This guide is intended for Telstra One XL users in Australia Only. If you are not using this handset then please leave this thread now as this process MAY NOT work for you as I have no way of confirming.
Recently I have seen an increase in the amount of questions on what we (Telstra users) need to do to Root and/or Unlock the Bootloader on our phones. This guide is intended to have all of this information in one place so that all Telstra users can have a quick reference point to this info so that we don't clog up the forums with many posts.
I am not to be held responsible for any problems or paper weights that you may have/create while using these methods. In saying that, these methods and tried, true and tested by many users here on the XDA forums. Any problems that you may have can be posted in this thread or in the Q&A sections of this forum.
Now onto the good stuff....
To be able to install a Custom ROM onto your Telstra HTC One XL you DO NOT need to root your phone (unless using Goo Manager to install recovery but more on that later.), all you need to do is Unlock the Bootloader and then install a Custom Recovery through fastboot.
If you have any questions about the below processes then please post in this thread so that we can assist you with all the information that you need to know.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to get Root permissions - 1.81 Only
Please note: Root is only achievable if your software number starts with 1.81. To check this go to Settings > About > Software Information > Software Number. If the version is 1.89 then you will not be able to root your phone.
1. Go to the HTC Website and download HTC Sync Manager from here. Once installed ensure that it is not running. You can do this by going to Task Manager (Right Click Taskbar > Start Task Manager) > Processes > Then end the HSMServiceEntry.exe and htcUPCTLoader.exe processes.
2. Download the attached onxr.zip file that contains the files required to Root your phone.
3. Create a new folder on C:\ Drive called Android and then extract the Zip file into that location.
4. Connect up your phone to your computer using the USB cable that came with the phone.
5. Enabled USB Debugging. Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging
6. Make sure the phone is in Charge Only mode by pulling down the Notification bar from the top of your screen, pressing on USB Connection Type and selecting Charge Only.
7. Browse to C:\Android and find the correspodning file to your operating system:
Windows - root.bat
Linux - root-linux.sh
Mac OSX - root-mac.sh
8. Wait for the script to finish and your phone to restart once or twice.
9. Once the phone completes it's reboots open your App Drawer and confirm that the SuperSU application is present. Open the app and click Ok to update your SU Binaries.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to Unlock the Bootloader
1. Before starting browse to here. Download and install HTC Sync Manager but do not start it.
2. Also download the attached adb-fastboot.zip file on this post and extract it to C:\Android\. You should now have adb.exe and fastboot.exe files in this folder along with some .dll files.
2. Go to HTCDev.com
3. Click Register at the top of the screen and setup your account.
4. Once completed browse to http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/unlock-instructions.
5. Unfortunately we cannot remove the battery so start from Step 2 and follow all the way down to Step 4 then click 'Proceed to Step 5'.
7. Scroll down to Step 6 as we have already extracted the ADB and Fastboot file, then click 'Proceed to Step 8'.
8. Follow the steps on screen until you have your Device Identifier Token. Place this token into the text box provided and click 'Submit'.
9. HTC will then email your Unlock Code to you. Once you receive this file save it to C:\Android\ with the other files from earlier.
10. Follow Steps 12 and 13.
11. Your device now has an Unlocked Bootloader.
12. To relock your Bootloader to run an RUU, simply run fastboot oem lock from command prompt.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to Install TWRP Custom Recovery
Please note: This step can only be attempted after Unlocking your Bootloader. If your Bootloader is not unlocked then you will not be able to complete this step.
1. Browse to the TWRP HTC One X (Evita) webpage.
2. Download the latest TWRP recovery img under the 'Download Recovery Image' section of the page. Current version (2.2.2.0) as of 29/08/12 here.
3. Download the attached adb-fastboot.zip file on this post and extract it to C:\Android\. You should now have adb.exe and fastboot.exe files in this folder along with some .dll files.
4. Turn off your phone.
5. Hold down the Volume Down button and then the Power button until a basic text menu appears on your screen with a white background.
6. Using your Volume Up and Down Buttons and your Power button as your Enter button select 'fastboot' from the list of options. If you have HTC Sync installed correctly your screen should now say FASTBOOT USB.
7. Click on Start > Run (Windows Key + R) then type: cd C:\Android\
8. Then enter the following command. Once this command is entered it will copy the recovery to your device and flash this custom recovery.
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.0-evita.img
Note: The name of the recovery file will change when a new version is released. If you are using Windows 7 the best way to ensure the name of the file is correct is to type the first few letters and then press the TAB key on your keyboard.
9. After the recovery has been flashed to your phone successfully you will need to select reboot from the menu on your phones screen and then recovery. This will reboot your phone into the TWRP Recovery mode, from here you will be able to flash ROMs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to install a ROM using TWRP
1. Download the ROM you would like to Flash to your phone and copy it across to your SD Card.
2. Reboot your phone into Recovery.
Stock ROM: Turn off your phone. Hold Volume Down and Press the Power Button for 3 seconds and then let go of the Power Button but keep holding Volume Down until the white bootloader screen is show. Once here select Recovery from the list on screen using the Volume Up and Down buttons then using the Power Button to select the recovery open.
Custom ROM: You may be able to reboot into recovery from the Power Menu, otherwise use the above method.
3. Create a Nandroid Backup. To do this you need to press the Backup button and select only System and Data. Name your backup with the name of the ROM and the date you are doing the back in case you need to restore this backup at a later date.
4. As a general rule of thumb before flashing a new ROM I do the following. (You don't have to use this method, you may be advised to use a different method depending on the ROM so please check their install instructions.
Go to Wipe. Then wipe in the following order:
Cache
Dalvik Cache
System
Factory Reset
5. Go back to the main TWRP screen. Select Install
6. Browse your SDCard and find the ROM .zip file and click on it.
7. Swipe to install.
8. Follow the prompts, if there are any, for the ROM you are installing.
9. Once the install has finished then select Reboot to System.
APNs
You may be required to enter in your APN settings if your not using a Telstra Based ROM. To enter these APNs go to Settings > Mobile Network > Access Point Names > Menu > Add. Once entered in make sure you select the orange radio button to enable the APN.

