CM10 soft brick? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hey guys, so I attempted to install cm10 last night on my skyrocket but as you can probabably guess it didn't go as planned. As soon as cwm6 went to install the zip it came up as "bad" within cwm and would not intall the rom. I had checked the md5 after it was on my sdcard and before installing. I was rooted, but running stock ics through kies with att. Installing cwm and rooting went flawlessly. Ive been reading up for days into different roms and installation methods so I didnt have any hesitatiions when it came time to pull the trigger. I backed up all my apps with Tibu and had a nand of my stock rom made with my current version of cwm. When i went to install my backup all ii get in cwm is "no files" and they are on my ext_sd. So right now all i can do is boot into cwm, but if i try to reboot the system it just hangs on the samsung logo. I know this has been reported a million times, but what i haven't found is someone that has a nand made but a "no files" notification from cwm when trying to access it. i would really appreciate any help you guys can offer thanks a lot

What could have happened is that either: your backup was moved from clockworkmod/backup directory or your sd card is unable to be mounted! Are you able to boot into download mode? If you can flashing a stock rom seems to be the only solution...unless you want to try re-flashing the rom? If you can't boot into download then A USB Jig seems like the only option left...

Yeah, i can boot into download mode. First, thanks for the quick reply. Sorry, but my brain is absolute mush after trying to figure out ways to get this under control. I almost called out of work today to spend more time with this, unfortunately i have a working dog so i cant call out unless she is sick for some reason so that is not really an option. So if i understand this correctly I would have to use odin to flash a stock rom and if that is the case wouldn't it have to be in tar format? Thanks

Its alright+yeah, using odin and yeah either .tar OR .tar.md5!

for our phones root is not required to flash custom roms, so read just a tad bit more, im just saying

Hey Vin, I hear ya. I just wanted to have it rooted first and then check out different roms to decide what if any i wanted to flash. In any event, I was able to use your post to flash the 4.0.3 tar and now I'm up and running. Thanks so much. I understand that the custom roms are already rooted, what I don't was confusing was why it made a difference flashing when already rooted as opposed to being stock and then flashing. With our phone is it generally safer to flash from an unrooted phone? My last phone was an inspire so I guess reading up on how to root an htc and then moving to Samsung i expected more roadblocks. Anyway Vin thanks as you can see the "sent from" line all is good.

doesnt matter, when flashing a rom, stock or custom, the previous "su" root file gets wiped

You do have a point. I owned three HTC phones before going over to the skyrocket, and expected hell on earth to get rooted and ROMed. ANYBODY HAVE A REZOUND? Jeeez. But, vin is also right. I researched for an hour before doing anything with my skyrocket, and the FIRST thing I did was set up a recovery and backup the stock ROM. Not trying to harp on you, just want to have a post for others that RESEARCH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP IN CUSTOMIZING YOUR PHONE! All phones are different, some of the same models can't share ROMs. So be careful....

Is there a ODIN file for the Rogers captivate froyo 2.2? Is it possible to flash roms without the ODIN file?
Do I just flash the JF6 Stock [email protected] Kernel anyways? I'm kind of stuck right now, this is my first attempt to flash and I've already hit a roadblock can anyone help please.
Read this thread.

I downloaded that file, but couldn't figure out what to do afterwards. I watched the mobile tech videos and it seemed that he was able to just click on the file and open the odin, while when I try to open it says "can't find application to open" after I extract it. Also I don't understand why I have to flash back to stock when I'm already at stock.

First download odin from this thread,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
Open it first and then point it to your rom image that you would like to use, you don't extract the file you have, it's ready to use as downloaded.
Please watch the videos again because you don't understand it yet and you're well on your way to a solid brick.
BTW using CWM with a .zip is easier then Odin IMHO, and can be done completely from your phone, no computer needed, it will also let you know if you have the three button recovery ( very important if something goes wrong ).
Read, read and read some more. Flashing a rom is not hard but it does have to be done correctly. If you want an almost guaranteed result you'll do the homework and learn something. I've only been here a while and rarely do I see a question that hasn't been answered 50 times already, your answers are here, go look for them and you'll pick up other things you will need to know when you decide to be a bit more adventurous with setting your phone up JUST like you want it.
Thanks for the information, it looks like I got lots of work to do.. The link you sent me has a broken Odin link on the other side, do you have a mirror or some sort so I can get the file? Also my final question is that since I have a Rogers Captivate I need to JL1 file not a J16 right? I've looked everywhere but couldn't find an answer to this... Thank you.

