It is very necassary to add narrowing down / picking out / taking persons from contacts and dialing list starting from even one figure but which is / are in any place of numbers, not only in the begginning of it, such as in Sony Xperia dialer app.
There will be talking about tuning / changing / improving of stock dialer app for the stock firmware, or default dialer app for non stock firmwares, but not about some additional addons to dialer or dialer substitutes.
Who knows, how is it possible that smart dial function can act as in Sony Xperia smartphones or how is to switch such behavior or how and which way can tune phone app / firmware to or where is to write to HTC or how can do the following, looks like Xperia smart dial behavior.
So, I press figure 3 in dialer line and all persons from contacts as from dialing list (all, incoming, outgoiong, missed) who's numbers have 3 figure are displayed, and this figure is marked in got numbers,
then I add figure 9 to 3, there is 39 in dialer line and persons from contacts and dialing list is narrowed down to person who's numbers has 39, and 39 is marked in got numbers also, then I add 1 and get 391 in dialer line and persons are narrowed down more, according to pressed 391 figures and so on.
And it is not important or it doesn' t depend on where are searching figures placed, in the begginning of picking out numbers or in ANY place of it.
Who can may be add such functionality or where can I find andswer ?
I have German HTC One XL 32 Gb version.
But the same situation for all HTC One, including S, X, XL, unlike of Xperia P, S, Acro S.
Come again? The smart dialer works perfectly for me just the way it is. All I have to do is start dialing someone's name and they pop up. Don't see how that can be improved upon.
Esp chip integration. Will automatically call once you decide your going to make the call. With proper engineering you could even carry on the coversation without having to speak
Also, cross-posting is not going to improve it either.

Forv you may be. For me and others there is big missing in smart dial moreover we talk about top model.
I wrote, and you can look at Sony Xperia phone app smart dial realization and propably will understand what need to improve.
Some time I needed to call to person I didn' t remember its completed number, I didn' t remember even the begginning of the number, but I remembered some figures which was located in the middle of the number but closer to an end of that, for example there is number +79213457866? I remembered 786 only, LG 2x could find, Sony Xperia Acros could find, LG 4X could find, but HTC One XL couldn' t.
And in need to take into account that searching number could be as in contacts as in dialin list that is you couldn' t be succeed in searching by name.

Esp chip integration, sounds good. Can you make so or not ?
For anyone not quite understanding what the OP is talking about, I want to try to explain quickly. The Sense dialer only searches phone numbers if you type the beginning of the phone number. For example, take two contacts, 123-456-7890 and 890-756-1234. If you dial "89", only the second contact will come up. If you dial "123", only the first contact will come up. He is asking for functionality where both numbers would show up under both situations, searching for the string in the entire number and not just the beginning of the number.
Dialer One, free in the Play Store, offers this functionality, so I don't think there's any need to modify the Sense dialer.

Well, I guess people really do things differently.
I can't remember any part of any of my contacts phone numbers. It seems like it would be much easier to just enter a person's name, not random parts of their phone number.

Yes, think different - advertising slogan.

But some figures can remember quickly.

I can understand why it might be useful to have the phone search in the way you describe, I don't think it is a pressing issue for most users. The way our smart dial is implemented is mostly to search for contact names and the numbers you know by heart already. I save all of my contacts with names, and you won't catch me trying to search for loose numbers. Perhaps try re-evaluating your search and contact organization methods?

Hi tried posting this in Q&A thread and got no response. So thought I'd try again here in the Apps section.
Is there a way set a discrete ringtone to unknown callers. I do not believe there is a way to do this right now. I think I need an application to do it for me.
Apparently there are three different types of unknown calls:
1. Calls from number-withheld callers.
2. Calls from a public telephone.
3. Calls from the environment where you are unable to notify the number.
It is not possible to treat the three separately.
No problems here... All I want is for my phone to use a specific ringtone for these calls, that is different to the default one I assign to contacts or calls from non withheld numbers.
I do not want to block or divert or silence them, which is what the current "unknown number" Applications do.
I do not want a different ringtone for callers not in contacts. So don't confuse my request as a requirement for this.
I get a lot of legitimate calls from a single "unknown caller" who is is fact my employer. They use number-withheld to mask who is calling. So I want my phone to ring differently when they call. Seems a pretty simple request to me.
The Nexus call log does not let you add Unknown calls in the history to contacts, which I have read in another forum as a suggested solution.
Simply want the phone to realise caller ID is unknown and because of this fact use a dedicated ringtone.
Any ideas? Perhaps for you programmer types, it is a simple app waiting to be made, that no one has thougt of yet
You could even call it "Unknown Tone". That rhymes and has a certain ring to it. pardon the pun
Alright - so no one is at all interested in this app. I can live with that.
But a simple favour. Could someone at least tell me if an app to do this seemingly simple task would be relatively easy to make?