Tweaks
Build.prop Edits
After installing a Custom ROM that isn't built for Telstra Users it is suggested that you add the following edits to your Build.prop file:
Code:
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=24
ro.ril.enable.amr.wideband=1
To make these edits you will need to install a file explorer like 'ES File Explorer'. Once installed ensure that it has root permissions and that the File System is mounted as writable.
1. Browse to /system/, long press on build.prop and select edit.
2. Find the above entrys and ensure that they are the same as above. If they don't exist then enter them as they appear above.
3. Save the newly edited build.prop.
4. Reboot your phone.
Note: The wideband change will not work on CyanogenMod 10. We have submitted something to the issue tracker here to try and get this resolved for us.
Telstra One App
The latest TelstraOne app is now available on the Google PlayStore here.

Great work, well written mate, I'm sure it'll help a lot of newbies.
Only thing I noticed was the software version of 1.85 - Telstra roms start from 1.81 then jump up to 1.89.
1.85 was more AT&T if I'm not mistaken.

Would you be running CM10 by any chance? I haven't managed to get it working with it yet.
If it's a sense rom it should appear in the app drawer as soon as you copy it over.

Mac...?
Hi guys, thanks for the info. I'm on a mac, do you guys know of any tools to use to unlock my XL?
You can unlock the phone (assuming you bought one from Telstra) by going to HTCDev. You'll need fastboot to complete the process though.
(Unfortunately xda doesn't allow me to post links here yet, but googling should take you to the right place)
Thanks, I managed it. The instructions are quite windows based but it was simple enough once I worked out that the process is mostly OS agnostic if you exchange fastboot for fastboot-mac and use terminal on OS X. Using CM10 nightly, like it.
Thankyou worked a charm with a couple of exceptions.
I installed aokp_evita-jb-rohan-build3
Working good over the weeked
APN I automatically had 4 APN's come up one of which name Telstra internet wPortal which had you settings so I selected that.
Telstra App It appeared fine after doing you instructions but only after rebooting the phone
Couldn't test 4G as I live outside coverage but work inside, 4G didnt appear inside the coverage zone this morning and this was when I edited the Build.prop and
after rebooting, nothing, blank screen and I left it a while, tried a couple more times to boot and it appeared to be dead. Had an original backup that I could restore. Will test again later
Will have to find out what the missing 4G issue was after reinstalling

The best APN i have used on an AOSP rom is the one without 'w/Portal' in the title.
As for the build.prop edits, I can't confirm if these actually do anything in AOSP. I'm still yet to test this out myself. I assume that the HD Voice edit will work but I doubt the that HSDPA change will work.
[EDIT] question solved

Thanks for the guide!
How different is the One X AT&T to the One XL? e.g. can we use the "One X All in One Kit" to unlock the One XL bootloader?
What are peoples opinions on custom ROMs? The One X has Android Revolution HD but there doesnt seem to be anything earth shattering for the XL due to a far smaller userbase. Are the stock ROMs with root good enough?