do you want to install a custom rom?? like phoenix or cog? if you are already rooted, just install clockwork mod and flash it to phone... then reboot into recovery and choose install zip from sd card... then select 'choose zip from sdcard'. then find the zip of the rom you want to install. I'm a rogers user and I've flashed all the latest roms (currently using andromeda 2.0). Never needed odin.
oh I see thanks, I've tried flashing Cognition via ROM manager with no success. I had Cognition on my SD card, installed and flashed the Clockwork mod and then selected "install ROM from SD card". From their it makes me select my ROM and then after I do it takes me to recovery mode. From here I select Reinstall packages and it says something like "Can't verify file" in red writing and aborts installation. I've always thought that maybe since I skip the whole "flashing ODIN" step that's why it's not working but obviously that's not the case. Do you know why it's not working for me? Thanks for the help.
are you running rogers 2.2 update? it has 3e recovery and will not allow zips to be flashed.
if that's the case, you will need odin3 from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821625
then put a new kernel in the PDA section. I used the tar file listed in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870760
then with your phone powered off, sim card and memory cards out (put back cover on so the battery doesn't fall out) hold 2 volume buttons and plug in usb... should go to download mode. then hit start.
boot up will take a bit while voodoo formats ext4 on your files. after that, you can go into recovery mode and flash zips from sd card

when you flashed cog it would have put a new kernel on there. when you flash a different rom they come packaged with one the dev chooses. You can switch the kernel after with sgs kernel flasher or cwm

Hello all,
So I'm getting my Charge in a few days, moving from a rooted evo, so I'm new to the Samsung scene. I've searched these forums but still have a few questions about the current state of things concerning rooting the Charge:
1. Does CWM work fully yet?
2. Is ED01 currently the only version that can be rooted?
3. What is ODIN/HEIMDALL and what is it used for?
4. Is simply rooting the phone enough to flash roms, kernels, etc? I know with HTC phones you have to unlock some other stuff first.

1. It works except for nandroid restore, this is being looked at.
2. ED1 and ED2 have both been rooted.
3. odin is a samsung utility for flashing, heimdall is an open source alternative that works for mac/linux users also
4. no unlock necessary, samsung hasn't locked bootloader
so odin has to be used for everything when flashing something like kernels roms etc?

From my understanding no, but like you I come from HTC phones...so this is semi foreign. At the same time this allows me to see if what I was reading i understood correctly and begin to grasp these concepts...
The custom CWM that is flashed with jt's kernel, you can flash within there.
how I read it is, ODIN is what RUU is to HTC...

The nice thing is that it is easy to create your own Odin packages, so things can be created in either CWM or Odin flashable packages. CWM is a work in progress, but is working well enough right now for most purposes (flashing stuff).

CWM to root? Or root to CWM?

OK before anyone blasts me yes I have researched for two days now and feel like I have been run in circles. I have searched XDA and Google to no avail and no I'm not a noob. I myself have a galaxy s2 skyrocket but recently got my wife the infuse and I'm starting to think that was a mistake. OK this is what I've found...
I type in Google how to install CWM recovery on the infuse and every thing I find says it must be rooted first.
Running Android 2.3.6 update thru Samsung kies....
So I type in how to root the infuse and what I find is if you want to root without flashing a new kernal you must have CWM to install a zip file from the SD.
Seems like one big circle. To root my skyrocket was easy as flashing a recovery image in Odin of CWM recovery and opening a super user zip file to root. 5 minutes easy as 1.2.3.
So my questions are..
1. Can I flash a recovery image tar of CWM to the infuse using Odin?
2. If so where can I download the tar file. I already have Odin 1.85 installed on my PC so I don't need that unless the tar comes in a one click.
3. If I can't how can I root and install CWM without flashing a custom kernel?
Please don't give links to nothing heimdel. The last time I used heimdel was with my captivate and I spent 3 days unbricking it.
4. Will the Motorola exploit added in super one click work with Samsung or harm the phone in anyway?
Thanks ahead of time for the help...

Check with jscott. He may know for certain.
Flashing kernel does not alter data.
I made several root via heimdall versions.
Instead of heimdall, basically, if you can Odin an insecure kernel, boot into cwm recovery, you can flash my cwm root package.
It also remove all bloats. Check my uclb3 root thread especially post #2
And as far as I know, on the infuse uclb3, you can't root without an insecure kernel flash in download mode.
Well it may cost a phone of I may soft brick it a few times but I'm gonna put my programming skills to the test and see if I cant come up with a one click root to 1. Make life easier for everyone and 2. To make it simple for the noobs to figure out. I'll let you know if my java VB and other languages I know can come up with something. It may take me a while and a lot of lost sleep hair pulling cursing and crying but I'm gonna give it my best effort.. wish me luck cause I'm gonna need it...

