First time unlocking bootloader - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I'm trying to unlock my nexus s 9020a and this is my first time doing this. I'm following this guide here
http://dottech.org/android/root-android/25412/how-to-root-nexus-s/
says it's up to date with jelly bean which is the OS i'm on. I downloaded the drivers and installed ADB and fastboot, but when I got into fastboot mode and connect my nexus s to the computer via USB, the first time i did it; it failed to install the drivers and now when i try to plug it in again, it won't do anything. windows wont even tell me that it's trying to install it again. Kinda stuck and would appreciate any help you guys might have

Try connecting your phone to your computer before booting into the fast boot menu.

Tried installing PDA Net? Mine works no matter when I plug it into my PC.

I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875580 and it mentions PDA net, but this is a really old thread for unlocking gingerbread, will it still apply for JB>?

First and foremost, this belongs in the q&a section. Is your phone an MB865, an ME865, is it AT&T branded? Have you tried uninstalling then reinstalling the Motorola drivers on your PC? Tried a different USB port and/or another PC? Can you give a little more information? Awesome sound effects, by the way.lol

Yeah, I was kidding. This site can be too serious at times. I know you said you tried everything, but a lot of people say that and it isn't always true, especially when they ask questions on the same day they became a member. I wasn't trying to offend you or insinuate anything. I asked if you had an AT&T branded phone because I was curious as to why you wanted to flash to 2.3.5 then ota to 2.3.6 then ota again to 4.0.4 instead of using this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961310
to go straight to 4.0.4?
So your PC isn't detecting your phone, but ONLY when in fastboot mode, correct? Is the phone detecting the PC? By that I mean, on my phone when I boot into fastboot mode, at first it says:
AP Fastboot Flash Mode (S)
0A.72
Battery OK
OK to Program
Connect USB
Data Cable
Then when I connect it to the PC it changes to:
AP Fastboot Flash Mode (S)
0A.72
Battery OK
OK to Program
Transfer Mode:
USB Connected
Are you at least getting that?

wot motorola driver ..?? i have installed moto device manager and it is not showing any thing connected.. because it remain in boot mode..:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
Use Virtual PC
I still have the same issue. I have installed Windows 7 on VM Ware workstation i.e virtual desktop and then followed the below steps :-
-Reboot your Virtual PC
-Install Motorola drivers.
-Reboot your computer
-Install RSD Lite
-Reboot your computer
-Boot your phone into Fastboot mode
-Connect your phone to your computer using a high-quality (preferably OEM) cable.
-Let your PC install any necessary drivers. When it finishes it should tell you that the device "Fastboot Edison S" is ready for use.
-Turn your phone off, disconnect the cable
-Reboot your computer
-Boot your phone back into Fastboot mode
-Wait a couple seconds then connect your phone to your computer
-Wait a couple more seconds, then look at the bottom text that's displayed on your phone. It should say
This means that your phone is connected to your computer.
-Open up RSD Lite
-Wait a couple seconds. At the top of the list should be your phone (under model it should say "Fastboot Edison S")
-If you've done all this and everything has worked out for you, flash the fxz! Make sure to follow the instructions in the noob thread as specifically as possible

This seems to be happening more lately. it IS a driver issue of some sort, that is for sure. I would just use one of the scripts, or moto-fastboot manually. they do the same thing as rsd but through command line either with your own typing, or a .bat script.
This may also work better in linux, so you can try downloading a live cd/usb of ubuntu and seeing if it is recognized. no need for drives with linux, just download one of the scripts that includes the moto-fastboot utility. Let me know if you need more help.

Currently I think it recognizes the phone as a media device (or similar, I forgot the name), not as a disk drive. I am on a Mac, and I have Android File Transfer installed, which then tells me that the device cannot be opened. On Windows it couldn't be opened either although it talked about a driver issue. I currently only have a Mac, but from Monday I could work on a Windows machine again.
The ROM currently being installed is the original AT&T provided ROM.
Thanks so much!

What version? IS it already installed on your phone? I'm trying to find out if you require MTP drivers or not. Latest version of sense/stock Roms require MTP driver to access the SD card.
In any case I wouldn't suggest using any version of TWRP above 2.3.3.1
So, I would download twrp 2.3.3.1 and check the md5
then fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilename.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
select recovery from bootloader then try to mount sdcard with twrp.

I see, this all sounds like I need to wait for a windows machine.
I am not sure what ROM version, unfortunately. I bought the phone in December from AT&T, and it all looks like it asks for MTP drivers. I will try this with a Windows machine and then get back to this post - thank you so very much for your help.

Alright, I have tried this with the latest HTC Sync manager: the MTP Drivers however won't install. I have tried with the One X+ of my Dad (which is also brand new, so probably requires the newest version also), and it installs fine and appears as a media device in the explorer. Mine however does not do anything, and driver installation says it fails to install the driver. I have tried manually installing the drivers, however, it seems to have to do with the phone because when I disconnect it suddenly Windows 7 is able to install those drivers, and as mentioned before it also works with a functional phone.
Next week I will be back at work and I have a Windows 8 machine there. I don't have high hopes that it works there, but since there seems to be an MTP driver issue with Win7, maybe there's a chance.
Is there anything else I could do?
Thanks!
PS: don't use your vacation time to root your phone...haha.