As far as I can tell, these are the only detailed instructions here for obtaining Permanent Root (and S-OFF). Hit THANKS if you feel inclined...
Just to be clear, this is not my basework, but I've assembled all the pieces and instructions to make it work for the MT4GS! Thanks to revolutionary, modaco, teamWin, eugene373, idanfima, coolbho3000 and wisefire for the easyfrevo part!
Temp Root:
You must have the USB drivers installed for your MT4GS. (If you don't have them, you can always install HTC Sync for the Sensation, plug in your MT4GS, and it will install the correct drivers.)
You MUST exit from the HTC Sync application for this to work!! (Right-click on the icon in the taskbar, and select Exit)
You must also have USB Debugging enabled. (Settings, Applications, Development, USB debugging)
Click-For-perma-temp-v2.zip
As of this update (23 Feb 2012), this has the latest SuperUser.apk...
Unzip, and run the batch file (Run_ME_Fr3vo_ROOT.bat)...
You'll get errors like "An error occurred while running the exploit (-1) (errno: 14)", but if it also says "Exploiting device" afterwards, then it was successful!
This is temp-root, meaning that you can run apps that require root, but it'll go away when you reboot. Run the script again to get root back.
Permanent Root: (thanks to ikhzter for helping with some of the instructions!)
NOTE: If you don't have ADB working (or don't know what ADB is), please download the drivers and files for the temp-root above, and be sure to save the revolutionary.exe into the same directory as the temp-root solution. Make sure you have HTC fastboot drivers as well (if you don't already), which are on the Revolutionary page.
Or use the tools provided here: Click-For-ADB-Windows.zip
(Zip contains ADB.EXE FASTBOOT.EXE ...)
Thank you Team Revolutionary! If you would like to be one of the first to get PERMANENT root access, then download the new Revolutionary, instructions here:
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
Revolutionary version 0.4pre3 or later will work with your MT4GS, but it's still a developer preview... Don't come yelling if you mess up your phone. (But do share your results, so we can collectively solve any issues!)
You'll need your serial number (Settings, About, Phone Identity), HBOOT version (only 1.44.0007 is supported now, but you can check your HBOOT by: Settings, Power, uncheck "Fast Boot", then power off, hold down volume down as you power on, the HBOOT version is at the top of the screen). Be sure to write down your Beta Key! (Or copy it to your clipboard so you can paste it into your command prompt.)
Note: you can also enter bootloader by issuing the command "adb reboot-bootloader" if you have the ADB & drivers installed (follow the Temp Root instructions above for drivers and ADB).
YOU MAY NEED TO DISABLE YOUR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM- Norton is flagging up Revolutionary as a Virus when it isn't.
With the phone switched on (not in HBOOT, just the regular home screen), run the revolutionary Utility you just downloaded from http://revolutionary.io/ and if it has found your device it should read
"Found your device: myTouch_4G_Slide..." (If it doesn't, see DEBUGGING, below)
Once you have entered your beta key correctly, follow any on screen prompts or actions from revolutionary and wait for it to S-Off,
You're done. Your Device will Successfully have S-OFF.... If you have S-off, your hboot will now be 1.44.1107
Revolutionary will now ask you to Install clockwork recovery mod after S OFF. While you may choose to let Revolutionary do it for you (easiest, but it installs an older version with some USB charging issues), you can always do it manually, which I show below.
Hit THANKS!
You now have S-OFF on your MT4GS! Woo hoo!
Next, we'll flash the latest ClockWork Recovery (v4.0.0.9 without the charging problem) if you didn't do it above: (Thanks to Paul O'Brien / Modaco!!)
Download the ClockworkMod image file from here or here (direct mirror)
Turn off the device.
Boot device into bootloader (power off and boot while holding down the volume-down key, then select FASTBOOT with the power button)
Make sure the device is in FASTBOOT and not HBOOT
Connect the device to the computer via USB.
On your computer, open a command prompt/terminal and run:
fastboot devices
You should see something similar to:
List of devices attached
HTXXXXXXXXXX device
Write the image to the recovery partition ('fastboot flash recovery /path/to/<recovery>.img')
Do a recovery reboot to test (power off and boot holding down the volume-down key, select recovery)
Now you can flash the latest SuperUser. (Thanks to ChainsDD!)
Go to http://androidsu.com/superuser/ or download it directly here.)
Copy this file to your SD card root folder (main folder of your memory card)
Start clockworkmod recovery (hold down the Volume-Down key while turning on the phone), select Recovery
BACKUP YOUR ROM USING CWM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ROOT!
Navigate to "Backup & Restore" using the Volume Down button and press select (power button to select) then select "Backup"
Select "install zip from sdcard" after backing up
Then select "Choose zip from sdcard"
Then select "Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip" (or whatever file you obtained from above)
Then select "Yes - install Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip" to confirm (some have had to flash this a few times)
Then go back
Then reboot.
You're rooted!
I highly recommend going to the Market once you've rebooted and install "Busybox," which many rooted apps will assume is already installed.
Download "Root Checker" to make sure everything is done correctly!
Please help with these instructions.... provide feedback if I can make something more clear!
NEW! Video Instructions:
DEBUGGING:
If the Revolutionary exploit hangs or seems to be taking a very long time... or if it fails altogether, then please install my Temp-Root solution above first. Then, try the perm-root again.
Try installing the same drivers that I listed on the first post for the Temp-Root solution. Also, make sure you've exited from HTC Sync on your PC. (it will say "out of date" if HTC Sync is still running)
And make sure you have USB debugging enabled.
If Revolutionary still fails to find your phone, re-verify you have all the drivers installed, (uninstall and reinstall) and try "disk drive" mode and then "charge only" mode.
Still can't figure out how to get fastboot to work? Try this post for a quick solution.
For those having GPS issues after this process, try installing "BusyBox" from the Market and then installing the app "FasterFix" from the Market.
I certainly welcome feedback... and I appreciate your THANKS!

