Restored IMEI but stuck on Roaming - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Long story short, I lost my IMEI while updating my Synergy ROM with one of the nightlies but was able to restore it using the IMEI injection method here. I was able to restore service but was stuck on Roaming. I used Odin to return to stock, unrooted, locked and even tried the *2767*3855# to reprovision the phone and still had the Roaming issue.
Has anyone come across a fix for the Verizon roaming issue after losing IMEI? Thanks.

Yep the fix is to back it up before you lose it...this is posted all over the forum.

Keep your eyes peeled - this is mentioned A LOT over and over again in the dev forum. The roaming fix isn't available for Verizon, but it's available for other carriers. My guess is that it's a matter of time.

I lost my IMEI before I even knew there was a new backup, I had assumed that the previous .efs backup worked fine (I know my fault, I should have done more research and I'm kicking myself for it now) but to be fair I have seen stories of people who did use the new backup and still had the roaming issues. Btw, I talked with VZW and they GUARANTEED me that I would not see any additional charges if my phone was in roaming mode. My exact words were, "If I go home and download a 5gb file will I see ANY charges onto my account" and his response was "as long as you have unlimited or stay in your limited cap I guarantee you that there will be no additional charges for the roaming issue". Idk what its worth but as far as I'm concerned the roaming (as annoying as it is, I'm checking the forums every day for a fix) is just a cosmetic issue.

Well unless your "fix" comes with a time machine then I'm pretty much screwed. As another user pointed out, backing up the EFS was at one point supposed to be the thing to do but obviously that doesn't work now does it? Thanks for your "help".

It sounds like we are in the same boat. VZW told me the same thing and I'm obviously on VZW towers since I'm getting 4G. It's definitely a cosmetic issue but still a pain in the arse.
Surely someone will figure this out soon but patience isn't one of my virtues.

My apologies in regards to my previous post! Yes currently there is no roaming fix, but im sure it wont be long. To answer your last post, yes folks have been successful at restoring thier backed up efs...not everbody has tho. But that obviously does you no good now. I have been lucky and have had no data issues other than when i had that stupid phone info app installed. Avoid that thing like its the plague!!

What issues were you having with Phone Info? I used it for awhile without any issues and didn't have it installed when I lost my IMEI.

So how can I tell if I've tripped the flash counter or reset the flash counter?

The only way you will trip the flashcounter is by flashing custom software in odin...ie custom recovery or kernel. Long as you root, unlock, flash cwm with the methods in my guide, the flash counter wont be tripped.

The issue i had with phone info app is sometimes i would open it and my data would be killed. The app kept switching me to wcdma preferred. Had to uninstall app and reprovision my device.

Is the issue you guys are having with roaming a constant thing or is it just once an awhile a popup will say you are roaming and asking if you want to allow data use? I have the later of the 2 once in awhile.
Thanks

It's persistent. Also reprovisioning did not work for me.

did you ever get the phone out of roaming? i have the same issue. lost imei, restored it and i have my info back in there but its stuck in roaming....hopefully there is a fix

If I were you guys I would just warranty replacement instead of all this playing around.

I posted a possible fix for this in General ...
Go into Settings>Wireless>More Settings>Roaming>Roaming Guard and uncheck voice and data under domestic.
Report back ...

The other possibility is to use a database editor, go into System Settings>Settings.DB>Secure and tinker with the Roaming line items.

Turning off roaming guard doesn't stick for me, pops up a warning message of some sort then when I go back in the boxes are checked again.

CRUSHED:2 month old Rocket Is now a Turtle HELP!

Used Superoneclick rooted two of these Skyrockets Running ST two months ago.Ive kept the 2.3.5 that came with it,and just put on golauncher or spb shell 3d.Never been happier. Both phones speedtest between 3-8m,just perfect for a non LTE smaller city..Just couldnt be happier.
But the incidents in the last three days have turned my jubilation to a bleak grey, crushed existence.Im seeing red and i ran here.I pray to the xda gods for wisdom and patience.
Few days ago being the noob i am (few easy roots in 3 years) i decided to meddle with my precious skyrocket, and its spb shell..Was getting errors of various sorts trying to re-install apps i shouldve payed for.(from now on i vow to pay for each and every paid apk i install-im so done) Including spb-though i payed for it on my g account,it was on my girls phone with my gmail as well, which i paid for it but only to be on her phone not mine...
Long story short i went arount deleting caches im sure i shouldnt and possibly cwm stuff too..i have no idea what i deleted exactly,or remember, because im a noob and an idiot.
Everything works fine on the phone but the one thing that matters the most to me..the data..the internet is so slow...Speedtest used to be around 4m or 6m,now im lucky if its .1m Takes 5-15 minutes for a small market app to download..
I can send and receive pic messages, make phone calls etc etc...
But my speed is gone... I called straight talk and of course they told me they dont throttle, instead they would cut my phone right off if i had downloaded too much..
I even tried changing apns,i used my girls sim,and that didnt even do it..
So finally i unrooted after one factory restore... still crawling..
so i just did another factory restore, still crawling..
One thing i can say is that at&t was trying to OTA a huge update in the previous days...but it wasnt installing...Maybe it installed something?
HELP ME puh puh pleeez
One simple question. Can you get into download mode? If you so you can flash the phone back to stock. You can download the firmware 2.3.6 from www.sammobile.com Just do a search on sgh-i727 and it bring up the list. you just need to make an account to get the download. I would start over and start fresh.
Also you may want to think about what you have running, what all apps you have running in the background that could be stealing up some of the data.

