Creaking of the "Casing" - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else having any issues with the outer edges of the tablet when pressed giving a creaking sounds. Its not bad enough for a return for when i receive my book cover i wont really care anymore. I just want to see if Im the only one and maybe I should take it back for another

Why are you pressing the outer corners of your tablet?
Mine does not creak, however it does sigh seductively.

Yes, mine creaks if I press under the speakers... Both sides. It's annoying but I'm still keeping it!

The second I had mine out of the box I checked for this plastic creaking issue all the reviewers were talking about. Aside from a single creak, that was more of a popping noise like the back plate being snapped into position, I've had no problems since.

I just read a funny review. They basically said:
"Other than the s-pen, there is little new in the Galaxy Note 10.1 to recommend it over the competition..."
Lol, that's like saying, "Other than it's fine-tuned racing engine, there is little new in a Porsche 911 to recommend it over a Volkswagen Jetta."
The PEN is the friggin point! The REASON the SGN10.1 doesn't have an HD screen is BECAUSE of the pen. The processor simply is not powerful enough to use a pen on an HD screen.
These reviewers are so dumb.
So, just like the original Note, all the reviewers HATE it and all the users LOVE it.

LOL. +1

I mean think about it. These same reviewers think we should be perfectly happy sitting in a business meeting taking notes with our finger. They say using a stylus doesn't "look cool", but finger painting does?
No shortage of dumb out there.

Are You sure ? Isn´t the WACOM digitizer seperate from the screen ? Or is it because the Digitizer Input then has to be translated into a Full HD line/drawing that might exceed the limits of the Exynos.
Sorry for beeing picky but I would really like to know if I understood how this marvellous piece of art works ........

The device not being fullHD has nothing to do with the pen. It has to do with the fact that there is not a mobile GPU in existence currently that can drive a full HD screen without severe compromises to the rest of the system.
New iPad - copypasta of the GPU cores to get the fillrate up required making the battery about 50% larger. This translates to a heavier device and 50% longer recharge time (recharge rate was not improved to compensate for the increased power consumption and battery capacity).
Transformer Infinity - The GPU is just not powerful enough to push all of those pixels. End result is lots of complaints about poor UI performance.
FullHD won't be truly practical until the next generation of mobile GPUs which achieve improved performance without increased power consumption.
No creaks here. There is some flex to the backplate, but I consider this a good thing - Which of the three options below would YOU choose?
Back flexes to absorb impacts
Back is stiff but cracks on impact because it didn't flex
Back is stiff and transfers shocks to your screen, which breaks instead of the back flexing a little
I know I choose option 1

By disagreeing with me you prove my point.
The mobile processor in the SGN10.1 at this price point simply does not have the power to drive pen input on an HD screen. Hence, no HD screen. If the Infinity lags with no pen, how badly would an HD SGN10.1 lag with a pen? Do you think Samsung would try selling the Note with a 1280 x 800 screen and NO pen for $500? No one would buy it. Clearly, the problem here is the pen and HD input and processing power. You want pen + HD it's gonna cost you twice as much.
The proof of this is that the upcoming Surface Pro with a full intel chip is the only device recommended for full use of their new pen device with an HD screen. But that will cost $900 - $1000 and weigh 2 lbs.
No, the current hardware configuration on the SGN10.1 is the ONLY configuration which makes sense at this price. To me it represents brilliant balance.

No creaks here, my first(faulty speaker) was creaking.

Unfortunately all the specwhores care about is "MOAR PIXELS HURR DURR."
Mine creaks a little but not really during normal use. Sure you can squeeze it and flex it, but what normal function requires doing that? Just looking for a problem where there isn't one.

Not any more at all. If anything, slightly less due to the presence of a more powerful GPU (The Mali 400 in the Exynos 4412 is a bit beefier than the GPU in the Tegra 3.)
You seem to be under the false impression that the pen does something to increase CPU/GPU requirements of a device. It does not - All of the processing related to pen input is done by dedicated Wacom hardware. By the time you get to the CPU/GPU, it's just another input device which requires negligible processing power to deal with. This is why, for example, the original Note does just fine with the same CPU as the Galaxy S2 - It received a 200 MHz bump due to the higher display resolution and the fact that it was simply possible to do at that point in time (just like I wouldn't be surprised if Note 2 were a 1.5 GHz 4412 instead of 1.4 like in the GS3 and N10.1)
Again, keeping the screen at 1280x800 has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the pen and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that ultrahigh resolution is currently a marketing gimmick that results in an inferior experience in either UI performance (Infinity) or battery performance (iPad weight and recharge time), regardless of whether a pen is present or not. This will continue to be the case until the next generation of mobile GPUs/CPUs that achieves higher performance without higher power consumption requirements.

