Won't charge at all or Connect via USB - Samsung Galaxy Tab Plus

I need immediate help! My sister dropped the tab while the tab was charging and now it won't charge at all or even connect at a PC. There seems to be a little crack just outside the hole for the pin. Any ideas?

Looks like your sister owes you a new tab

Everything is working fine though. Please help, I want to avoid paying to fix it since I don't really have money. I worked hard to get it on my own money considering I'm only a student. Buying a new phone/tab is probably not an option. :|

Sounds like the usb port is broken, try ebay and see if you can pick usb port or again, ebay pick up 2 exra batteries with a wall charger and download wifi file explorer from the play store, it allows you to access sd card through your ip address( you might have to be rooted)

Just to be clear, the crack you're describing is on the Tab itself?

and remember, talking dogs are liars.

I went to a Repair Center, and the chord was the one broken. It can't be determined at all that it was the one broken but they tested the each component and so they knew. Although the pin hole has a crack, it wasn't the issue and they failed to notice it together with the fact that I'm rooted and had flash a UK firmware. They will be giving me a new chord free of charge. Meanwhile I have used a different chord just to charge until the new one is provided.Of course I had to lie my ass off. Haha. Thank you for your time. You may now close the thread.

External Battery charger for TG01??

As per the thread title, I am looking for a battery charger for the TG01. I need one that will simply charge the battery (will need also a spare battery) - and just swap out the batteries as I go. I can't work with an external charger that connects via micro-usb (as I'm having issues with the micro-usb port and can't charge the phone! Therefore need another means of charging ASAP - and will come back and look at how to tackle fixing the micro-usb port at a later stage).
Anyone know where I can get such a thing???
Struggling to do so - so far in my www search....
You mean like this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal...700?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3a6e594a7c
"Universal mobile battery charger" is what I looked for.
You can get better one's with digital readouts, but that is EXACTLY what I bought a few days ago to try and save my TG01 from a bad wm6.5. Just waiting for it to turn up.
@Scougar: Yes - I managed to get one in the end - off ebay. Hopefully it will arrive before the week is out - as I'm currently phone less!
Not good! Mine arrived today btw... Annoyingly no instructions on what the LED colours mean on it, or which terminal is positive and which negative.
btw.. mine says 850ma on it, so not the full 1000ma, but I can live with that.
I bought this on eBay - can´t paste the link here - look for - 1500mah Micro USB Back up Battery Charger + Cable for Toshiba TG01 TG 01
I am very satisfied when need to power battery out not having power adaptor. However I have totally 3 batteries and purchased also the solar power adaptor with internal battery.

I had the same problem re. instructions - but have got the hang of it. However, it's not a sufficient solution for me. It seems to take an absolute age to power up a battery. I have a spare battery - and even this isn't going to be enough.
I guess it's because of the way I use the phone - with connection to usb keyboard - to write emails...even though I remove the cable the moment the email has been written, it absolutely drains battery resources - RAPID!
I will have to try and get the micro-usb port fixed somehow. I've contacted toshiba to see if - first of all there is any warranty cover on the phone (i bought it off ebay - so not sure if covered or not).
Even if not covered, I'm unsure where to send it - or who can really fix this. Does anyone have any ideas? I am based in Ireland. Do Toshiba have a list of approved service centres??
You will just need to get a higher 'ma' rated charger then (so battery will charge faster).
BTW.. sounds stupid.. but have you tried another micro usb cable (a proper charging cable, rather than just a regular data transfer micro usb one?)

Ok, thanks. IF i have no option but to keep using an external charger, may look at gettting another one.

I have tried a number of cables - that had been working at one stage but no longer work. However, they work when it comes to connecting to my usb keyboard.....just not working to charge the phone...
MICRO-USB Repair.
I'm a bit concerned about this - as someone has suggested to me that this can't be repaired - that it's 'terminal'. Can this really be the case????
Seems an awful waste of a phone if that's true....