Its 6am here in the US and your post is 4 hours old. Wait a bit and you will get answers
Do you have access to google voice? It lets you screen unknown callers.
Thanks for the reply. I recall a lack of interest back when I had a WinMo phone a couple of years ago too. Just not something most people need.
Don't have google voice as I am in Australia. If I new how to program, I would have a crack at it. On the face of it, it sounds so simple. Wonder if it would be a simple utility that I could do as a way of learning something about programming with the SDK.
So no one nows if a app to set a dedicated ringtone for unknown callers is possible?
I have installed Eclipse and the android SDK, naively thinking I might be able to make this app myself. Hello World is about the limit of what I can do. I have NFI where to start programming this thing.
Funny thing is on the face of it it seems such an easy thing to do.
If phone rings AND caller ID = unknown, assign ringtone X.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=666894
It's dedicated to ROM development, I think...but, maybe you can get some help there on coding...
OK thanks will give it a try. It is such a simple idea after all.
Unknown caller answer
Hi
Just had the same issue...Go into your call history and find one of the "unknown" or "private" numbers with no phone number attached and save it as a contact and then assign your ringtone....I have a htc hero and can do this. Just did it for Private and Unknown, they can be no number attached to it, otherwise it will only work for that particular num.
NO app needed.
Good Luck

Not the case I am afraid.
Hero must run an earlier version of the android OS that the Nexus One. Because what you suggested was the very thing I first tried before starting this thread. Android 2.1 is smart enough or stupid enough (depending on your point of view) to prevent adding "Unknown" numbers to contact.
Normal number in call history, long press gives:
Call 1234567890
Edit number before call
Send text message
Add to Contacts
Remove from Call log
Unknown number in call history, long press gives:
Remove from Call log
So as you can see the lack of an "Add to Contacts" choice means I am currently snookered. What android is on your Hero and do you get the same list of options as shown above when you long press an unknown number?
Perhaps the functionality you described was removed without thought to unintended consequences in OS2.1 . They might put it back in with OS2.2 with any luck.

Yes I heard you the first time. I just tried to suggest an easy way to get rid of the unknown calls because I figured why would anyone want to here an annoying ringtone for a call that he probably doesn't want to pick up! This is why I have such few posts but I have been a member here for a lot longer than most people! You sound really angry there bud ^_^
Nah not angry bud. Just pointing out that your suggestion (for which I thanked you) does not assign ringtones to unknown callers and therefore is not a solution for me. Will be interesting to see if Froyo does this any differently. I am guessing not.
I would like to know an answer to this as well. I just upgraded to nexus one from treo 680. IN the Treo it was a simple matter to assign a particular ringtone to unknown numbers, in fact it was a menu option in call settings.
Isn't it interesting how the Treo has it as a Menu option. Where as for all intensive purposes it is not possible in the Android OS.
I now have Android OS 2.2 on my N1 and it remains unchanged. Still no obvious way to assign a discrete ring tone to an Unknown caller. Plenty off apps to block/kill Unknown/Private calls. But no way to simply give them a discrete ringtone.
Just to add that I've also wanted this since I first got my Hero - it should be possible without having to resort to using an app, though i'd be grateful for an app if it existed
You guys should request it for CyanogenMod or ask WYSIE if it's possible to add to his Contact.apk mod.
Here's a stupid question though... have you tried first going into the options for contacts and UN-checking "only contacts with phones" and then see if you can have a contact that doesn't have a phone number attached named "Unknown" ? I realize it's a long shot, but maybe you were only trying to add it when that option was checked....
Not sure if this can be setup to achieve what the OP needed?
http://www.getjar.com/mobile/11591/blackballer-(tm)-for-windows-mobile/
Hi all!
I'm virtually 100% an Android convert, putting it on my HD2 a week ago and barely looking back!
One of the few things I do need Windows Mobile for, though, is using a small application called LowCaller (lowcaller.com). This allows me to call contacts via my Voipcheap account but rather than going via the internet connection (WiFi, 3g) it calls a 020 (London) number and then directs me to the person I'm calling.
This means I get perfect quality international calls no matter where I am and I only use my inclusive contract minutes.
I've tried to contact LowCaller via their website but I can't get through to them (the damn verification code is always apparently wrong!) so can't find out if they have an Android version in the pipeline. They appear to support WM, iPhone, Blackberry and Symbian so an Android version would be very logical on their part!
Any alternatives?
Thanks!
I tried SipDroid with my SIP.
Can't hear anything on my end, maybe you have better results?
You can try Nimbuzz or Fring, and then add your VoipIP provider
Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions but these apps/messengers are solely for calling via Voip directly to another party, as opposed to calling a local number which then, via my Voip account, directs to another party (meaning that I can do it from anywhere without the need for an internet connection, and with perfect results - no lag, cut outs, etc.)
LowCaller is fantastic because I've driven around towns and countryside in England while talking via bluetooth to my friend in Canada on her mobile - the quality was practically like that of any normal call!
It works like this,
I select 'Call via LowCaller' from my phonebook > My phone calls an 020 London number owned by LowCaller > The call gets routed to the number of the person I'm calling and I lose my inclusive minutes just like any normal call.
I think rebtel might do what you need
I use jajah (jajah.com) . It works like you described. Sort of. They give you a local nr for all your foreign contacts. So there is no app but you just dial the unique local nr and your friend in timbuktu answers the phone.