Tx for the detailed info. Now (l think) l look through...... I'm totally happy with the resolution,it is absolutely crisp and sharp.
This device is incredible and after one week l would not know how to work. BTW: no creaking here.......

Entropy,
I have the greatest of respect for your work and skill with development but I still disagree. The actual function of the pen interacting with the device may not put additional strain on the gpu but changing those high density pixels as the pen writes in real time surely does. You are talking about pen input and i am talking about pen output.
Are you saying changing the colors and textures of double the pixels in the same space in realtime puts no more strain on the processor? Pushing pixels costs resources. Yes the pen input is handled by the digitizer but the result of that input is handled by the CPU/GPU.
Following your premise the new pen with the Surface RT should work as well as it does with the Pro, but it won't. It won't offer palm rejection or nearly the precision. Why not if the pen puts no additional demands on resources?
My position will continue to be that Samsung does not offer a higher density screen with the s-pen because they simply could not using this processor and still offer high performance.
Anyway, doesn't matter. It is what it is. If pen input on an HD screen were possible for $500 someone would be doing it. The fact no one is is telling.

It would lag the same. Pen doesn't strain the CPU or GPU much unless you are talking about recognising hadwriting or drawing with a complicated brush. Pen used as a mouse takes probably the same CPU power as... a mouse. There is almost certainly a dedicated Wacom chip that does most of the work related to the pen (calculating the position mostly).

Ahh . Yeah does make a pllastic squeaking sound...but i dont feel like unrooting to take it back so i shall deal with it! I love it too much

You're not disagreeing with him, he's also saying that the GPU is not powerful enough to drive a screen of that resolution in real time. That's regardless of whether the output is pen output or other 2D/3D graphics output. Sure, it might be more noticeable with a finer resolution pen input than with finger touch input, but it's not specific to the pen itself, it's just a fact of current generation mobile GPUs and high resolution displays.
On topic, mine doesn't creak unless you hold it in awkward ways/push against it while picking it up off the table.

do you like the 10" screen or wish it was smaller

Still looking at the tablets. Part of me wants the biggest screen possible for browsing. But the flip side is the bigger the tablet, the less likely I will be to take it outside the house. How portable is your table and do you wish it was bigger, smaller or is the size just right?
Personally I think 10 inches is just right, I have played with the 7 inch tablets, I think the screen is to small. Anything bigger then 10 wouldn't be portable enough in my opinion, could get bulky too. Maybe if it was 12 and still the same thickness and weight, which will be possible later down the road of course.
For me 10 inches is right in that goldilocks zone. Video looks great at 10, Netflix is awesome.
i had a 7 in Sammy tab and I thought it was the perfect size for holding. The xoom is a little harder to hold in one hand. I guess it all depends on what you prefer to be doing on your device. If your into books and on the go internet emails I'd use 7 inch more. The 10 inch is perfect for movies and spreadsheets documents and big games and such.
i used to think 10" was too big, but then I got a case that didnt suck. My view on 7" is that I may as well just use my phone, which has a 4" and some change screen.
Ditto with the idea of 7 inch tablets for the ebook readers. Personally the 10.1 inch screens are perfect for me. I mean yes, the Xoom is a little heavier than the other Honeycomb tablets, but that's because it was the first of it's kind, but it works for me. I have used a 7 inch tablet before and it was not right for me. 10.1 inch screen sizes are perfect: not too large, but not too small, just right.
The future should bring a tablet with adjustable screen sizes. Lol! That way you wouldn't have to choose one or the other.

Well, I think the Xoom is a bit thicker and heavier (only a bit) because it has more ports and better hardware (cameras, true gps) than some of the others, not so much because it was the first (read older). I have a 7" tegra two tablet and it's really cute, but the Xoom is the one I use, not just daily but constantly.

