Which phone??? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hey my upgrade deal is coming up from T-Mobile and my question is, is the extra price worth it for an HTC one s vs the gs2? I've looked at reviews and stuff but I need some xda insight. I'm leaning towards the one s but the damn price difference is where the decision lies.

Why ask here man? I see no point asking here, instead, just consider yourself lol...if u have enough money, then just go to those OneS or GLXS2 forum to see which has the most roms and kernels and stuffs so that u won't have to wait or ask for ETA or discuss bout aries and trolling blah blah lmfao...

I've stopped trolling and I don't think the gs4g phone is worth it anymore. I'm happy that devs are still working on it but I think I need to move on instead of begging for a new update. I've almost forgotten there are other options out there.

I don't know if it's still like this but my first android phone was a mytouch 3g slide. HTC made it and that phone was the biggest pain in the butt to get rooted due to the locked boot loader. I got the s2 and have been very happy with it.

The HTC one s has been majorly upgraded it runs ics and sense 4 ( sense 4 is infinitely better than touchwiz if for no other reason the fact that touchwiz5 can be flashed as a zip onto the one s) with no worries to the one s out of the box so you get best of both worlds) has an awesome 4.3 in 900 by 560 screen res but easily a one handed device due to the thin design. Has an amazing camera a great dual core 1.5 MHz thingy ma bob (not the most tech specific term) and i could definately see the smoothness was comparable to the one x's and the gs3 but it has no expandable memory or access to battery. Oh and a HUUUUGGGE plus is that the one s has an alpha cm10 build already. So pretty much the s one is better than the s2 in every thing except for storage, price, and nfc. Seems like a no brainer right! Its just that with a 2 yr contract the one s is $150 vs the gs2's wapping 0 dollars. I could wait for the price to drop but it was at 50$ back in April when I couldn't upgrade so I doubt the price will drop that much. I feel like this post may have answered by own question lol.

For me the deciding factor would be the development community. Which one is strong and friendly.

SGS III by far.
The best phone humanity has today, with an external micro SD card slot, unique Sammy features and beasty specs.

I would get the galaxy s 2 (or 3 but you didn't mention it). HTC one s has a **** ton of hardware issues that even HTC has admitted

I'd go for HTC One S for the looks.

I'd go for [email protected]!ing fake phones from China so that i can have a Galaxy S2 look alike phone running sense, an most unstable phone tgat can be die whenever it like and a cheap phone (just 50 usd or so) that dont have to be unlocked for carriers lmfao

Honestly I didn't know what the big deal was when I was on this forum before I got this phone with jelly bean. And now having used it for a couple weeks I really still don't see the big deal with it. It's nice don't get me wrong but it's not leaps and bounds better than ics like gb was to ics.
All in all I'm happy with the phone. Dual core is awesome, the gig of ram also helps allot. love the bigger screen. And with the 16g internal and the 16g sd card I had from my sgs4g I don't think I will be worrying about storage problems for awhile lol

Need help on major decision.

K I know you guys are all smart ppl can someone. I just got the Skyrocket yesterday but having some regret I think I'm going to go to the nexus on rogers but is it worth it?
Sent from my SGH-I727R using xda premium
The skyrocket has better specs and is lte capable. I think its far better plus ics is right around the corner. I had the skyrocketed from rogers as well sold it last week but its a amazing phone
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Nexus is has old cpu and specs wise Rocket is best. Once we get ics our phone will be best in market.
Definitely keep the skyrocket. I think the nexus may have been a little overrated.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
I think our opinions in this forum are a little biased, but that's because most of us LOVE our Skyrockets.
Definitely keep it. Skyrocket has a better processor and a better camera, if you need a couple of reasons...
The only thing I like more about the Nexus is the 720 screen. But for that, you can probably wait for the S3 or the S2 LTE HD (aka Skyrocket HD).
What parts are making you regret it?
The only thing that I don't like about the Skyrocket is the HDPI screen. It wouldn't normally bother me, but coming from an Evo 3D with QHD, it just seems kind of blurry. Other than that, this phone is absolutely amazing.
Thanks for the responses. Definitely clears up. SKYROCKET definitely has better hardware. But on Monday when the note comes out I'll make my decision....depends on the size of that thing.

Honestly I was drawn back by the design cause I came from infuse 4g which in my opinion has a more premium look. Lol...
Sent from my SGH-I727R using xda premium
I hear you about the screen its my one drawback as well. outside of that, this phone has been great thus far. Sucked to here the HD is going hit canada, but not until q2 which by then, more quad core devices are going to be on their way so its not as big of a deal.
I love my skyrocket. Its been the best phone to date I have had. infuse was ok but felt cheaper to me... have a white note coming next week. and cant wait. cause to me its like a bigger skyrocket.. with a few little extras.. but will keep my skyrocket on my spare line. etc..
Funny thing is.. on the skyrocket the stock rom has been so good havent felt the need to install another etc.. unlike say the inspire or infuse or atrix. or the 10 million other androids I have had in the past. etc..
I find it funny that people on the skyrocket forums are not as anal as people in infuse.
Sent from my SGH-I727R using xda premium
Had the Skyrocket. It was good but since I didn't have LTE here it was pointless to keep. Galaxy Nexus is by far better in performance but since it doesn't have LTE skyrocket is faster IMHO