Come on guys!!
The guys is asking you about LowCaller in Android, and you recommend jahjah and Rebtel!!!!
JahJah and rebtel make a newnumber for each contact!! This is pain. You dont want to make a new number for each contact!!
We dont want to use 3g or wifi! we want to use a landline number.
So please, if you know anything exactly similar to lowcaller, please answer. Otherwise, DO NOT give bad recommendations!!
Afaik, rebtel does exactly what he asked for. I don't think you need to set up different no.s for different contacts, it just routes all international calls through a local no.

OK, I won't.
Bump!
Still no Android support from LowCaller. Any developments here guys?
Remember I'm after a LowCaller-type setup, i.e. I'm using my contract minutes to call a national number that will connect me to another number via my Voip account.
So stuff that simply makes calls via WiFi/3g isn't what I'm after (but thanks for the suggestions)

Hi keesvl55 - I've installed CcApp but can't work out how to (or if I'm able to) set it up to work with VoipCheap. I seem to be only able to add calling cards, which aren't what I'm using.
Looks like we're getting there anyhow!
I wonder if LowCaller will ever release a Droid version or update any of their current versions? It seems they never updated their WM client to work with 6.5.X, hence why I've always stuck with regular ol' 6.5, so maybe all hope is lost for them to come out with something themselves?
I guess another way would be to save the numbers LowCaller assigns my international contacts with in WM. I'm unsure, however, just how long these stay valid for before another gets assigned.
BUMP!
2,000 views so I can't be the only one after a LowCaller port / clone for Android!
I've noticed LowCaller's contact form on their website is working again now:
http://lowcaller.com/en/contact.php
Go there and request they release an Android version to the marketplace.
If you type "LowCaller" into Google now the first suggestion is "lowcaller android" or "lowcaller for android" - there's obviously a big demand so let's get harassing their developers!
Lord knows I might even click an ad or two should the need arise!

Christ! I think you may be right. I'll be trying it out tomorrow. Great spot !
Just a follow up to any one of the trillions Googling and finding this thread - as suggested above Betamax Dialer (now found on the market) looks like the way to go. The only difference I see between this and LowCaller is that with this you have to specify your Voip retailer's (e.g. voipcheap) local access number, so you only use that one number as opposed to a different landline number for each of your contacts in LowCaller.
I've bought Betamax Dialer Pro to show my support for a developer actually creating a Betamax local-calling client though I'm not sure exactly how the "call-2-call" or whatever it's called feature works. Guess I'll have a play around and see!
Under £1 on the market for Pro if anyone wants to try.
Thanks again 90180360.

The problem I have is that it doesn't integrate in the phone's dialer.
Also, if you want to choose a contact, it has to populate the contact list each and every time.
I still prefer to just save those contacts I want to call by VOIP as ACCESSNUMBER Pause PHONENUMBER in my phone book.
Works perfectly, no additional software needed.