That's very true indeed. The Xoom is an all out beast no doubt. That's why the newer build of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is thinner and lighter, because they stripped it of more powerful hardware such as the camera for example. The Xoom has a 5MP rear facing camera, meanwhile the Galaxy Tab 10.1 only has a 3MP rear facing camera. And other hardware related things as you mentioned. You are totally correct.
Down the road they will be able to pack all the power and features into a thin light weight device. I'd say with the quad core, 3D, ICS, and high resolution Android tablets and phones on their way... we are closing in on that gap of thin, light weight, extremely powerful devices.

When they come out, I hope I can afford one of them...:^)
I loved my old 7" for gaming, reading, etc. But it was failing for me on work related items. the 10" lets me read PDF's, type a little easier (still using swype), watch NetFlix in between appointments, etc.
With regards to portability my 7" went into my cargo pocket on my shorts. The Xoom I carry around in a stand/case that looks like a normal paper portfolio which works well and I haven't forgotten it anywhere. I honestly leave the laptop at home with TeamViewer setup and remote in if I need more than the tablet can do.
I wouldnt mind a play with a Flyer or similar just to see how much difference there is between the two..
10 inch is perfect for me, the 7s just feel like a really big phone to me.

Current Xoom size is in the Goldilocks zone for me...I like the form factor, too.
Dont get me wrong, I really like my Xoom, but I also have a DHD so my question would be get a smaller phone and get a smaller tablet so the whole lot is more portable or just stick with the sizes I have..
For a while the size of the Xoom was an issue for me. It simply wasn't "transportable" enough.
I even got one of those cheapo "ePad" 7-inch tablets from Hong Kong just so I could have the tablet experience in a pocketable form factor.
Anyway, the smaller tablet gave up the ghost, and I again began using my Xoom everyday.
The changing seasons has been a BIG help for me. Why? Jackets! I have an off-the-rack coat/jacket and two Scottevest items all with interior pockets big enough to hold my Xoom in the Motorola standard or AYL leather case without issues (and without it looking like I have a tablet in my pocket). Therefore, I can literally carry my Xoom everywhere without a man-bag!

I can't really advise about the phone because my phone is never special to me--just a phone--but the Xoom is really a perfect size. Small enough to carry everywhere and large enough to be really functional.
10" is just right. now, if there's a clam type tablet just like Sony's, then perhaps up to 12"
any more and it would have a very cumbersome surface area once opened.
the weight though cannot exceed the current weight of the xoom. as the xoom is already on the heavy side as it is now.

I have both a 7" tab and the 10" Xoom, and there is not even a comparison! I find myself not even using the 7" tab anymore (and they have all the same apps on)! If you go with the 7" I think you will find yourself wishing you had a 10". (lol)
I like the 10" for gaming because you can see whats under your thumbs while playing but then sometimes games or apps ask you to swipe in the middle or press a button and you have to change your position just for that command ( thats dev problem maybe they think you´re on a 7" screen and can do that swipe without changing your grip).
As a reader the 10" its really great you dont have to zoom the xoom (lol) to see well. i have a 7" huawei and i always have to zoom to read a pdf or a book. But then some readers dont have the change of page via tap and ask you to swipe from one side to another and thats a problem.
Also i find it really hard to type if it isnt in my lap. i got the thumb keyboard app but sometimes i wish there where no buttons in the middle because they are unreacheable (is there an app for something like the courier keyboard prototype from microsoft?) Anyway if you rotate the screen to write like in your phone then prepare to have thumb abs because its heavy in any tablet even the ipad.

And your arguments about the camera specs are right, when you just look at the hype about megapixel. But the image sensor is much more important for the quality of a picture. So i would like it to see the nexus prime with a better sensor, and less mp.
If you are interested, you can search for "megapixel vs. image sensor"

If your camera has to be a compact, be sure to get a big sensor (1/1.6" or 1/1.7") and not too much megapixels.

Phones only really need 5mp. 8mp will make the picture larger, but that doesn't mean that it will be better.
Then again if you really want an amazing camera that also happens to make calls, then check out the Nokia N8. 12MP and a Carl Zeiss (SP?) on that bad boy...