For now, the normal exploits used for a one click root option don't work on the stock UCLB3 Gingerbread kernel. As qkster has mentioned, you need an insecure kernel to root UCLB3. Also, there isn't an easy way yet to change the stock recovery to CWM without using a custom kernel zImage that includes it. Check out this HOW-TO that I wrote up for an explanation of what it takes to root UCLB3 Gingerbread. This explains how to temporarily use a custom kernel to achieve root, and also explains how to go back to the stock kernel. None of this removes existing data on the phone.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603220
If you don't want to do all of the work required to root UCLB3 on your phone, then you can use qkster's Heimdall one-click packages or my Odin packages that he showed you earlier.
you can root the infuse with super one click... easiest way to just root it, and also might i add, the infuse is very difficult to hard brick, soft bricks are easy to fix, with odin or hiemdall but i haven't yet heard or seen a case where the infuse is actually hard bricked, now installing cwm is easy as well, just youtube it, very simple and that there should get you on your way to flashing

Assuming that you are talking about going back to stock Froyo to root with SuperOneClick? As of yet, you can't reliably use SuperOneClick on the latest Gingerbread release. Sounds like the OP wants to directly root UCLB3 Gingerbread.

Now, you're talking.
Good luck.
You will need to look at some kernel work.
You may also need to look at the pit files in the unbrick package.
If you can, also look at boot sequences of the galaxy device. Adam Outler did some neat stuff with the galaxy devices.

since this is your first post, welcome! xda is a great place, and the skyrocket sub forum is full of a fun loving knowledgeable bunch.
In the future, try to search around first to see if you can find a solution. If not, post your question and what you HAVE found out, as senior members will be more inclined to help u.
Only difference between our phones and the at&t version, is as u said, the "r". Once u have cwm installed, u are more than welcome to flash any rom in the development section. As previously stated however, the one click Odin leaks for design gears have some kind of firmware check, and won't work on our devices.
Also, when someone helps u, press their thanks button! :-D
Thanxs guys.
I'll spend some more time reading posts BUT It's quite confusing. For example...I find a post on flashing a rom and two pages in it's talking about ODIN when I've now learned that system isn't compatible for my phone. There must be dozens of posts, all different, about rooting my phone. I don't even know if I need to root before installing a custom rom!! But then it makes for some interesting reading.

It doesn't need rooted to flash roms. It just requires CWM, the custom recovery. Then you can flash a custom rom, since they are already rooted for you

Odin works fine for Rogers phones. Things such as flashing back stock tars and recoveries work fine. What doesn't work is the ONECLICK odin's from the ICS leak designed for the regular i727. This is because it checks the model # and because we have an (r) at the end it wont work. There are plenty of great roms to flash. Just use odin to flash CWM and then install any rom you want.

It will not wipe internal sd(emmc). It will only do that if you format emmc.
Just don't wipe the internal SD card and you should be fine

OK I found Odin3 and have it on my PC. Just looking for CWM.. BTW I found a thread on Canadian specific phones ad read their "how to" on flashing roms and they basically omitted the CWM part and instead loaded the ROM file into odin and flashed it that way!!?? What gives?

Sounds like you have the cord plugged in. Don't.
Hold volume up, down and power. Release power when Samsung logo appears but stay holding volume buttons until cwm pops up

[Q] Where to start...

Ok so I have a rooted infuse 4G and am a complete noob when it comes to flashin roms and mods... I am still on the froyo 2.2.1and hate it lol. Which brings me to my first query, I know its possible to upgrade my android version to the GB and JB with multiple methods but I'm extremely scared that I'm going to brick my phone. It was some forums on here that helped me decide to root my phone so now I'm hoping that you guys can help me take the next step. So whats the safest, easiest way to upgrade my os.. Odin didnt work and I no longer have a computer, so heimdall is out as well. Oh not sure if this is important but I'm not registered on any network nor have I unlocked my phone's sim. Well that's a start. I really hate froyo 2.2.1 so please if anyone can help I definitely could use it.

From Froyo 2.2.1, there is an official build GB 2.3.6 UCLB3 out for the Infuse.
You will need a computer though. Without a computer to restore your phone to stock from soft bricking, you should not be flashing anything. It may be possible for you to bring your phone to an AT&T store and have them update you if you don't have a PC. You will need a computer to root the GB UCLB3.
Where to start? Read the Q/A as much as you can. Then move into the Development section.

Thanks qkster.. I really appreciate your help. I follow alot of your threads and am so hapoy thst there are infuse users that actually are willing to take the device to the next lvl. Now for another question.
Will it be easier to flash the jellybean 4.1.1 from the froyo or the gb? Or would it be possible to just flash a higher kernel? I'm not syre if that would help me or not, I really want to speed up my infuse and stop it from rebooting so much.