I'm not sure what "burn's out", so I wouldn't like to speculate, but the repair of the actual 'port' surely wouldn't be that hard even for an amateur solderer? Maybe it's something in a charging chip that's burnt out? Given that you can pick tg01's up for £50+ (I really am guessing here.. I've been drinking).. it probaly isn't worth the cost of a repair unless you do it yourself.

The ruddy thing cost me €200 back then....can't remember for sure when -I think 9 months ago. Just checked ebay and they range from €110-€180. Pretty poor form - if they can't do the job for a couple of years at the very least.
Not sure where I stand as regards warranty - still waiting to hear back from toshiba support.
I don't feel that buying another one is the way to go - if they are flawed in this way. Furthermore, it makes me wonder about investing in a good phone - if they all have a point of weakness in terms of the micro-usb slot. Had a quick look at the nokia lumia at one stage last week....but if I'm using that port heavily (which i am - constantly swapping out between cable (for keyboard) and usb power cable....will the same thing happen?
If you are worried about over working the port, then just get an extension cable or try using a powered USB hub so you won't be swapping it out so often.
The micro usb port design is probably 'weak' compared to the mini USB port design, but it's what we are pretty much every phone on the market is now using. You could also use a USB keyboard.
I would only have considered about £75 for my phone (MODS: I can't sell it , I've bricked it... or as I like to say "I'm between operating systems at the moment" ;-) ) Point is, you can probably get one cheaper than you are seeing on ebay.
I think you are either better off with another phone, or getting a bigger battery, they question is whether you want to invest in the TG01 anymore, or get something else.

How can I use the powered usb hub exactly? I can plug the usb keyboard into it -then run a usb cable between the hub and the usb to micro-usb adaptor that then connects to the phone...is that correct?

This is what is also dampening down my enthusiasm for investing in another phone. It's a situational thing - and I don't really have any other option but to use a usb keyboard (I can't connect via bluetooth).

As regards moving on to a new unit, I don't really want to go down this road for two reasons;
1. I don't think I have got my money's worth out of the spend on the TG01 - and while the work arounds are far from ideal - I am otherwise happy with the phone in principal
2. I fear making another big investment - only for the same thing to happen again (given that I will continue to use micro-usb port heavily
A bigger battery - I don't think is a possibility?? I know there was one oversized battery on the market for that phone - but it came with a new back cover for the phone also - as it was thicker than normal. It was expensive - and it's not really the route I wish to take. What I might do - is buy another battery. Then - with 3 batteries on the go - just keep charging them up on rotation at home.
Mickey mouse approach - but I don't see any other feasible way of handling it.
IF I did get another phone, I don't think it would be the TG01. It served its purpose at the time (and It will continue to do so - although more awkward now). However, I don't think this sort of failure should happen - and support should be better. Very hard to get a hold of someone in support - NO support in ROI - and necessary to mail the phone in to their UK service centre. In addition, just discovered that it's out of warranty.
There are some internal pictures of the TG01 floating around, it might be worthwhile trying to dig those up, and see if you can get a look at the USB connection points, and see if an amateur repair is possible.
EDIT: If you go to the following thread you will find internal pictures It looks to me like the port could be repaired if you have a fine enough soldering iron, or taped it up well enough. (As long as the problem isn't a 'trace' being burnt out... and we assume that the port itself has broken/come loose or needs replacement).
Can someone recommend a good quality external charger
Only a couple of weeks - and the external charger I got off ebay seems to be flaking!
Can anyone recommend a GOOD QUALITY external charger that I could order up - that will work well with TG01 batteries??
Have to say... that one I bought isn't the best quality. connection is 'iffy' now it seems.
Product review: 4/10. d'oh.

I;ve been trawling the net - but they all seem the ruddy same! What would you buy if you had to go again?
Right now - at this moment - the charger is working again - but I spent half the day trying to get it to work up until now! I don't have great faith in it - and if it goes, I'm sans phone once again.
If I could get a reliable charger, I would be fairly happy. I've got into the routine of charging alternate batteries - so that system works (so I can squeeze the outlay on the phone back out of it - before I go and upgrade at a later stage).
The only other type of external charger I could find was this.
So....i've ordered one up....will post back whether it actually does the job or is another piece of sh1t!