Well I have actually used all three that are best in the business- samsung galaxy s 2, n8 and se arc se ARC has the best camera of all three and sg2 has also a better camera then n8 so 12 MP s don't really matter when u don't have optical zoom, the quality matter and arc outstands both sgs2 and n8 !

A little disappointed with the hardware (processor was rumoured differently, for one) but it's still going to be one hell of a phone.
What i'd like to see:
I'd very much like if they'd stop making bigger screens. I really think 4'' was the sweet spot, nearly 5'' is... well, too big imo. I realize this may be a requirement for 1280 x 720-pixel res but i honestly believe my phone is big enough as it is (i own an SGS). Granted, higher resolution rules but... well, it's a phone, not a tablet.
I'd also like to see an SD card slot. I can't really see why not. Sure you already have 32Gb. More than enough for me as far as space goes, but i usually leave my phone downloading stuff over the night. SO much faster and easier to just take the card out and plugging in the computer in the morning than having all of that transferred over wireless again.
Android also has a few issues with sdcards (try setting an mp3 as your ringtone stored in the sd, removing, putting the card back in and get a call), but removing the slot completely isn't really a solution and it doesn't take that much space.
Aluminum instead of plastics. Or at least solid stuff for a lasting phone. Phones aren't meant to fall but shi* happens and i'd like my 500€ investment a bit better suited to survive. Don't really mind plastics though, they make my phone lighter, but i'd like some solid stuff for a change. At the very least, nothing as thin as the back cover of an SGS2, please. If we're doing plastics, i'm thinking the back cover of the iphone 3GS. Has a great solid feeling.
I don't care much for the camera. Only think i'd ask is decent, solid shots and that the sensor not to take much space in the back. Cameras usually spoil the design with a huge lump in the back. If it's glass could be made not to touch the surface of the table to prevent scratches, would be cool as well.
What i'd like to see is that great responsiveness to touch iphones have that android seems to lack, even on higher end devices. Sure they work great, but now and then android seems to skip a beat or just lag for 0.5 sec before registering touch. Lockscreens are particularly affected by this.
That said i have really high hopes for ICS. REALLY. I don't care much for competition (hey everyone should use whatever they like or suits them best) but android has always been a few steps ahead of iOS as far as complexity goes. This is a good thing, for me at least. I don't mean to offend anyone, but really, every time i need to use iOS i feel kind of retarded. Hand feeding me stuff that'd be obvious already just works against me. Apple didn't do much to add for that (seen loads of people disappointed, me included) so I honestly believe android can push it ahead once and for all.
My needs may be a bit different that the rest of the world, but i'd prefer some core improvements (like responsiveness improved and bug corrections) other than extra semi-useless new features (like voice control). That'd make for a more solid experience, imo. All that said, I'm kind of excited about this, might really be my next phone if it hits enough spots on my book.

Good you pointed out about screen as many people including you have a little bit misunderstanding about bigger screens- a bigger screen doesn't mean a very big phone. they reduce the extra space from edges and boundaries to make screen big( give a nice look at sgs2 and sgs2 HD lte and you'll notice that sgs2 has a big home button which is more of a square whereas sgs2 hd lte has a mere small rectangle home button so they have reduced spaces for sure and also the small buttons will be till convinient to press), now the big fact in case of Samsung galaxy nexus or nexus prime is that it wont have those capacitive, back, menu ,home(mostly hard key) buttons, Those will be replaced by on screen buttons so more space reduced for bigger screen. All other things you pointed out will be made cleared once the ics and new device is itself released but about touch responsiveness - all smartphones these days have nearly same touch sensors which are gr8 but the thing which makes apple devices smoother and more responsive is GPU acceleration, which is very good in apple's ios then in android that's why many people were asking the Guy who got the ics equipped nexus s that ' did you feel gr8 touch responsiveness on your nexus s ?'. I am also looking forward to this event to know that will ics have gpu accelearion or not.

