[Q] Maps shows up as my #1 battery eater - Asus Transformer TF700

When I look at my battery stats at the end of the day, Maps is ALWAYS in 1st place for eating my battery. It shows that it consumes about 30-40% of my battery. Now for the weird part... I haven't run maps during that cycle at all. I have tried cold booting and leaving maps alone. I have tried killing the maps application. It doesn't seem to have an effect.
I am assuming this is an error and that Maps isn't eating my battery. Does anyone have any insight here?
I am rooted, lock bootloader, stock ROM.

I'm pretty sure the stock battery stats aren't very accurate. You could also bloatware freeze maps.

I've noticed lately that I've had to kill GPS a few times.
Don't know if it's Maps, something else Google or Weather Bug.
Check for the GPS icon lower right corner (1st icon) to see if it's attempting to get a fix.

I noticed the same thing and started turning wifi off while not in use. Once it was off, Maps no longer showed up as being the greatest battery hog (usually doesn't even make it onto the list now). Though this is annoying that I have to remember to turn wifi off, it seems to resolve the drain.
The only question is, is this due to Maps pinging the wifi to get the current location (I don't need my location while the device is off, they should offer a setting to turn that off)? OR, is it some issue with the battery stats and Maps is just a false positive?
EDIT: I should note that I do not have latitude turned on (so it would need to be a setting other than that to turn off whatever other wifi processing it is doing).

I see the same thing. At first, I just turned off the wifi, and it didn't show up as using the battery, now I just ignore it. It doesn't actually seem to actually be using that much of the battery.

i am also facing the same problem. am i thinking should i just freeze it and see how it behave ?

Turn off location settings
I had the same problem too, which I resolved by going into Maps->Settings->Location Settings and then un-ticking everything that was ticked. Maps then no longer needs to stay awake and log your location everywhere you go. The app now only shows up on the battery list when I've actually been using it.

Android System keeping the Xoom awake?

I noticed this recently so I'm guessing it might be related to an app but now my Android System keeps the Xoom awake always even with the screen off. Anybody else with the same problem? If so what apps do you have installed? Maybe we can find the common one amongst us that is causing this. Luckily the battery is so good that this isn't a huge issue but I want to fix it.

Having the same issue. Wifi only model, I had wifi off for my 1hr commute to work, and it was awake the entire time.

It's definitely an app or something because I know in the past it hasn't done that at all. Can you list what apps you're using? Or if yours is new enough maybe do a factory reset and see if that fixes the problem?
Either way it's definitely software not hardware.
P.S. I have a Verizon XOOM.
What do you guys mean by the xoom staying awake? the screen not turning off or the android system not going into a sleep/standby mode.

If you go into Settings -> About -> Battery and you click on Android System it will say how long it's been awake. Mine currently has an awake time that equals the total time the Xoom is off the battery - i.e. it never is not awake. The screen turns off fine and the battery usage is low but not as low as if the Xoom was sleeping. When it's sleeping it goes into a lower power state but since Android System is keeping the XOOM awake it can't do that. Other than reduced battery there is no other problem with it though.
Under "Included Packages" for Android System in battery usage the following is listed:
PGM System
Settings
Google Backup Transport
Android System
Settings Storage
System UI
Motorola Location Proxy Service
In the main battery usage list nothing is above 3% usage. 5h 31m on, awake for 5h 11m.
Screebl Pro!
I am long time fan and user of "Screebl Pro" By Key Labs. It takes into account the screens orientation and keeps your device (Tablet or Smartphone) backlit. Its great.
I did a factory reset. The problem seems to be about 99% better. There is still awake time under Android System, but it's verrrrry minimal and not even close to the amount of time the display or system has been on. Leaving the Xoom idle for a while to check once again.
I was sort of dreading that. Please check often after you install apps so we can see if there's a particular app that's causing that.

No apps are over 1-2% after being on for 4 hours. 4 min of awake time under Android System. Looks like the issue is solved.
It turned out being Weatherbug. I uninstslled and reinstalled and I'm back to being able to sleep.

After much testing it turned out to actually be having more than one CNN stack on my homescreen. Don't ask me why this causes this problem but it does. Weatherbug seems to be ok. I hope we get Android updates soon to address these bugs.