Xoom2/Xyboard USB/HDMI card needed

I am looking for the card that has the micro usb and hdmi ports for a Xyboard 10.1. I would assume that the Xoom 2 would have this similar setup but I am not sure. If someone has one of these tablets available for parts, let me know. I have searched for hours trying to find somewhere to buy this with no luck. I also tried my hand at soldering and that did not go so well. Please let me know if anyone knows a way. Thanks!:cyclops:
Plus one.
If somebody has this board, please, pm me.
FYI I ended up buying a shell on eBay for $120. I got more than I needed but now have an extra screen.

Xyboard Uses
I'm a little off topic here as my Xyboard (knock on wood) works great. BUT, what are you all using your Xyboards for? As in, I'm at a point where I can't find more uses for it other than a Music Player in my office and a sketchy universal remote in my living room. If mine crapped out, I don't think I'd be motivated to fix it. I want this thing to excel (I really do!), but because there's been nearly-zero development on it, I don't find myself reaching for it very often. (I've got the $35 Second Shells case for it as well as the Moto Bluetooth Keyboard; I've babied this thing).
I've even thought about mounting it in my car just so it becomes relevant again. Am I missing ways where it can be useful?
Sidenote: my Samsung Chromebook fills 90% of my work/media consumption needs and my Razr M fills out the other 10%.
Also: if it does crap out, I'll totally give you my USB/HDMI port card. I'd love for it to go to a good home.

Hello Friend..
You do own a very capable tablet, what OS are you running, Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich.? I did enjoy GB, but ICS is more advanced, alot more overall performance and options..And especially with the "promised" Jelly Bean upgrade..WooHoo..this tablet will be even more capable and useful..
With ICS and the right Apps. These XYB's will surprise you..Since my last post here..I have purchased a couple junked XYBoards "buy as is" from Ebay..took the two and made ONE that function flawlessly..one had a bad motherboard, the other a bad battery and charge port..
And this is the one I'm using now..SO..I own one of each MZ617 models..a 16, 32 and 64 GB..I love to tinker with these things..THANKS to Root capabilities, SafeStrap and a few more Mods..anyway.
With the correct Apps..these XYB's are a very helpful tool..I will mention only a few functions very useful..
Printing wirelessly world wide, file transfer via Bluetooth and more, office document creation, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint (namely a few)..Measuring distances (feet/inch/metric)..GPS travel ..Cook books, Free Hand note taking, high quality camera and video camera, MP3, MPG, Divix, AVI player, bar code scanner, auto VIN number scanner, auto diagnostic functions, voice recorder, Police, Fire scanner, Social networking, Live video chats with family and friends, Electronic book reader, Graphics editor, video rendering, cloud storage, USB compatible, buy_sale on EBay, Email, alarm clock, stop watch..the list is longer, but I will stop there..is there ANY laptop that can do all this without armfulls of attachments..I cannot imagine without a tablet..and all the above mentioned, a woman can hold in her hand.!!
OH..first and foremost..I'm one of Jehovah's Witnesses..I study the Bible, have the monthly magazines such as the Watchtower and AWAKE!, and our weekly study material, Daily Text, and much more of JW's reading material..I have the complete Bible also in MP3 format, and much more on a single (one) 32 GB Motorola XYBoard 10.1 tablet..I use the tablet in the ministry, going door to door, during our two weekly meetings also..
Now my laptops set most of the time, they are jealous of my XYBoards..now they are only used to Root another XYB or to copy and store my many SafeStrap backups and other files..lol
I certainly hope all my babbling helps you to see, just how Awesome these XYB's really are..
I hope you will find comfort and usefulness with yours..take care..