Nexus Prime correct Specs
CORRECT SPECS:
http://www.gsmarena.com/source_close_to_google_reveals_real_nexus_prime_specs-news-3239.php
"According to our source, the device codenamed Nexus Prime is going to ship with Samsung's own chipset, with a blazingly fast dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz. But wait, there's more.
On that chipset will also reside a powerful dual-core GPU from Imagination. We suspect it's going to be the PowerVR SGX543MP2, or in other words, the same GPU found in the iPad 2 (and quite probably on the iPhone 4S as well).
On the back, instead of the 5-megapixel snapper, our source claims, there's an 8-megapixel, full 1080p HD video-shooting camera with some sort of an improved sensor. As for the battery, expect a 2050mAh one (do we hear a whoa?), which should be good for a couple of days use without charging.
The Nexus Prime will also be LTE-enabled, but the most interesting part is that it would probably boast a dual-mode GSM/CDMA radio, just like the Apple iPhone 4S.
All those specifications sound almost too nice to be true, but keeping in mind the advertisement for the Nexus Prime, prompting us that "something BIG is coming", we won't be surprised if all of these purported specs turn out to be real.
What we do know for sure is that the head-turning 4.65-inch, 1280x720 pixels screen is definitely a go. Whatever the truth might be, we'll definitely find out on October 11, which is just a few days from now."

New Sidekick (4G LX?) Wish List

Any Wish Lists for what the Sidekick 4G LX (I am guesstimating the new name of the Next Generation model) should have??
My list:
* A bigger screen (closer to 4 inches).
* Full Unicode Support, including manual entry of symbols (like Alt+#### on PCs and similar to older Sidekicks). Support for a wider array of symbols via the Symbols key (customizable??).
* More built-in memory.
* LED lights that are accessible to a wider array of apps (not just the built-in ones).
* Smiley Button that works in ALL apps, not just the built-in Texting app
* If you have to add bloatware (like DriveSmart) allow it to be easily uninstalled.
*Allow customizable color themes.
*provide a better font where it is clear the difference between l (lower L) I and 1 (like the older sidekicks did)
Any others you want to add to the list??
I'd be fine with retaining the screen we have now, though stretching it out to the borders of the case does sound nice. The bigger priorities for me would be to add a faster CPU, some extra memory, and get ICS. An HDMI output would be a nice bonus, but definitely not a requirement.
Despite what HTC says, I don't want my cell phone to be the thickness of a playing card. I quite like the chunky shape of the Sidekick and would much much much much much much much much much much much rather have that than an angular and awkward iPhone 4-shaped phone with shorter battery life. Really thin phones are weird to hold, and the battery life is short enough as it is with our chunky battery.
is it confirmed there making one? id like a bigger screen and a dual core, but thats about all.
Nothing specific other than saying they are not retiring the brand and hope to release a new version in the future.
I'd possibly be going on the crazy end of the spectrum for a great sidekick 4g/5g/lte whatev
5" screen with a keyboard that slides out (similar to the OQO model 2) with a full qwerty like the sidekick but with aswell a mouse button.
REAL GORILLA GLASS!!
on the face of the device would be captive touch buttons similar to ones found on the captivate/vibrant
A Texas instrument based cpu dual core preferably (TI because they are more friendly with source code)
1gb of ram
8gb internal memory aswell as a microSD slot
petaband radio similar to the one in the galaxy note so it will work just about anywyere with gsm
HDMI output
Sound chipset that has background filtering
ICS with as little reskinning as possible
probably will never happen but a mad man can dream can't he?

Why? The reason I own the SK4G is that it is the only phone besides the G1 with a 5-row keyboard and Hard-buttons. Making the hard-buttons capacitive is a deal-breaker for me! At least the Back button must be clicky hardware, not "don't know if I pressed it or not" and "sometimes press it by mistake" capacitive soft-buttons).
If this phone had updated processor/memory, a better camera with flash (or awesome low-light performance), and a brighter edge-to-edge high-res screen, it would be perfect. NFC and HDMI-out would be a bonus.
I really like the design on this device(slightly tilted screen, physical buttons, GREAT keyboard), so I wouldn't mind if they continued this train of thought. But yeah, more RAM would be a must, to hopefully prevent the freezing and rebooting problems. And for me, a 3.7 in. screen would be cool, and a better camera. And also, improve the trackpad.
I know what we need. Replace the utterly useless micro optical trackpad! Give us a ball, a nub, a much bigger optical trackpad, ANYTHING!
Also, an inverted T set of arrow keys in the keyboard would be spectacular.

lol. See, at least one thing on that ultimate list is obtainable. Too bad the phone mfgs don't get it and make more of them.
With a screen that big, you could have a Function Key row and a number pad! It will end up looking like the new tablet with a slide out keyboard..