HTC G1
HTC Nexus One
HTC Sensation
HTC My Touch 4G Slide
Tested this just now. Working just fine without any problems. Thank you so much!

Aw, man, your use of "perma" in the subject threw me.
I downloaded ChiefzReloaded's link for the Linux version of this script (hsi thread here was closed for some reason, but he posted the same thing at RootzWiki) and converted it to Windows and ran it for mine. It works great, as does your version. But as you point out, it doesn't get rid of the S-ON. We'll have to wait for those awesome Revolutionary folk, I guess.
Many thanks for bundling this up so well for Windows, multi-uploading it, and posting about it here. You rock!

The history behind the title:
For other devices (Sensation, EVO 3D), an earlier version of this method yielded a temp-root that went away after a short period of time even if you didn't reboot. The solution was to leverage the "/vendor/bin" directory in the PATH, which made the root "stick"... permanent until the next reboot!
And so was born the term "perma-temp-root."
Worked for me. I actually needed root access to run Titanium Backup since I had to wipe my phone too. haha thanks!
Very cool of you sir, thank you
And we inch closer to permaroot for S-ons...can't wait...
works for me too. Well done .

So on this post they've got the Sensation S-Off. I'm wondering if this will work with our myTouch 4G Slides:
http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...s-off-tool-released-for-htc-specific-devices/
No, not yet; it checks for the phone type before it does anything, and the Doubleshot / 4G Slide is not yet supported. They're in the process of examining it to figure things out, though. There was some trouble with the US T-Mobile Sensations at first, but that was overcome.
Unfortunately, the XTC Clip apparently won't work on the 4G Slide, so let's hope they can get it S-OFF'd. They're pretty much our only hope.

With temp-root, when you run titanium to uninstall or freeze stock apps, do those apps reappear when you reboot?
I know you lose root during reboot, but I wonder if uninstalling a stock app will be replaced after reboot.

It replaces them after a reboot. My guess is that it does a hash check on the /system partition and then if it fails it reflashes it.
If you freeze them, they will stay frozen after a reboot. Not as great as an uninstall... but better then nothing
You can freeze apps with Titanium Pro, but if you dont have Titanium Pro(about $7), Easy Freezy is on sale right now(about $2). Works just as good https://market.android.com/details?id=com.modaco.easyfreezy
PS: Temp-root worked great! Wonder how hard it would be to package this into an app that you can have run when the phone boots. Kinda like the temp-root app VISIONary made for the G2.

me too
hope someone has a way. I've been trying for three days to root this phone and nothing works so far. Not sure if [email protected] has done anything or not to prevent rooting.
Step 1. http://androidforums.com/huawei-son...nmod-7-2-zad-rom-v-1-5huawei-u8650-sonic.html
Download and unzip the "Drivers Huawei (adb drivers)" to your desktop and install the drivers. Also download and unzip the "Custom CM Recovery" to your desktop as you will need it later.
Step 2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582
Create a folder named DooMLoRD-v4 on your desktop and Download DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su.zip and unzip it to that folder.
Put your phone into USB debugging mode and run the "runme" batch file in the DooMLoRD-v4 folder on your desktop. When done your phone should be rooted.
Step 3. Open the Custom CM Recovery folder and run the "Instalador" batch file
you now should have a rooted AT&T Fusion with ClockworkMod Recovery installed on it.
Step 4. http://androidforums.com/huawei-son...nmod-7-2-zad-rom-v-1-5huawei-u8650-sonic.html
Scroll down and you will find two custom roms that you can download and install on your phone with CM Recovery. Before you install open up the "system" folder and open the build.prop file in notepad once opened go to edit and in the drop down you should see a replace option. Replace "u8650" with "u8652" so that in your info your phone will have the right model number and save it.
Thanks!