It's resolved, but not really solved. If anyone notices an underlying application or setting causing this, please be a dear and update this thread?
I just noticed this today. 100% wake time even with long stretches of the screen off. Happened before installing weathebug. I do have 1 CNN stack on my home screen gonna remove it and test.
Very perplexing. You will see much better battery life if the system actually sleeps lol.
Edit: Yep looks like it was the CNN widget. Took it off the home screen and the Xoom started sleeping. Weird.
I FOUND IT! Listen up folks there is a bug in the latest CNN app that was released recently.
When you have 1 or more CNN widgets and you click on a story VIA the widget it launches a service called BangoAnalyticsService or something and THIS is keeping the XOOM awake. Very easy to test, if you go into Applications -> Running Services -> CNN and terminate just the Bango service you will see the XOOM sleep immediately.
Good news is that you can launch stories using the CNN app (NOT the widget) and it will not launch this service so XOOM will sleep.
I've already reported this issue but PLEASE can you all do the same.
Here is how.
1. Make sure you have latest CNN app
2. Have at least 1 widget on your homescreen
3. Launch a story from the widget
4. Go back to home
5. Go to Settings->Applications->Running Services
6. Click on CNN (1 process, 2 services)
7. Click on BangoAnalytics or whatever it is and click on "REPORT"
Put a nasty comment in there for good measure too!!
Glad at least I know what it is. More people that complain, the quicker it will be fixed.
Workaround: Logout of CNN app if you're logged in. Now it appears you can use the CNN app (not the widget) and it will not launch the Bango service that is the culprit. Let me know if you see other issues.
Is there any concern in "Tablet idle" being at like 3%?
Accuweather Bug
I can confirm that the application Accuweather was keeping my wifi xoom awake. Please note that I checked the in app settings for a run in background or update interval setting which it did not have. Once I uninstalled the problem ressolved.

Thank you! CNN widget was the culprit for me as well.
Device keeps to be ON and Heats up really bad and drains battery
Mine Xoom after the ICS 4.0 keeps running Android OS @ 90% use and keeps screen on and drains battery within 2 hours.
After hard reset, it seem to be disappeared, but once I've installed some app updates and minimum apps that I had to use, same thing happening.
So far after removing the DrawEverything app, it works better but have to test it and see further.
It is weird, and seem to me some sort of the memory leak causing device to enter into this state.
I will call Motorola and see if I could get any additional information.
Thank you for everyone posting an updates here.

Google Maps draining battery???

Since the new Google maps update, seems like it is number one on my Battery usage list.
47% as my tablet lasted a 1d11h12m of just simply sitting on my desk.
There are numerous threads on this forum about this but before someone says turn Latitude off.....it doesnt seem too help.
Wifi is turned off when screen turns off as well.
I'm trying too see how long i can get this tablet to last without being used but Google maps is not helping the issue lol
Any ideas??

Thank you for this thread, as I was just about to start one of my own. I think we are on exactly the same page because I too wanted to test how long the battery lasts without using the tablet and leaving it in standy mode with the WiFi turning off, but Google Maps is eating through my battery like no other.
Basically, I'm running some tests now. I had massive battery drain overnight while I slept. The tablet would go from 90% down to 50% in an 10 hour period (4%/hr). It didn't matter if it was docked or not docked. I was running Google Maps v5.8.0 and saw some people post that the new version is eating up the battery. So I removed the updates for Google Maps and tried again.
Now I'm running v5.6.1 of Google Maps and the battery went from 100% to 42% in a 17 hour period with absolutely no use (3.5%/hr). I checked battery usage, and Google Maps is at the top and it's taking up 41% of what was used. That's ridiculous.
So now I'm going to install the latest Google Maps and see if this helps at all. I've also attached some screen shots of my latest tests.
Other details:
Wi-Fi is set to sleep when the screen turns off.
MobileDock Battery saving mode is checked.
Use location for Google Search is unchecked.
+1 over here... very very strange... normally when latitude connected it would make i LITTLE bit of sense, but it is off...

I did another test last night after having updated Google Maps to v5.9.0 (latest). I got the same results. Google Maps is eating through my battery when the tablet should be sleeping.
Here's the results:
The tablet was undocked, and fully charged.
I didn't touch the tablet for 15 hours.
The battery went from 100% to 55% in 15 hours = 3%/hr drain.
Google Maps was largest user of battery at 75%!!
I also did a reboot after I updated Google Maps to v5.9.0.
WTH is going on here?! Anyone have any ideas??
Power consumption
I have no issues with the maps application using power.
Last 2 days, maps have only used about 4% and I've used it on and off, doesn't seem too excessive although a bit much given the usage-time..
It does say that CPU usage is 38min and "kept active" is 1 hour 17min, and only 2min of GPS usage..
Doesn't really match my usage at all but power drain is not bad considering you guys.
To set it in perspective, Navigon has used 8% and I've used that for 5-6 trips of 26km. (keeps crashing randomly, so be sure to be able to activate it again.)
Are you using any apps, that might use the maps app ?