If there's going to be another sidekick, i'd avoid it like the plague if it's from samsung again. It says a lot when they get the keyboard drivers wrong on at least two phones. Also, touchwiz.
Here's what i'm hoping on the next sidekick, if we see another one:
- Dual core 1 GHz or more CPU
- 1GB RAM
- 5 row keyboard
- 4 inch screen (i don't mind bigger, but i think 4 inch is the most likely size, and should please most people)
- 960x540 screen (800x480 is getting a little outdated, though it's still a good resolution)
... and interestingly enough, this phone leaked a few days back with similar specs i listed, and i'm already eyeing it: http://www.phonearena.com/phones/LG-Cayenne_id7120
I don't know the general opinion of LG around here, but I've had a good experience with my ancient LG GW620 and its lovely 5 row keyboard, though it was slow as hell and uses a CPU that's even older than the G1.

The optical trackthing is useless, agreed. The sun and other heat sources create more input on it than I do. Or did, before I disabled it and forgot about its existence.
Real arrow keys would be nice, but I remapped the insipid smiley key to the up arrow, and the only-ever-pressed-accidentally microphone key to down arrow. So I can at least get around in my command history.
Apart from that, as others have said, more RAM (I'll go so far as to say 1.5 GB), although I don't really feel the need for a faster processor. 5 GHz 802.11n would be nice.
And last but not least... better code drops from the manufacturer. Samsung and T-Mobile did the bare minimum to comply with the GPL. TI internals would be a good start. Fewer proprietary peripherals, more open ones.
And under no circumstances may the keyboard be reduced in number of rows, spacing, or tactile quality.
I want my d-pad and hardware trackball back.
And, I want my pop/swivel hinge back.
There's no harm in putting that d-pad back. I am tired of hearing people that play games on their phone complain that a phone looks like you could play a game on it.
Devolution is real.
As a SK supporter since the day i had to plug my redic dot matrix camera into my bric err cinderblock black and white OG sidekick "1g" and my mr cartoon sk2 and the overhyped overpriced no difference but a lil thinner and a flashy rollerball with same booty screen sk3 (they lost me to crackberry during the whole slide lx dwade ed 07 08 09 new sk every month bs) id like to say the typical dual core 4+ inch screen 1gb+ ram as most but by the time this thing actually would come out u gotta imagine the landscape of the future androids. ics is already internally being considered a flop or to be politically correct a "gateway"(windoze me millenium ed if u will)to intertwine both tablet and phone interfaces and to make way for the more slightly desktop interfaced and integrated android 5 already in testing and rumored to make a q4 this year debut...so in other words q3 next yr if we r lucky.(its coming eventually, phone tablet and chromebooks all running the same android) so seeing how the sidekick has historically been behind the ball as far as tech ill just be happy with a galaxy s2 running ics built into a SK package. i tried to pretend when i 1st upgraded to the s2 with a bt keyboard and rigged case but nothing and i mean nothing out today beats the sidekick layout and keyboard. give me the s2 guts in a sk package and a below 500 pricetag a year from today and im happy, bigger higher res screen is a must but for petes sake...dont forget the freaking camera flash this time!

prefer but dont really care about the hinge but ditto on the rollerball, tho it jams with dust and the d pad. this new joystick sucks balls. btw while we r dreaming. quad core the b 2gb ram 32gb internal 64gb external sdxc and a 5 inch hd screen 8+MP cam w/flash! all with the sidekick layout/keyboard and id shell out 1500 bucks right now lol samsung would prolly just jack it up with gingerbread or some crap
I'm quite happy with the hinge design we have now. It's very strong and solid. Much more so than the classic Sidekick mechanism. I've yet to see a Sidekick 4G with the screen broken off. But I've seen older sidekicks in two pieces.
I suspect it also allows the phone to be thinner, but I can't confirm that.