I found one. It's for the xoom2 but the number on the board is the same 1016326001. Looks identical too. They had 10 in stock. If you wanna wait i'll let you know if it works, just ordered 1. http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-VERIZON...048?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e80ba8bf0
Auction says used but description says This is for the 10.1in Motorola Xoom 2 MZ617. This is a new, unused part directly from the manufacturer.
With having 10 available i'd assume they are new. I sent him a message asking. regardless i ordered one.
Thank you for posting the link, the auction definitely states, "New"..WooHoo..there is hope..I will watch the sale, I hope you receive a new one for your device, Don't know how the EBayer got ahold of 10 of these, but that's great, They are in Calif..seems as thow Texas and California gets most of the good Motorola stuff..lol..
Anyway..I hope the EBayer can get 100 more..I personally just purchased the new Droid Maxx last week, and plan to purchase another in a couple days..So my budget is stressed at the moment..if the EBayer doesn't sale out in a couple weeks, I hope to purchase at least two charge ports..They also have a motherboard for MZ617..I have a 16gb model with a bad MB setting here, I'd like to repair..

faulty charge port workaround & power button request
Yeah, I just bought one of these too although I had got around my faulty port by wiring straight into the battery.
It works really well - it even charges off my regular phone charger now. or the usb port on my PC.
The software doesn't recognise that it's charging but after about 4-5 hours it's fully charged again!
I just hacked off an old usb cable and wired a plug on the end to match the new one I connected to the battery.
I passed the lead out through the hole in the case for sd card/sim socket (mine doesn't have an sd card port)
Make sure you pass it through the hole in the case before you wire up to the battery otherwise the case won't snap together,
and don't try wiring the plug on after connecting it to the battery as you're likely to short the battery.
You have to join the data wires on the usb lead together and this signals to the computer to deliver full current to the port.
What I'm after now is a ribbon with the power/volume buttons on it as while I was doing the charge repair
my son got hold of it and picked off the naked button with his finger nail. (See pics below)
Does anyone have this spare part? It's for a xoom2 mz616 or 617 10" screen. Don't know if any other models will fit
but I can't turn it on now
Please help!
Sorry I tried to insert the pics but xda wouldn't allow it. PM me if you want to see.

Yeah, I thought about soldering it - but have you seen how SMALL the parts are???
I even bought a new micro usb port for £2, but it's way too small.
There's no way I can solder parts that tiny.
I don't see what the bid deal is connecting the battery direct to the usb - as long as you don't leave it in too long?
it will level out at 5v and stop charging when it has equalised.
And I never left it in so long it got hot or anything - you have to monitor that.
You may be right, I don't know. I didn't try it long enough to test thoroughly as I got a new usb/charge port off ebay.
It wasn't $15 though - I paid $40 for a new one.

[Q] Who has had to fix your broken port?

I've broken my micro usb connector twice. Never had this issue with another phone. Anyone else have this problem? I guess I'm going to have to limit the number of connections after getting my phone fixed this time. I wish I could get a more robust port. Shouldn't this be a standard part across phones since pretty much every phone has the same port? Or am I wrong? Just curious if a company makes a more robust port that can be retrofitted to this phone?
Thanks everyone...
Uh, I've never had a problem and I take my card out quite frequently. How are you removing your SD card?

I connect my ac adapter several times per day. At least once in the morning, twice in the car, and once at work. Connecting and disconnecting the micro-usb cable seems to somehow break the connection so that the port stops charging. It doesn't seem to be a case of the port being loosened. The connection is still tight and fits properly. It must be something inside the port that is breaking. Eventually I have to jiggle the cable to get it to connect properly. Then eventually the connection is broken and cannot connect to charge the phone. At first I thought it might be because I was using Belkin cables or connecting the phone to the Samsung desktop dock station. However after the port broke once, I then only used Verizon cables and stopped using the dock station. It broke again. I've seen others reporting the same issue. I don't know how widespread the problem is with the phone. It's frustrating because I would probably keep the phone past two years were it not for this problem.
Mines broken too as of recently too. It will charge off and on all the time. Sometimes I wake up charged, sometimes dead. Rofl

D'oh! I could've sworn this said SD card and not USB port. My bad.
I've never had a problem with my port and I charge every night. I actually keep switching out batteries so I really don't have to stay on a charger. Dunno what to tell ya. Maybe you're too manly and rough?