Also, I turned off Latitude as best I could last night and still same result. Google Maps is chewing up my battery like no other: from 100% to 52% in 15 hours with zero usage by me. Anyone have any other ideas? Any other apps that might be causing this?
I forget exactly where it is, but there is a setting that mentions improve location accuracy.... If that is checkrd the gps/and or wifi will often start and use up a lot of power.
Traffic widgets?
Does anyone else suffering from this problem have any traffic widgets on their homescreen(s)? I had several, and they show as being in sleep mode (zzz), but I'm having the serious drain problem that others are having.
I haven't had enough time to test this theory, but I've deleted the widgets and killed Maps, and my battery life has been much better over the past 24 hours.
Another question: when people say they're "turning off" Latitude - are you actually signing out of Latitude, or are you simply turning off the Latitude layer?

When I say "turning off" Latitude, initially I've unchecked all the notifications for Latitude, and turned off the layer for Latitude. Stupid me, I forgot to sign out of Latitude. So, tonight I will be testing again with having completely turned off AND signed out of Latitude...
Also, I don't have any widgets on-screen that are showing Maps or Latitude or anything else. Here's the widgets I do have:
Market
Mizuu Movie Lite
Asus Weather Widget
Asus Date Widget
Picture Frame
TF Battery Widget
Google+
Mizuu Calendar
Google Music

Google Maps battery drain Solved!
For me, I figured out the issue was Latitude.
I was getting bad battery drain overnight and Google Maps was the largest user by far. I finally signed out of Latitude completely. Battery drain dropped to around 2% overnight! This is acceptable!
As it turns out, Latitude wakes up my device while it should be sleeping in order to update my location and therefore draining massive battery overnight. I'm going to post this as a bug with Latitude/Google Maps because this is causing waaaay too much battery drain.
So it looks like I won't be able to leave Latitude signed in. Once I'm done using it, I will have to sign out of Latitude. This way I can leave Wi-Fi on and set to turn off when the screen turns off. Thereby I get really good battery life again.
On a side note, my phone has the same behaviour, but I never noticed it because I'm usually charging my phone at night. So Latitude...basically...sucks (battery).

Advanced Task Killer

Does Advanced Task Killer drain my battery even if I'm not using autokill or killing any tasks at all? Like if I just leave it there, will it still drain.
And one important question as well, if a AOL's notification icon appears in the status bar, but I don't see it on the running services list, is the app still running in the background?
Does anyone have bad battery by using WidgetLocker or Weatherbug? I can't tell what is usingy battery

ok first, throw out ATK. the only reason you should use it is to kill a rogue app that has a bad memory leak, or is stuck in a race condition. and you can do this through the settings in any rom, so there is no need for an app.
Second, do you use an AOL app? if so then if it has an icon on the status bar then yes it is running and it has the ability to drain your battery. if its not showing up in the running services, then its not really running. its a neat trick where the app puts a notification in the bar then closes. and when you click it it reopens to where it was.
As for widgetlocker, i used it for a long time and if its setup right it shouldnt drain battery. it all depends on the widgets you have on both your lockscreen and your homescreen. widgets that use alot of battery will do so, while well written ones will not.
anyway, before i get too far off track. if you think a certian app is sucking your battery dry, use an application to freeze it, or just uninstall it and run the phone for a full charge cycle to see if it improves or stays the same. if it gets better, and you used the phone the same way, than that app is the culprit.

i couldnt tell you if it does or not, but if it does not have a service or process running then its not hurting anything.
as for monitoring cpu or battery drain. i use a program called "System Tuner Pro" it costs money, but it tells you what apps are using how much cpu time in seconds. Any app like that will help, but its not a perfect system, it just helps point you in the right direction.
Last Note, the developer of "System Tuner Pro" is a good friend of mine, so i might be bias in using it