Try and download the newest version of superuser and make a root file on the sd card. After that superuser is downloaded, put the file into the root file and wait for it to transfer, then when thats finished power off the phone and put it into recovery mode and apply update from SD card and choose zip file. Choose the superuser update and let it go through the process. Once its finished reboot device and you have root. Now all you have to do is flash a custom recovery on it and load a rom.
Let me know how it works!

had same problem...this will fix it
First thing that you want to do is root your phone. I have done this twice with this method and it has worked great both times.
1) ROOTING YOUR FUSION:
This is the method that worked for me. It was already stated in another thread on this forum:
QUOTE from : charliedrums....
"Here is what I did: (this tutorial was done by sd_james over at xda developers)
1. You need to install the latest Android SDK (search google for latest version)
2. download SuperOneClick v2.3.3
3. Follow the instructions and make sure that you have set your Settings > Development > USB Debugging box checked. I also set Unknown sources checkbox on.
4. Type in the following code on the phone keypad
*#*# 2846579 #*#*
This will open up the Service Mode
Go to Project Menu > Background Settings > Log Settings
Turn on Log Switch and set Log Level Settings to Verbose
go back one screen

Go to Dump and Log and place a check in all log settings.
Reboot the phone

This method doesn't work on my old Consumer Cellular AT&T Huawei U8652, just hangs at Step #7 "Waiting for device"
Typed this up for a friend I thought it would be nice to share with any new droid charge owners looking for a guide to how to root FP5.
Major Credit goes to:
trparky
I learned how to do this from his website:
Tom's Android Knowledge Base -- Offline
Root Stock Droid Charge FP5:
First download this tool:
MD5-Checker
It will be used to run an md5 check on the files before they are flashed to your phone.
Next download this:
http://www.toms-world.org/android/download/ftp/ODIN3+v.1.82.exe
MD5: 3D8E8240F2A4F66E63A6622F65C7C909
This is Odin the *Windows* program used to interact with your phone.
Next download this:
0817_charge_recovery.tar.md5
MD5: 925D33E1AD40518AAC09B179DFDB0F76
This is CWM your main interface that will be used when loading roms, etc
Finally download this:
http://downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.2-RC3-arm-signed.zip
MD5: 6462AC14CD38ED7C539CE3E29A6B92A8
This is the file that you flash to root your phone.
Run MD5 Tool to make sure all the MD5's match the previous MD5 checksum!
1. Open the MD5 program
2. Select create an MD5 checksum
3. Browse to the file that needs to be checked
4. Verify that the MD5 created matches the ones above (if they don't re-download)
5. Repeat for all files
Now you have all the files downloaded to root your phone. The steps to root stock droid charge are as follows:
Copy files to SD card
1. On the home screen select settings
2. Select USB setting and turn on USB debugging
3. Plug in your phone to your computer (give it a min to install drivers)
4. Pull down your top bar and select "Connect storage to PC" button
5. Create a new folder called Downloads
6. Drag the Superuser-3.2-RC3-arm-signed.zip file into the Downloads folder that you just created
7. Hit the "Disconnect from storage PC" button on your phone
CWM
8. Turn off your phone
9. Once the phone is completely off take out the battery
10. Open Odin then while holding the volume button down plug your phone into the computer
11. When you get the Yellow triangle with android in it your in download mode, plug battery back in.
12. On the left under option uncheck Auto Reboot (you and leave F. Reset Time checked)
13. Once Odin picks up your phone (a yellow com box will show up) click on PDA and browse to the CWM file and select it
14. Click start (it should be a quick flash)
15. Once the flash says successful take out battery and unplug phone
Superuser
16. Put your battery back in the phone
17. Hold down volume up and home (button on bottom of phone that has an up arrow) and the power button
18. Once you see the Samsung logo release the power button but continue to hold down the volume up and home button down
19. Once your phone has booted into CWM(there will be a banana at the bottom of the screen) arrow down with the volume button and select mounts and storage with the power button
20. Arrow down to the option that says mount system and use the power button to select it
21. Arrow down and select go back
22. Arrow down and select install zip from sdcard
23. Select choose zip from sdcard
24. Arrow down and select Downloads
25. Select the file that says Superuser-3.2-RC3-arm-signed.zip
26. Arrow down and select Yes - Install Superuser-3.2-RC3-arm-signed.zip
27. Select Go Back
28. Select Go Back
29. Select reboot system now
Let the phone boot up go the market and install root check it should say you’re rooted. Then your all done your phone has root that wasn't so hard was it
If you still are unsure or run into any problems feel free to send me a pm I would be happy to help you through the process via skype.
The link to the recovery file you mentioned in this post points to http://www.imnuts.org/downloads/charge/1209_charge_recovery.tar.md5.
Please update your link.
I no longer have permission to distribute the CWM file that imnuts made. The file has also been removed from the file system path that the web server has access to, meaning that it's outside of the public_html folder.
I do realize that some people still want the older 4.0.1.4 version of CWM but you will have to ask Imnuts for that file. Like I said, I do not have permission to distribute that file anymore.