From a galaxy better than yours.
The design does have its downsides, though. There will no longer be user-replaceable batteries, nor any slot for micro SD expansion. Due to space constraints, these phones will also only be able to use Micro SIM cards.

gosh no....that's a complete waste of even producing a phone...the specs on it alone make me laugh when my htc g2 would still out-preform the htc one...to jump ship from the galaxy s2 to that...what can i say but happy disappointment, just like the nexus...my two cents
The amaze drove me from ever using htc again. Htc unlock is hella bogus, if you like control over what you buy than htc has pretty much alienated all its loyal customers. With sammy from now on, or until they piss me off again

HTC one s would be a down grade...now if was the one X....that woulda been worth looking at

htc last best release was probably the mt4g.
I have practically played with every other t-mobile released htc phones and I have to say they're all disappointing besides the amaze's camera.
So I would wait for more feedbacks and wait for a htc phone that stands out more than its detailed specs.

The htc One x won't be having the quad core processor due to the fact that it doesn't support LTE. They will be getting an one x but with dual core.
Happily waiting for the SG3. so no
HTC one s has a better processor snapdragon s4 crushes tegra3. Stay away from tegra products. But the lack of expandable storage. Also non removable battery kills that phone cloud storage doesn't make up for expandable storage. Especially if it isn't permanent storage.

Im not gonna lie. The One X looks nice. They actually made it look good for once. Now, when it comes to waste of money, No. I'll be patiently waiting for the Galaxy S III. Its quad core, 1080p resolution. Samsung is just better anyways.
Maybe HTC one XE?
I'm getting the international version of the One X (one with Tegra 3). I've already pre ordered it from Expansys.... I'm not on AT&T and I could give a crap about their limited LTE. The One S isn't worth it in my opinion and I have T-Mobile...

Yep. I agree that was probably uncalled for. Sorry to thekid1. A better answer may be to wait until the new Samsung is released and for the old model to drop in price. Thekid1 has asked about things before that are easy to research.
I would never ask an internet forum how I should spend my hard earned money, but that is me. I wish all my clients would ask me to how to spend their money.
Like someone said before if you want to get updates get a Nexus and don't waste your money on any other android phone. I'm done with non Nexus devices I'm tired of the lack of suppose all the manufactures have for phones. You won't get much suppose from Samsung been there with the Vibrant they will release a very slightly revised S3 3 months later and forget you exist. No thanks.

Just get the One S. It is insanely fast and is built really well. I love it for a couple key reasons:
1. It has the new snapdragon S4 which is based off the newer smaller A15 architecture rather than the A9 which is in the Gs3 and almost all other phones right now. The A15 is more powerful and uses less energy.
2. It has a smaller 4.2" screen which in my opinion is the biggest a screen should be.
3. Build quality is really good and feels good in my hand.
That is my grain of salt for consideration.

I currently have the sensation. I'm up for an upgrade. I have a choice between the one s and the Samsung galaxy s3 . I hate touch wiz and I feel the dev presence is awesome on HTC. Development on the GS3 will be greater, and faster, since Samsung doesn't lock bootloaders, or lock the phones with S-on.
Now ask yourself; did I really just read that? Yes you did.

I would go with the S3. It has a bigger display and its hd compared to qHD. Plus it has a micro sd which is incredibly useful since the one S barely has a lil under 10GB of storage.
Sent from my HTC One S using xda premium
If it weren't for the size of the GS3, I would say absolutely go with it, since really the only thing the One S has over the Galaxy is its a reasonable size...and sexy slim. Other than that, the GS 3 either matches or trumps the H1S in every other category.

I got this phone free w/ 2 year contract. Its a great upgrade for me. But if I were choosing a phone that money didn't play a part in it, I would get something else.
Get a phone w/ a removable battery and micro SD card.
Sure I'm happy now, but cell phone batteries only last 400 - 500 charges. No way around that. Good class 10 SD cards keep getting cheaper.
I will be sorry after a year or so with this phone. But I'm happy now.

Where to next?

I don't have an upgrade yet, but as the date draws nearer (December) I really start looking at what is coming out between now and then, and I must say I'm not feeling particularly confident about any given upgrade path.
If it's true the next Nexus will be Nexus Optimus based off the Optimus G I'd probably consider the Optimus G since having identical hardware to the galaxy S worked many wonders for the captivate.
Outside of that, the Xperia Tl looks like a pretty great device if it gets enough support to see decent long-lived dev support.
So, what upcoming phone do you think will have the best dev support? I would really like to keep getting updates long after the manufacturer officially drops support.. and Even if it's only 400$, I probably will skip the nexus since 16 gigs isn't enough without expandable memory storage..
Same. I also have an upgrade due this December and the new phones on at&t aren't interesting. I would've gone to the one x but their at&t version has ran into a wall because of a recent update that locked the boot loaders down, hard. (At&t officially does not support unlocked boot loaders for it). So, the Cappy is still moving forward

I'm cautiously optimistic about both the Xperia TL and the Optimus G.
I know that back mfr support can ruin otherwise great phones.. both in terms of upgrades and devs ability to make custom roms.. So I'll be looking anxiously at the LG Optimus. If the One x+ keeps the 64 gb of storage or even just 32gb of storage I would seriously consider it too assuming the dev support was adequate.