If you youtube the windows phone mago review you will see some of the features in action which could help some of the questions you havent asked.
Press and hold on a msg, you will see the option for forward. Its pretty easy to find out. That's why the other guy was questioning if you have used a wp7 phone on a daily base. Yeah, you do need to calm down a bit. If those features were important to you, a quick search would have solved your problem.

In my opinion, NoDo fixed the basics. WP7 was horrid before NoDo. Mango is supposed to go beyond the basics with added features bringing WP7 up to the level of other smartphones.
what about contact search in mango? anybody has info on whether we can search by company or still by name only?
Not sure, but there are groups anyway, so you could set up business groups.

When I start typing something in the "People" application, it finds it whether it's in the name, company or notes field of my address book. Google apps synced account, if that's of any interest, but I see no reason it wouldn't be global.
Under settings->personalize->lock screen style I have the "productivity" lock screen setting chosen in order to display calender, texts, etc on the lock screen.
Whenever I get a text the contacts phone number is displayed on the lock screen with the message rather than the contact's actual name.
Does anyone have this bug?

I'm pretty sure it's not a setting, I've looked through settings everywhere. I found a setting under the privacy setting to enable or disable displaying text message text - but nothing related to the contact name / number.
I fixed it by going in and editing each individual number in google contacts and taking them from the 1 (###) ###-#### format to just ########## all consecutive.
Thanks! How did you think to do that? And why does it make a difference? Did it also fix the lag in display names in the messages app for you?

I fixed it by going in and editing each individual number in google contacts and taking them from the 1 (###) ###-#### format to just ########## all consecutive.

Don't have access to enough friend's phones right now to test that but thanks for reporting.
Even if this work around works it's still an issue - I'm sure all of us and HTC will agree that the format of the number shouldn't matter.

You don't need your friend's phone to do that. Just go to contacts.google.com and edit your existing contacts so their phone number is in the correct format.

No, what I was saying is I didn't have other people near me to text me so that I could test out the theory.
There's no way I'm combing through my contacts to remove the parenthesis and dashes from the stored phone numbers to fix this.
I reported the issue to HTC here: http://www.htc.com/us/support/email-support
The more that report it the faster it will be fixed - and hopefully be in the next update.

Ah, I misunderstood you. Sorry about that. I decided to give it a shot just by fixing a couple of numbers of people that I text the most. If it works for them, I'll consider combing through the rest of my people.
Yeah it sucked, but it definitely made it better. I get a full notification on my lock screen from who is sending it by name, and I never have an issue while in the texting app seeing the number and not the name. All around, it's an improvement, and it was much needed. Lol.
Hey guys, so I've been dealing with this issue since I've had the phone in multiple ROMS. So let's say I am trying to call my friend John Z, I go to the keypad and type in 564 and I also have friends John A, B, and F in my contacts, which I never call anyway. So my question is, how would I be able to customize (obv if possible) the order in which my contacts are ordered when typing their characters in the keypad, currently its alphabetical. I tried looking through all the settings and googling with no luck. Thanks!
It might be best to start using their last name assuming you list all your contacts full last names. That's what I do for my multiple contacts with similar first names but different last names.

I was thinking that too last night, but trying to see if I can somehow customize it. If I cant I will definitely change it up.
Haven't found a way, its annoying on this device. My old droid 3 would always pop up the "best match" based on the call logs, s3 apparently does not take that into consideration. I also have been trying to find a way to get the dialer to default to showing the number pad on VM and 800# calls, again this is a standard feature in gingerbread droids! Its so annoying especially in the sun or when driving to have to hit the show keypad button all the time on those types of calls.

Yeah man! Same with my old phone! I had a Mytouch 3g slide and it will sort it how I want my s3 to sort it. I wonder if downloading a new dialer via the play store would solve it or if a dev wanted to take up the challenge.
I've posted that question in multiple development threads with no replies, please start doing it too, maybe if more people ask it may be taken on
I'm actually amazed more people aren't annoyed by this, after all these are phones first!

Completely agree, haha. Ive been googling for a while and still havent found anything. The only conclusion I can see is by using the "Favorites" menu which actually sorts by most freq contacted. It seems like a really easy fix though; just give priority to the favorites when searching then alphabetize or whatever else afterwards.
Exdialer from the playstore. I've been messing with all of the dialers for the past 2 hrs and this one is special. Give it a try, solved my issues. Donate uses root privileges to override the stock dialer.