There is a reason Maps is always running. When an app wants to get location data, it can call on GPS. GPS will return the distance from 3 (or more) satellites, various times, and latitude and longitude. This information is useless to the majority of apps that use it, so they will have to convert it to something useful (like nearby address or a city name).
Now, Google knew this, and instead of making each app that needs a city or address figure it out on its own (which would most likely be a slow, resource hungry process) Google made its Maps program open source. So now these apps can just make a call to the always running maps process and it returns an address, city name, nearby supermarkets, ect...
This app is also responsible for your phone being able to get a rough position without having GPS turned on, it gets WIFI data, Cell tower names, and various other things to figure out roughly where you are in the world. This lets apps like WeatherBug to get your city without ever using GPS.
So thats why its always running, and there is no need to try and kill it ever. Maps is a very well written program, and your better off just letting it do its thing. (if you try to fight it, it's probably going to win )
I do believe I have an answer to this. I found today that, after I finally sat down and finished rooting and flashing and installing and rebooting and updating and all the rest of the happy stuff that equals a much happier user, that ATK did infact drain my battery in an exponencial amount. Prior to that, it was ok. After running CM7, in about 2 hours it drained my battery almost to dead. Now, i work in radio shack, so I've had my phone on the charger and my battery was still dying. So in all haste, remove ATK!!!

The only time I really use maps is for gps. I use gps, maps turns on and then when I turn gps off, maps doesnt run in the background anymore. That's the only reason why im keeping system tuner I have no other need for location service.

Google Search DESTROYING my Battery.

Today something odd happened, all of a sudden Google Search has become a huge battery hog! I really can't imagine why. I was working for 15 hours today, and it rarely got used. I have about 2.5 Hours of screen-on time over 14.5 hours, which used 33% of my battery(or is it 33% of battery used? I have never been sure). In that time, Google Search used a whopping 25%! How can Google Search use almost as much juice as 2.5 hours of screen time? Surely there is something going on but I don't know how to track it down. I even turned both Location and GPS off most of the day after noticing this. Can anyone help? I have attached a couple of screenshots that might help people who know more than me.

The issue with this draining your battery is that you have location turned off, if you turn it on and leave it on you will not get the battery drain. With it off Google search is constantly looking for the location and cannot find it which is what is draining your battery. Had this issue and once I turned on location and left it on, no more drain. Hope this helps!

You can also just force stop it once you notice it.
it's the crap location functionality of google now, it wake up your phone to get your GPS position at every 5min, then use this location history to show google now cards.
Just go to "apps > google settings > location > google location reporting" and disable both options, this will stop tracking your position and will save a huge battery. If you don't use google now, disable it too to save even more battery

Something is killing my battery - please advice

since a few weeks it's the same sh*t with every Omni-Nightly and franco.Kernel.
Everything is working fine for 1-2 day.
But then the cpu usage increases (i don't see any reason) and won't go back to idle again.
I tried several cpu monitor apps but none is showing me which app is causing this issue.
Please help.
And please don't blame facebook.
My cpu behaves the same way even no facebook app is installed.
If you need further information please tell me.
Thanks a lot for your help!
go to the main phone settings, location, now press google location reporting.. turn off location reporting and location history. your location will still work without these. no go back to the location option, and turn the mode to battery saving.

i've got this issue since 1 or 2 weeks.
i can say for sure that it's not any location services fault.

i see google play services showed up on your battery stats. normally, you wont even see it there, but you are at 71% and so far its taking 6%. its not the location services per se, they work fine with those options disabled. but it is a well known battery drainer.

you're right that those services are draining the battery, but in an acceptable way.
when i don't have the isse with the increased cpu usage i've 4-5 hours sot @ 12 hours overall uptime.
so i guess in general everything is working fine on my device.
but i don't know what and why is causing the high cpu usage :crying:
I'm no good at understanding BBS stats, but what is daemonsu?
There seems to be something keeping your phone awake and attributing its drain to "Android OS" which could be many things, including Widgets.

I could help, but prefer gsam screenshots. Unfamiliar with BBS.
Also, for starters....and please trust me here...just turn location services completely off for one charge cycle and see what happens. Also, Google settings app....go into android device manager and uncheck both options.
See how your full charge goes like that. If its still bad...its an app doing the damage, or a very weak signal.
Try it, and it will narrow down the problem. ?

Option 1. go back to 100% stock Rom see if it behaves the same
option 2. hard reset your phone and check battery usage with no apps installed
option 3. put your phone on airplane mode and see if battery still drains the same way using wifi. Usually if I have bad reception my battery will drain like crazy. My personal experience using my Nexus 5 I can't tell how much my battery is going to last day by day sometimes I get over 12hrs other days I'm lucky if I get 8hrs.