So why DID Samsung go with 1280 x 800?

It's not as if Samsung doesn't know how to make good screens and at $500 it's not as if they are giving away a $200 loss leader tablet to sell content. So why? The screen resolution is the ONLY thing that keeps the Note 10.1 from being the greatest tablet of all time and severely hurting iPad 3 sales.
Everyone will have their opinion on this but I'll give you mine.
Reason 1 - speed.
Reason 2 - the s-pen.
It is clear that the Note 10.1 has been designed as a tool and not a toy. It is a productivity device. As such, speed and functionality trumps eye-candy. Based upon what I have been reading about the ASUS Infinity, the HD screen seems to cause performance issues.
There is also the issue of the s-pen. This is pure conjecture on my part but it seems intuitive that writing on an HD screen will require more processing power than writing on a 1280 x 800 screen. There are more pixels to change. I believe that Samsung looked at it and asked themselves, what is the lowest resolution we can do (thereby improving s-pen function) but still deliver an acceptable image?
** It could be that Samsung just cheaped out but I don't think so. If they gave us a super HD screen but the s-pen lagged it would have been game over. I think it came down to a question of what the user would be most willing to sacrifice. Since the Note is a productivity device, that would be eye-candy. Speed, above and beyond all else was key.
Just my 2 cents. What do you think?
I've read that it's the max resolution supported by the Wacom digitizer.

From what i read its the maximum resolution supported by the exynos chip. With the new exynos chip which i soooo hoped for to be inside this tablet, the max resolution would be i think double.
I only have one concern before buying this tablet:
what if...the tablet which should be around 11.6 inch coming from sammy (probably the next few months) will also be a note instead of a "standard" galaxy tab..? That would be a huge blow for all note 10.1 buyers :/
Probably has to do with the digitizer pen technology. Even Wacom doesn't offer the comparable Cintiq (minus multi-touch except for top of line 24HD) with a resolution higher than 1280x800 until you go from the $1000 12" to the $2000 22" model.
http://www.wacom.com/en/Products/Cintiq/Compare Models.aspx
I don't believe it has to do with the digitizer. There are tablets that use the same one and have higher resolution.
I think it's for speed and possibly limitations on the cpu. Samsung wanted this tablet to fly. Increasing the resolution would be a problem for that. I think next year we will get a high res Note.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 10.1
I think Samsung did a great job with this 720P HD display. Its something about it that's different from my previous prime or my nexus 7. The colors are richer/more detailed. The prime and nexus 7 has exact same resolution also. Im more than satisfied with this display. Everything looks crisp to me.
Well I don't have my note 10.1 (arrives later today) but my dads tf300 has the same resolution and my brother has a new Asus nexus 7. I compared the both as the nexus has a higher dpi and personally I can hardly see any difference! So does it really matter that much?

This is what I've heard as well, although I couldn't find anything from Samsung about it. But it seems the most likely (while it's possible that Exynos 4 does support higher resolution outputs, it might not be fluid enough for use with the S Pen as lag is definitely more noticeable with a stylus than a fingertip).
Cranking up the resolution requires cranking up the GPU horsepower, which means more battery consumption.
Look at the iPad - they needed to make the battery around 50% bigger in order to offset the significantly increased power consumption. This means a heavier device, and MUCH longer recharge times.
The iPad's resolution is a waste of pixels. There's flaunting spec epeen, and there is proper systems engineering - Samsung did proper systems engineering here.
Before getting my Note 10.1 I got myself an Asus Infinity Pad (which was promptly returned due to the screen coming OUT of the case). The screen WAS magnificent, However, there was so much power going to the screen than the entire OS was lagged out pretty badly. Even after their OTA updates, it was pretty bad. Battery drain was horrible unless I put it into the "power saving" mode and at that point the screen on my Galaxy Tab and Note 10.1 was beautiful compared to it.
I agree with the OP. Speed and the S-pen are the primary causes. Honestly, I don't need an ungodly powerful screen. I use this for work and for play and it does extremely well on both. I am often amazed at how quickly pages load, or the fact that I don't have to buffer pages, books or other things as long as other tablets take. I will take power over beauty any day of the week...