You cannot flash JB from Froyo and need to go to Gingerbread, then ICS then JB.

Would it be best to use kies to update to GB? I'm a little concerned as to what would happen to my Infuse all around.. What will need backed up?
I have titanium backup but if the app gets wiped wont i lose all my back-ups? For some reason it wont sync to my dropbox app force closes every time I try. Sorry about all the questions I'm just short on the amount of time I am able to browse threads at the moment but I do have use of a computer for awhile so that kinda helps.
I personally prefer using odin or heimdall. Don't quite trust kies and it often gives issues.
all mayor changes will occur on system partitions. Your internal sd will remain untouched, and there you will titanium backups. Just reinstall TB app later and restore apps, not data.

Well I'm going to install and give it a try with Heimdall. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks everyone for all your help. I'm sure I'll have more questions before long. XD

Will this even work if i'm not registered to a network with the phone still locked? And I see that it will also unroot my phone which isnt a problem I'm just curious whether or not I can still root with super one click or if i need a different root tool?

It doesn't matter if your phone is unregistered and locked. You cannot use SuperOneClick on Gingerbread. What you should do is (this is the Heimdall version):
Flash this rooted version of stock GB:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25526643&postcount=2
You do that and you already have root.
If you want to then graduate on to Jelly Bean you must:
Flash ICS (follow directions carefully!):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24901014&postcount=1
Once you've done that, flash any of the JB ROMs you like, but make sure to read the directions carefully. I strongly recommend that you consult the Super Everything Thread for links to the ROMs and tweaks you need, particularly if you are interested in unlocking your phone.

I'm feeling kinda stupid..
Can somebody give me the right link for downloading Heimdall One-click w/root? For some reason I'm not able to get any to work on this computer.. I downloaded the ink provided labeled UCLB3 -DEBLOATED-ODEX - ROOTED - BUSYBOX- STOCK KERNEL on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25526643&postcount=2
but am unsure if that actually is the one containing Heimdall or just the rom i'm flashing or both.. I'm extremely sorry about my noobishness of just posting all these already answered questions. I've gone and confused myself and have like ten tabs with different threads open please don't hate me. I have a bad habit of asking questions..
Oh and what apps do i need on my phone in order to flash? And I mean absolutely need. I've also noticed that most threads say to format my mounted sd card But i really dont want to do that if i dont need to.
It should all be bundled together. Heimdall is a java based interface so it should just open up. Sorry, it's been a long time and I'm an Odin person!
You don't need any apps on your phone. When you flash, everything on the small partition will be wiped (apps, app data, etc). Flashing will not usually wipe your pictures, videos etc. but it's always a good idea to back up. For now, don't worry about formatting anything. When you get to ICS, you'll need to format as it says in the instructions. Otherwise, if it works, don't fix it!
When you flash ICS and JB, all you need to do is to put the zip files on to your internal SD card (not the one you can take out). You can then flash from CWM (which will already be on your phone - don't download Rom Manager).
Once again thank you all. I'm running GB and loving it. My fiance is shocked at how much help I needed though usually I'm the person everyone comes to with their tech issues LOL. But I absolutely did not want to mess my infuse up. I thought I did but the issue was such a noob mistake that I had to smack myself in the face at my stupidity. Forgot to unzip the cwm ect folder I downloaded. XD not sure I'm ready to try ICS or JB yet though.

The odd thing is you could have updated to GB through AT&T and used mini kies. But at least you are now rooted and able to go to ICS and JB.
Read the instructions on the next step before moving on.

Kinda wish I would have done it that way... I wanted to get some practice flashing roms tho. And now my phone is bootlooping, computer says the device is incompatible I can only get into the samsung recovery even tho the rom i flashed had cwm packaged in. I tried to change my boot animation following the steps provided in my boot animation thread then again with the steps in tsqers rom thread I apologise if thats mispelled. I tried updating from sd but get a sign error Can get into download mode but same issue with it being incompatible usb device. I tried holding down the power button for 1 minute and then rebooting no luck there. I tried wiping data/fact. reset,... nothing. I tried wipe cache partition,...still looping.
The loop samsung screen two seconds, black screen 1 1/2 seconds,... over and over and over...
My battery is full. Any advice???

Which ROM did you flash and which CWM recovery can you see (which version)?
I used the http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...43&postcount=2 thread to get the rooted rom UCLB3 -DEBLOATED-ODEX - ROOTED - BUSYBOX- STOCK KERNEL.
Saved I think.
So I finally Got it to connect to my comp and re-flashed the rom can i get a link to an ICS heimdall one click package to flash before restoring anything and this happening again?
You should be able to find it on the ISET page.