Per the whole being a noobie and idiot thing, what technically is "download mode"?
I can download SCREAMING fast w/wifi...
Please read some of this.

And more importantly, download mode.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21011261&postcount=5
thank you i will do this now brb
If you need more help, shoot me a pm and I will walk you through it.
ok well you asked if i could get into download mode... Which i just tried (for testing purposes-and without getting Odin etc etc)
it is saying DOWNLOADING-DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET....What do i do now?
the odin link is dead and am downloading the other stuff on my pc
You can just do a battery pull to get out of download mode and restart the phone.
Download odin from here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17548951&postcount=1
it still says downloading after pulling battery...should i unplug usb?
yes, because you do not have all the files yet. But this is good to know and it should not be any problems getting you back to square one.
If you're on stock 2.3.5 just download the kj2 modem and reflash in cwm no need for Odin.

so let me ask you all this question...
If in fact my cell company is throttling me, thats usually a month-long thing? or is it permanente????

That is what i am understanding too!
But there is no other explanation for my issues...
Like i said,me and my gf both have new skyrockets, both for two months.
both have ST sims, same apns settings..
Her sim and phone are fine..her sim in mine is slow
MY sim in HER phone is slow...
Did two factory restores and upgraded from 2.3.5 to ICS..Still nothing..
It can only be throttling or hardware...
Wifi is fine...
So... what is it? Hardware or Throttling..i dont know
I can tell you the posts over @ Howards forum (straight talk forum) are growing rapidly for throttling issues...
Beleieve me,i REALLY want to beleive ST doesnt throttle,i think they may have finally started tho....
This may be a stretch,
But is there a place on xda where i could download the correct apn settings for a straight talk sim in this skyrocket?
yes yes i know there are many places where i can go find the settings to manually put them in,but for various reasons, i would like the actual file to load in apn backup and restore app....
Anyone know where i could snag that?

User error-fixed

OK, with all my messaging and calendar issues, I decided to re-flash the stock tar (as I had used the old method of rooting). I set the phone up again, and now I am still stuck at the start up screen with the rings. It will not go any further. It works fine as long as I do not shut the phone down. From what I can tell, in order to fix it, I need to factory reset, which I am hoping to not do this time again (for the third time in a day). Where should or can I go from here?
redownload the tar file again, check the md5 sum to make sure its good.
Also make sure the tar file is for your carrier, ie; verizon. that may be your problem.
Ended up they are sending me a new device. Could be the device? Could be an app or setting I am restoring with TB though. Not sure. It is getting kind of frustraing since I am not hacking this as I have other phones in the past and am having more trouble with this than any other phone.

This is why we can't have nice things. If people didn't waste so much of Verizon's time and money with their hacking maybe Verizon wouldn't feel the need to fight so hard to keep us from being able to hack our phones.
Did you flash stock with recovery or did you Odin back? Cuz if you odin'ed back, you may have missed the step to uncheck auto reboot, then load stock recovery mode and wipe phone. If you Odin to stock and don't after that, but before booting, you will most likely boot loop or freeze.
For future reference....

Andthis is why XDA sucks sometimes. Guys like you who troll and decide to post in a thread in a negative way instead of helping out earlier. And in all actuality, what is happening to my phone I do not think has anything to do with rooting. I had rooted on 7/9 for the sole purpose of wifi tether, nothing else had been done to the phone. It worked flawlessly until this week when the borwser, calendar and facebook decided to start force closing for no apparent reason. I figured a reboot would help and that started these issues. Sooo..therefore I decided to revert back from scratch and the problem is still there. I think we all would know that Verizon care wouldn't be able to hel outside exchanging the phone.

Maybe so, but this didn't appear to be a root issue. Since this phone is so locked down I hadn't messed with anything and was getting multiple random force closes and then got stuck at the boot screen. No biggie, think I got it sorted out, went throgh and manually reset all settings and apps. Seems to have worked.

Another IMEI Q..