I am really worried the Note 2 will be far to big for my taste. The 4.7" phones already seem *huge* to have to stick in my pocket. Aside from that I'd be worried about the quad core exynos processsors which I hear make it hard to cook up custom Roms.

LG Optimus G looks very promising. I love its hardware design (on the same level with HTC one x or better, IMO), that quadcore Qualcomm s4 processor, and the screen is fantastic. I wish At&t included the 13 mp camera. But then again all cellphone cameras will never be perfect.

Sweet, I might consider that too. I'm not feeling the galaxy s3 for at&t at all and HTC one x is stuck on a rut with that 2.20 update.

I want a decent camera but, honestly my absolute biggest concern is long term dev support. I wish there was an environment more "open" to dev with carriers. I understand they don't want to have to deal with people bricking their phones.. At the same time "voided warranty" scares off most people I talk to about custom roms in the first place.. So I don't think they are really gaining anything by locking down phones.. People either care about the warranty or they don't.

Well I'm guessing it's because carriers want you to buy a new phone for every upgrade date to make $$$ so they lock boot loaders (of course, that assumption could be false). For long term development support I will buy an international Samsung galaxy s_ device or a nexus.

Unfortunately, I'm kinda tired of the SAMOLED displays.
As far as why they do it, forcing customers to buy new phones is a pretty horrible reason TBH.
There are far too many people who are angry at manufacturers for failing to update fast enough. When you remove their ability to install their own update, you're just giving them a reason to find another product.

Me too, which is why I'm going to the One X or Nexus 4. I have a Nexus 7 and support is good. But I don't think any phone out there will be better than my captivate, development wise.

Haha, yup that's a good point. I'm glad that the cappy was my first android device and is/was filled with plenty of developers to support it. I'm kind of sad to leave it this December, TBH.
What do you think of the SGS3?

I left my Cappy last October after the USB port died and I got tired of switching out batteries to use it for the SGS II. My SGS II just had an unfortunate accident involving water, so I pulled out my trusty Cappy which I could not part with since it was my 1st Android device. Thank god for all of the awesome development that has and continues to unfold for this device. I am on Jelly Bean 4.1.2 and its like I never left. I do not know how much longer I am going to use it (Nexus 4 looks tempting), but it continues to be an amazing phone that I will continue to go back to whenever other phones fail on me.
Kind of off topic but I really wanted to say how much of an awesome phone this is. Props to all of you who kept it for a full two years! :good:

I like my galaxy s3 alot

Nexus 4 price is hard to resist, lack of storage and lte is unfortunate but can't beat 350 for a top of the line device. And it's a nexus.
I'd consider the nexus 4 if I didn't have the nexus 7 already
Might as well go with the school of fish since the galaxy s 3 is $99 now at select stores. Cant beat that price with all the features it has. But you gotta admit the HTC one x is a nice looking phone, and dare I say, and to which nobody has mentioned yet, the Lumia 920 (in red) *gasp*

One thing im wondering as I look at the nexus 4 is that there are 3 buttons back, home and multi task (which is long press home for us) one of the things i love is the dedicated options or settings key, anyone have any experience moving to no options button? One (of many) things that bother me when im using an iPhone is the stupid steps you have to take to change app settings.
I'm reconsidering this phone for that reason,(although im sure XDA can give me options to remedy this issue) am i the only one who thinks a dedicated multitasking button is a waste and long press home is a fine alternative to open up another shortcut option?

+1 here. Maybe a custom ROM for the Nexus will give you the ability to do that.

Getting a Nexus is your only safe bet for long term dev support and you don't have to deal with locked bootloader and losing your warranty by unlocking it (you have no choice with Sony and HTC, because you enter your IMEI to unlock it which void your warranty, unless you do some third party unlocking method). Also for the price of the Nexus 4 and being a Nexus device, I don't see why one would get the Optimus G with locked bootloader and probably poor support, if only for the 32gb storage which is not worth it compared to all the things the Nexus offer (ie, Google updates, easy to flash, best dev support and highesst quality rom, pentaband, elitist Nexus fanboys community).

Various CyanogenMod and AOKP-based rom is capable of customizing the on screen NavBar, including for the Captivate. Try AOKP rom and look for the Navigation bar settings.

Custom ROMs allow you to change all sorts of things about the navigation bar. You can have more buttons, different buttons, even shortcuts/widgets.
Also, I can say from experience that the three button setup is better than the four button setup.