The connection in mine is pretty hit or miss. I have to clean pocket lint out of it once in a while. That helps for a while. But even with that it doesn't seem to click into place like it used to. I put mine in the car dock every time I go somewhere and I'm always plugging it in to charge since I use my battery up too fast.
I have yet to break the port on my device, but I gave gone through several third party chargers which all broke.

Charge Not Charging!!
Wow I had no intentions what-so-ever to post about this micro usb connector issue that I have also been having until I came across the thread title. I would have just kept thinking it was my own fault for man-handling it or something. I have gone through several micro usb charging adapters for my non-charging droid charge. What a giant annoyance. I find if you press the cord into the port to charge and hold it at the right angle...for several hours straight...it will maybe work. Sometimes. In all seriousness though I found that the extremely short samsung adapter cord that the phone came with does the best job. Tried cleaning out the inside of the port too with small toothpick and it didnt even seem to have any gunk build up in there. I brought it to Best Buy and they said if I wanted to try soldering the tiny connector inside the port more securely to the motherboard in the phone...it might help...
I would happily keep my droid charge for a while longer if I could resolve this issue...even though the thought of upgrading to the Note 2 is pretty enticing...but id rather hold off on dropping 3 bills at the moment.
Does anyone know if Samsung will do anything about this issue if I were to call in about it or send it in to be checked out? Verizon stores apparently dont do any physical repairs.
seems to be a big problem with this phone. my cousin had 2 go bad and i had one so far.
I also had one go bad actually
As long as I keep the pocket lint out of it it's not too bad. But even at that I have to be real careful when it's plugged into my computer. It's liable to lose the connection at the slightest wiggle.

I stay in hotels alot...so I go ask to dig thru their box of lost chargers behind the desk and find a micro USB charger and I use my factory one for Odin flashing...as for the port inside my phone I never had a problem...just the factory cord has gone out on my fascinate and this charge...needs a face down charge with the factory cord or it won't work...lol

USB OTG killed my S3

I'm just posting for brief warning/general info for you guys. When I got to work tonight I plugged in my USB OTG cable which I have been using w/ no issues on both my N7 and S3 since July and then plugged in a 64gb flash drive that I have also been using since launch. When I plugged in the flash drive, I heard a pop, the screen went blank and the phone is totally dead. A quick search showed while this isn't incredibly common, it has happened to several people. Most blamed the OTG cable, but I disceted mine and it had no broken wires and no shorts. I turned up a thread on root wikiz that basically said that it is the power management IC self destructing and there is nothing that can be done to repair it. So, just a heads up if you use OTG-- I am not sure I will use it again on this phone as it seems it is just a matter of time...

This happened to me. Verizon will warranty the phone. I wondered what actually blew up in the hardware. I am surprised it hasn't happen to more people, seeing how you really don't have any control over whether it blows up or not.

Sorry to here about your phone. I was jut about to go buy one of these cables.
This same thing happened to my phone a few weeks ago. It went totally dead out of nowhere, I was taking photos at the time.
You shouldn't have a problem getting a replacement even if you don't have insurance.
Good Luck
I have heard stories about that happening, though its not common, it is surprising that its so low considering its random and no one knows exactly what causes it
at least you don't have to factory restore before returning
Sorry guys, I just woke up. Was on graveyard shift last night. Anyhow, the cable was a generic ebay right angle otg cable, about 5" or so in length. I am 99% certain it had nothing to do with the cable though, just a hardware problem. As mentioned above I dissected the cable and it had no problems. I could still use it on my Nexus 7 with no issues. I had the cable plugged in before inserting the flash drive and it was fine until the flash drive was plugged it.
The Root Wikiz thread I mentioned said that someone had sent theirs in to be Jtag'ed thinking it was just hard bricked. The response from the people where he sent it was that they had seen a number of them with the PMIC damaged and that there was nothing that their services could do for them.
My guess is there are some marginal PMIC's out there and that when they switch the port from charge to host mode they just cant take the current and pop. The fact that I made it nearly 5 months using the same OTG cable on a regular basis kind of lends credence to this theory, but who knows. All I know is that it was totally dead, absolutely no signs of life regardless of what I tried.
FWIW I was rooted and running paranoid android, but I have found reports of this happening to bone stock phones as well as any variation of ROM. Verizon did warranty the device. Oddly, the tech told me "I have never heard of this happening" but didn't even ask me to try anything with the phone, he just said that they would ship me a new one for warranty replacement.
New device is here, I'm off to root and unlock! Good luck guys.