OK, so on Windows 8 I am able to install the driver, and it does not fail like in Win7, but I still can't access the mounted storage. The message of the device is:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
The process hosting the driver for this device has terminated.
Is there anything else I can do, or should I rather get a new phone?

Are you rebooting to bootloader to do the fastboot commands? In bootloader it should say Fastboot in red. Then after a couple seconds that should change to Fastboot USB. I don't think fastboot needs the specific drivers to be on the PC like mounting the SD card requires.

You are definitely doing something wrong. fastboot commands only work within bootloader/fastboot and adb commands only work while the rom is loaded up or in sideload mode in TWRP. It's assumed you know this prior to rooting.

It should change to FASTBOOT USB if you are plugged into a computer. If you connected to the computer after you got to bootloader mode, you might have to press volume up or down to get it to switch to FASTBOOT USB Maybe this is the root of your problem. Have you tried multiple USB cables? Is there any crud in the micro-USB port on your phone? It's a little odd that the micro-USB port would break in a manner that charging would still work but not data connections, but I'm starting to wonder if that isn't the case.

[Q] Urgent! Stuck at bootloader but cant do anything

Hi u all!
First of all thank you for your time and sorry for my english, I speak spanish.
I have a nexus s i9023. I was using CyanogenMod 11 experimental 24042014.
I was having many problems and decided to downgrade to the stable version 10.1.2
It downloaded ok, installed all the updates, rebooted and then got stuck in the logo screen when booting.
The problem is that my nexus s has a broken the power button, it doesn't work.
As for right now the olny thing I can do is to enter the bootloader screen, but cant move throgh the options with the volume keys, it's like its stuck.
If I plug in the device when in the bootloader (fastboot mode) screen my PC doesn't recognice it, I search in the device manager but it doesn't appear.
If it helps when I plug in the battery the phone starts on in it's on.
Please, any help is appreciated.
Im really sad because I love my nexus.
Thank you!!!
Same here. Any help for us would be great. Thanks.

Seems like a driver issue. Can you try installing the drivers in a different system?
If it goes well, then use install cwm touch recovery from fastboot. You can take backup and flash new ROMs after that.
Try Nexus Root Toolkit to install drivers if you don't have access to a different system.

Don't I need to have android debugging enabled? If so, I don't think Nexus Root Toolkit will work. I flashed a ROM to my NS4g & I get boot loops. I flashed the wrong Gapps a few months ago.
I was hoping there would be a way to automatically turn android debugging on. I know it may sound dumb & also probably impossible.
Any other tips.
Tell me I'm screwed. Haha.

I disabled USB debugging. Rebooted to bootloader. Fired up 'fastboot devices' on cmd and could see my phone. This tells me that I do not need USB debugging on fastboot.
If you see an unknown device in Device Manager while in fastboot then use Universal Naked Driver to install the drivers. But since you don't, you'll need another PC to do this stuff. Once drivers are installed, you can do a 'fastboot reboot recovery' to get into recovery and fix the the problems. The first thing I advice is to flash a touch recovery. The rest is up to you.
Flash back the original soju firmware back onto your device by first using "nexus s root toolkit v.1.8.2 by wugfresh". It may take a little of your time downloading the roms and installing the drivers but trust me it should be working and your phone will boot into stock android 4.1.2. You can then root your device and install custom recovery as normal. Anything do pm me  ps, click the bricked option one the software is loaded up and remember to connect your device only and remove other phones from your computer

Atrix 2 not recognized by computer after brick, RSD/fastboot still works fine.

Here's the rundown on what happened:
1. Flashed SlimKat after using Cyanogen11 for a while.
2. The phone softbricked when I installed slim gapps.
3. I was dumb and was doing this on relatively low battery, so I couldn't use fastboot to reflash.
4. I built a motorola factory cable and reflashed InlineFlashing_Edison_67.21.125_CFC_P3_APBP.xml (ATT 4.0.4) via RSD and fastboot.
5. RSD works just fine, but instead of getting to the "Finished" step, it always says "manually power on phone" when the phone is already on the welcome screen. I suspect this is because the computer won't recognize the phone and therefore RSD doesn't know that it has a phone connected to it.
6. The phone charges from the computer, but does not recognize data connection. Says "USB not recognized" on my computer when I reboot phone.
Here's what I've tried:
1. Uninstalled/Reinstalled all motorola drivers on my computer
2. Reflashed using RSD
3. Turned on USB debugging
4. Tried all 3 USB modes under Storage->USB Connection Type
5. Tried 3 different usb cables as well as different usb ports on my computer, to no avail.
I'm stuck. Help please.

Yeah, it works fine. It has stock 4.0.4 and is not rooted.
I'd like to be able to root and go back to CM11, but don't know how to do that if I can't connect to PC.
Google which "one-click root" app works for it. I think framaroot works but don't quote me on that. There is always a work around for that