So, sorry to ask another one of these questions, but I don't wanna mess up my phone. So, my understanding is that if you flash ANYTHING, CM10, CM9, or a TW ROM, you have a chance of losing your IMEI? Because as of right now I have rooted my phone and unlocked my bootloader but I don't wanna go any farther if there's a chance I can mess up, because with my luck, I will...
Oh, and is there a chance I can get messed up just being rooted and unlocked if Verizon decides to push an OTA or anything really.
Yes, there is a chance to lose your imei anytime you flash. However, if you search, there is a way to back it up and restore it 100%. Use search.
Since you have already unlocked your bootloader, never accept an OTA. There is a possibility it could brick your phone.
Sent from an overpriced Verizon tower.
My understanding is that there is a small chance you can lose your IMEI no matter what ROM you're flashing. I personally flash 2-3 ROMs almost everyday and haven't had any issues though. You can also restore your IMEI using QPST. There's a thread that shows how.
If you're running stock rooted with the insecure aboot, I strongly suggest disabling the OTA update app so verizon can't sneak an update to your phone. I think its FWUpgrade.apk. Accepting an OTA could brick your phone if its unlocked.

What do you mean by inject?
I haven't had an issue yet (knock on wood), so I haven't had to go through it yet. I've also decided to take a break from flashing until someone gets a better handle on the problem, but I have read of at least one occurrence of the imei disappearing while receiving a text well after flashing a ROM.

Not apparently, but there's always the chance Verizon can get unhappy about it, as they provide roaming for free.
I've heard a reprovision can fix the roaming issue, but you'll need to be on TW and the reprovision will do a full wipe as a side effect.
I don't know if roaming is even fixable theoretically, but if it is, you can probably just be on roaming until the devs figure something out.

Okay, thank you. It doesn't really make sense that it would switch to roaming, but what do I know

What does IMEI refer to???? May lose if I flash a custom ROM?

I hear people referring to IMEI and that may lose it of they flash a custom ROM? What does this to refer to and what are the implications?
Thank you -
IMEI
If you flash a non TW ROM you could lose your IMEI, which allows you to log on to the Verizon network. If it gets borked you'll have to restore a back-up or try to restore from the IMEI number in the battery compartment. There are a couple of great threads on hot to do it. Just Search. I just backed-up mine and it was really easy. Don't forget to thank the DEV. They are amazing. If i could have children I would want one of there's.

Consider the IMEI as a serial number of sorts that's unique to your device (though not necessarily true) so that it can identify itself to the network through the sim card. Also consider that it can be corrupted and removed for many unknown reasons at this time.
Moral of the story: Back it up before making any changes to the phone.

Actually if you're on stock rom/kernel then you don't have to worry about randomly losing your IMEI. It only seems to occur when flashing or running a custom kernel. This means a custom touchwiz kernel can cause it.
Some people are saying its not a preventable issue. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that's unacceptable. I'm hopeful one of the many smart devs working on this phone can figure it out. This phone has overcome too much to be gimped by an issue like this. The IMEI issue essentially makes running custom kernels impractical for people who cannot afford to lose their phone's basic functions; it can happen at any given time.
I'll continue to hope that since this issue exists across all carrier editions it will be solved.

First of all thanks for sharing...
So I have already installed a custom rom ( currently synergy r39) and a custom kernel imoseyon 0.2.2...
So I better go make a back up ASAP ...
I lost mine once while running an unofficial cm nightly. I flashed it and everything worked fine. Then I restarted the phone and I lost my imei. It was a pretty quick fix because I backed up efs.bin file. I then used the qualcomm tool to restore the imei and then I pushed the efs.bin backup over the current one. I then reflashed that cm nightly again and I was working again. It took about 25 min. The only downside is if this happens and you don't have a computer you can't use your phone till you get to one.
Best thing is to not panic and check the threads here. It's an easy fix. I wouldn't be worried.

Had a couple questions for you as I'm running the CM10 alpha and about to move to the nightlies. Is there any advantage to backing up the efs.bin file as opposed to creating the QCN file that is described in the IMEI backup threads? Can you use QPST to backup the efs.bin? It sounds like its better to have both than just the QCN file. Sorry I don't know what exactly the efs.bin file is so apologies if I'm not making sense.
Thanks!

Yeah, I have been getting that impression from reading around since my post.
I'm not going beyond root for this phone until something more definitive to prevent the IMEI issue can be found.
I must have flashed ROMs on my Incredible hundreds of times, quite casually, and it seems best to avoid the problems we're seeing with people who have attempted to restore their identifier and still have roaming indicator showing, etc.

I had the same issue. I called support and they sent me a new sim card. Once I threw it in there and it activated the error went away. I would call or go into a store and get a new sim.
Hate to tell you but you probably need a new phone. I was getting that message with my first GS3. I took it to the store I bought it at and they tried a new sim...same message. They didn't want to, but I demanded they give me a new phone. I paid full retail price for the phone, so I didn't want it replaced with some refurb piece of junk.
I commented before reading further posts. Hope your replacement is good.

I have this problem too. I wonder how many people have this problem and don't know it? Not everyone is as update happy as the people on this forum are..... Myself included

The new replacement solved the issues..but decided to get new sim as well just to make sure..I am not 100% sure but Im beginning to think that some of the peoples issues may lie within flashing certain roms and zip alterations and causing hardware issues... I could be wrong but the thought has crossed my mind

I have never rooted or flashed any rom on this phone, 100% stock. This started a few days after the last update.