Wow, that sucks, but I am glad you got another S3. I have been using this one that I got from Amazon. It has a couple of usb ports and 2 card readers. I have been very happy with it. It is extremely useful when I am at family functions, and everyone has taken a lot of pictures and video. I can grab their cards and pull the pics and video onto my 64 Gig SD card on my phone. People are amazed I can do this with my phone! However, now I am a little worried about using it. I will keep this in mind, and only use it on the occasions that I really need it. Thanks for the heads up!

One day charge is normal if using phone. If gonna use OTG you are overusing and can expect 1/2 day. Buy good cable if want data.
I had something similar happen except, my usb sent a static spark from my oc to my phone. Didn't fry it completely, but messed up something that would no longer dock to pc, dock to car our go into deep sleep.
Wonder if the two issues are related.
Be sure to discharge any static in you usb called before plugging them into your phone.

Discharging is what the battery always does when not plugged into A/C power and turned on, and even sometimes when it is plugged into A/C power (when you get in the top 10% of full it starts going through discharge/charge cycles to keep it within the top 10% of power but never totally full. This prevents overcharging and explosions)
That said:
A sudden reduction in the runtime for the battery under the same average load is almost always the battery going bad.
If you mean the battery doesn't last as long because you now use OTG - those things you plug into the phone need to get their power somewhere. The phone battery is it.
So now you are powering the phone + whatever other things you attach to it. Some of them can drain a lot more power then you might think. You just never noticed much (if at all before) because your total reserves weren't such a tiny amount.
If you stop using OTG devices and your battery capacity bounces right back up to where it was before, then you can reasonably infer the extra gadgets are the culprit.
(if you stop OTG stuff for a few days and the battery still sucks when before it didn't, probably need to buy a new battery because yours is most likely shot.)
Assuming it seems to work fine...
So two choices, right? No accessories and lots of battery life, or lots of accessories and no power to run them with.
well...not really:
It's probably not always possible - but how often do you use OTG near A/C power?
Whenever you are near somewhere you can plug in, the first thing you should plug into your OTG cable (besides the phone) is a USB hub with a power cord.
...and really, if you want to use those power hungry USB hard drives and things like that, then you really can't without taking the stress off of the phone of supplying that power - that hard drive just half spins up like a car that cranks but won't start.
Every crank in that car wears the battery down and beats up the starter when it doesn't fire up the engine. Just like every spin up but not quite read of the hard drive puts incredible load on the S3 to try to throw enough current at it fast enough to keep it happy. Just beating it up for nothing.
Which brought me to what I wanted to bring up for some consideration:
Think about trying to use a powered hub whenever you can as the first thing off the OTG cable, should take an immense amount of stress off of the S3 in making it all work.
Bet at the least you reduce the risk of popping since the power spikes will be much less - that powered hub is a pretty solid buffer for that kind of stuff when you are constantly popping flash drives in and out.
I remember way back when for the Nook Color when some really sharp people made OTG happen out of the thin air - no way Barnes & Noble had that on even a remote list of possibilities when they were ready to throw the device to the masses and see what happened.
If you wanted to use more then the smallest of thumb drives you needed a powered hub. The device wasn't designed for it, and simply wasn't able to squeeze more then a paltry amount of power out in reverse. (but it was just enough to talk to a powered hub...)
Anywhere that you can plug in your powered buffer should contribute to avoiding the problem the OP posted about. The thought experiment (hopefully) growing from this post? How much truth does this theory exhibit?
Edit: Totally missed this post:

Here you say you made an OTG cable, the first post I quoted you in you said you bought one. If you made it, i'd say that is your problem.
The quality of the cable you use absolutely matters. Higher quality parts = higher quality results.
I have a bunch of micro USB cables (as i'm sure many of you do also - ) ... and from some of them I get an absolute night/day result in charging.
Some cables (mostly the ones from the dollar store or older cables) just plain suck. They can't bring enough power from the same A/C adapter as my OEM HTC/Samsung cables. (I have some motorolla OEM cables from around the time of the droid X launch - they are closer to the dollar store cables in quality - haven't tried recent motorolla OEm cables, hopefully they got better or I got a bad batch over a six month period)
Using the low quality cables I can absolutely lose power plugged in just being a wifi hotspot with the screen on, until it eventually goes critical and dies. (this I tend to notice when my pc banished to the corner of nowhere loses all network connectivity) - whereas with the HTC/Samsung cables from within the last two years keep me near full with that being the only difference.
I'd rather have a few good cables then a bag full of POS dollar store ones. That little bit better material, little bit tighter QC adds up to a big difference in the final outcome.
This same thing happened to me when I plugged the same type of cheap right elbow OTG cable from ebay into my brand new S3 (2 days old with about one hour of usage). The cable worked fine with USB drives, a mouse, or a keyboard used alone on the S3. The cable was plugged into a USB 4 port hub with multi-card reader. The screen was off when I plugged it in so it appeared to just be off. Any attempts to power it on were fruitless. I smelt the phone right afterward and there wasn't any burnt smell. Plugging in the phone resulted in it getting pretty warm but not to an extreme yet the battery remained cool. It appears to have burnt something between the battery and lines but leaving the components intact thus causing the excess of heat. BTW the hub/reader is fine. I won't be using that again on my new one but I will be attempting to use a different hub that has been working fine on my wife's RAZR MAXX HD. Just hope this is a very isolated incident and not a bad batch from the retailer.
Edit: The S3 is a blue 16G Verizon model. The S3 was on stock ROM when this happened (not like that would prevent death from inferior circuit protection components).
Were you using a powered hub, or passive hub?

Don't do it. I've fried 2 GS3s with a UCA-220 DAC over otg.
First time with a regular OTG cable, the second time with a OTG/phone charging cable, the power came unplugged and zap. I'm lucky Verizon has replaced the phone two times.
I think the best solution is to completely isolate the DAC power from the phone power. A circuit to charge the phone with the otg/charge cable and a separate circuit to power the DAC.

Wouldn't use of a powered usb hub remove any power issues? I purchased a OTG cable today.. I had planned to connect it to a powered hub, and run the DAC off that?

USB Charging Port Issues

I noticed today that my charging port seems to be loose. I've never dropped the phone or had any other issues with it. But I noticed that my phone was on the charger and not charging. I then moved the connection slightly and it started charging again. If it gets moved at all it doesn't charge. So two questions:
1. Does anyone know if AT&T warranty will cover something like this? I called and got a really generic answer so I might just have to go into the store... blah
2. If it isn't covered in the warranty, does anyone have any idea where to buy a new port and/or how to fix it??

That sounds like user damage/wear and tear which is not covered AFAIK, unless you got the add-on insurance.
I've only had the phone for about 20.days and I'm always really careful with my phones. I'm going.to take it in the store to see if I can get a warranty replacement... I'm probably not even going to unroot or anything lol. wish me luck.
Have you tried a different cable....the ports can get damaged, but it's typically the cable end that wears and it seems like its the port

I can confirm this...just happened to me , new cable did it...
I tried another cable almost immediately and it was still not working. But I found an old kindle usb chord and tried it... the connection is nice and tight. I had to modify the case I put on my phone so the kindle chord would fit but now it works great and the chord is almost twice as long as the original HTC chord!
worked a treat