Just received my N9005

I received my Note 3 N9005 (LTE Qualcomm version) this morning and so far it's blown me away. I had an S4 (also Qualcomm LTE quad core) for a few weeks before ditching it and going back to my Note 2 due to the lag and various performance and heat issues, but I'm glad to say they're gone completely on the new Note 3. Under heavy load the back does get warm obviously, it's a fast processor and high-end GPU after all, but it stays cooler than the S4 and takes longer to heat up in general. Everything in the UI is utterly smooth and lag free, launching the camera app and taking a snap is near instant compared to the ~2 second lag on the S4 between pressing the shutter button and an image being captured. [email protected] videos look stunning, I was seriously impressed at the phone's ability to keep up and maintain the frame rate, and when in this mode the screen updates at 60fps as well so you get a good preview. [email protected] is likewise excellent, although just be sure to select 1/4 speed rather than the default 1/8 speed, as this still captures at 120fps (1/4 speed), but encodes and plays it back at 15fps (1/8 speed) which is not smooth at all. The display is absolutely beautiful, coming from the Note 2 the step up in resolution and colour presentation are immediately obvious, and even outdoors it still looks great. This is the nicest phone display I've ever laid eyes upon, and I've had a good look at most of 'em. Gone is the black crush effect, the purple redraw artefacts and the grittiness of the S4's panel, and being sAMOLED contrast is exceptional. In the hand it feels light compared to the Note 2, but at the same time sturdier, better built and there is zero flex or creaking unlike it's predecessor. USB 3.0 file transfers are noticeably quicker than USB 2, except of course if you're writing to the external MicroSD card as it's write speed is the bottleneck there. The faux-leather effect back still feels like plastic, but there's better grip and being matte, no fingerprints.
So far it feels like it justifies the high price (£604.96 from www.unlocked-mobiles.com including shipping), and time will tell on the battery life. Despite the bump in resolution I'm expecting good things there, the more efficient SOC and slightly larger capacity cell should hopefully offset the draw of running all 2,073,600 of those tiny little LEDs. So yeah, so far I love it and can easily recommend the upgrade from the Note 2, and especially the S4. If anyone wants more details, just ask
Nice little review.. what you think about the speakers? any better than the note 2? the note 2 speakers were better than s4 or any other samsung phone previously so maybe this one is a tad bit better? coming from the htc one, I know im going to miss those speakers but hopefully i dont cringe in pain from the experience on the note 3 (speaker wise) lol ..no one seems to do a review of the speakers on youtube and when i get the phone, thats the first thing i will do for people
As far as the speakers are concerned I just want them to be louder. I hate it when it is so quiet you can barely hear anything.
So can you give us an update on the loudness for the speakers please.
Don't worry about the battery life, it's pretty decent. I have posted detailed battery usage on my thread if you're interested. And the charging speed is around 48%/hour so you can topple it up pretty quickly compared to other phones.

The loud speaker is definitely an improvement on the Note 2, and being positioned on the bottom edge doesn't get obscured merely by putting the phone down on a soft surface such as the arm of my sofa. In terms of volume it's clearly louder and has less distortion than the Note 2 and S4, but it won't match the experience of the HTC One with it's dual front-facing speakers. Quality wise, it's still a tiny phone speaker so you won't be doing any serious listening with it, but it's loud and clear enough to be heard in noisy environments within limits, not in a club or near a runway obviously, but it's acceptable in the car and walking around the city. The headphone output however is I think my favourite improvement. Audio output via a decent set of headphones is simply incredible. Not just incredible for a phone, but bona fide excellent. I'm not claiming it'll best a Linn reference set up, but I've heard poorer audio from home setups and dedicated headphone amps costing many times the price of this phone. PowerAmp seems to downsample anything above 48khz, but the stock player renders 192KHz 24-bit flac files beautifully.

I live in Scotland, I don't know what anything looks like under direct sunlight  It's fairly bright outside just now but overcast, and the screen remains clearly legible and bright. Indoors under LED bulbs it looks great too, and reflection is not as much of an issue as it was on the Note 2.

The only difference I can see is the ATT version comes with a slightly different back cover, which features a rather tacky (in my opinion) stylised "Galaxy Note 3" in silver near the bottom.