I cant get the md5 for match for this file. I've downloaded over and over and it still doesnt match. what do i need to do?

The others matched with no problem.
Help!
The correct MD5 signature for that file is 9C41377FDCDB341310BC8C25D0794D6D.
A one-step ODIN using dwitherell's deodexed odin rooted stock file as described here is so much simpler, IMO.
how to get the Root? There is a method in one click.

Didnt think there was a one click for our device? Didnt see it listed.
No, there isn't a "one-click-root" for the Droid Charge.

I'm pretty sure there is no one click root for our DC. Im not a fan of one click root learning how to root manually will get you comfortable with flashing with Odin and CWM which you will need to flash roms, kernels, etc.

Props to you ztkryan!!
Spent hours trying to find something simple to explain this process. There are tons of people trying to explain this but nobody can seem to do it in a step by step list.
Simple, clear and concise ;D
I did all the following steps as stated, and when I run Root Checker, it states "Sorry, you do not have proper root access."
Am I the only one receiving this error? Does anyone know what I am doing wrong perhaps?

ALL:
It has been a long time since I posted to this thread. Back then, the Samsung Exhilarate had just come out, and there was no way to root it. Thanks to several other members, most notably j3r3goss and shabbypenguin, I was able to get root on this phone. As of now, this post is very old. The instructions here, are not needed for you to root your Samsung Exhilarate anymore. You are free to read through them, but you should pay attention to the last page (currently page 3). There, j3r3goss posted a link to the the TWRP or CWM recovery files, that you can now use to get root, without following the step-by-step instructions I posted below. I'm leaving the thread up, but for all intents and purposes, consider it closed.
Here's the link to the section you need in order to root your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=32520094
It has been fun, and I've been using my Exhilarate for nearly two years. Because I've been extremely busy, I haven't had time to keep up with the latest changes - but others have. I hope that you found these instructions useful.
In any case, take care and ROOT ON!
Everything past this point is old and no longer applicable
==========================================
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have UPDATED your phone to ICS, and want to root it, these instructions will work. You will not need to do the last part where you need to update the firmware keys!
Do you plan to update your phone from Gingerbread (Android 2.3) to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). Do that first! Otherwise, you'll just have to root again (not that that's a problem, but why???)
I) How to update to ICS:
1) Download Samsung Kies from here: http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/ if you haven't already, and install it, and then run it
2) Put your phone into ODIN (Download mode - see section II below).
3) When Kies detects you phone (your computer will need to install drivers, and then Kies will say it's connecting to your phone, and it will take about 3-4 minutes and finally connect to it), it should let you know that there is an update. Just follow the instructions on Kies and be patient. The phone will update, and once it reboots into normal mode, you'll know it's updated by going to "Settings" and if they are grouped into different sections, then you have ICS. Otherwise, you probably still have GB.
II) How to enter ODIN Mode:
For the Exhilarate I've found it's best to use this sequence:
1) Power phone down
2) Plug the USB cable into your computer (do not plug the phone into the USB cable yet).
3) While pushing and holding both the vol up and vol down buttons, plug the phone into the computer. As soon as you see "SAMSUNG" flash and then dissappear, release the buttons.
4) Phone should boot into ODIN mode.
III) How to Root
What you need:
1) Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate phone (unrooted)
2) microSD Card (any size of 1GB or larger will work)
3) USB cable to connect your phone to your computer
4) Files below
First, download all the files...
1) Download the latest version of ODIN here: ODIN.
2) Download the drivers here: Samsung Galaxy Drivers and run the setup program after unzipping.
3) Download the tar file here: www.Shabbypenguin.com/OUDstuff/Blaze4G/Clockworkmod-Blaze-4G.tar Don't mess with it, just download it somewhere where you can find it later
4) Download SuperUser here: SuperUser Save it somewhere where you can find it later.
Second, conduct the root:
1) Put your phone into Odin (Download mode - see Section II above).
2) With phone in ODIN mode, run Odin.1.85.exe (it's in the folder where you unzipped ODIN too).
3) Odin will launch on your computer. It should show, in the first box under ID:COM, a port in yellow. Mine was Port 5. This means you have successfully connected to your phone.
4) Click the button in ODIN labeled "PDA", and then browse to the .tar file you downloaded above and then select "Open". The file will show up next to the PDA button.
