense 5.0 so i think i am going to use custom.
But all of them are look the same... Can you recommend some good ones because you are experienced on that field and i am total newbie. TNX
I don't know about redpoint but I would say that it all depends on what you want. If you want stock sense 5 att experience go with cleanrom 7. If you want almost every mod imaginable go with viper xl 4.2.0 then there are other roms that are in between. There are 2 stock ROMs as well as one ported ROM. Depends on prefrances. 2 things to know though. If you want sense 5 you need to run 3.18 ruu and upgrade the hboot to 2.15. then get the latest recovery of your choice.

Asking for a ROM recommendation isn't allowed, to say one ROM is better infers that others are inferior in some way. This isn't fair to the devs who spend their spare time bringing us these ROMs free of charge. I know @phonegeekjr has already recommended one but he shouldn't have. It's up to the user to have a look through the ROMs that are available and make a choice.
You do need to run the 3.18 RUU though, and then flash the 2.15 firmware package in order for any Sense 5 ROM to run without signal loss or random reboots.

Didn't look at it that way. Am very sorry to all devs.won't happen again

You want to install the entire 2.15 firmware package to run Sense 5 ROMs, not just upgrade the hboot. Upgrading hboot does close to nothing, at least for potential signal drop and reboot issues on Sense 5 ROMs.

If they all look the same, then you need to read more and understand what the various features mean.
Really, in the time you asked for a recommendation and waited for a response, you could have just flashed a ROM and started trying it out.

I had some problems to downgrade hboot yesterday.
One S seemed lost and no RUU 4.1.1 flashed properly for me
This RUU literally saved up my phone and everything is back to normal
So I thought to share it with you all .....
but someone here already knew this RUU

I found it two days ago here (#422) but I had no more infos about what it really updates.
I asked them on the thread but.. you were faster :good:
this update (the zip only, not the RUU installer that is the original one) is out since September (for what i can remember it was posted on a chinese forum one day before Llabtoofer Maximus HD 10 release) and it's not signed, so you need to be S-OFF

It was just a warning since there are no signatures and it's not the official RUU, but a modded one, so flashing this RUU (or the original leaked PJ40IMG_VILLE_U_JB422_SENSE50_MR_HTC_Europe_4.05.401.1_Radio_1.20.50.05.16_10.31.50.08_release from mid september) will fail on S-ON devices

I'll try now this version, but after flashing elementalX the phone go to bootloop.
Than I restored MaximusHD and change Phone.apk of this rom in to system/app but...it doesn't work, than I think that this rom isn't identical to the MaximusHD.
Anyone tried elementalX on this version?