5) Make sure that "Re-Partition" is NOT checked!;
6) Click "Start" and wait till your phone reboots. It should reboot into normal mode. If it doesn't, just power down and reboot into normal mode.
7) Copy the SuperUser.zip file you downloaded above to your phones microSD card.
8) Reboot the phone into recovery mode: While pushing and holding both the vol up and vol down buttons, push the power button. As soon as you see "SAMSUNG" flash, release the buttons. You shouldn't need to have the phone connected to the computer this time. The phone will boot into CWM recovery.
9) using either: the "menu" button to move down and the "home" button to move your selection up; or alternately the volume down button to move down, and the volume up button to move up: highlight "install zip from sdcard". Use the "search" button or power button to select/enter.
10) highlight "choose zip from sdcard" and press the "seach" button to select it.
11) browse to the directory which you copied SuperUser to and select it.
12) scroll down to "Yes - Install Superuser" and select it.
13) Once done, reboot your phone into normal operating mode.
14) If rooting Gingerbread, see Section IV below.
15) If rooting either Gingerbread or ICS, see section V below.
16) If having issues with Root, see section VI below.
IV) Rooting Gingerbread?:
Last: Finish up (Steps 1-4 are ONLY needed if you are still using GingerBread and not Ice Cream Sandwich):
NOTE: Your buttons (the four at the bottom) WILL NOT work at this point. You need to do the following:
======
1) Push your phone dialer as if you were going to make a call.
2) Dial *#*#2663#*#*.
3) You will see the attached thumbnail below on your phone (stolen from j3r3goss).
4) press the bottom button that says "Touch key FW update". Wait. Once it's finished, your bottom row of buttons will work again!
Note: If you are on GB, and not ICS, every time you boot into recovery and then back into operational mode, you will need to do the four steps in this section above!
======
V) Using either GB or ICS:
You do need to do these last steps (I believe):
5) ADDENDUM/UPDATE: At this point, there is one last thing you need to do!: You must go to "Settings/Applications/Development" and Enable USB Debugging! If you don't do this, you will NOT be able to get root access! Also, if for any reason you turn off USB Debugging, make sure you turn it back on! If you lose root access, check this FIRST! If you still can't get root access, boot into recovery mode and wipe the Dalvik Cache, the regular Cache, and "Fix Permissions". Then double check to make sure USB Debugging is ENABLED!
6) You're done! Your phone is now rooted and you can do whatever you want! :highfive:
VI) TROUBLESHOOTING:
If you run into problems
1) Check to make sure that SuperUser is installed on your phone. Check the apps section first, and then, use RootExplorer and check the System/bin folder. If you see SuperUser is in the system/bin folder, then you are very close to being rooted.
If it is not installed:
a) make sure that you copied the superuser.zip file to the EXTERNAL sdcard.
i) Boot the phone up normally
ii) plug the phone into your computer, pull the notification bar down, select USB connection, and tap the "Connect USB storage" button.
iii) Using Winbloze explorer, copy the SuperUser.zip to the external sdCard (on my computer, it is drive F:, and the Internal is drive G.
iv) disconnect once the copy is finished and use any file explorer on your phone to check the contents of the external sdCard (look in the "sdcard/external_sd" folder)
v) if it's not there, then you are doing something wrong. If it is there, shut down the phone, and boot into CWM recovery.
vi) Use CWM recovery to install the superuser.zip file on your phone.
vii) reboot into normal mode
viii) check to make sure that you have enabled USB Debugging
viii) check again to see if SuperUser is now in your apps, and in the system/bin folder.
ix) Run SuperUser 1x, and then close it out.
x) Run ANY app that requires Root Permissions. You should get a request from SuperUser to "Allow" or "Deny" the app root access. Make sure you allow root access. If you make a mistake, you'll need to launch superuser again and completely remove the app from the denied list.
2) Make sure USB Debugging is enabled.
3) if you still can't get root, boot into CWM Recovery, and try clearing the cache and the Dalvik cache, and resetting permissions, then reboot and check everything again. You may need to do this last step several times.
Beyond that, I don't know what else might be causing you to not gain root access, so keep trying.
If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me.

Thanks for the write-up Black-wolf.
I wasn't aware that the touch key fw needed to be updated each time after booting recovery, hopefully that is something that will be fixed when Shabbypenguin gets his hands on the stock recovery.
Personally I find the easiest, works every time method to get into Download mode is to have the usb cable plugged into the pc, then while holding the volume up/down buttons, plug the cable into the phone, continue holding vol up/down buttons until download mode boots.

Yeah, I figured that out when I went to boot recovery to check something, and then came out of it and the keys weren't working again... :/ At least there's a work around. I suspect, that this is something that an automated app could handle if Shabby or someone else doesn't come up with a permanent fix.

Any update on getting the stock recovery? I blew through rooting my Exhilarate before I noticed the request for help or I would have offered.
The root seems to be working OK for me. JuiceDefender is working great with it to throttle the CPU clock speeds and has really improved my battery life. Also worked OK in blocking all the bloatware apps with the Gemini App Manager. So I don't really have a reason to unroot and go back to stock firmware, but it would be nice to have the option available should I ever hit a problem.
Thanks for all you guys hard work!

To get into stock recovery you...
1. open a command terminal on your computer.
2. type cd (where ever you have your ADB located on your computer) for example my is located in desktop/platform-tools so the command would be "cd desktop/platform-tools"
3. type "adb"
4. type "adb reboot recovery"
Presto you are in stock recovery.

I'm not exactly sure but it might be just as simple as replacing the audio libs on the blaze rom with the ones from the exhilarate. I'm not sure which files though.
I'm curious if by coming together (blaze and exhilarate users) if there would be enough interest to get official cm support. if the only major diff is audio they could basically support 2 devices for the price of one.

If i knew/or had the kno how, shoot id do it. Is there a program u need to change the libs?. This is a pretty sweet device.
i think you just need root explorer, and copy the new ones over the old ones. I'll look to see if i can find out which files need swapped. Should be able to make a zip to flash through CWM recovery.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have anything to do with the audio lib files. More so most likely a kernel, modem, or APN problem.
Edit: not to mention the build.prop is completely written for the blaze. I'm working on some things. I'll let you guys know tonight. I wish there was source for this damn phone.

I'm using a TMOUS One S S4 vers and I've rooted and flashed the TWRP recovery. I want to use my stock ROM or one as close as possible to stock and unlock the APN settings so I can get wifi tethering to work. I'm currently on the UnKnown ROM, as it is pretty much stock, but the APN's are still locked. I tried the following tool from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33747241
But it still didn't work for me. Is there another way to get the apns unlocked besides a custom ROM?
If you are using the mod I made would have to use the manual method of installing it into system.
The flash didn't work I am having trouble getting a flashable zip of it.
But if you use TWRP recovery file manager to copy it over with the instructions and then factory data reset (thats important so the system reads the settings again) and then setup the phone it does work on the 2.35 tmous stock rom.

Thanx for the reply. So I'm assuming you're talking about method #2 in that link. It would be great to use with the stock TMOUS ROM, but I'm having some issues implementing it.
1) Is there a tutorial on how to do the manual method? When I go into TWRP file manager, I see the "system" folder, but there is no "framework" folder there. Also, I'm vaguely familiar with chmod commands. I get lost at "chmod to 644." I know a few fastboot commands to get a recovery flashed from a directory but that's about it.
2) I have issues getting into recovery consistently. This may be a completely different issue but, the instructions I saw said to flash the ROM and then reboot recovery. Then flash the mod to fix the wifi. When I try to reboot recovery, my phone usually starts booting the ROM for the first time. I have to hold down the power button for 14 sec to shut it down and try to get to recovery again. It takes a few times for me to get there. I don't know if this causes problems with the fix being able to work because the ROM is starting to read on 1st boot?
Thanx again for the reply and I'd appreciate if you could shed some light on the manual method.
Nevermind. I figured it out once I played around with TWRP. Very nice recovery and great mod. Everything is working correctly now on the stock ROM. Thanx again
FYI for others: Once you copy the "framework-res.apk" file to your storage card,
1) You have to go into TWRP, mount,
2) Mount the SD card and system by putting checks next to them
3) Goto home screen in TWRP and goto advanced
4) Select file system and navigate to SD Card and find the "framework-res.apk" file where you saved it
5) Select the file and then select "move"
6) Now navigate back by pressing the "up one level" at the top of each list until you get to root.
7) Now find the "system" folder and then the "framework" folder.
8) Select....... can't remember, but there's and option to move it there. It will confirm.
9) Select the file "framework-res.apk" in the directory you just pasted it to and select chmod
10) Type in 644 and select done.
11) Go back to the home screen and select "wipe" and "factory reset"
12) Now reboot system. Done.
APN's are no longer locked.

But it still didn't work for me. Is there another way to get the apns unlocked besides a custom ROM?

I'm was using the UnKnown ROM bit I've switched back to my stock ROM so no issues with data. and signal. The mod worked with the stock ROM so I suck with that. You can find it in the link above.

Can you please tell me what framework I am on? Is that the same thing as hboot. I am currently on 1.06 and I see 3.16 under hardware information. Is that compatible with your mod?
